Book Description
Nonlinear optical studies of periodic dielectric structures have blossomed in the past two decades. New fabrication techniques are producing fiber grating and multidimensional photonic crystals in materials where the refractive index can be varied by light pulses and beams. Gap solitons that can propagate at any velocity from zero to the speed of light and spatial solitons that prevent the diffractive spread of light in waveguide arrays are two examples of the new phenomena described in this book. Microstructured optical fibers allow control of the guided mode dispersion for broadband light generation and new soliton phenomena. Many new materials and structures are being developed that will impact new optical devices with applications in optical communications and optical data processing. All the above topics are addressed in detail in this book.

Customer Reviews:
An excellent overview of lasers and basic laser theory!.......2006-04-29
Dieter Meschede's book Optics, Light and Lasers seems to be divided into three main sections: Chapters 1-6 cover optics; Chapters 7-11 cover lasers and their application; and the third section covers "advanced" topics related to optics and lasers. The first two chapters introduce the reader to the characteristics of light through the presentation of ray optics and wave optics. The three subsequent chapters (chapters 3 to 5) discuss the interaction of light with matter. Although Chapter 6 focuses on optics, it sets up a nice transition from optics to lasers by discussing radiation, inversion and optical gain.
Chapters 7-8 provide a concise overview of the different types of lasers and some of their main applications. These two chapters along with Chapter 9 on semiconductor lasers, provide an excellent summary of the current state of the art in lasers and basic laser theory. The next two chapters cover light sensors and spectroscopy.
Chapters 12-13 briefly introduce nonlinear optics; Appendix A tries to give physical meaning to some of the terms mathematical used in optics relationships; and Appendix B scratches the surface of quantum mechanics. One could skip these sections without detracting from the subject matter or straying too far from the text.
Meschede has liberally scattered the text with sections titled "example" and "excursion." The main difference is that "example" typically presents a special case of the phenomenon discussed, while "excursion" shows a practical example utilizing the theory.
These diversions provide an opportunity to better understand the material. However, in some cases, this reviewer did not see the relevance of some of the excursions.
Optics, Light and Lasers has been translated from German, (Optik, Licht und Laser, Tenbner, 1999). Possibly, because of translation, some of the sentences require more than one reading. The Bibliography has a good references, sparingly referenced in the text. These would be more useful if relevant ones were at the end of each chapter, or were categorized by subject.
The book assumes the reader is familiar with electrodynamics, basic quantum mechanics, and multivariable calculus. It provides a good overview of classical optics with relevant examples from recent applications.
Armchair Interviews says: This is an excellent overview of lasers and basic laser theory.

Book Description
This text on contemporary optical systems is intended for optical researchers and engineers, graduate students and optical microscopists in the biological and biomedical sciences. It consists of three parts: The first discusses high-aperture optical systems, which form the backbone of optical microscopes. Here particular attention is paid to optical data storage. The second part is on the use of non-linear optical techniques, including non-linear optical excitation (second and third harmonic generation and two-photon microscopy) and non-linear spectroscopy (CARS). The final part of the book presents miscellaneous techniques that are either novel or well known but finding new applications. An example of the latter is adaptive optics, which is a well-established method, for example, in astronomy. However, its application in eye imaging in combination with high power pulsed lasers, opens a novel approach to eye surgery.

Book Description
Modern Nonlinear Optics serves as an updated, second edition of volume 85 of the series Advances in Chemical Physics. Utilizing the research of world-renowned experts, Modern Nonlinear Optics presents a dialogue between two prevailing schools of thought: one concerned with quantum optics and Abelian electrodynamics, the other with the emerging subject of non-Abelian electrodynamics and unified field theory. The prevailing paradigm–the Maxwell Heaviside theory–is developed in fields such as quantum optics, antenna theory, and holography, but it is also challenged using general relativity, O(3) electrodynamics, superluminal effects, and several other theories. This wide spectrum of opinion is presented so that a consensus can emerge. In addition, Modern Nonlinear Optics surveys developments over the last ten years, including advances in light squeezing, single photon optics, phase conjunction optics, and laser technology. It reviews thousands of papers emerging from both schools of thought and provides the most up-to-date and complete coverage available.

