Book Description
The CMOS technology area has quickly grown, calling for a new text--and here it is, covering the analysis and design of CMOS integrated circuits that practicing engineers need to master to succeed. Filled with many examples and chapter-ending problems, the book not only describes the thought process behind each circuit topology, but also considers the rationale behind each modification. The analysis and design techniques focus on CMOS circuits but also apply to other IC technologies.
Customer Reviews:
Every designer in my company has this book.......2007-09-17
This is by far the best book for analog designer. The only thing I wish to see is to include some simulation examples such as: AC analysis, noise analysis...
Also, as the technology moves to sub-micron, long channel approximation is no longer accurate. I wonder if author can comment on how to size the transistors for fewer spice iterations.
Maybe we will see them in the 2nd edition.
Grown appreciation.......2007-06-02
The more my knowledge grew, the more I have appreciated returning to this book as a reference compared to any of the others. Razavi's explanations are lucid and directly to the point allowing me to quickly recall/re-understand concepts that I either once grasped and forgot or never really understood in the first place.
It is OK. There could be better ones.......2006-11-12
I have used this book in a graduate class. It is good and very rigorous. It has good amount of examples and plenty of end of chapter problems. It is a good treatment of the subject. However, it might be hard as introductory.
Disappoiting.......2006-03-07
The book is too theory-oriented; not suitable for engineers. I felt disappointed.
And the chapters on PLL and switched-cap. are too common-sense! No use at all for practising engineers...I don't want to recommend this book -
Great book........2006-01-29
Difficult Side
Read Sedra/Smith book before trying this one. It is really hard to follow. It's hard to differentiate between small and large signal analysis, since author uses the same notation for both. Watch out!
Good Side:
Book is on CMOS analog ICs, so it's specific.
Book is very thorough. Behzad Razavi explains the function of each resistor in a circuit. Book teaches on a high level. Author put in much effort.

