Signals and Systems.......2007-09-25
Not one of Schaums good books. Skips too many steps in solving problems. Other EE students and also complained about this one. Usually Schaums a safe bet, just not this time.
Best Book EVER!!!!! (No Kidding).......2007-08-27
I don't even know how to start to express how much i love this book...i almost have tears in my eyes as im writing this LOL This book saved the rest of my studies in Electrical engineering. The book by OPPENHEIM is a WASTE of money AND time!!! It's a huge book that confuses students for nothing! But this one instead is more detailed and waaaaay smaller than OPPENHEIM's book. So that you actually learn waaaaay faster! It doesn't contain no stupid stories that we don't give a **** about LOL It goes straight to the point.
For me it's been the best book EVEEEEEEER!!!!! PERIOD!!!
A Great Study Tool.......2007-05-07
I purchased this book for a first course in Communications; Math of Linear Systems in the Electrical Engineering Department. This was the first outline book that I ever purchased. It was a great study tool. It is clearly organized and easily navigated. The language is plain and simple. The examples are effective in detailing the covered concepts, and will greatly improve your understanding of the material.
This book was used to clarify the concepts taught in the course - and accomplished that task well. It would be a poor idea to expect this book to teach Signals and Systems to someone unfamiliar with the concepts.
Organized, Clear and Complete with Appropriate Rigor.......2007-02-27
Positive:
The topics are well organized and covered with an attention to detail. In fact, some of the details regarding convergence of transforms are nicely and concisely presented in this text, while other more expensive texts gloss over certain subtle aspects (bilateral Laplace transforms). As a result of the quality of this book, I've used the text as the sole text for an undergraduate introduction to Signals & Systems. Like all Schaum's outlines, the book provides great detail in the steps necessary to arrive at final solutions. It's a bargain when used as a reference manual or tutorial.
Negative:
Unlike a typical course text, there is very little explanatory prose in each chapter. Without an understanding of the motivation or reason for using certain "tools" in an electrical engineer's toolset, a student can easily feel as though most of the presentations are mathematical exercises without connection to real signals or systems. I've found that in my use of this text, it is imperative that those connections are carefully made, and constantly re-enforced, while working the exercises. A user of this text benefits from seeing demonstrations, working on real-world problems and making the mental connections between the mathematical operations contain within.
A Work of Pure Imagination.......2006-11-03
If you are trying to understand the premise and scope of signals and systems theory, look no farther. Hsu hit a home run in the materials--especially selection of problems--and their arrangement. To get the most out of this text, you will need to understand your calculus and your calculus-based physics backwards and forwards. Otherwise, some of this material may strike you as somewhat pointless.
Book Description
This book is a self-contained introduction to Laplace Transforms and Fourier Series; emphasising the applications of Laplace transforms throughout, the book also provides coverage of the underlying pure mathematical structures. Alongside the Laplace transform, the notion of Fourier series is developed from first principles. Exercises are provided to consolidate understanding of the concepts and techniques, and only a knowledge of elementary calculus and trigonometry is assumed. For second and third year students looking for a rigorous and practical introduction to the subject, this book will be an invaluable source.
Customer Reviews:
excellent text.......2005-09-20
This is an ideal introduction for mathematicians and applied scientists. Written in an easy to understand style and full of good relevant examples. I guess only the more mathematical will be able to digest the last chapter.
All exercises have not only answers but solutions which students will appreciate.
Clearly written introduction.......2000-01-02
This textbook tries to strike a balance between the "toolkit" (how to use it) approach (supposedly) desired by engineers and the more rigorous mathematician's development. Speaking as an engineer, I found it not as intuitive as I had hoped (I'm more mathematically-oriented than most engineers) However, the book is clearly written and develops the arguments in small steps. Recommend it as helpful, but perhaps supplemented by more careful development.
Book Description
This textbook describes in detail the various Fourier and Laplace transforms that are used to analyze problems in mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering. These transforms decompose complicated signals into elementary signals, and are widely used across the spectrum of science and engineering. Applications include electrical and mechanical networks, heat conduction and filters. In contrast with other books, continuous and discrete transforms are given equal coverage.

