3 out of 5 stars Not As Advanced as you would Think.......2006-10-03

I purchased this book along with "Circuit Design with VHDL" by Pedroni. The Pedroni book was supposed to help me with syntax issues and general knowledge of vhdl while I wanted this book to learn some more advanced techniques. I found the two books very similar in level of difficulty. Chapter 8 on the Design of Fast Arithmetic Units and the section in Chapter 5 about designing an LCD controler are about the only advanced topics in this book that teach you how to design in VHDL. The section on implementing a RISC Thumb processor is more of an arichitecture lesson than how to implement it in VHDL on a FPGA. This book is more of an intermediate book than an advanced one. This is a good book don't get me wrong its just not as advanced as I would have liked.

4 out of 5 stars using a finite state machine.......2005-06-20

Perhaps the key idea here might be the use or implementation of state machines in the design of the circuits. For the level of complexity and the number of transistors in a typical chip, you need some systematic means of disciplining the design.

While some readers might readily find other aspects of the book to be more pertinent, to me the paradigm of a finite state machine seems the most fruitful.

Book Description

Advanced ASIC Chip Synthesis: Using Synopsys® Design Compiler® Physical Compiler® and PrimeTime®, Second Edition describes the advanced concepts and techniques used towards ASIC chip synthesis, physical synthesis, formal verification and static timing analysis, using the Synopsys suite of tools. In addition, the entire ASIC design flow methodology targeted for VDSM (Very-Deep-Sub-Micron) technologies is covered in detail.
The emphasis of this book is on real-time application of Synopsys tools, used to combat various problems seen at VDSM geometries. Readers will be exposed to an effective design methodology for handling complex, sub-micron ASIC designs. Significance is placed on HDL coding styles, synthesis and optimization, dynamic simulation, formal verification, DFT scan insertion, links to layout, physical synthesis, and static timing analysis. At each step, problems related to each phase of the design flow are identified, with solutions and work-around described in detail. In addition, crucial issues related to layout, which includes clock tree synthesis and back-end integration (links to layout) are also discussed at length. Furthermore, the book contains in-depth discussions on the basis of Synopsys technology libraries and HDL coding styles, targeted towards optimal synthesis solution.
Target audiences for this book are practicing ASIC design engineers and masters level students undertaking advanced VLSI courses on ASIC chip design and DFT techniques.

4 out of 5 stars hands on guide.......2005-11-12

This book is geared towards the synopsys synthesis tools (as evident in the title). It gives brief explanations about vhdl and verilog coding style (which can be found in many other books).
The actual useful part was that the book explored the commonly used synthesis commands in synopsys, and also had explanations on the steps to follow to succesfully synthesize rtl. These ideas can also be used on synthesis tools from other vendors.

This book is good for people already familiar with front end rtl design and are looking into moving to backend.

Book Description

This first edtion book covers the key design problems of modeling, architectural tradeoffs, functional verification, timing analysis, test generation, fault simulation, design for testablility, logic synthesis, and post-synthesis verification. The author's focus is on developing, verifying, and synthesizing designs of digital circuits rather than on the Verilog language. Some of the topics covered in this book include Digital Design Methodology, Combinational Logic, Sequential Logic Design, Logic Design with Verilog, and Programmable Logic and Storage Devices. For professional engineers interested in learning Verilog by example, in the context of its use in the design flow of modern integrated circuits.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The best book for Verilog synthesis.......2005-03-03

This is the best book that I have found for Verilog synthesis. There are many good books on Verilog, but most of them focus on simulation. This book is specifically useful for synthesis.

The book seems intended to be used for a course on digital logic design. The first few chapters deal with digital logic design generally, and can be ignored. The discussion of Verilog begins after 100 pages in chapter 4.

The core of the book is chapters 4 through 7, which describe how to define digital logic with Verilog. This is approximately 300 pages of description, discussion, and examples. The examples are well written, and very useful. The examples show, in a simple and straightforward manner, how to write Verilog that synthesizes well.

