Book Description
Now in a new full-color edition, Fundamentals of Photonics, Second Edition is a self-contained and up-to-date introductory-level textbook that thoroughly surveys this rapidly expanding area of engineering and applied physics. Featuring a logical blend of theory and applications, coverage includes detailed accounts of the primary theories of light, including ray optics, wave optics, electromagnetic optics, and photon optics, as well as the interaction of photons and atoms, and semiconductor optics. Presented at increasing levels of complexity, preliminary sections build toward more advanced topics,
such as Fourier optics and holography, guided-wave and fiber optics, semiconductor sources and detectors, electro-optic and acousto-optic devices, nonlinear optical devices, optical interconnects and switches, and optical fiber communications.
Each of the twenty-two chapters of the first edition has been thoroughly updated. The Second Edition also features entirely new chapters on photonic-crystal optics (including multilayer and periodic media, waveguides, holey fibers, and resonators) and ultrafast optics (including femtosecond optical pulses, ultrafast nonlinear optics, and optical solitons). The chapters on optical interconnects and switches and optical fiber communications have been completely rewritten to accommodate current technology.
Each chapter contains summaries, highlighted equations, exercises, problems, and selected reading lists. Examples of real systems are included to emphasize the concepts governing applications of current interest.

Fundamentals of Photonics Review.......2007-09-24
The book arrived in great condition, but I bought it new. This is a great text for Senior students with an EE or Elctro-Optics background. It would also be a great text for first year Master's students. The book tries to do a bit of everything and is a great reference for anyone interested in optics to the professional optical/electrical engineer.
One of the Essential Books of Optics to Own.......2007-07-24
If you are in the field of optics or biomedical optics, there are three to four books which would be the most essential to own. The is one of them. This book is comprehensive, dealing with all the most critical areas in field, yet easy to read. It is either outstanding in understanding the most basic concepts, yet a phenomenal reference on the derivations of relationships whose origin is left to the imagination in most textbooks. This is a must buy.
A very good reference book .......2007-07-12
I found out about this book when I was looking for some materials on Photonics Switching and Computing. These topics and All-Optical Switches and Bistable Optical Switches, Optical Interconnections are covered in Chapter 21
But Chapter 22 containing Fiber-Optic Communication is very brief and for more detail one needs to go look for Kaiser's book.
All in all this book tries to encompass all the components in PHOTONICS and in doing so lacks the depth in some topics. But the good thing is that the references and journal publications are listed at the end of each chapter.
Part of Saleh and Teich's great legacy - a truly classic text.......2007-07-10
If you could only have one general photonics book - this is the one to have. It must have been a 'labor of love' to write - and it is truly outstanding in its comprehensiveness and clarity.
I use it constantly - wouldn't be without it.
2nd Ed looks great, encyclopedic coverage, up-to-date-topics .......2007-04-06
This book is well-illustrated and has very readable, qualitative, and often quantitative descriptions of many topics. It does not go into great detail on many of the advanced or newer topics it mentions. This is an introductory book. Many people learn a topic best by first reading a semi-quantitative account, and then going on to higher-level detailed graduate level books or papers if they find the effort on that topic is warranted. For example, if one see "whispering gallery mode" in some article, and wants to know more, one can find a nice figure and a brief qualitative description in this book. Now, the description in the book is not enough to design anything, but it is adequate for a reader to have some understanding and decide if he or she needs or wants to know more about this topic. Let's give the authors credit for even including such topics - how many books do you have that even mention whispering gallery modes? Similar comments can be made about APDs using thin multiplication regions to lower noise, or the use of strain in semiconductor lasers to improve performance, etc. I think this book is very useful as an undergraduate text or as the first (but not final) book you will want to consult when studying a new topic.

Book Description
Quantum Kinetics in Transport and Optics of Semiconductors deals with the quantum kinetics for transport in low-dimensional microstructures and for ultrashort laser-pulse spectroscopy. The nonequilibrium Green function theory is described and used for the derivation of the quantum kinetic equations. Numerical methods for the solution of the retarded quantum kinetic equations are discussed and results are presented for quantum high-field transport and for mesoscopic transport phenomena. Quantum beats, polarization decay and non-Markovian behaviour are treated for femtosecond spectroscopy on a microscopic basis.

A very useful book on Keldysh techniques.......1999-05-28
I recommend this book to anyone who wants an introduction to nonequilibrium Green function techniques. It is much more readible and up-to-date than Kadanoff and Baym's "Quantum Statistical Mechanics".

