Good text book, bit too pricey.......2007-05-07
I liked this book alot when I was in climatology. It isn't longwinded and is explained in plain english. It's Good as a source book, but goes into great detail (even too much) in some sections and not enough in other parts.
Overall, it's a bit too expensive if you aren't using this for a course. Buy it used if you can.

Book Description
METEOROLOGY TODAY has for many years been one of the most widely used and authoritative texts for the introductory meteorology course. Each edition is extensively reviewed by leading researchers in the field to ensure that the text remains completely up-to-date and reflects today's current understanding of meteorological concepts. Author Donald Ahrens has been widely praised for his ability to explain relatively complicated ideas so that even under-prepared students can understand them. The text's clear and inviting presentation is supplemented by numerous pedagogical features that help augment students' understanding. Introductory stories found at the beginning of each chapter draws students naturally into the discussion. In-chapter reviews then help students to consolidate their understanding as they read, while four types of end-of-chapter exercises provide opportunities for everything from further review to in-class discussion questions. Graphics are carefully designed and subsequently refined so that the key ideas clearly emerge. Many of the photos in the book are taken by the author and provide unmatched images of dramatic weather phenomena. A unique and popular feature over this title's seven editions has been the foldout cloud chart at the back of the book. A wealth of online resources accompanies METEOROLOGY TODAY, Seventh Edition, allowing professors to integrate striking and illuminative interactive weather exercises into their course. Many of the exercises on the BLUE SKIES CD-ROM packaged FREE with each new copy of the text are tied to downloadable real-time weather data, offering instructors an easy way to bring the exploration of current weather events into the course discussion.

Great Intro text book.......2006-06-01
One of the best introduction to metrology I have read. Great for any anyone that is interested in the weather. Gives more information then average books that are found at local book stores. Also the on line tests help you know what you have learned.
Great Book.......2005-02-24
This is a great book. It was expensive (aren't all college textbooks?), but worth it.
As a beginning weather hobbyist with a new weather station, I have been looking at many weather books over the past couple months. I have been disappointed. Most seem geared to elementary school levels. A couple handfuls are for the general population, a few intermediate, and a couple handfuls are for more advanced hobbyists or professionals.
This book was one of the very few that I would strongly recommend. The information is great and presented very well. It is colorful and slick (yes, substance is more important than slickness, but this book has both).
I found the CD less than useful, so I tried it and removed it. You won't be missing anything, really. The book has it all. Just a great book.
Disappointing extras.......2005-01-18
For a meteorology reference tool, save money and buy the book used without the CD or infotrac. The blueskies CD is only good for one year from activiation according to the license agreement and infotrac is a 4 month subscription to online databases that are largely available for free at the public library.
Awesome.......2004-06-08
I am enrolled in a Meteorology course right now. I bought this book sometime ago to get ready for the coursework in Meteorology. I had read a bunch of books prior to this one and I found this book to be well written. Easy to understand and great illustrations make it easy for anyone to understand it. May be a bit too basic for some. If you need to know more about Meteorology and want to know more than the average Joe...then buy this book....you won't regret it. I love it!
Fairly good introduction to the subject of meteorology.......2001-01-02
This text is a very basic introduction to the world of meteorology. The writing style is very simplistic, as the book seems to be intended for non-science majors. There are very few quantitative portions and the few math portions that are there could use a little more expansion. All in all, this book is suitable for anyone who wants an introduction to the weather without having to do numerous calculations.

