Book Description
The old saying is wrongwinners do quit, and quitters do win.
Every new project (or job, or hobby, or company) starts out exciting and fun. Then it gets harder and less fun, until it hits a low pointreally hard, and not much fun at all.
And then you find yourself asking if the goal is even worth the hassle. Maybe you're in a Dipa temporary setback that will get better if you keep pushing. But maybe it's really a Cul-de-Sac, which will never get better, no matter how hard you try.
According to bestselling author Seth Godin, what really sets superstars apart from everyone else is the ability to escape dead ends quickly, while staying focused and motivated when it really counts.
Winners quit fast, quit often, and quit without guiltuntil they commit to beating the right Dip for the right reasons. In fact, winners seek out the Dip. They realize that the bigger the barrier, the bigger the reward for getting past it. If you can become number one in your niche, you'll get more than your fair share of profits, glory, and long-term security.
Losers, on the other hand, fall into two basic traps. Either they fail to stick out the Dipthey get to the moment of truth and then give upor they never even find the right Dip to conquer.
Whether you're a graphic designer, a sales rep, an athlete, or an aspiring CEO, this fun little book will help you figure out if you're in a Dip that's worthy of your time, effort, and talents. If you are, The Dip will inspire you to hang tough. If not, it will help you find the courage to quitso you can be number one at something else.
Seth Godin doesn't claim to have all the answers. But he will teach you how to ask the right questions.

Short but useful.......2007-10-02
Sure, you may not need 'the dip'. But when struggling with the decision to stay or quit a job, the simple concept of The Dip can be useful.
And 10$ is not a lot to pay for an idea, simple or short as it may be, that can make you happier.
Godin creates a gem ... again........2007-09-27
I read this book in just over an hour ... and have bought 5 copies already to start making waves of wisdom in my circle.
Godin describes in this gem a situation we all face every day in many part of our life - "the dip" - what it is and why it's so rewarding to get through it.
If you know anyone hitting obstacles in their life right now - and who the heck isn't? - give them the gift of this book. It's short enough that even non-readers will tackle it ... and will thank you profusely for it.
I preferred the book over the audio ... but that's just me.
A waste of time...Stating the Obvious...and not very well at that.......2007-09-27
The book boils down to these obvious principles:
(1) Don't waste time at dead end careers/projects/tasks/etc.
(2) Dedicate yourself to be the best in a worthy endeavor.
(3) If you are not willing sacrifice it all to be the best or do not have the resources to make it as the best, then don't even start because it is a very competitive world and you'll waste your time.
The author spends nearly 3/4 of the book pointing out that to achieve anything worthwhile, one has to slug it out through a long stretch of steady work that seems like a plateau. He also points out that dead-end careers are those that have have reached a plateau. *But he offers no clue as to how to tell the two apart!* Nor does he offer any suggestions on to how to attain the prescience of whether or not you have the right resources/personality/etc for succeeding in the task at hand; he simply waves his hand and says that if you can't make it through, just don't do it from the start. But wait, there is more...after all his lecture about not quiting and dedicating yourself to finishing, at the end of the book he gives the example of best selling author, Michael Crichton who after finishing Harvard Medical School just quit medicine and went on to become an author without any certainty of being good at it. This despite his constant advice of "not switching queues at the check out counter lest you spend all your time in the line up!"
I am feeling generous and am giving this book a 2 because it was short enough to finish on the commute from work. It is a pity that Seth Godin did not listen to his own advice and write the best book on the subject.
Not Worth the Price -- Good for B&N Cafe -- Oops, can I say that on Amazon?.......2007-09-19
I also felt this read more like a very long magazine article or blog entry and felt that Seth Godin avoided the central crucial issue -- HOW to decide whether to push on when you are in a dip and when to decide to quit that activity.
About the only thing I did get was the concept that one should NOT make that decision in the heat of the moment, the analogy used is don't decide whether to continue on in the marathon at mile 20. Decide before you begin what circumstances will cause you to quit if you experience them at mile 20 -- you know like, "If I can't proceed on two feet, but am crawling by mile 20, then I'll quit." or "if I'm having double vision at mile 20, then I'll quit." And be specific, don't say "If I'm really feeling lousy I'll quit at mile 20."