One indispensable volume for a thin film maker.......2002-11-02
Almost all knowledges about the manufacturing of an optical thin film are coverd.Especially bibliograpy is substantial.Although most required things have gathered, they are good.About the theoretical portion of the characteristic of a thin film, explanation is by for beginners a little.Although there is nothing, since there are some which explained it mostly, they do not become a problem.
As the 2nd book,it is indispensable to those who are going to study the optical thin film.
In a thin film maker's bookshelf,It is one volume which should be equipped with and placed.

Thin-Film Deposition: Principles and Practice
ASIN: 0750306882 |
Book Description
Very common optical coatings are those that give the faint, reflected color to the lenses in cameras, binoculars, and spectacles. The thin metal layer that makes the difference between a mirror and a simple sheet of glass is an optical coating. But, optical coatings are used in many more applications-a particularly important current one being the splitting and combining of optical channels of communication that are directed through a common optical fiber. Most modern optical systems could not function without optical coatings. The telecommunications industry uses various types of coatings, such as antireflection coatings, polarizers, and dichroic coatings, in personal displays, computer monitors, and projection TV systems. Optical coatings are an integral part of semiconductor laser systems, CD and DVD optical systems, and fiber-optic networks. First published in 1969, Thin Film Optical Filters still serves as the major reference and textbook in the field. This third edition provides a unified treatment of the design, manufacture, performance, and application of optical thin films. It includes the mathematics necessary for readers to carry out thin-film calculations and contains extensive reference to the original literature. The coverage of optical filters includes antireflection and high-reflectance coatings. This is a comprehensive introduction to thin-film optical filters written for professionals in industry and those entering the field. It also provides a solid foundation for students in appropriate graduate courses.

Great book.......2006-11-06
I work in a factory located in Brazil, and our business is the manufacturing of optical precision products. This book has been a great help and good evolution in the sense of helping us to develope new techniques to produce our material.
A solid study of light!.......2002-04-12
This book has got it all--practical, insightful, and well-organized. Sadly, it has got just slightly too much of it all, I found it long-winded at times. That being said, still an very good book if you are interested in such effervescent matters as light and how man attempts to control it.

Customer Reviews:
good for the price.......2006-11-18
This book is good for the price (most technical books sell for $100 or more).
It has a clear discussion of radiometric concepts.
It also gives some experiments for radiometric calibration.
Book Description
This Tutorial Text covers a wide range of material, from the basics of laser resonators to advanced topics in laser diode pumping. The subject matter is presented in descriptive terms that are understandable by the technical professional who does not have a strong foundation in fundamental laser optics.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2003-10-26
As a student with a thorough interest in the study of Lasers (with an emphasis on diodes and the light-emission spectra), I found this book incredibly interesting and useful. Richard Scheps has written a book that not only provides ample information and study, but also he writes in a simple (yet not patronizingly so) and understandable language. Bravo Richard Scheps for this terrific addition to my laboratory!

Customer Reviews:
I REALLY want to give a higher rating........2005-11-12
Some explanations in the this book are very clear. However, the reader may often need to refer to the author's previous book -"Reliability and degradation of semiconductor lasers and LEDs".
Book Description
This book is aimed at those readers who already have some knowledge of mathematical methods and have also been introduced to the basic ideas of quantum optics. It should be attractive to students who have already explored one of the more introductory texts such as Loudon's The quantum theory of light (2/e, 1983, OUP) and are seeking to acquire the mathematical skills used in real problems. This book is not primarily about the physics of quantum optics but rather presents the mathematical methods widely used by workers in this field. There is no comparable book which covers either the range or the depth of mathematical techniques.
Customer Reviews:
Review of "Methods in theoretical quantum optics".......2001-10-18
I find this book really excellent. It gives a masterly
written introduction to all the most fundamental mathematical
methods in quantum optics. The concepts are introduced very
carefully, all the passages are explained in full detail, and
the discussion is very thorough throghout the book.
The authors gradually and clearly introduce the main
mathematical objects always relating them to basic
interactions and physical situations.
Special care is dedicated to the discussion of the basic
quantum states, number, thermal, coherent and squeezed.
Atomic coherent states and multimode extensions are discussed
as well. In each instance, simple Hamiltonian models
giving rise to the fundamental quantum states are
introduced and analysed in detail; among others,
I find excellent the detailed analysis devoted to the Jaynes--Cummings model, the beam splitter,
and the squeezing Hamiltonian.
Quite a substantial part of the book is dedicated
to the discussion of the statistical properties of the
electromagnetic field, in particular the
characteristic functions
and their associated quasiprobability distributions.
I believe that this book will be very useful both as
an introductory textbook for graduate and advanced
undergraduate students, as well as a reference book
for professionals working in the field of quantum optics
and basic quantum mechanics.