Customer Reviews:
Too many typos.......2006-02-01
It may be the so-called Bible of atmospheric science, but there are too many typos for my taste. Perhaps if you're just trying to remember what the proper equation is, it'd work better.
Tables of values are frequently missing minus signs here and there, which can make working out the problems and/or examples difficult. There are other random typos that make examples simply not work out. If you just want the equations, this is ok, but for learning, it's actually easier when the typos are in the equations (and not the numbers), since in that case there's a "thought trail" of sorts.
The book claims to be the only reference, in which case you haven't got much choice, but that doesn't make it good.
The Bible.......2004-03-25
As if this needs a review... its a bible for atomspheric scientists of all genre. A must have. Especially good for any grad student preparing for the random question during an oral exam. Not that you could read the thing cover to cover, but there is something for everyone.
If you need a great reference, then this is it. If you are not sure you should buy one of the best references for atomsopheric chemistry and physics, then there is no reason to. That's just a sign that you probably don't need it.
Everything you need to know about Atmospheric Science.......1999-11-22
This book has it all. If you are in the field of atmospheric sciences, it is a muct have. If you're not in the field, but are interested in learning about atmospheric science, I'd highly recommend it. It's a technical book, with plenty of math, but it is written in an engaging, easy to read format. It's packed with information on eveything from tropospheric ozone formation to industruial plume dispersion modeling. It has everything you need to know about atmospheric science.
Book Description
"A superb reference." --- Physics Today "Will become a classic text in climate research. " --- Physics World "Valuable to anyone who studies, models, or uses the climate of the earth." --- Walter Robinson, Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society "Informative and authoritative on a remarkably wide range of topics." --- Nature
Are we entering a period of global warming? Is weather predictable? Physics of Climate offers you an in-depth description of atmospheric circulation and how environmental phenomena worldwide interact in a single, unified system. This integrated approach unites all the key features of the climate system--oceans, atmosphere, and cryosphere--to explain the structure and behavior of climate over time. Ideal for students and professionals in meteorology, oceanography, geophysics, and physics.
Book Description
Climate Physics is a modern subject based on a space-era understanding of the physical properties of the atmosphere and ocean, their planetary-scale history and evolution, new global measurement systems and sophisticated computer models, which collectively make quantitative studies and predictions possible. At the same time, interest in understanding the climate has received an enormous boost from the concern generated by the realization that rapid climate change, much of it forced by the relentless increase in population and industrialization, is potentially a serious threat to the quality of life on Earth. Our ability to resist and overcome any such threat depends directly on our ability to understand what physical effects are involved and to predict how trends may develop. In an introductory course like that presented here, we want to clarify the basics, topic by topic, and see how far we can get by applying relatively simple Physics to the climate problem. This provides a foundation for more advanced work, which we can identify and appreciate at this level although of course a full treatment requires more advanced books, of which there are many.

Good Intro to Climate Physcis.......2007-09-24
As a physicist with no experience in climatology, I'm finding this book a good source of information to help sort out the many conflicting views on climate change. Readers will find some background in mathematics helpful, but not essential, in understanding the material.
Extraordinary, Superb!.......2007-04-27
This is pure Climate Theory straight to the veins. I chose this book looking for something that clearly explain the theory behind atmosphere, ocean and the problem of global warming without going into the details and this is what I found in this book, plus a wonderful explanation for the non-specialist. There are formulae in this book, but in my case, I focused more in the concepts.
The book is masterfully arranged, with lots of tables, figures and references, covering topics such as Ozone layer, clouds and aerosols, energy transfer, astronomicals changes that affect climate, measuring systems, other planets climates and more. Excellent book Mr. Taylor.

Book Description
This clear and accessible text describes the methods underlying short-term climate prediction at time scales of 2 weeks to a year. Although a difficult range to forecast accurately, there have been several important advances in the last ten years, most notably in understanding ocean-atmosphere interaction (El Nino for example), the release of global coverage data sets, and in prediction methods themselves. With an emphasis on the empirical approach, the text covers in detail empirical wave propagation, teleconnections, empirical orthogonal functions, and constructed analogue. It also provides a detailed description of nearly all methods used operationally in long-lead seasonal forecasts, with new examples and illustrations. The challenges of making a real time forecast are discussed, including protocol, format, and perceptions about users. Based where possible on global data sets, illustrations are not limited to the Northern Hemisphere, but include several examples from the Southern Hemisphere. Includes foreword by Professor Edward Lorenz (Massachusetts Institute of Technology).