So yes, I got something out of this book -- the idea to decide on an exit strategy upfront. Good advice. But not worth a book, book tour, etc. For my next trip to bookstore, I plan to check out "Free Prize Inside, How to Create a Purple Cow" Or maybe since several reviewers mentionned 4 Hour Work Week, maybe I'll try that.
And to the reviewer who said don't buy it unless you can get it for 1 cent at a garage sale. That's a little harsh. I think I'd go up to 99 cents.
Not just for business..........2007-09-18
This book is a very quick read, so I was pleasantly surprised at how much thought provoking insight and wisdom went into it. Since reading it, I have passed my copy off to two other people, and made both my mother and mother-in-law buy and read it. My mom liked it so much, that she's passing it along to my sister, and my mother-in-law likewise passed it along to one of her daughters.
If you've ever wondered how much effort to put into a project, a career, a relationship or any other endeavor, this book shows you how to examine yourself and see if you are going to get stuck or become a super star.
I suspect that when a project starts getting too difficult and I'm wondering if its worth all the effort, I will pull this book out and give myself a few refresher pointers.
I highly recommend it. Especially as an entrepreneur and freelance artist.

Shorter Workouts.......2007-04-10
Get stronger and increase your range of motion with the techniques in this training manual. You won't need long workouts to see results.
It works! But Mix with other techniques aftre you max out........2007-02-10
I have been using the Static contraction and Max contraction training for about 3-4 years now.
After years of doing long work outs and never getting anywhere. I said "screw it" I am doing less and that's that. And tried this I am now in the bet shape of my life and stronger than ever. Once you get up to really high levels of weight and start to feel it in your joints more I would reccomend back the weight down and then working in a wider range of motion which I have done.
Also wrist wraps are a great Idea when benching every heavy. I have only had very positive experience, my ownly injuries i have every had were doing full range of motion bench presses (before trying this workout)and a slight wrist problem before using straps. If you do this write you will not hurt yourself. Always follow how your body feels first.
But I feel this is one of the best workouts ever and does not leave so exausted that I feel weak after. I feel good after these workout and I get stronger. Now I have increased my range of motion and lightened the weight to work a little different. But I did the basic workout for over 1 year with very good results.
I now life heaver weights than I have ever before. I also am incresing my range of motion now and doing partial reps, but I could have never done that before I used this workout. I do partial range bench and incline bench with 315-400lbs I never could have done this before I started training that way. And to all those who think you need full range, full range hurt my shoulders for years and never let me grow I started growing when I did partials and then static. Not everbody responds the same way but for me this worked as a good base and now I am trying new things.
Once I pressed 5 plates for static, I deciced to back of the weight and increase the range and that is what I am doing now with good success.
Best used as a suppliment to your regular training.......2006-12-13
Readers BEWARE: The methods taught in this book should only be used to suppliment your training - and not to replace it. For years when I train people I tell them to hold the last rep --to contract and really squeeze the hell out of that muscle on the last rep. I drill that concept so much that I often tell others - that the last rep is so important that I could write a whole book about it - So guess what this book is about!! Except that he tells you to use THAT one and only rep in all your work outs--ONE REP WORKOUTS ?? that is crazy! No wonder so many people got injured following this method on it's own! You can't just work out 10 seconds a day putting supper intensenity in one rep and hope to become like Arnold! IN TODAYS LAZY SOCIETY WE NEED TO TRAIN HARD to achieve results. SO with that being said - if you put this book's method at the end of each exercise then you will have awesome potential in you hands - truely powerfull information!
The book is an interesting read -- a real page turner, with a lot of good insight on whats happening with the bodybuilding today as opposed to 50 years ago. You will love his explanitions on how corrupted the muscle magazine industries are,( How you are being brain washed by suppliment compenies) and the whole harsh reality of how unhealthy todays pro bodybuilders are. Check this one out at your local library.
Conceptually Great but the Devil's Flaws are Lurking.......2006-10-05
My partner and I worked the routine religously for over one year. I have great documentation of every rep - how was the form, how many seconds was the hold and a message for the next workout to either increase poundage, time of hold or to hold steady for better form.
And yes, just as they claim, my strength on the static hold began to increase. As I say, it's well documented.
And the 1,000 pound mark finally arrived on the leg press, and 350 pounds on the trapezoid shoulder roll with the barbell...all the other routines had virtually doubled in the weight resistance area...
You'd think I was really building muscle wouldn't you? Well I wasn't.