It looks like a gorgeous nostalgia trip to judge by the cover image alone. The photo is of an old school record player that lies unplugged, a white label test-pressing waiting on the turntable, while a band of paper wrapped around the cover announces the title in ye olde woodblock-looking type, American Music. A reading of the small type on the back cover reveals the image to be the very record and turntable left in Elvis Presley's bedroom the day he died, and the mind reels, thinking about whether the King listened to this record on that day or not, and who are the Stamps, anyway? An excellent selection of musician portraits interspersed with crumbly wooden jook joints and wide open fields in the South, American Music covers a wide gamut of jazz, blues, punk, country, hip-hop, rock and roll, folk and gospel musicians. And while most of the pictures were shot between 1999 and 2002, some go back to the early 1970s, when Leibovitz first became Rolling Stone magazine's chief photographer. Some of the artists are very well-known (Michael Stipe, Dolly Parton, Bob Dylan) and some of them are not (Jessie Mae Hemphill, Other Turner, Carlos Coy). Leibovitz really has a way of relaxing her performers, and this is a great part of her gift. Even when the pictures are so posed as to be ridiculous (like, what's Michael Stipe doing on that bedbug-ridden mattress-the guy's a billionaire?), she catches her subjects at their most "real." They are lost in their music, or just doing some "real person" thing (look, there is Beck in his cardoes Beck really drive his own car?). The presentation may be a little hokey, but this book is sure to please most any music fan. --Mike McGonigal
Book Description
The impulse to do
AMERICAN MUSIC, writes famed photographer Annie Leibovitz, “came from a desire to return to my original subject and look at it with a mature eye. Bring my experience to it…make it a real American tapestry.” Her ambitious idea became
AMERICAN MUSIC, a stunning collection of photographs of the musicians, places and people that enrich the landscape of American music.
As Rolling Stone’s chief photographer for over thirteen years, Leibovitz created a legendary body of work. Her portraits of some of the world’s most talented musicians capture more than the performer, they convey the art of making music. For
AMERICAN MUSIC, Leibovitz traveled across the country to juke joints in the Mississippi Delta, honkytonks in Texas, and jazz clubs in New Orleans “to take pictures in places that mean something.” In her signature style, she shares stunning portraits of American greats --
B.B. King,
Willie Nelson,
Bonnie Raitt,
Bruce Springsteen,
Beck,
Bob Dylan,
Mary J. Blige,
Jon Bon Jovi, S
teve Earle,
Ryan Adams,
Miles Davis,
Etta James,
Pete Seeger,
Emmylou Harris,
Tom Waits,
The Dixie Chicks,
Dr. Dre, The Roots and many more.
AMERICAN MUSIC includes a commentary about the American Music project by Leibovitz, short essays by musicians
Patti Smith,
Rosanne Cash,
Steve Earle,
Mos Def,
Ryan Adams, and
Beck as well as biographical sketches of all the musicians.
Customer Reviews:
Good for fans of Photography and Music.......2007-01-28
If you love the blues, or love photography this is a great book. While not specific to just Blues musicians this book just makes me think of good old delta blues. The prints in this book shine like they were hand printed by Annie herself. Theres a heart and soul driving this book from begining to end.
This is a more personal project for Annie Leibovitz and so doenst allway have her studio style inside.
That does not mean that each photograph is not amazing for they are, but some are a smaller more
candid world that Annie Leibotiz is capturing.
An intimate collection.......2005-08-08
I just saw this exhibit at our MoMA, and the work is outstanding. Some of the images are color, some black and white. There are a number of styles and artists, ranging from the very famous to those unknown outside of their small communities. The point is that these are images of musicians--it's that simple.
Sometimes, Liebovitz's work is witty, sometimes it is unflinching in its honest portrayal. There is vulnerability in the subjects of her black and whites because they are so close, often just the face of the subject. To term them "ugly" is simply wrong. It is rare to see behind the artifice of celebrity images and see performers without makeup and with their skin texture and pores visible. Some of the photos are taken in people's homes, or backstage rather than on a set. This lends considerably to the intimacy and honesty that she is trying to convey.
If you want shots of your favorite singer looking oh so pretty, go to their PR person. This is a serious body of work from a renowned photographer. It blends both her celebrity work with her own private interests in portrait photography for non-commercial audiences.
Spectacular Photos!.......2005-08-02
The catalog is gorgeous, the photographs are indeed spectacular. While the written entries were wonderful, they were too few and left me wanting more. I guess that's a good thing!
Beautiful Photographs from a master, however unfinished.......2004-11-17
In response to another review on this site, clearly if you think the book has "poor aesthetic quality" You know nothing of photography or art for that matter.
The people in this book are beautifully portrayed in silver and in color. Clearly the photographs were taken over a number of years, which shows the scope of the project.
The only thing that I find wrong with this project is that it may be unfinished. The book is called American Music. Cleary that is why there are mainly blues, rock and roll and hip, country/folk and hip hop artists. Obviosly everyone would like to see their favorite artists in the book and have the ones they dislike removed. I however feel that this is the artists choice, and we have to live with it. If Leibovits decides to put out a 'Part II' it would do all of us a favor.
The only reason why I don't give this a 5 out of 5 stars is that most of the photographs don't grab you by the face and demand your attention. The ones that grab me the most are the artists I folllow, so perhaps there is something in that. Some measure of knowlegde that must accompany the photographs. Buy the book anyways...and listen to more blues albums. I didn't check this review for spelling, HA!
Classical?.......2004-04-07
OK, think for a minute what it means deep down to chronical AMERICAN music.
That would be music that comes from the Delta and from Chicago and spread from there as essential Blues, Jazz, Rock and Roll and later forms of Pop. Classical came to us from Europe, what these artists represent are the outcome of truly American born music. I'm staggered that anyone would not make that connection..
And yes, we know that some may find Iggy Pop "ugly", but American Music isn't all about chicks that look like Britney Spears..

Book Description
Circuit simulation is essential in integrated circuit design, and the accuracy of circuit simulation depends on the accuracy of the transistor model. BSIM3v3 (BSIM for Berkeley Short-channel IGFET Model) has been selected as the first MOSFET model for standardization by the Compact Model Council, a consortium of leading companies in semiconductor and design tools. In the next few years, many fabless and integrated semiconductor companies are expected to switch from dozens of other MOSFET models to BSIM3. This will require many device engineers and most circuit designers to learn the basics of BSIM3. MOSFET Modeling & BSIM3 User's Guide explains the detailed physical effects that are important in modeling MOSFETs, and presents the derivations of compact model expressions so that users can understand the physical meaning of the model equations and parameters. It is the first book devoted to BSIM3. It treats the BSIM3 model in detail as used in digital, analog and RF circuit design. It covers the complete set of models, i.e., I-V model, capacitance model, noise model, parasitics model, substrate current model, temperature effect model and non quasi-static model. MOSFET Modeling & BSIM3 User's Guide not only addresses the device modeling issues but also provides a user's guide to the device or circuit design engineers who use the BSIM3 model in digital/analog circuit design, RF modeling, statistical modeling, and technology prediction. This book is written for circuit designers and device engineers, as well as device scientists worldwide. It is also suitable as a reference for graduate courses and courses in circuit design or device modelling. Furthermore, it can be used as a textbook for industry courses devoted to BSIM3. MOSFET Modeling & BSIM3 User's Guide is comprehensive and practical. It is balanced between the background information and advanced discussion of BSIM3. It is helpful to experts and students alike.

