Digital Transmission Lines: Computer Modeling and Analysis adopts a unique approach which offers the reader an intuitive understanding of the causes and nature of crosstalk as well as the conceptual and mathematical tools to control it. It begins with an introduction to the transmission line equations, progresses to the solution for the signals on networks of multi-wire lines in layered dielectric media, and further develops a method to include the skin effect in the propagation algorithm. All of the algorithms developed are illustrated in computer codes (in the C programming language). The codes are discussed in the book and included on a compact disk (CD-ROM). The text's most significant feature is its method of simulating crosstalk between closely spaced traces on a circuit board and providing design tools for its control. The author explains methods that he has successfully used to simulate multi-wire transmission line signal propagation; provides explanations that enhance students' understanding of propagation and crosstalk; and uses mathematical algorithms for their numerical evaluation. He also describes design methods for reducing crosstalk between traces on a multi-layered circuit board. Numerous exercises, hints, problems, and computer code illustrate each of the algorithms developed and encourage the reader to become actively involved. An accompanying CD-ROM contains all source code from the text as well as executable demo versions of commercial CAD programs that illustrate use of the principles in the book. A mathematical foundation for transmission line analysis is formulated that goes far beyond the numerous books that contain mere rules of thumb from the RF frequency domain lore. Combined with the core of the software that became part of a HyperLynx tool, this is great value for its money and the time spent understanding the theory and using the tools provided.

In recent years, the combination of the maturation of mathematical models of electromagentic phenomena, the rapid progress in computational technology and the computational experience of science and engineering has resulted in significant advances in the field of computational applied electromagnetics. However, even with the most advanced computer hardware, some problems have not been solved successfully. This means that advanced hardware technology, sophisticated software architecture and ``smart'' problem solving approaches are necessary ingredients but, by themselves, are not sufficient. They must be combined together in an interdisciplinary environment to solve today's challenging problems. Good Starting Point for Building a Foundation.......2003-02-17
Though 20 years old, or "lacking modern ... issues" as the previous reviewer said, this book presents the fundamental material of semiconductor device modeling in a logical and organized way. Though recent developments are not covered in this book, the fundamentals of how to discretize a PDE (i.e., poisson eqn, continuity eqs, etc) using finite difference methods, etc., don't change, and this book is a good starter for learning that. If you want to understand the concepts behind device simulators like DESSIS, MEDICI, PISCES, etc., this is a good place to start.
I'd give it 5 stars if it was written in the later 90's, and therefore had up to date info on mobility and recombination models, etc, and more on the hydrodynamic formulations.
Great starter for those into device modeling.......2001-01-09
I have often referenced this book for due to the nature of my graduate research. It is a good introduction to the finer points of semiconductor device modeling. (The stuff not really emphasized at the undergraduate level) However, this book is lacking with respect to many modern device structures and issues. (e. g. power transistors, HEMT's, III-V compound information) I still recommend it as reference material.