Chapter 8 covers programmable logic devices, such as CPLDs and FPGAs. Unfortunately, the focus of the chapter is on specific device families, and is only of historical interest. For example, none of the Xilinx FPGAs discussed would be recommended in a new design. If the chapter had covered the basic concepts of device categories of interest, it might remain useful.

The last few chapters cover some advanced topics, such as digital signal processing. A few of the topics covered are interesting. Most are too incomplete to be useful, and I believe that some of them (such as FIR filters) will not synthesize in a realistic case.

The appendicies are extensive, and provide a reference for Verilog.

The strength of the book is that it is the only one I have found that covers Verilog synthesis clearly. That portion of the book is a pleasure to use. The weakness of the book is that large sections are essentially irrelevant. It is a 1000 page book that would make a good 400 page book.

The book would be significantly improved by an update, especially to Verilog 2001. In the current edition, Verilog 2001 is mentioned only in an appendix.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Verilog Book I've Seen.......2004-11-09

If you find a better Verilog book, let me know.

I've tried about ten other Verilog books, and numerous online tutorials, and this book is the best by far. There is a wealth of information, and the inside covers have an excellent four page summary of the language (again, the best I've seen). The chapter on the Data Path Controllers has a RISC CPU example which alone is worth the price of the book, as well as many other useful cookbook examples. It comes with a Verilog simulator, and has over 100 pages on synthesis.

The book seems geared toward FPGA designs. I'm not sure if that was an oversight, or at ~1000 pages if the author just ran out of space. For me, this is a minor grievance. Also included is an intro to logic design. If you need this, you are probably better off reading a book like _Logic and Computer Design Fundamentals_ (Mano).

5 out of 5 stars Essential reading.......2004-10-15

Good books covering Verilog syntax abound. This book shifts the focus to design with Verilog, and gives a masterful presentation of the ins and outs of synthesis, from theoretical foundations to practical examples. The brief, but clear, front-end review of combinational and sequential logic set the stage for the treatment of the language, and helped bridge the gap between paper-and-pencil design methodology and the powerful approach offered by Verilog and synthesis tools. It has more examples than any other book, ranging in difficulty and scope from basic to comprehensive (e.g., it includes fully developed (and very clear) JTAG and BIST examples). I find the layout exceptionally attractive, with an abundance of figures and fully discussed examples. Plus, it comes with a simulator and an FPGA synthesis tool. If I had to have only one book on Verilog, this would be it, hands down.

2 out of 5 stars Not cohesive.......2004-05-27

This book is a collection of scattered examples and subsequent examples don't build off of the previous ones as much as they could.

The first few chapters are worthless. The first "review" chapter goes through combinational logic too quickly and could have been ommitted completely. The introductory chapter on sequential logic is also of no use; the only concepts I was able to follow were the ones I already knew.

The book is really repetetive. It was almost like entire paragraphs were copied verbatim. A single proofreading could have weeded this stuff out. Other forms of repetition seemed to be caused by the fact that similarities between related concepts weren't identified and factored out.

There's also a huge section about Xilinx's and Altera's FPGA products that reads like a mix between a datasheet and a press release.

To top things off, the typesetting is horrible. Each example has an unnecessarily large begin/end banner that makes it hard to see the actual structure. The text in the code samples sometimes overlaps onto itself. I wouldn't have cared so much about problems like these if the book's content were any good.

In the end, I got the impression that the book was hastily put together. Definitely a waste of money.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for intermedate/advanced digital designers.......2003-09-18

If you want to go from designing basic building blocks to the next level: this is one of the few books out there that can do that for you. The author builds up speed quickly, but he provides complete examples(not code fragments) with simulation waveforms. Most of the code is available on his web site.