And here's the flaw: The day I leg pressed the 1000 pounds I heard and felt a tear in my knee. Miniscus(sic)surgery in both knees occurred last week. I'm a mess, but mostly because I had to have rotator cuff surgery on July 6th.
You see what the authors fail to mention to anyone is that despite the muscles ability to statically hold heavier and heavier weights, there ain't nothin' going on to strengthen the tendons and cartilage and other "body parts secondary to the muscle." And they can give way as they did in my case.
In my opinion, we all have a limit to the endurance of those secondary parts that can be overwhelmed by the high weights lifted via static contraction.
I've sacrificed 3 of my 4 major joints to surgery caused by static contraction.
And lastly, when we shifted to regular lifting after dazzling the gym with our "big stacking the weights on show," we were weaklings. My static bench press had been 310# but my bench press was only 165#.
solid static strength builder, but won't increase size.......2006-06-27
I bought the book and tried the program religiously for 3 months. Unfortunately, I want to grow. This program will help you gain strength with static holds. Unfortunately, I'm seeking hypertrophy (size increase) and this method doesn't do it. I maintained the same bodyweight, but am clearly flabbier than before. Stronger with static holds, but not more muscular. Plus, my true full range of motion excercises have decreased. I had hoped this would be a good break between my hypertrophy-specific training cyles. Well, it wasn't. The author claims that strength leads to size. This simply isn't true. Sure, strenght can enable size and one will grow somewhat as they grow stronger, but the two are not significantly correlated. Just look at those powerlifters that lift many more lbs than bodybuilders. They are concerned with strength, not size. He tries to pass what appears to be common sense off as science.
Now, don't get me wrong, this method does work to some degree if you don't follow the silly 6 second rule. You can get the benefits of occlusion by doing a static contraction, but the waste products such as lactic acid need to accumulate for well over 6 seconds to make a difference.
Now, I know that many reviewers of this book say that this program is unconventional and that is why all of the Doubting Thomases dislike it. Well yes, it is unconventional, but that doesn't make it right. If you want static strength, buy this book. It is good for static strength. If you want size, wait for 5 minutes before buying this book and check out other non-conventional, but highly effective methods such as hypertrophy-specific training (HST). The website I like best is hypertrophy-specific.com or there are really good research sites out there. Save the $15 and buy some good protein powder.

Travel-sized NYT crosswords.......2007-09-27
This travel-sized collection features 200 New York Times daily crossword puzzles originally printed in 2003. The puzzles are clustered from Monday to Saturday in increasing order of difficulty as shown by from one to six top hats on the page. There are 50 puzzles from each of Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. There are 30 Thursdays and 10 each of Friday and Saturday.
Clues appear on the left side and 4" x 4" puzzle grids appear on the right side. Answers are provided on the last 50 pages. The book is spiral bound with sturdy cardboard front and back covers. Unfortunately the puzzles herein overlap with about 75% of the 2007 page-a-day calendar content instead of mixing puzzles from several years.
The predominance of easier early week puzzles make this a great gift for a casual or new crossword fan. This will be a fixture in my suitcase for some time and I hope that St. Martin's Griffin will print a second 'Little Black (and White)' collection.
Worth it for the fan.......2007-05-08
This is a quality, well-crafted book. It's too heavy to keep in your bag, but great for your desk. The range of difficulties is great if some days you want a challenge but other days you just want to feel smart. My only complaint is that the paper is such high quality-- thick and glossy-- that it doesn't take ink or pencil the way it could. Overall that really isn't a big deal, and the number and variety of puzzles is great for the price!
Great puzzle selection, great format.......2007-03-01
This is a great choice for those (like me) who are new to the Times crosswords. There are puzzles of every level, Monday-Saturday, and unlike some other Times puzzle books they are organized and labeled by difficulty so you know where you are in the week.
The smaller size is very comfortable, with the puzzle itself always on a right-hand page and clues on the left. That might make it a little tricky for left-handers to get around the spiral binding, but for the rest of us it's very comfortable. I really like the paper quality on this one, too. It's a heavier weight, slightly glossy, true white paper that feels nice to write on.
All said, it's a great way to get started on Times crosswords!
