5 out of 5 stars The essential work to understanding aerosols.......1999-12-03

As the New Testament is to Christians and the Torah is to Jews, this work is the essential literature to understanding aerosols and aerosol technology. You enter as a novice with human explanations of terms, proceed through most of the mundate and requisite statistics, and then are allowed to explode through the fascination that is aerosols. Through comprehensive, yet comprehensable language, this is the first and only way to understand what has previously been an elusive and disperse knowledge. Each edition incorporates current tech and thought. A best, first.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to aerosol behavior in various applications!.......1999-02-02

Excellent guide to particle behaviour...I am involved in research where an indepth understanding of aerosol behavior is a must in electrostatic powder coating and separation. This is an excellent resource and should be a part of your professional collection.

5 out of 5 stars Please write one more, Dr. Hinds!.......1997-09-30

How is the aerosol from hair spray related to a carbonated drink or a sponge? It all has to do with what is finely dispersed and what medium suspends this dispersion. With these provoking thoughts, William C. Hinds leads us into the partculars of suspended particles: aerosols. Dr. Hinds has accomplished an amazing feat here. Understanding this complicated field requires familiarity with at least one year of college calculus. With an eloquent writing style laced with differentials and derivations, he describes the various phenomena of aerosols, including particle settling speed, respirability, light scattering, dust explosions, and much more. His description of aerosol measurement techniques is interesting and detailed. (You would be surprised at how complicated are the physics of filtration!) What is truly special, however, is his ability to effectively describe in words what the equations are saying. You can grasp a feel for the phenomena described even if some of the differentials leave you stumped. With problems (and their answers--NOT solutions!) at the end of each chapter, this is an ideal text for graduate students in public health, engineering, industrial hygiene, or toxicology. Professionals working in these fields, however, will find the book a valuable reference. The text is filled with helpful tables and figures, and the more rigorous proofs of important formulas are presented in appendices. References end each chapter.

Already 15 years old, the book remains a benchmark. Oh--and the sponge? The disperse phase is air, the suspending medium is solid. Hmm.

5 out of 5 stars The true science from the true scientists.......2007-07-05

A clearly, yet thoroughly physical point of view constitutes the framework of this book. Written by pioneers in the field of protein physics, the book amazingly guides the readers to "think" of protein and raises fundamental questions in the field of soft-condensed matter physics. A must for everyone who wants to have a correct and scientific vision of proteins.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2005-12-13

This is a magnificent book, remarkable for its breadth, depth, and accessibility.

Elegant discussions of background material including topics in quantum chemistry
and thermodynamics render this book a self-contained tutorial on the many-faceted problems of
protein physics. Because of its structure as a series of increasingly sophisticated lectures, it should be accessible to a wide variety of audiences with diverse backgrounds.

To top it off, the text is beautifully written, at points nearly poetic including even a Greek chorus, a pleasure to read and to study. I am reminded of a few other great lecture series in science where razor-sharp intellects explain complicated phenomena from soup to nuts with wisdom and wit.

Anyone from professional scientist to motivated novice in almost any analytic discipline should find this a valuable introduction and detailed study of protein physics.

5 out of 5 stars Ptitsyn's 'Protein Physics': a book of worth........2002-11-10

A book of worth from the legendary institution, PhysTech (Moscow). Ptitsyn's 'Protein Physics' is a valuable source of information on folding thermodynamics and kinetics both to beginners and professionals in this (and related) fields. No more words. Strongly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars By far the best book on this subject.......2002-10-08

Excellent book for both beginners and experts. I will recommend it to students as a source of initial knowledge not only on proteins, but also on biopolymers and biophysics in general. For instance, presentation of forces is superb. I am also positive that every expert will find new non trivial insights on great many subtle points of this difficult topic.

Book Description

The Body Electric tells the fascinating story of our bioelectric selves. Robert O. Becker, a pioneer in the filed of regeneration and its relationship to electrical currents in living things, challenges the established mechanistic understanding of the body. He found clues to the healing process in the long-discarded theory that electricity is vital to life. But as exciting as Becker's discoveries are, pointing to the day when human limbs, spinal cords, and organs may be regenerated after they have been damaged, equally fascinating is the story of Becker's struggle to do such original work. The Body Electric explores new pathways in our understanding of evolution, acupuncture, psychic phenomena, and healing.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars The Body Electric.......2007-09-12

The information was not what I expected in regard to a misleading title. Anyone in the acupuncture field, as I am, should not be persuaded to buy this book. It basically deals with reptilian experiments done 50 or more years ago. It is a biology book, in a sense. I wish I had not purchased it!