Higher-order Symmetry, Non-Abelian Electrodynamics.......2001-12-12
This impressive, 3-book set offers a large number of chapters, covering a wide array of advances in the physics and chemistry of electrodynamics being made by leading researchers from around the world. Individual chapter authors have been carefully selected to ensure authoritative treatment of each topic. Editors Prigogine and Evans have published widely on many of these topics. Of particular note is the more than 600 papers by Dr. Evans on higher-order symmetry, non-Abelian EM, which are referenced throughout this book set. The application of standard gauge theory of high-energy physics to the development of higher-order symmetry, non-Abelian EM is given as a starting point from which derivative developments are explored further in this outstanding book set. Parallel developments embracing the O(3) and SU(2) gauges are presented, indicating many important commonalities and results. In-depth treatment of potential theory is given, including the concept of fieldless EM based solely on potentials. Of major note is the novel development and derivation of higher-order symmetry, non-Abelian EM from the basic Einstein irreps embraced by the Sachs theory of general relativity (GR). It is shown that EM and gravity are both derivative from a common set of irreps in this Sachs-Evans theory. In theory, it is shown as a further derivative from Sachs-Evans that useable energy is possible to be extracted from the "active vacuum" by way of "non-symmetrical regauging." These, among other noteworthy advances, are intellectually refreshing and stimulating and will, no doubt, engender further research and development of computer-hosted simulations and new experiments, many of which are suggested and described, to provide more convincing proof. Industrial applications are further suggested -- such as Radiatively-induced Fermion Resonance (RFR) showing potential performance enhancements for medical and other applications of imaging techniques. Because of the significance of these wide-ranging advances, this 3-book set is highly recommended to all physics and chemistry researchers in academe and industry alike.
Review of Modern Nonlinear Optics - Myron Evans - Volume 85.......2001-12-11
This is an exciting three parts review which introduces the emerging field of non-Abelian electrodynamics and its role in unifield field theory.
Maxwell-Heaviside theory is extended and developed to reveal many new insights. It is shown how in its accepted form this theory, of a hundred or so years, cannot properly explain simple optical and interferometric effects. Non Abelian electrodynamics, however, successfully describes a series of known phenomena and makes new predictions - such as the possibility of extracting energy from the vacuum and the interdependence of electromagnetic and gravitational forces.
The three volumes are well presented and balanced covering the traditional approach and introducing the new theoretical developments from a number of starting points. It is seen how generally they produce the same overall consistent results (which are mostly embodied in a general theory of Mendel Sachs).
Physical consequences are evaluated and supporting experimental evidence reviewed or referenced where it is available.
Aspects of this reviewed work are already being described as landmarks in scientific development.
Dr Gareth Evans, December, 2001
Book Description
This is the third and final volume of a three volumes book series devoted to photorefractive effects, photorefractive materials and their applications. Since the publication of our first two Springer books on "Photorefractive Materials and Their Applications" (Topics in Applied Physics, Vols 61 and 62) almost 20 years ago a lot of research has been done in this area. New and often unexpected effects have been discovered, theoretical models developed, known effects could be finally explained and novel applications had been proposed. We believe that the field has now reached a high level of maturity, even if research continues in all areas mentioned above and with new discoveries arriving quite regularly.
We therefore have decided to invite some of the top experts in the field to put together the state of the art in their respective fields. This after we had been encouraged to do so for more than ten years by the publisher, due to the fact that the former volumes were out of print since long time.
The first volume is devoted to the description of the basic effects leading to photoinduced refractive index changes in electro-optical materials. In the second volume the status of the most recent developments in the field of photorefractive materials is reviewed and the parameters, which govern the photorefractive nonlinearity are highlighted.
This third volume deals with the applications of the photorefractive effects and of materials. Starting about 35 years ago the attractivity of the photorefractive effect for data storage, for optical metrology, optical signal processing and nonlinear optical applications has been recognized. One of the main reasons for this is the large nonlinearity or refractive index change, which can be induced by low light intensities by using the photoinduced space-charge fields in electro-optical materials. Many new concepts have been demonstrated in the laboratories over all these years. Several of these concepts have been proved useful also in other areas of nonlinear optics. Particularly interesting was the observation of a large energy from pump beams to the signal beam in two- and fourwave mixing experiments. This effects lead to coherent amplification of a waveform covering spatial information and to self-pumped optical phase conjugation with applications in the area of wavefront correction of self-induced optical resonators.
In this third volume a series of applications of photorefractive nonlinear optics and of optical data storage are presented in several chapters.
This and the other two volumes on photorefractive effects, materials and applications have been prepared mainly for researchers in the field, but also for physics, engineering and materials science students. Several chapters contain sufficient introductory material for those not so familiar with the topic to obtain a thorough understanding of the photorefractive effect. We hope that for researchers active in the field these books should provide a useful reference source for their work.