The 1st chapter is a good review of digital design(usually one half of a basic design book). His examples are excellent case studies, including architectures for arithmetic processors. There is a chapter on memories,on the structure of the different FPGAs and chapters on all stages(eg test and synthesis) of FPGA/ASIC.The author is an excellent teacher as this book shows.

(If you are struggling beginner-type student try the modeling, synthesis and rapid prototyping book first.)

Advanced digital design is an excellent book.
I recommend it for both experienced engineers and students!

Book Description

This volume introduces phase-locked loop applications and circuit design. Drawing theory and practice together, the book emphasizes electronics design tools and circuits, using specific design examples, addresses the practical details that lead to a working design. Wolaver assumes no specialized knowledge in the area covered, reviewing basics as necessary; makes heavy use of figures to support the understanding of phase-locked loop theory and circuit operation; extensively discusses frequency acquisition means, an intensely nonlinear phenomenon; treats injection locking, a practical and often confounding problem; and takes a unique approach to characterizing the phase-locked loop parameters.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Useful in the real world.......2006-07-29

This book is useful in the real world simply because it develops certain topics that other authors gloss over, particularly with respect to phase noise and how the loop filter affects it. While there are few actual circuits and practical application hints, its treatment of the PLL as ideal, mostly linear system is still very useful in a qualitative sense.

1 out of 5 stars Rating this book.......2003-12-11

I'm an EE student and was assigned to design and build a PLL. I purchased this book and found out, it' really sucked. I doesn't show any basic discrete detailed built circuits of VCO's or Phase detectors. I would not recommend it to anyone who has to actually build a pll.

5 out of 5 stars The best analog PLL reference, most referenced here........2000-12-27

You've got to have this PLL book for it's braod range of basics no matter what other more specialized PLL books you acquire. Highly recommend.

My business now, and one of the businesses of my employer, is focused on building phase-locked loops. Analog PLLS. Digital PLLs. Clock recovery PLLs. PLLS with equalizers in front. Software PLLS. This is our most-used and favorite PLL reference book. Whatever the arcane issue regarding PLL function: noise, false lock, phase linearity range, the author of this book comes through with coverage of it.

Irregardless of what a prior reviewer states, this book does contain the prototypical frequency-domain negative-feedback-loop control theory analysis, but quickly moves away from damping factor and natural frequency to parameters that are more useful in PLL design. The author's examples are at the system level, the board level, and while there is no charge pump, there is the switched-output equivalent.

It is the only PLL book, out of the 6 that I own, that covers the frequency detector and the many different phase detectors types, each typically applied to different classes of problems solved with different classes of PLLs. There are books with more complete coverage on the implementation of digital signal processing DSP-based PLLs, but for a best general reference on PLL theory and operation, irrespective of implementation type/style, this is your book.

For digital PLLs see: 1) 'Phase Locked Loops: Theory, Design, and Applications' by Best for basic digital PLLs (but beware of a few huge errors such as the equation for the basic 2nd-order ideal integrator transfer function), and 2) 'Phase-Locked Loops for Wireless Communications - Digital and Analog Implementations', which reads like a thesis proving that student author can do the math, but with some more advanced topics, and with the mathematics that follows and supports the leading edge commercial implementations.

4 out of 5 stars good book with a completely different approach towards pll.......1999-12-04

This book will give you a good understanding of PLL theory and design with a entire different approach. Author did not use the traditional control theory approach and took a dirrerent root. A good number of practical examples and some new development of phase detectors are covered here. However, the author did not mentioned about charge pump PLL. Author approach may not prepair the readers for reading the current literature since they are based on control theory.