Not so good........2006-10-12
I got this book a couple years ago even though there were no reviews on it because it was the only book that covered both Fourier and Laplace transforms. The book is dissapointing. It is more like a collection of notes than a text book that flows, explains, or guides. There is almost no formatting; for example, the first time the analysis equation is shown, (the equation that pretty much IS Fourier analysis) they don't even so much as put it in bold. It's just like equation 2.332 tucked in the bottom of the page. Not even a comment on it's importance, meaning or anything. I suppose all the material is in there, but I recommend not getting this book.
Book Description
This book proveds a clear, concise explanation of Laplace transforms, or operational calculus--now necessary knowledge for engineers, physicists, mathematicians and other scientists. Definitions, principles and theorems are illustrated and reinforced by hundreds of fully worked out problems. Also included are chapters on complex variable theory and Fourier series and integrals, so important to discussions of the complex inversion formula.

Laplace Transforms.......2007-05-12
I have several books on Laplace Transforms; but the Schaum's Outline by Murray Spiegel is particularly well done. The book is logically organized with many worked out examples. This is a classic overview of the Laplace Transform.
Not for us.......2007-05-01
Not for people who need a book on Laplace Transforms. Yes, lots of practice problems with answers. If you get lost and don't know how to go about a problem well page reference would have been nice.
Learning.......2007-01-06
Good overall coverage. nice explanations, and worked examples. id recommend it to anyone wanting to brush up on their transforms before an exam.
Laplace Transforms Explained in Plain English.......2005-09-23
This is a valuable reference to keep handy as a reminder about which transform methods best apply to various problems that you need to solve around the office.
It helped me through control systems.......2003-12-29
This book taught me both the basics and some of the finer points of LaPlace Transforms to get me past that hurdle so that I could begin focussing on the actual material presented in my BioControl Systems course. Many people got so caught up on the mathematics of LaPlace Transforms that they did not even get to the point where they could begin understanding control systems. I bought this book from Amazon at the beginning of the semester and it turned out to be a life-saver for me. I think that had I not sat down with this book for a weekend and taught myself LaPlace Transforms, I would have not passed that class.
Granted, this is a single case for a single class of a single bioengineering student; nevertheless, for my part I strongly recommend this book. I was put in a class where the teacher expected the students to have an understanding of the mathematics from the start. The majority of us didn't have that background, and this book clearly, simply, and without too much complication prepared me for my class which was exactly what I wanted it to do. It has been one of the best investments (as far as school books go) of my college career.
I must leave you with one parting word of wisdom. This book, and I don't think any other book dealing with such an advanced topic, is not easy to read. You will not be able to thoughtlessly master the material. You will work to understand it; your brain may hurt at times. But this book presented the information in a much-more-easy-to-digest manner than any of my college math textbooks, and for that, I am grateful.

new chap 19 on numerical inverse laplace transforms.......2006-11-03
Chapter 19 is an excellent modern review of the main numerical inverse Laplace transform methods in use today. It does a good job of tying together many of the methods into a unifying theoretical light. Pretty much the only modern review out there, it was written by Dr John Knight, who is a co-author of one of the more important numerical inverse methods (Fourier series method of de Hoog, Knight & Stokes).
The rest of the book is great too.
Great Introduction.......2000-08-04
This well written book teaches by example and will quickly make you proficient in the subject. Davies uses complex analysis to approach the subject which provides a way to visualize the problems.
Book Description
This book deals with the concept of moments, and how they find application in subsurface hydrologic problems-particularly those dealing with solute transport. This book will be very valuable to researchers who are beginning to learn about moment analysis, and will also be of interest to advanced researchers as well. Both temporal and spatial moments are dealt with in some detail for a wide variety of problems. Several examples using experimental data, both from laboratory columns and field experiments, are provided to give the readers a clear idea about the scope of this method. Apart from conventional uses of moments for solute transport problems, this book contains chapters dealing with use of moments in interval computing, vapour phase transport applications, transfer functions to subsurface tile drains, and construction of breakthrough curves from knowledge of moments.