Book Description
The dynamics of the atmosphere, ocean, and climate are inherently nonlinear and complex, making computer models ideal for accurate, complete understanding of these systems. In the process of building and using models, the reader of this book will learn how the different components of climate systems function, interact with each other, and vary over time. Topics covered include the stability of climate, earth's energy balance, parcel dynamics in the atmosphere, the mechanisms of heat transport in the climate system, and mechanisms of climate variability. Special attention is given to the effects of climate change. The book is accompanied by a cross-platform CD containing models and a run-time version of STELLA (R) software. Walter A. Robinson is Associate Professor of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Chamaign.
Book Description
Ready for a dramatic lifestyle change? This book outlines the dire climatological and economic effects that are sure to ensue if mankind continues to pollute and to deplete the earth's bounteous resources at an accelerating pace. The author presents evidence showing that we are not only using up fuel sources and clean air and water, but provoking a sea change in the planet's ecology. He draws a dire conclusion about the consequences for everything from food supply to global political stability. He argues that the failure of the US and other nations' political systems to deal with these issues has driven the planet's ecology to the brink of collapse. In clear, non-technical language, the book provides an integrated assessment of current problems involving climate, ecology, energy, politics and economics. Systems theory is used to explain these linkages and the causes and consequences of human actions upon them. In addition, the author gives a detailed, clear analysis of how humans process information in order to learn to deal with the world-and in particular how to deal with crisis situations. The book supplies the cold hard facts (including charts and statistics) to back up the author's argument, describes how the impending crises have arisen from mankind's values and actions, and serves as a call to action for radical change to set civilization on a more promising path to long-term survival. The author places particular emphasis upon the role of multinational corporations in causing hydrocarbon resource depletion and global warming, and in blocking effective political responses to these challenges. The legal doctrine of corporate personhood, which allows these artificial "persons" to capture control over human political systems, is analyzed. He further observes that corporatism could not have gained so much political control without the support of the public, especially the religious right, and Dispensationalists in particular who believe that we have entered into the final period of history during which the Bible's prophecies will be carried out-literally. The sooner we see the destruction of our earthly paradise, the sooner they hope to get to heaven. Such beliefs are neatly exploited by those who have a more venal interest in promoting slash-and-burn technologies. An insightful call to arms about our precarious 21st century. That this is the crucial century few can now doubt, and Byron sees this well. - Gregory Benford, author of DEEP TIME Mike Byron holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California, Irvine. He teaches all aspects of Political Science and Political Economy in local colleges in the San Diego area. He has published a number of peer-reviewed professional papers, and has presented many papers at international conferences. Dr. Byron has also written numerous newspaper opinion pieces and he is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Sociocybernetics. He was the Democratic Party's candidate for United States Congress in California's 49th Congressional District in 2004.
Customer Reviews:
This is not a neutral book........2007-07-21
This book came to me with my ongoing research and study of Environmental Engineering. I believe this book has profound interpretation on the status of our planet and the people in charge of "ruling" over it. All of his facts are backed with relevant research that becomes his source of opinions that are easily understood. This is not a book that will explain every detail on the science of Climate Change; and I do not recommend this book to people unsure whether Global Warming is happening. Instead this book is more in tune to deal with the change of society towards the issue and its politics. I do agree that this might be a book with extreme leftist and it sometimes seems overbearing, with that it is still a very well written and incisive read. It definitely makes you want to question the governments in charge instead of questioning whether global warming is actually happening.
leftist paranoia.......2007-05-07
This will not be the last text on global warming. Byron takes it as a given that global warming is happening. But he also looks at other, related trends, in an attempt to tie these together into a projection of the what the future may hold for us.