Customer Reviews:
Good Coverage; But..........2006-02-27
quite out-of-date unfortunately... Especially on the coverage on switched-capacitor circuit techniques. Do not choose this book if you want to design modern analog/mixed-signal circuits, for instance, sigma delta modulators or low voltage (lower than 3.3 V) switched-capacitor circuits.
A must have for analog MOS designers.......1998-11-04
Analog MOS Integrated Circuits for Signal Processing is a must have for anyone doing IC MOS design or analysis. The authors take the reader through a logical progression of modern MOS design methods and analysis. Highly recommended reference.

Silicon-on-Insulator Technology: Materials to VLSI
ASIN: 0792377621 |
Book Description
Market demand for microprocessor performance has motivated continued scaling of CMOS through a succession of lithography generations. Quantum mechanical limitations to continued scaling are becoming readily apparent. Partially Depleted Silicon-on-Insulator (PD-SOI) technology is emerging as a promising means of addressing these limitations. It also introduces additional design complexity which must be well understood.
SOI Circuit Design Concepts first introduces the student or practicing engineer to SOI device physics and its fundamental idiosyncrasies. It then walks the reader through realizations of these mechanisms which are observed in common high-speed microprocessor designs. Rules of thumb and comparisons to conventional bulk CMOS are offered to guide implementation. SOI's ultimate advantage, however, may lie in the unique circuit topologies it supports; a number of these novel new approaches are described as well.
SOI Circuit Design Concepts draws upon the latest industry literature as well as the firsthand experiences of its authors. It is an ideal introduction to the concepts of governing SOI use and provides a firm foundation for further study of this exciting new technology paradigm.

A very good introductary book on SOI. But I felt that the SOI device Electrical prperties could have been dealt in greater detail. Neverthless, this book is really good for circuit designers who have just been initiated into the world of SOI.