Love the Crosswords, Hate the Paper.......2007-02-28
Ever since watching the fun documentary "Word Play", I've been a huge crossword puzzle devotee. I've purchased several NYT crossword puzzle books and hungrily completed them, enjoying the word play and the perplexing clues. I was so thrilled to discover the new edition "Little Black and White Book". While there are many things that I really like about this edition, it does have some drawbacks.
First, the format of this book is quite nice. It's smaller than most books, which makes carrying around in your coak pocket very doable. The puzzles are organized in order of difficulty, so if you feel like an easier puzzle or a harder puzzle, it's at your fingertips.
What I don't like is the paper that the puzzles are printed on. Now, I'm an ink solver, but I use an erasable pen. Using one of those pens on this shiny paper creates such a huge mess. The ink doesn't erase well at all, but it smears all over the page. The previous reviewer mentions solving these with pencils, so maybe that's the answer.
Overall, any crossword edition by Will Shortz is a winner in my book. I just wished the paper was of a different quality.
Best Little Crossword Book Ever.......2007-01-02
When I got this book for Christmas, I was not only amazed, but stunned. The quality is unsurpassed. The paper quality is such, that if you do the 200 puzzles in pencil (yes I know, a sin to "real" crossword solvers"), you will be able to erase all traces of answers, and do them over and over again.
The hardcover and spiral binding is top quality. I know I will never have problems taking this book with me. It is just the right size for my "bag of holding", I mean purse, or would fit nicely in a briefcase for lunch time sovling at work.
The 200 puzzles are neatly arranged from One to Six Top Hats, based on the Mon - Sat New York Times difficulty. There are enough of each type that I can lope through them easily or if I want a harder challenge I can have that as well.
I can't reccomend this book enough! Thank you Will Shortz for putting together such an amazing book!

Good beginners guide.......2007-09-30
I went to a local wood hobby shop and looked at several carving/whittling books. This one looked good so I bought it on ebay and saved some $s.
I'm a total novice, so this book was perfect. Full of photographs that explain every step. No previous experience necessary. Tip: I've managed to cut myself a few times so I'm wearing gloves until my technique improves. A very relaxing pastime. Highly recommended. If you are wondering which beginners book to buy then buy this.
Good book.......2007-05-31
If you are new to whittling (like me) this was a good book to get started on. Lots of things that you can make right away.
The Little Book of Whittling.......2007-01-04
GREAT book for beginning/intermediate whittler! Got this for my 8-year-old grandson for Christmas along with Smoky Mountain Whittler (knife), and he was thrilled! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Thanks!
Didn't blow my mind.......2007-01-03
Although I can't say the book is bad, it was not what I was expecting.
I was expecting a manual that would allow me to pick up my pocket knife and start working on my first piece :-)
Having said that, the book does give a nice general overview of the subject of whittling.
great for beginners.......2006-08-01
This book has very detailed instructions accompanied by step-by-step photographs. It teaches you how to carve several different things (spoons, forks, knives, stick figures, flowers, and walking sticks among them) from twigs.

Book Description
Sometimes subtle, sometimes striking, the interplay between our lives and our books is the subject of this unique memoir by well-known publishing correspondent and self-described "readaholic" Sara Nelson. From Solzhenitsyn to Laura Zigman, Catherine M. to Captain Underpants, the result is a personal chronicle of insight, wit, and enough infectious enthusiasm to make a passionate reader out of anybody.
Customer Reviews:
Fun and quick........2007-05-14
I had a good time with this book. I think the author says a lot of good things about reading in general. I didn't enjoy every single chapter, but what is great about a book like this, is it is quick, and if you don't enjoy one chapter, you will enjoy another.
Like a long talk with a friend.......2007-04-15
This book is about Sara Nelson's commitment to read a book a week for a year- and then write about it. It's not necessarily a book of "reviews" as much as a review of how the book affected her life that week. It's about memories of her past, hopes and dreams for the future, and events that are currently happening in her life.
I really enjoyed this book. In fact, I couldn't put it down! (Which I didn't expect when I first started reading this book). Like others have said, it expanded my list of books to read. I feel that this book really taught me that I don't HAVE to read a certain way. I can read a book I normally wouldn't, or NOT read a book I normally would. I need to give older books a chance- and not stick so much to the mainstream fiction.
I recommend this book for anyone who needs a break from the "mainstream"; for anyone who needs to step back and re-evaluate how and why they read.