5 out of 5 stars Ohh my... This has to be one of the most interesting books I've ever read!.......2007-08-18

Honestly, if I could give this book 10 stars, I would.

I was worried this would be some hippy-dippy, new age ride, based on some of the chapter headings. But concealed behind the facade of odd chapter headings is a truly amazing scientific work. I'm blown away. Becker & Selden go into excruciatingly beautiful detail of any number of experiments exposing some of the electrical plumbing and electrical signaling going on in complex bodies. This includes bone regeneration through electrical currents, partial or complete limb regeneration in Rats and salamanders through electrical processes. It refers to known cases of young children (under 11 y/o) regrowing fingertips that have been severed in accidents and NOT been operated on, or had skin grafts that inhibit the regenerative process. They also go into the removal of bacterial infections with positive silver electrodes approximating the body's natural healing electrical currents. (I think I now know why colloidal silver is popular as an anti-infections agent and silver nitrate {I think?} is used when babies are born to ward off infection...)

This book is written with the lay reader in mind. You don't need a medical background to understand and be enraptured by this book. As I may have said already (or not), I can't put it down. It's THAT GOOD! I hope this stuff is taught in medical school and more research goes into this field. I have the feeling it holds the key to higher level human regeneration and life extension (through making use of and maintaining the body's existing electrical systems)...

Just... WOW!

5 out of 5 stars Ahead of his time..........2007-02-05

I'm not really one for science books, but this book has got to be the exception. If you have any chronic or 'incurable' disease, try to hold on - because fortunately there are at least a few doctors and researchers out there who are bright enough to think outside the box and challenge existing theories regarding the workings of the human body - in particular, the electricity of the human body and how it coincides with the universe.

The author walks the reader through his discoveries that not only is it feasible for the human body to regenerate (just like the salamander's), but most likely, this is what our bodies were designed to do from the get-go, until we surrounded ourselves with electromagnetic fields of pollution so powerful that our perfectly designed DNA, immune systems, cardiovascular systems, endocrine systems, neuromuscular systems became 'confused' by all the external commotion.

The author of this book represents what research 'should be' about, but for the most part isn't, and the reader cannot help but become a part of this researcher's emotion.

If I ever have a chance to meet the author of this book, I will be honored. Until then, I will recommend this book to anyone who values the perfectly amazing life God gave them and the perfectly synchronized universe He created to sustain that life. I only pray that there are more reseachers out there bravely willing to poke holes in the current theories that the human body is merely a collection of chemical reactions, unopposed by a higher force.

The author touches on this, and I am in agreement - I have to wonder if perhaps all the bad we see around us today - broken marriages, suicides, bombings, disease, pain, suffering, greed - is this merely a by-product of all the manmade electromagnetic distress surrounding each and every one of us on a daily basis? After reading this book, you will think twice about what we've sacrificed for the sake of 'technology' - everlasting life on earth.

5 out of 5 stars Very interesting!.......2007-01-10

If you are pretty well versed in physiology and basic biology, you will probably love this book! As an engineer and experimental scientist Dr. Becker opened my eyes to a whole new area of study which, politics aside, has the potential to change almost every person's life.

5 out of 5 stars It is the best non-fiction book I have ever read.......2006-08-12

The first half the book held my attention like when I read a Clive Cussler adventure.

Dr. Becker patiently explains both biology and electricity building up to providing the understanding of regeneration as his research progressed.

The next half of the book explains first how electromagentism affects humans, then the potential hazards of electromagnetism are addressed.

Overall this book is very well written and I recommend it to all my friends whether they are engineers like me or not.

Book Description

Edward Leedskalnin, was known as an important engineer who with a fourth grade education wrote major works on his theories of magnetism. This title, Magnetic Current, is one of his better known works and is still used widely by classes studying magnets, magnetic currents and magnetic poles. This work is still used widely today in science classes, engineering students and by individuals learning scientific trades.