Book Description
An important continuation to CMOS: Circuit Design, Layout, and Simulation
The power of mixed-signal circuit designs, and perhaps the reason they are replacing analog-only designs in the implementation of analog interfaces, comes from the marriage of analog circuits with digital signal processing. This book builds on the fundamental material in the author's previous book, CMOS: Circuit Design, Layout, and Simulation, to provide a solid textbook and reference for mixed-signal circuit design. The coverage is both practical and in-depth, integrating experimental, theoretical, and simulation examples to drive home the why and the how of doing mixed-signal circuit design. Some of the highlights of this book include:
- A practical/theoretical approach to mixed-signal circuit design with an emphasis on oversampling techniques
- An accessible and useful alternative to hard-to-digest technical papers without losing technical depth
- Coverage of delta-sigma data converters, custom analog and digital filter design, design with submicron CMOS processes, and practical at-the-bench deadbug prototyping techniques
- Hundreds of worked examples and questions covering all areas of mixed-signal circuit design
A helpful companion Web site, http://cmosedu.com, provides worked solutions to textbook problems, SPICE simulation netlist examples, and discussions concerning mixed-signal circuit design.
Customer Reviews:
A must have for mixed signal design........2007-08-21
The only complete and conclusive text on mixed-signal circuit design so far. Design examples on the book website also serve as great supplement to the book. I have compared with all other contemporary texts, and this one stands out among those. A must have for aspiring mixed-signal analog designers.
Best book on mixed-signal circuit design.......2002-09-25
This is the best book I have found so far on CMOS mixed-signal circuit design. It is not only an excellent textbook for senior or graduate student to learn mixed-signal circuit design but also a "must have" reference book for circuit designers doing analog/mixed-signal design. The book presents not only the therectical background for data converter using SPICE modeling approach, but also the practical considerations for implementing data converters at the circuit level. The materials it covers about submicron CMOS circuit design has provided reader with necessary background and techniques (which are very practical) for transistor level design like no other analog textbook you can find.
An excellent text for learning and for reference!.......2002-08-01
The book begins by covering basic data converter theory and includes methods for SPICE modeling of data converters. An important aspect to this coverage is that the metrics for evaluating data converters are explained clearly (this makes the book a great reference when wading through some of the spec sheets or journal articles covering data converters).
After the fundamentals of data converters are established, the text covers noise-shaping converters (including a review of some of the digital filtering concepts required to understand/implement these devices). This is one of the hottest topics in solid-state circuit design today, with journal articles appearing monthly on new topologies and uses for sigma-delta data converters. Very few textbooks are available that cover this topic, and it is great to have a book that teaches the noise-shaping concepts in such a straightforward manner.
There are a few chapters that cover implementation of data converters, including a very useful chapter on submicron CMOS circuit design. Rather than simply focus on the academic and `ideal' implementations of circuitry, this text takes a practical approach and recognizes that the real world is not perfect. This approach is seen throughout the text and gives a deeper appreciation for the specifications used to characterize converter performance, as well as the limitations with various circuit topologies.
In addition to data converters, there is a chapter on integrator-based CMOS filters (this is very applicable in today's mixed-signal CMOS designs), including filters that use the noise-shaping concepts discussed earlier.
Very few technical textbooks are as well thought as this one. From start to finish, the text is filled with practical examples that aid in the learning process. There are SPICE examples throughout the book, and the netlists will all run using WinSPICE (all netlists and WinSPICE are available for download ...). It is great to be able to play with these netlists and get a feel for how the circuits operate.
The final chapter in the book takes the concepts taught and shows real implementations of several circuits (on a breadboard and with hand-soldered circuits), including a noise-shaping modulator and a discrete analog integrator. The author proves that the concepts work with these implementations and discusses proper laboratory measurement and characterization techniques.
This book is a great teaching tool as a classroom text or as a self-study reference. The problems at the end of each chapter and the prototypes at the end of the book allow the reader to verify understanding, whether on paper or in the laboratory.

Book Description
After years of anticipation, respected authors Phil Allen and Doug Holberg bring you the second edition of their popular textbook, CMOS Analog Circuit Design. From the forefront of CMOS technology, Phil and Doug have combined their expertise as engineers and academics to present a cutting-edge and effective overview of the principles and techniques for designing circuits. Their two main goals are: DT to mix the academic and practical viewpoints in a treatment that is neither superficial nor overly detailed and DT to teach analog integrated circuit design with a hierarchically organized approach. Most of the techniques and principles presented in the second edition have been taught over the last ten years to industry members. Their needs and questions have greatly shaped the revision process, making this new edition a valuable resource for practicing engineers. The trademark approach of Phil and Doug's textbook is its design recipes, which take readers step-by-step through the creation of real circuits, explaining complex design problems. The book provides detailed coverage of often-neglected areas and deliberately leaves out bipolar analog circuits, since CMOS is the dominant technology for analog integrated circuit design. Appropriate for advanced undergraduates and graduate students with background knowledge in basic electronics including biasing, modeling, circuit analysis, and frequency response, CMOS Analog Circuit Design, Second Edition, presents a complete picture of design (including modeling, simulation, and testing) and enables readers to design an analog circuit that can be implemented by CMOS technology. Features DT Orients the experience of the expert within the perspective of design methodology DT Identifies common mistakes made by beginning designers DT Provides problems with each chapter that reinforce and develop student understanding DT Contains numerous problems that can be used as homework, quiz, or exam problems DT Includes a new section on switched-capacitor circuits DT Includes helpful appendices that provide simulation techniques and the following supplemental material: A brief review of circuit analysis for CMOS analog design A calculator program for analyzing CMOS circuits A summary of time-frequency domain relationships for second-order systems
Customer Reviews:
It is a good book.......2006-11-12
It could be a very good introductory book for the subject. It has plenty of examples and end of chapter problems. It has a lot of graphs, diagrams...etc. I think it is better than the Behzad book, at least as an introductory book on the topic. It is well written in an easy to read style, similar to Sedra and Smith. It is a good one. One thing I do not like about it, is its treatment of SPICE. It deals with SPICE as if it is the same old text based program. I would have liked it better if it had dealt with it in a graphical way.
Essential for Circuit Designers.......2006-01-22
Dr. Allen estalished methodological analysis and design principles of CMOS analog circuits, especially in op amps and filters. As the author's publicity tells, this book (and 1st edition) turned a magic of analog circuits and systems to straight forward design flow. As an analog and mixed signal designer, this book is always within my reach on the desk.
Very Good Analog IC Design Textbook but not Gray and Meyer.......2005-11-17
Allen & Holberg is a book you should add to your library if you are a mixed signal designer or applications engineer. It is particularly strong in switched capacitor circuits (ch 9) and A/D and D/A conversion circuits (ch 10). It is weak on high speed analog design, and weak in developing the intuition needed for analog design, something Gray and Meyer spends time on. I feel that the text reads much better than Razavi. go to www.aicdesign.org for the book errata.
excellent book.......2005-09-21
It is an excellent reference book for the Cmos designers and wannabes, it is a very easy follow through and has very detailed examples, very good.
Must Have.......2002-06-02
A must have book for any serious analog / mixed signal IC designer. Very detailed and hands-on approach to design tradeoffs. The book was THE Reference for an Austin-based IC company which is already making its 18th year.

