Designed as a text for upper-level undergraduate and first-year graduate students, this volume attempts to establish the curriculum for the modern student entering the fledgling field of space physics. The book provides a broad, yet selective, treatment of the subject, covering virtually all aspects of space plasmas in the solar system. There are sections on the sun and solar wind, the magnetized and unmagnetized planets, and the fundamental process of space plasmas including shocks, plasma waves, ULF waves, wave-particle interactions, and auroral processes. In addition to emphasizing analysis, the authors also place importance on underlying phenomenology with extensive attention to observations.

When I'm in the mood for a little exploration of stellar structure or maybe some light magnetohydrodynamics, this is the first thing I grab off the shelf. It's kept me interested and not at all wanting to gouge my eyeballs out for weeks!

This is a very comprehensive book. It is excellent if you are beginer who knows basic electricity and magnetism, but have not dealt with space plasmas.

        I am neither a physicist nor a mathematician and, unfortunatly, cannot understand the majority of the thoughts of this book, but with a background in the art industry, I commend the author on his selection of photos and the illustrations he created for the work and especially for the dedication, devotion and time spent in writing it. It is a pleasure to look through it.

        The atmospheric science is a young science and it is difficult to find rigorous, not only phenomenological, and precise books on it. I find this book a very precise, with a good mathematical description of phenomena, and self consistent books, very useful for physics of the atmosphere. Probably, in my opinion, some initial notion of general fluid mechanics is needed but this book is fundamental for people that want to construct a solid and mathematic bases in atmospheric physics.

        Dutton's great book on atmospheric motion is one of the best science texts ever written. It uniquely combines the difficult
        upper levels of fluid mechanics (to Navier-Stokes) with rule-of-thumb computational guidelines. And best of all it is a tale lovingly told. The man genuinely loves his subject, and just as
        importantly, he loves his students. He never talks down, but he
        explains with exquisite text and scads of diagrams. As one simple example, he shows how to graphically compute the material derivative of a flow, and you see how all the terms of the
        algebraic computation correspond to elements of the graphic description. Page after page is a true delight.

        Yes the real mathematics is all there. Dutton aims the book at upper under-grad and graduate students in meteorlogy or physics.
        I used the book for self-study and for the sheer joy of seeing
        real physics presented so clearly.

        If you just want a review of calculus in a delightful setting or
        perhaps a grand overview of the interplay of several disciplines
        (dynamics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, potential theory, etc.) then you will not be dissapointed with this magnificent
        book.

        A true classic at the level of Feynman.

Based on the approach he developed in his class at Harvard, Jacob introduces students in clear and concise chapters to the fundamentals as well as the latest ideas and findings in the field.

          Jacob's aim is to show students how to use basic principles of physics and chemistry to describe a complex system such as the atmosphere. He also seeks to give students an overview of the current state of research and the work that led to this point. Jacob begins with atmospheric structure, design of simple models, atmospheric transport, and the continuity equation, and continues with geochemical cycles, the greenhouse effect, aerosols, stratospheric ozone, the oxidizing power of the atmosphere, smog, and acid rain. Each chapter concludes with a problem set based on recent scientific literature. This is a novel approach to problem-set writing, and one that successfully introduces students to the prevailing issues.

          This is a major contribution to a growing area of study and will be welcomed enthusiastically by students and teachers alike.

          I took Prof. Jacob's undergraduate class in atmospheric chemistry at Harvard. Not surprisingly, this was the book we used. Overall it is well written and a good introduction to the field, and is relatively inexpensive for a textbook.

          As the other reviewer pointed out, the exercises are very good. Occasionally the book saves critical issues for the exercises which depending on your point of view could be a weakness. Also, some of the chapters are lacking in depth: the book is adopted from his lecture notes and indeed it often reads as a set of notes and is brief and terse in some parts.

          I used Prof. Jacob's pre-press web edition of this book to teach 20+ bachelor's students Atmospheric Chemistry at the University of Copenhagen during the fall of 1999. I have found it difficult to find an appropriate introductory level text for this class, and have usually been borrowing material for the class from four or five other books. The book is well written and a pleasure to read, but the real treat are the problems at the end of each chapter. Jacob has scoured the literature and illustrates important points in each chapter using recent advances in the field. The students and their instructor learned a great deal from the author's insightful choice of topics. The book reflects the author's perspective of the field, and is longer on atmospheric physics and shorter on chemistry than the title implies. I would have liked more information on aerosols, and the students definitely would have liked more introductory material on chemistry. Overall I would recommend this book to professionals interested in learning more about global warming or ozone depletion, and to teachers looking for a good book for bachelors or new graduate students.