1 out of 5 stars A confused, poorly educated con-man with a penchant for carving.......2007-04-04

It's amazing how many new-age space cadets and "alternative science" devotees jump all over this kind of meaningless nonsense and eventually turn it into cult-driven holy manna. I have an open mind. Show me, using GOOD science, how a guy who some say can "float" a ten ton rock into place twenty feet above his head can do this without using heavy lifting equipment and maybe I'll consider it. Just because "nobody saw him" using normal heavy lifting tools doesn't mean he didn't. After all, David Copperfield didn't REALLY make the space shuttle disappear. It just LOOKED like he did. It was AN ILLUSION. Perhaps if all the new age junkies would just put down their dowsing rods and crystal beads and stop for a minute to consider Occam's razor, which is probably the least used but singularly BEST tool with which to explain this kind if thing, the REAL result would be much more satisfying for everyone. The same people who look at the unbelievable complexities of a computer sitting atop their desks and readily accept that a group of humans somewhere devised the whole thing using standard science do not hesitate donning their aluminum foil caps and declaring that "alien forces" must have been involved in Coral Castle simply because somebody told them that no one ever saw the guy with a motorized crane. Amazing. The entire book is nothing more than the ridiculous ramblings of a confused, nearly illiterate little man who has perpetrated a great hoax on an entire population of naive, unsophisticated dupes. Hard to read gibberish, vague and enigmatic, meaningless, pointless nonsense. Forget it and buy yourself a Playboy.

1 out of 5 stars Rating depends on reason for reading.......2004-06-18

I saw a blurb on some scifi show regarding Edward Leedskalnin and his Coral Castle, which prompted me to do more research on the Internet. I was fascinated and curious and I thought I knew what I was getting into when I purchased this book along with "How to Read His Writings" by Marlinski. My complaint is about the reprint and editing of "Magnetic Currents" and not about the content or Ed's writing technique. If you want to try to decode Ed's notebooks, DO NOT BUY THIS VERSION (Reprint by Health Research). They fixed spelling, grammar and did not use the original type fonts - all of which are believed to be clues about his work. They did not use any of the pictures from his original pamphlets, so that part of the puzzle is also missing. I gave it only one star because I could not use it for the reason I purchased it. If you buy this book to learn more about magnetic currents, I'm not sure you'll be too happy, either. Ed is kind of hard to follow, which makes me think there is more to his writing than his words. The Coral Castle website has a Gift Shop where they sell his writings, but I don't know if the booklets are copies of the originals or if they are also selling a "fixed" version.

5 out of 5 stars For some it is given to know the mysteries of God..........2004-03-10

I have neither purchased nor read Ed's work (in fact today is the first time I have ever heard of him), but by reading some of the reviews I am reminded of the Prophet Joseph Smith Jr. I'm not saying that Ed was a prophet by any means but from all I've read about Ed so far is that people often discount what he says because "he only had a fourth grade education" or his grammar and spelling errors are terribly obvious. Well, I don't think geniuses are too concerned with that. From what I've heard, Ed went to the Library nearly every day. So much for a fourth grade education. How many people that hold Bachelor's degrees study and learn daily? I have a book that contains actual writings of Joseph Smith. He is probably one the smartest and greatest men to walk this continent yet you look at some of his writings and have to chuckle! Maybe that's part of the problem with the educational system today. They focus so much on getting your English perfect and brainwash you into thinking that if a person has not mastered the English language or does not have an editor that has, then he/she does not know what they are talking about... All that is important is that you hold a degree right?

5 out of 5 stars The Publisher Misses The Point Of The Book.......2003-04-13

After studying Ed Leedskalnin for a while now, I just had to buy the book. But really for only one reason. To get the original picture of the perpectual motion holder drawing that came with the original pamplet. Instead I recieve a book with a picture of a atom with electrons on the cover. Which anyone one who has studied Leedskalin knows that Mr. Leedskalin did not believe in the existence of Electrons. This was a big disappointment. Other than that the book seems is very interesting and a must read for anyone interested in alternative physics. I do believe though that the publisher should include this picture if they are going to say they print up old and rare books in their entirety.

3 out of 5 stars umm, isn't possible he used levers?.......2003-03-25

It's said that lil'ol Ed used nothing more than parts he'd aquired at a local junkyard and the knowledge of ancient Egyptians. Some teenagers actually claimed they had witnessed him "floating a large stone" and "singing to it". This fits the pattern of stories over the years that say there is an acoustic property to whatever effects the levitation of heavy objects. The Ancients, Monks in the 1700's (or something) and now Ed in the 1920's with Coral Castle, aka Rock Gate Park. Either way, the answer to levitation isn't in this book, but Ed would like you to think it is and pine much over it.