Book Description

The Verilog TM hardware description language is widely used in both industry and academia for the description of digital systems. The language supports the early conceptual stages of design with its behavioral level of abstraction and the later implementation stages with its structural level of abstraction. The language provides hierarchical constructs, allowing the designer to control the complexity of description. The Verilog TM Hardware Description Language, Second Edition takes a tutorial approach to presenting the language. It starts with a tutorial introduction which presents the major features of the language by example. It then continues with a more complete discussion of the language constructs. Numerous examples are provided to allow the reader to easily learn (and re-learn!) by example. Finally, a formal description of the language is provided in the Appendix. Overall, the presentation balances a learn-by-example style with a definitive discussion of the language. The Verilog TM Hardware Description Language, Second Edition assumes a knowledge of introductory logic design and software programming. As such, the book is of use to practicing integrated circuit design engineers, and undergraduate and graduate electrical or computer engineering students. The tutorial introduction provides enough information for students in an introductory logic design course to make simple use of logic simulation as part of their laboratory experience. The rest of the book could then be used in upper level logic design and architecture courses. The Verilog TM Hardware Description Language, Second Edition is a valuable resource for engineers and students interested in modeling digital systems. Included in the book comes a disk that contains a DOS version of the VeriWellTM Verilog simulator as well as examples from the book. The examples can be simulated and modified and resimulated. The simulator can also be used to solve the exercises.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very good.......2005-05-20

'The Verilog Hardware Description Language' is a very good tutorial and reference for intermediate designers.
I used this book in an upper level hardware design course. The course had a beginning Verilog course as a prerequisite. I hadn't taken that course but I had experience in digital design and VHDL. This book got me up to speed quickly with it's many examples and tight explanations of the Verilog Language.
Some pluses:
-Example designs are short, complete, and simulatable. Most are even synthesizable. This is good because an example can be quickly understood in its entirety. You don't need to flip through and stare and multiple pages to get an idea of what's going on. If you insist on having them, there are two long, practical examples towards the end of the book.
-The text is very well written. Similar in style to 'The C Programming Language by Kernighan and Ritchie.'
-Verilog 2001: Focuses on 2001, which is a little clearer than previous standards. I think all tools support 2001 by default now so that should be used.

Some minuses:
-Too expensive.
-Not enough discussion on how Verilog constructs are compiled and netlisted. This is critically important in FPGA/ASIC design. However, this book is not any worse than other HDL books in this respect. It's just so important, I really haven't seen anything that gives the topic the treatment it deserves.

Possible minus:
-Not really for beginners. This is not a hardware design text.

I haven't used the CD that came with the book so I can't comment on that. My guess is anything on that CD is not as good as industry standard tools like Mentor's ModelSim.
Overall a very impressive book that will get you to productivity quickly in a Verilog project.

2 out of 5 stars Could be great book, but shows too many deficiencies.......2002-10-09

This book should be used only by the experienced users that can filter out problematic sections.
Major problems:
- first chapter, "recommended" by authors for university courses, is extremely chaotic (begin..end blocks are called loops, exercises ask you to use loops before introducing them, etc.)
- cover of the latest edition claims coverage of the latest Verilog standard - unfortunately it is very poor coverage: new interesting features such as libraries and configurations are not mentioned at all!
- I had to work hard during many trainings to correct bad coding styles showing in students reading this book as their first Verilog publication
- the book is grossly overpriced...

Main advantage:
- good set of examples

5 out of 5 stars Read This First Before Coding in Verilog.......2002-05-18

The claim that this book has become the standard for learning Verilog is true.
I use Verilog a lot but I still wish I had read this book before writing Verilog codes.

4 out of 5 stars Had to have my own copy.......2001-11-12

Was sharing this book with my workmate. Found it pretty useful. I think its a great reference book to have.
It has
+ A great Index.
+ Good examples.
+ Been written by the masters of Verilog.
- A lot of words (ie some people might find it very 'wordy')

Every ASIC/FPGA designer I know has this one in there shelf. So go for it.

1 out of 5 stars Do not buy it.......2000-08-31

I will give it zero star if it is possible. Very bad organized and very expensive. The "Verilog HDL" from SAMIR PLANITKAR is a very good book especially for beginners.