VLSI Memory Chip Design (Springer Series in Advanced Microelectronics) (Springer Series in Advanced Microelectronics)
ASIN: 0792379500 |
Book Description
CMOS Memory Circuits is a systematic and comprehensive reference work designed to aid in the understanding of CMOS memory circuits, architectures, and design techniques.
CMOS technology is the dominant fabrication method and almost the exclusive choice for semiconductor memory designers.
Both the quantity and the variety of complementary-metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) memories are staggering. CMOS memories are traded as mass-products worldwide and are diversified to satisfy nearly all practical requirements in operational speed, power, size, and environmental tolerance. Without the outstanding speed, power, and packing density characteristics of CMOS memories, neither personal computing, nor space exploration, nor superior defense systems, nor many other feats of human ingenuity could be accomplished. Electronic systems need continuous improvements in speed performance, power consumption, packing density, size, weight, and costs. These needs continue to spur the rapid advancement of CMOS memory processing and circuit technologies.
CMOS Memory Circuits is essential for those who intend to (1) understand, (2) apply, (3) design and (4) develop CMOS memories.

useful topics but poor explanations.......2007-03-29
This book covers many important concepts in memory circuit design. However it is poorly written and edited which makes it difficult to read. Hence this book is only for the patient reader!
An errata should come with it or be online.......2002-05-02
This book is the first book dealing with cmos memories comprehensively as we can see from its preface. That's it.
But,in my opinion,it is also the only book i v read that has the highest error ratings.

Book Description
Voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs) with low phase noise are the most critical building block in high performance phase-locked loops (PLL).
Design of High-Performance CMOS Voltage-Controlled Oscillators presents a phase noise modeling framework for CMOS ring oscillators. The analysis considers both linear and nonlinear operation. It indicates that fast rail-to-rail switching has to be achieved to minimize phase noise. Additionally, in conventional design the flicker noise in the bias circuit can potentially dominate the phase noise at low offset frequencies. Therefore, for narrow bandwidth PLLs, noise up conversion for the bias circuits should be minimized. We define the effective Q factor (Qeff) for ring oscillators and predict its increase for CMOS processes with smaller feature sizes. Our phase noise analysis is validated via simulation and measurement results.
The digital switching noise coupled through the power supply and substrate is usually the dominant source of clock jitter. Improving the supply and substrate noise immunity of a PLL is a challenging job in hostile environments such as a microprocessor chip where millions of digital gates are present.
Design of High-Performance CMOS Voltage-Controlled Oscillators noise, analyzes the impact of the supply and substrate noise on the oscillator phase noise, and suggests techniques for reducing the jitter due to the supply and substrate noise.
The primary audience for Design of High-Performance CMOS Voltage-Controlled Oscillators is research workers and design engineers who concentrate on high performance communication circuits. This work will also be of interest to analog circuit designers.

great book.......2005-04-21
One of the best books I read lately... Finished it in one night... couldn't drop it off my hands.
Step on the author's feet, and take a walk through their experiences... Theory... design... sim... measurement... and their interaction... I've got a PhD on PLLs, I still had to say "wow" when I was reading this very well written book.
Highly recommend it ;o)