Book Description

Published to glowing praise in 1990, Science for All Americans defined the science-literate American--describing the knowledge, skills, and attitudes all students should retain from their learning experience--and offered a series of recommendations for reforming our system of education in science, mathematics, and technology. Benchmarks for Science Literacy takes this one step further. Created in close consultation with a cross-section of American teachers, administrators, and scientists, Benchmarks elaborates on the recommendations to provide guidelines for what all students should know and be able to do in science, mathematics, and technology by the end of grades 2, 5, 8, and 12. These grade levels offer reasonable checkpoints for student progress toward science literacy, but do not suggest a rigid formula for teaching. Benchmarks is not a proposed curriculum, nor is it a plan for one: it is a tool educators can use as they design curricula that fit their student's needs and meet the goals first outlined in Science for All Americans. Far from pressing for a single educational program, Project 2061 advocates a reform strategy that will lead to more curriculum diversity than is common today. IBenchmarks emerged from the work of six diverse school-district teams who were asked to rethink the K-12 curriculum and outline alternative ways of achieving science literacy for all students. These teams based their work on published research and the continuing advice of prominent educators, as well as their own teaching experience. Focusing on the understanding and interconnection of key concepts rather than rote memorization of terms and isolated facts, Benchmarks advocates building a lasting understanding of science and related fields. In a culture increasingly pervaded by science, mathematics, and technology, science literacy require habits of mind that will enable citizens to understand the world around them, make some sense of new technologies as they emerge and grow, and deal sensibly with problems that involve evidence, numbers, patterns, logical arguments, and technology--as well as the relationship of these disciplines to the arts, humanities, and vocational sciences--making science literacy relevant to all students, regardless of their career paths. If Americans are to participate in a world shaped by modern science and mathematics, a world where technological know-how will offer the keys to economic and political stability in the twenty-first century, education in these areas must become one of the nation's highest priorities. Together with Science for All Americans, Benchmarks for Science Literacy offers a bold new agenda for the future of science education in this country, one that is certain to prepare our children for life in the twenty-first century.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource.......2006-02-26

This resource is for teachers who are interested in understanding science as it pertains to the classroom. It provides information as to what students need to know by the end of each specific grade level. I highly recommend this excellent resource for those who are pursuing National Board Certification and/or those who are pursuing excellence in science instruction.

5 out of 5 stars A Help for Science Teachers.......2003-01-30

I teach science in a small, very rural school to grades 7-12. I have been using this book for the first time this year.

I like how this book makes the benchmarks clear and specific. It doesn't just say, "Students will understand the structure of atoms" the way my state's standards do. It spells out exactly what the student should know about the structure of the atom.

I used to run a very textbook driven curriculum, but I found that the textbooks were woefully inadequate, but I lacked direction as to what I should be doing. When I recently changed schools, I also discovered this book, and it presented the answer.

At my new school, my textbooks are only a reference that mostly sit on the shelf. I have designed my curriculum more around these standards and my state standards.

This book makes it clear that there are many topics that I have taught that don't need to be taught. For example, during the past 2 years, I taught photosynthesis and respiration from the book: electron transport chain, pyruvate, and all. This year, I talked more about the carbon and the energy and where all the atoms went. My students this year can actually answer questions about these subjects. For the most part, they understand them. My previous students did not understand.

This book also has an excellent section on dealing with vocabulary. Much of science education substitutes vocabulary for understanding. I am now using many fewer technical words, and even then only introducing those words when the students understand the concepts.

I don't agree with some of the things in this book. There are a few subjects I think are more important than the authors do. There are also a few subjects the authors think are more important than I do. I also dislike their emphasis on attitudes about science and the amount of time they spend on the culture and history of science. I would like to see more emphasis on content.

Overall, however, this will make you a better teacher. If you are a parent, it will equip you to question what your child is learning (at any level) and to get your school to start making the changes our education system needs.

5 out of 5 stars Benchmarks in designing curriculum.......2000-06-11

Many states have created specific standards for students to acheive throughtout their schooling. This publication is extremely useful in helping to understand the intent of standards and what they look like in the classroom. Anyone that is working on science and math curriculum must have a copy of this. It is also very useful for new teachers to get insight into exemplary content and practices. This document also helps people understand misconceptions that students develop over certain concepts. I've been using it continuously and have bought copies for many people in my school district.

