This book covers most of the elements you will ever need or want to know about image processing. It presents the algorithms, mathematics, and logic behind all major techniques. It has enough math to scare off any casual reader, in enough detail to satisfy anyone seriously interested in image processing. The only bad thing about the book is the cost. If it were priced slashed to $60 or less, I'd have given it 5 stars. If you plan on doing any serious image processing in your career, it is worth the money. If you only need it for a class and not your career, then you are probably better off reading it with a formerly-wealthy classmate.

I used Ken Castleman's first edition in 1979 that same year to get a thorough and fast mastery of digital image processing. The book is highly recommended, because I feel that if a book is easy to read and gets the job done of educating the reader as quickly as possible, and it is actually a pleasure to go through, then it is a winner. This book is one of the rare technical books I can recommend this way. The price tag of 105 is hefty, but many books today are outlandishly priced. Even so, if the budget allows only one or two Digital Imaging texts, this would be one I would definitely pick.

This book helped me gain the basic knowledge in digital image processing. Although it doesn't have any sample programming code, the description and the math functions in the book are good enough for me to understand the different imaging processing techniques and finish my image processing programming projects at work.

This is the best textbook I ever had, and I sold it for some ($$$) at the end of a semester to buy a bus ticket. Very mad; I miss the book, but it's so expensive. It's amazing the way the author incorporates all sorts of literary allusions in this physics book, such as offering an interesting hypothesis on the optical illusion of the egyptians getting swallowed by the red sea while chasing the jews. Every chapter, light becomes a metaphor for so many things, the way we see, the obstacles, etc.

I first discovered this book when I asked a physics professor down the hall for an explanation of diffraction and refraction in relation to some daytime sky phenomenon. He handed me Seeing the Light, and before long I coveted the volume. The authors dress down optical physics into explanations that anyone with a rudimentary knowledge of physics can understand, relating optical phenomenon to everyday events and objects. The diagrams and photos help clarify the explanation. And practical, hands-on suggested activities help drive the point home. This book would be great for physics teachers -- or teachers at any level. How about pinhole cameras or illusion drawings for class projects?

    5 out of 5 stars An unusually clear book -- and great for OCR researchers........2006-05-07

    This nifty book is unusual in several respects: it is written in an extremely clear and simple style; it presents good clear code, both in print and on the accompanying CD; and it presents a variety of different methods for achieving each given goal. For example, the book presents a half-dozen different algorithms (usually with code) for edge-detection, for thresholding, and for skeletonization. For the most part, the book does a good job of explaining the relative merits or suitabilities of the different algorithms.

    It's important to say, though, that this book is not a comprehensive introduction to image processing issues and algorithms (such as Gonzales&Woods), nor is it a soup-to-nuts cookbook of code (such as Myler&Weeks' admittedly dated "Pocket Handbook"). Although the book is written in a style that students could understand, I wouldn't recommend it as a first book for novice students. It would be better suited to a non-specialist who nevertheless needs to accomplish something specific -- like thresholding or edge-detection -- in short order, and with an algorithm that's tuned to their particular application.

    One last thing: this book will be VERY MUCH appreciated by anyone seeking a foundation in optical character recognition.

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding source of implementations of image processing algorithms.......2006-03-11

    This book is a great source of code for the implementations of common and not so common algorithms used in image processing and computer vision. It is not meant to be a textbook on either subject. For that I suggest you turn to "Digital Image Processing" by Gonzalez and Woods for the subject of image processing and to "Computer Vision" by Linda Shapiro for computer vision.
    The book starts out with the treatment of a common subject - edge detection - and provides code for various edge detectors including Canny, Shen-Casten, and Marr-Hildreth.
    Chapter 2 does a pretty good job of explaining digital morphology, the various operations, and their uses.
    Chapter 3 has a very brief introduction to gray-level segmentation, and then jumps into more advanced topics such as the method of iterative selection, entropy, fuzzy logic methods, and the method of Chow and Kaneko, among others. Most of the methods here are somewhat mathematically involved, and the author does a pretty good job of explaining the mathematics and showing resulting images that show the strengths of each method.
    Chapter 4 is about the calculation and use of texture in image processing and computer vision. Again, the mathematics here can get involved and equations and illustrations are included to help make the concepts clear. Even fractal geometry and its use in texture is very briefly mentioned.
    Chapter 5 is one of my favorites, since it covers the topic of skeletonization, which is not commonly covered in most vision or image processing books. The most common method is mentioned first - that of the medial axis transform. This is followed by a discussion of iterative morphological methods and also the use of contours. Finally, the chapter is rounded out with an explanation of the Zhang-Suen/Stentiford/Holt combined method and accompanying code. This method usually produces the best combination of good visual results and computational efficiency.
    In Chapter 6, on image restoration, the author moves to the frequency domain and discusses the Fourier Transform, the FFT, and their uses in image restoration. The author provides his own image restoration system, the Eagle Restoration System, complete with code.
    Chapter 7, on wavelets, is a very brief and not too satisfying introduction to the topic. The author does provide some mathematics and some code for some basic transforms, but does not provide much in the way of motivation.
    Chapters 8 and 9, on optical character recognition and symbol recognition respectively, are two very good chapters on this subject. It provides the simple introductory information on recognizing printed alphabetic characters. It also talks about skew detection in the case of slanted lines of text. Chapter 9 expands the concepts with a very good section on neural networks and character recognition concluding with a system that recognizes printed music.
    Chapter 10, the final chapter of the book, was an OK introduction to genetic algorithms and evolutionary computing. However, like the chapter on wavelets, I found it a bit thin.
    The appendix contains a listing of all of the C code included on the CD and each program's purpose. Going through the individual programs was, for me, almost as educational as reading the book, since the code is very well laid out and commented. I highly recommend this book to individuals looking for implementations and discussions of certain image processing and computer vision algorithms.