    Book Description

In Interconnect-centric Design for Advanced SoC and NoC, we have tried to create a comprehensive understanding about on-chip interconnect characteristics, design methodologies, layered views on different abstraction levels and finally about applying the interconnect-centric design in system-on-chip design.
Traditionally, on-chip communication design has been done using rather ad-hoc and informal approaches that fail to meet some of the challenges posed by next-generation SOC designs, such as performance and throughput, power and energy, reliability, predictability, synchronization, and management of concurrency. To address these challenges, it is critical to take a global view of the communication problem, and decompose it along lines that make it more tractable. We believe that a layered approach similar to that defined by the communication networks community should also be used for on-chip communication design.
The design issues are handled on physical and circuit layer, logic and architecture layer, and from system design methodology and tools point of view. Formal communication modeling and refinement is used to bridge the communication layers, and network-centric modeling of multiprocessor on-chip networks and socket-based design will serve the development of platforms for SoC and NoC integration. Interconnect-centric Design for Advanced SoC and NoC is concluded by two application examples: interconnect and memory organization in SoCs for advanced set-top boxes and TV, and a case study in NoC platform design for more generic applications.

    Customer Reviews:

    1 out of 5 stars Lot's of mistakes.......2007-07-06

This book has lots of mistakes (many circuits don't work), the author kept many magazines through years and reprinted the circuits he found in them.

2 out of 5 stars One Step Above Paperweight or Doorstop.......2006-04-07

I already had Vol 1. of this series from decades ago. I thought the author had maybe improved the content and accuracy of his books. Sadly mistaken. Schematic diagrams are routinely missing values for parts or lacking important information. I have been in electronics for several decades and I again am greatly disappointed with lack of quality. I don't know if the author received permission to reprint these circuits on the condition he left out part values or what. For the money your better off somewhere else. Large voume of circuits diminished by poor quality of information.

4 out of 5 stars More of an encyclopedia of circuit ideas than circuits themselves.......2005-12-06

Several readers have criticized this book for its lack of working circuits. Let me say that I too have run up against this problem while lifting circuits from this book. However, I like to look at this book as a great compendium of circuit ideas that are going to need some modification if they are to work as advertised. I particularly liked the sections on game circuits, sound-effect circuits, and sound/voice activated circuits. I have built several of these, and I had to make some adjustments to each one. The point is that the basic ideas were all there along with pretty good descriptions for each circuit. The author also takes the time to introduce electronic parts with which you may not be familiar. If you are not already familiar with electronics, this is not the book for you, since familiarity with electronics and circuit design is assumed. However, for only $40 I think it is a great value for those with the correct background.

    4 out of 5 stars Perhaps I can help.......2000-11-21

This series contains thousands of schematics from a variety of sources. I'm quite sure that few, if any, were tested by the authors. However, based on the sources, most probably were tested by the originators. The explanations were sparse, and there were errors, some obvious. As such, these are probably not suitable for beginners. However, I find them to be very valuable, and I suspect that many experienced techs, engineers, hobbiests, and experimenters will as well. I often use part of one circuit as the seed of an idea for a circuit I am designing, with the end result bearing little resemblance to the original. These are filled with perhaps the most valuable of all resources - other people's ideas. I do wish the authors had been more careful to catch errors.

2 out of 5 stars FOrgive the Author he knows not what to do.......1999-12-07

After puchasing volumes 1-6 as a group and testing some of the circuits I spent many hours correcting the mistakes and errors in these circuits. I threw the books into the closet and designed from scratch my own circuits, it took far less time and they work when I'm done. I wish you could hold the authors accountable for lost time I could hire a design staff larger than Microsoft.

    Book Description

This book provides the advanced issues of FPGA design as the underlying theme of the work. In practice, an engineer typically needs to be mentored for several years before these principles are appropriately utilized. The topics that will be discussed in this book are essential to designing FPGA's beyond moderate complexity. The goal of the book is to present practical design techniques that are otherwise only available through mentorship and real-world experience.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great FPGA Reference Book.......2007-08-19

This is a great reference book for any level FPGA designer. This book skips past the basics unlike most books on FPGA design and jumps right into advanced topics that practical FPGA designers need to be aware of.