        Book Description

This comprehensive handbook provides up-to-date knowledge and practical advice from established authorities in aerosol science. It covers the principles and practices of bioaerosol sampling, descriptions and comparisons of bioaerosol samplers, calibration methods, and assay techniques, with an emphasis on practicalities, such as which sampler to use and where it should be placed. The text also offers critiques concerning handling the samples to provide representative and meaningful assays for their viability, infectivity, and allergenicity. A wide range of microbes-viz., viruses, bacteria, fungi and pollens, and their fragments-are considered from such perspectives. Bioaerosols Handbook is divided into four parts, providing a wide-ranging reference work, as well as a practical guide on how best to sample and assay bioaerosols using current technology.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The bioaerosols "bible".......2005-07-13

Considered by some to be THE overview reference book for bioaerosols, it covers their physical aspects, sampling, sample stability, instrument calibration, and multiple measurement approaches. It also describes problems specific to residential and industrial environments, including laboratories, hospitals, animal houses, and the particulars of pollen, fungi, molds, and bacteria.

I'm writing this review in 2005, and some of the material is a bit dated. The review of laser and optical measurement techniques gives some good background, but is no longer state of the art. Nevertheless, it is a very valuable reference for anyone studying bioaerosols for environmental or homeland security considerations.

5 out of 5 stars The Bioaerosols Handbook.......2001-07-23

The handbook deals with the subject of bioaerosols on a broad but in depth basis. It deals with the practicalities of sampling, calibration and sample assay methods without being too theoretical. It's style is both technical but easy to read and understand, being written by experts from around the world. Each chapter has its own approach giving a refreshingly different perspective of each aspect of bioaerosol analysis. It's really a bioaerosol bible for anyone interested in biological aerosols and $... isn't bad for 600+ pages with a limited circulation. By the way it's brief specifically excluded viruses, so they don't get a lot of text devoted to them compared to bacteria, fungi etc.

It hasn't really dated that much either since 1995 (I am writing in 2006). Indeed even classic texts like 'The microbiology of the atmosphere' PH Gregory: Leonard Hill (1973) still pack in a lot of relevent data - I still love reading this book as well. By the way I wrote the chapter on Modern Microscopic Methods in the handbook - but I get no payment for sales or endorsement and I think the other twenty chapters are great. The pioneering UK image analysis manufacturers mentioned in this chapter are now long gone, so these days try the likes of MetaMorph, Leica QWin, Image pro Plus, Andora Technology and Openlabs image analysis software (they all work on the same basic principles anyway). Plus confocal microscopes, and other new types like TIRF, are now far more widespread in use.

Why not also try a library loan of :
        1. Atmospheric Microbial Aerosols, B.Lighthart, A.J.Mohr, Chapman & Hall, 1994

        3. Architectural Design and Indoor Microbial Pollution, R.B.Kundsin, Oxford University Press, 1988

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good review, too many errors for 2nd edition.......2006-08-18

This is the second edition of this review text, yet there are numerous errors in the text and practice exams. As long as you know what is going on you can catch them all. Overall, useful in pointing out the trivia needed for ABR.

5 out of 5 stars Great Review Book for Radiological Physics.......2005-07-20

If you are a medical physicist or equivalent studying for Part I of the ABR exam or equivalent, this is a must have book. The Q&A are relevant and explained well. Overall great value for the money.

5 out of 5 stars Superb and essential for physics boards.......2004-07-04

Using Huda as my primary source along with multiple years of Raphex questions and a single set of San Antonio review questions, I was able to do very well on the physics boards.

I would strongly recommend purchasing this book as all the material it contains is HIGH yield on the physics boards. Well-organized, concise, and easy to read.

5 out of 5 stars All you need for physics for boards.......2003-10-30

Huda, raphex and old questions are all you need. In that order. Even the fine print and tables in HUDA should be memorized.

        4 out of 5 stars Slight correction.......2003-08-18

There is a seperate chapter in radiation safety, however this information is also scattered throughout the text. I would have preferred for all the material to be stuck in one section. Other people may prefer differently, but I find it difficult to remember all the factoids and magic numbers. Maybe a compromise solution would be a quick index section at the end listing all the "must know" numbers and formulas.