    Recomiendo este libro a todos aquellos que estén trabajando en procesamiento digital de imágenes. Requiere conocimiento previo dado que el análisis matemático asociado no está descrito con suficiente profundidad en todos los temas, sin embargo describe muy bien las técnicas y alcances de las las diferentes teorías relacionadas con el procesamiento de señales. El CD que lo acompaña es de gran valor y permite fijar con mucha rapidez los logros descritos en el libro.

    This book is very helpfull. Not only for image processing. An unsuspected use that I do to this book was use an algorithm for correct blurred images to revert effect of movil mean that produce a strain gage when one sense an compresion wave traveling throw an iron bar, and work very well. This book has an "honor place" in my library.

    Nicholas Wade takes a daring approach in this collection of documents from the history of optical studies. In it, he compiles a curiously structured anthology of writers, from the 5th-century B.C. Greek philosopher Democritus to the 19th-century English musical instrument maker Charles Wheatstone, including such famous students of light and vision as Leonardo da Vinci, Isaac Newton, and Albert Einstein. These thinkers are grouped by theme ("Light and the Eye," for example, or "Space") and by date, but only very loosely by immediate subject, giving the book a hop-around feel.     Book Description

    This illustrated survey covers what Nicholas Wade calls the "observational era of vision," beginning with the Greek philosophers and ending with Wheatstone's description of the stereoscope at the end of the 1830s (after which vision became an experimental science). Although there are other histories of vision, this is the first to present extracts of the works of scholars, organized both topically and chronologically. In what has become the author's signature style, the book juxtaposes verbal and visual descriptions. Many of the over three hundred illustrations are derived from engravings--of portraits of the scholars cited, as well as of scientific diagrams.

    Each portrait appears beside a significant quotation by the scholar, along with the dates of birth and death, and the source of the original illustration. The author's commentary provides the context for the quotations and traces the scientific development within each topic. The book is organized around the principal topics within the investigation of visual phenomena: light, color, subjective visual phenomena (such as afterimages and pattern distortions), motion, binocularity, space, and visual illusions.

    I'm a photographer who thinks about photography and its relationship to human vision. Wade's book is an inspiration for that kind of thinking. What is remarkable about this book is the way it reveals that understanding HOW we see did not come easily to humanity.

    Palmer has written an outstanding book for the technically trained reader, even if that reader has a casual interest in understanding the emergence of of human cognition from the physics of vision, to the function of sight.
    Absent from the book is a cogent presentation of aesthetics of seeing. For that the interested reader should see John Gage's Color and Meaning.

    Stephen Palmer has written a marvelous book. Its well organized and written. It is suitable as a reference & text for those beginning and advancing to higher levels in Vision Science. The pictures, diagrams, graphs, charts, photos, and outlines are well placed and explained in the body of the text. Because Dr. Palmer is first a Neuropsychologist, the approach is more geared toward psychological mechanisms & psychophysics. The emphasis is less on Biological Approaches to Visual Function. This & Chalupa's 2 Volume Set should get novice to intermediate scientists going further in Vision Science!

    As an interested academic in a completely unrelated field (chemistry) Palmer's book was only the second cognitive psychology text that I had ever read. It was an "eye opener." There should be awards given to authors who commit themselves and succeed at the task of what Palmer has done here. The book was comprehensive and didn't pull any punches, but was still very readable. The quality of the writing and organization leads me to assume that the man is a gifted teacher as well. The layout, glossary, index, and organization of the text were clearly constructed with the reader in mind. Five star reviews at Amazon.com should be reserved for books of this quality.