Ain't that the truth!.......2006-07-10
I will admit that I bought this book for the title alone ~~ So Many Books, So Little Time. And that is the truth. I never realized that it was a memoir because when I bought it, I was not going through any nonfiction phase at all. Now that I am, and this book hits home. Finally, there is someone else out there that haven't read McCullough's classic, "John Adams" ~~ which has been on my TBR pile since last summer when I pilfered it from my father's bookcases.
Nelson writes with wit, humor and depth as she tells her goal of reading 52 books a year, one for each week. While she didn't tell the reader much about the books she did read, she did share a lot of funny and entertaining thoughts about different books, the authors, the publishing world and life itself. She writes on how sometimes the book just pick her and how sometimes, she can't even finish a book. She raves about her favorite and she's very polite when she doesn't like something. She shares a lot of insight with the reader and while it wasn't what I expected, it was definitely a good read ~~ a fast read too as I couldn't wait to see what else she would write.
She claims to be a reader that doesn't like to read the top bestseller fiction and even takes books along with her on vacations to impress other people. At least she's honest. Thanks to her, I now have more titles to look for when I go rummaging through garage sales and rummage sales.
It is a fun read ~~ and one that every serious (meaning like her, you have four different books all throughout the house and one in the glove box of your car in case you need something to read ... and even taking four books on a trip so you won't run out of reading material!) reader should read because she/he will find her/himself in those pages. Who hasn't packed a lot of books on vacation, intending to read them only to never open up a page? Who hasn't had insomnia and would turn on the light at 3 a.m., just to read something or even stay up all night just to finish a book? This author could be writing about me! Oh wait. She's writing about herself and that is just as fun to read!
So it's true, not enough time to read all these yummy books out there but hey, this one is a great start for those who need something different to read!
7-9-06
So when is the sequel coming out?.......2006-06-12
I truly enjoyed this personal, interesting, and easily relatable account of a life lived with one's head in a book. Nelson's writing is peaceful and quiet, but compelling, and I enjoyed hearing about the ways in which her reading life intersected with her everyday life. This book doesn't have reviews so much as a flowing commentary on how whatever book she was reading impacted her, made her think, brought up old memories and feelings...
I felt like I was with a friend, for sure.
An enjoyable read.......2006-03-13
This is a fun to read, breezy memoir of Nelson's reading over the course of the year. In the year, we see her obsess over some books, while struggling mightily over others. She talks about how certain books have become beacons in her life, reminding her of times good and bad. Finally, we get to hear someone actually vocalize the obsessive-compulsive way that voracious readers approach books.
I found that Nelson had a very fun way of telling her story. Even though she was a bit intense about this undertaking, her earnestness never went overboard. I thoroughly enjoyed reading her tale, and will look for other books by her in the future.

Customer Reviews:
My daughter's favorite!!.......2007-08-03
My daughter (14 months) loves this video, along with Volume 2. She signs along and I'm amazed how much she picks up without my prompting. She even now sings to the theme song, singing "Baby, Baby" and signing baby as well. I have to agree with the reviewer who wrote their baby crawl/follow Rachel anywhere because my daughter would too!
The great thing about the video is that there are so many signing babies in it. Plus the songs are very catchy! The only down side is that I wish there was more pictures of the actual object along with the babies signing it.
We started watching this 12 month and think it's a great age for it. It might be too fast for babies younger than 12 months.
A Very Useful Book.......2007-01-11
I purchased this book (along with "Everyday Signs") for myself so I could learn enough to teach my six month old twins. This book contains 19 of the most important words for an infant (like milk, more, want, and ball). Now that I know all of these signs, I use them constantly with the babies and know that they will be imitating me very quickly. My three year old also really likes this book because it is very colorful and user-friendly. He is proudly using some of his new signs with the babies - which is such a sweet thing to watch.
Perfect Start.......2006-08-29
I have been looking at other books and videos to start teaching my 14 month old child. Tried others and they just could not hold his attention. The video musical approach both holds his attention and allows him to easily mimick the other children. Then in our reading time, he remember the signs as we read the book. A great combination! After about two weeks, I am noticing him using some of the signs and He definitly responds to sign when I do it. I love having a way to communicate at this early stage in his life.
Great starter book for new beginners.......2006-08-28
The Signing Times series is wonderful! I highly recommend the books and the videos. The pictures are easy to understand and very colorful for your baby to enjoy. My baby just signed his first word ("milk") after about a month of exposure to the books and us signing it with him. Very exciting to see your child communicate with you at an early age.