One such idea is that of peak oil. This suggests that global oil production will peak soon, in about 10 years. After which, there may be a plateau of uncertain duration, followed by an inexorable decline. The problem is that if this eventuates, oil prices will climb steeply. One prediction is ever deepening recessions, on a global scale. Another is a prediction that the US might use its status as the sole superpower to capture the oil reserves of the Middle East. This is the most striking commentary in the book. To believe this, you have to believe that Bush and Cheney are incorrigble warmongers. Leftist paranoia.
At this point, some readers will digustedly toss away the book, thinking that the author is ostentatiously bloviating. Let's hope the latter is true.
A Critical Call To Action We Must Respond To.......2006-11-21
There is a lovely picture of a rainbow on the cover of Michael P. Byron's book, "Infinity's Rainbow," but pictures can be deceptive, because this powerful call to action tells us that there will be no pot of gold at the end of that rainbow unless we change our values, behaviors and actions, and make them more aligned with the global good.
As the human population explodes, the earth suffers more and more under the weight of global resource depletion, economic hardship, climate change caused by human greed, and political corruption and denial. This book is filled with detailed research and studies of the drastic changes this planet is undergoing, many at the hands of people who simply consume without thinking, and corporations and politicians who benefit when we do so. Byron, who holds a Ph.D. in Political Science and is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Sociocybernetics, has published many important papers on the subject matter covered in this book. He even ran for Congress. But this may be his most critical work yet, as he documents the damages done to planet and people by pollution, overconsumption of fossil fuels, religious fundamentalism and extremism, corporate personhood, fascist governments and failed politics that refuse to face the coming global changes that could lead to mass starvation, water shortages and war and terrorism fought to simply survive the catastrophic results of ignorance.
This is not an easy book to read, or digest. There is a lot of very technical reportage as well as historical fact, which makes it a comprehensive analysis of how the unholy union between corporations and politics, with religion thrown in to boot, is making it harder and harder for the average citizen to cope with hardship. And it looks like there is plenty more hardship to come, for Byron pulls no punches in detailing the frightening results of both an ecological and economical meltdown headed our way. Byron also shows how the public is a part of the problem, allowing either voluntarily or involuntarily for the policies of destruction to be accepted, even welcomed as they were after 9/11 struck fear into the hearts of everyone, bringing we the people into a collective submission before a governing body eager to spread control through fraudulent elections and a corrupted media, and morph into the pseudo-fascist dictatorship we now call American Democracy.
If you care about the future, yours or that of your children, you must read this book. It is not all hopeless, for Byron gives us actions and ideas we can take to reclaim our planet before it is too late. The coming changes are big, maybe even massive, but taking those steps today can perhaps make then survivable, and even turn things around so that maybe there will indeed be a pot of gold at the end of "Infinity's Rainbow." Byron tells us at the end of his book, "This is our one and only chance. Let's not blow it!" Will we heed that call to action?

A wake-up call for the human race.......2006-10-08
You will be amazed at this intensively-researched and extensively-documented book. In his easily readable but stunningly comprehensive work, Mike Byron carefully explains the links between the seemingly disparate problems of corporate personhood, failed politics, peak oil, endless war, religious fundamentalism, creeping global fascism, global warming, and increasingly vicious hurricanes and tornadoes. You will literally feel the scales falling from your eyes.
Infinity's Rainbow is a wake-up call for the human race.
We stand at the brink of a precipice. A follow-up book will be coming to tell us what to do about all of this (it was too much to include in this book, said the publisher), how to save ourselves from the now-inevitable cataclysm, and how to piece civilization back together afterward. The first step is to understand how we got to this point.
This is the most important book that I have ever read. It scares the hell out of me, but it's better to know than not know. Ignorance is not "blissful" -- it is stupid, irresponsible, and possibly suicidal. "Blissful ignorance" is no longer an affordable option. Understanding is what we need now, and Infinity's Rainbow gives it to us.
Buy this book. Infinity's Rainbow and its sequels will be the cheapest and best investments that you have ever made in your own future, and the future of your children and family.