    This is an excellent book! Steve Palmer is perhaps best known for his work on perceptual grouping and perceptual organization. With this text, however, Palmer proves that his interests extend beyond these boundaries into the domain of perception as a whole. Palmer also demonstrates that his interests are not confined by one methodology either. Presenting findings from a number of perspectives is one of the things that excites Palmer the most, and he does it like no other. By making use of relevant research in neuroscience, psychology, computer vision and linguistics, to name a few, Palmer develops a unified text for the emerging domain of "Vision Science", a subfield of the larger interdisciplinary enterprise of Cognitive Science.

    Palmer's book differs from other books on visual perception in three major ways. First, Palmer introduces the major theoretical perspectives to visual perception--inferential, ecological and computational-- early in the text and then places empirical findings throughout the text in the context of these perspectives. Second, Palmer presents findings from a number of disciplines in an integrated fashion. As opposed to having separate sections for neuroscience, computer vision and perceptual development, for example, Palmer presents research from multiple disciplines as it relates to relevant areas of visual perception, such as perceptual organization or object recognition. Third, and perhaps most importantly, Palmer resists the temptation to dichotomize. The discussions of the literature are sophisticated, presenting both the pros and the cons of different approaches to phenomena in perception, even venturing to propose novel theoretical syntheses at various points in the book.

    For anyone who is interested in visual perception, neuroscience, computer vision, or just Cognitive Science in general, this is a book that you must have on your book shelf.

We strongly believe that image and video retrieval need an integrated approach from fields such as image processing, shape processing, perception, database indexing, visualization, and querying, etc.
      This book contains a selection of results that was presented at the Dagstuhl Seminar on Content-Based Image and Video Retrieval, in December 1999. The purpose of this seminar was to bring together people from the various fields, in order to promote information exchange and interaction among researchers who are interested in various aspects of accessing the content of image and video data. The book provides an overview of the state of the art in content-based image and video retrieval. The topics covered by the chapters are integrated system aspects, as well as techniques from image processing, computer vision, multimedia, databases, graphics, signal processing, and information theory.
      The book will be of interest to researchers and professionals in the fields of multimedia, visual information (database) systems, computer vision, and information retrieval.

If you read this book before taking Part I of NBEO, you'll greatly increase your chances of passing. The text essentially summarizes a significant number of concepts NBEO writes questions about. The current literature on this topic deals primarily with the use of motion cues for the purpose of generating SR images. These cues have, it is shown, their advantages and disadvantages.         This is a book that every teacher of photography and serious photographer should read and study and re-read. Although the book contains no photographic examples, there are plenty of examples in famous paintings to support the visual research Dr. Livingtson so clearly writes about. The examples in paintings are easily transferable
        to a number of familiar and famous photographs.
        Ever wonder what Ansel Adams and Edward Weston were so successful with the black-and-white photographs but not with their color photographs? I have, and her book has provided me with insights into this and other photographic practices.

        Margaret Livingstone has produced a book so very useful to visual artists that it may, in its density of ideas, seem definitive rather than evocative. But evocative it is. As we learn from studying it, Livingstone's book offers implications that may be developed by any artist who reads it in almost any direction. One might take as an example the very rich Chapter 8, with its notions of luminance as a balance for the salience, or pushiness of certain colors - how Leonardo handled it, how Ingres handled it, and how today's painter or digital image maker might go even further. The size and shape of the book allow for illustrations that work on the eye at the right scale. And there is an overall visual loudness to the book that is jarring and satisfying.

        The author gets to the structure of our visual systems, makes them very clear, and tells us things that are lasting and verifiable. Her spirit of personal experimentation shows in the book, and makes us think that looking inquisitively at the world will pay off.

        "What is the secret of Mona Lisa's smile?"

        The first two chapters cover some scientific fundamentals- how light and the human vision works. While this is all very scientific, every effort is made to make it understandable, with plenty of full-color diagrams illustrating the concepts. While these 2 chapters are not the easiest to read, they're not rocket science either, and provide a valuable foundation for the rest of the book. Not essential but VERY useful.

        Things start to get interesting toward the end of the 2nd chapter, when we start to understand what a red/green colorblind person sees. But the best stuff starts to come in the third chapter ("Luminance and Night Vision"). Plenty of interesting illustrations are provided in this chapter (like red cherries in a blue bowl, where the cherries appear brighter or darker than the bowl depending on the ambient light, or flickering polkadots), and continues until the rest of a book, making it a truly fascinating read.

        Oh, and the explanation on Mona Lisa's enigmatic smile is very convincing.

        I definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in both visual art and science.
        I also recommend it to anyone who's interested in science and how things work- you'll appreciate some art pieces a lot more after reading this book.

        This volume is very good at covering how the human visual system operates and how that affects the artist and art viewer. It's not too dense with abstruse scientific detail and it contains lots of good examples and demonstrations. The writing style and
        organisation of the book are also clear.

        On the whole, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the visual arts, although the scope of the book is not large.