Plenty of discussion on the trade offs that must be faced in FPGA design based on you desired optimization target (speed, size, & power) and discussion of methods to achieve that goal. Lots of practical example code is used to illustrate each topic.

Discussion of simulation techniques and coverage which is becoming a key factor in verifying HDL based designs.

This book contains several topics that I have been waiting to see discussed well in a textbook including floorplanning and the pitfall of using asynchronous resets.

Besides HDL design techniques, the author discusses the PCB level design methodologies that must be used when designing an FPGA into a system. This disscussion is a great complement to this already fine book.

5 out of 5 stars The real design warriors guide.......2007-07-30

Finally! A book that actually talks about advanced design techniques instead of giving a historical overview of FPGA design.

I have to admit that I didn't read this book cover to cover. Rather, I use it for reference as needed. It's starting to get that same tabbed look that my other reference books have.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent coverage of FPGA design.......2007-07-10

I felt the author was well versed in real-world FPGA design. This book doesn't discuss any of the basics, but does an excellent job in explaining topics such as architecting for speed, synthesis, and place and route optimization, etc. This is the most useful FPGA book that I've read.

5 out of 5 stars Very pleased with book.......2007-07-10

I found the book to be quite helpful. I liked the presentation of practical examples. I would recommend this book any serious FPGA designer.

5 out of 5 stars From the author.......2007-07-10

For your convenience, I am publishing errata on my website: [...]

    Background on the book:

After having been exposed to a wide variety of designs in a wide range of industries, I began developing my own arsenal of techniques and heuristics from the combined knowledge of these experiences. When mentoring new FPGA design engineers, I draw my suggestions and recommendations from this experience. Up until now, many of these recommendations have referenced specific white papers and application notes (appnotes) that discuss specific practical aspects of FPGA design. The purpose of this book is to condense years of experience spread across numerous companies and teams of engineers, as well as much of the wisdom gathered from technology-specific white papers and appnotes, into a single book that can be used to refine a designer's knowledge and aid in becoming an advanced FPGA designer.

There are a number of books on FPGA design, but few of these truly address advanced real-world topics in detail. This book attempts to cut out the fat of unnecessary theory, speculation on future technologies, and the details of outdated technologies. It is written in a terse, concise format that addresses the various topics without wasting the reader's time. Many sections in this book assume that certain fundamentals are understood, and for the sake of brevity, background information and/or theoretical frameworks are not always covered in detail. Instead, this book covers in-depth topics that have been encountered in real-world designs. In some ways, this book replaces a limited amount of industry experience and access to an experienced mentor and will hopefully prevent the reader from learning a few things the hard way. It is the advanced, practical approach that makes this book unique.

One thing to note about this book is that it will not flow from cover to cover like a novel. For a set of advanced topics that are not intrinsically tied to one another, this type of flow is impossible without blatantly filling it with fluff. Instead, to organize this book, I have ordered the chapters in such a way that they follow a typical design flow. The first chapters discuss architecture, then simulation, then synthesis, then floorplanning, and so on. This is illustrated in the Flowchart of Contents provided at the beginning of the book. To provide accessibility for future reference, the chapters are listed side-by-side with the relevant block in the flow diagram. The remaining chapters in this book are heavy with examples. For brevity, I have selected Verilog as the default HDL (Hardware Description Language). Xilinx as the default FPGA vendor, and Synplicity as the default synthesis and floorplanning tool. Most of the topics covered in this book can easily be mapped to VHDL, Altera, Mentor Graphics, and so forth, but to include all of these for completeness would only serve to cloud the important points. Even if the reader of this book uses these other technologies, this book will still deliver its value. If you have any feedback, good or bad, feel free to email me at the address listed in the preface.