My kids love these books!.......2006-05-30
These books are the perfect companion for the Signing Time DVDs. My 2-year-old twins love to pick up and read these books. My 2 and 3-year-old nephews also love to read these books. There is the picture, the sign, and the word for the concepts on the DVDs. I have no doubt that these books will help my children as they learn to read words without pictures by them.

Book Description
Young children will learn an important and valuable lesson about sharing through this wonderfully illustrated and fun book written by NFL star Terrell Owens. Little T is a boy who doesn't want to share his new football; he is afraid that his friends might mess it up. When he tries to play by himself, however, he realizes that football isn't any fun alone. Thanks to his mother's good advice, he wins back his friends, and learns the virtue of sharing and the importance of being fair.

Totally Unqualified to Write This Book.......2007-01-23
You must be kidding me! I cannot think of a single person in the universe less qualified to write a book about sharing. Owens puts himself before the team, tears down teammates and coaches, and has created poisonous environments on two teams (49ers and Eagles). He shouts out "I love me some me!" on the sidelines during games. This is not someone who should be held up as an example to our kids.
Wonderful Book.......2007-01-16
Despite the author, this book is wonderful. I am not a big T.O. fan, but this book is very appropriate for young children. My four year old son is a big fan of this book. I would recommend it for anyone!!!!
Too Bad Little T Can't Share on the Field.......2007-01-10
This book was highly entertaining to the adult fans (and anti-fans) of Terrell Owens. Unfortunatley I would more than likely NEVER read this book to a child nor would I recommend it to any young readers. The iambic pentameter is extremely weak with half-rhymes and inconsistent verse structure. Additionally I was extremely bothered at the use of the contraction, "I'mma have to turn y'all down." I understand, "y'all" could be considered regional dialect, however, there is NO excuse for the use of, "I'mma," in place of "I'm going to." Perhaps I'm being a little nit-picky but I thought I should share. Happy reading!
(For the record, I'm definitely looking forward to the next addition to the Little T series).
Great Little Book.......2006-12-07
I was pleasantly suprised by the positive message and illustrations in this book. I definitely think it's a book many kids should read.
T.O. didn't drop the ball on this one.......2006-12-04
This might just be the best thing to have ever come out of Texas.

GREAT RETELLING.......2007-04-12
Fun having the same story brought up to date and a terrific way to show how things change.
Excellent children's book!.......2007-01-06
I thoroughly enjoyed reading "Carmine:A Little More Red"; it is a creative interpretation of a classic. The illustrations are beautiful!! While the vocabulary was too advanced for my 3- and 4-year old children to grasp, the pictures held their attention and I am sure that it will be a treasured book for years to come.
99 red balloons floating in a summer sky.......2006-03-01
Little Red Riding Hood. There is probably more psychological baggage and scintillating undertones associated with this little tale than any other story in the Grimm repertoire. Accordingly, with every year more and more alternate versions and retellings hit the market full force. From James Marshall's classic version to Ed Young's stylized Chinese retelling ("Lon Po Po", in case you're interested), there are more little girls in red hoods out there than you can shake a fist at. "Carmine" is one of the most recent additions to the fold, and it makes for a lovely little read. Bringing together such disparate elements as the alphabet, gradations in color, a heightened sense of tension, and even a recipe at its conclusion, "Carmine" is not the most accessible of Little Red tales out there, but it's certainly one of the most pleasant to thumb through. You're not going to get the straight dope on Little Red with this version, but for the modern kid Sweet's interpretation of the events involving one girl in a hood, one granny, and one wolf makes for a perfectly nice and perfectly new story of its own.
Each plot twist in this book begins with a letter of the alphabet. So the first step in the story comes with the word "Alphabet". Carmine loved going over to her granny's for a little alphabet soup. "Beware". There was a wolf about and Carmine was warned to go straight to granny's and not to dilly-dally. Unfortunately, Carmine is a world class dilly-dallier. There are few dallys she hasn't dillied (or, alternately, dillies she hasn't dallied). Since Carmine is a fan of painting she spots some poppies on her route and decides that granny deserves a picture of them. "It may seem farfetched to think that any painting can be improved by adding a little more red, but Carmine believes it to be true". Unfortunately, the wolf is most certainly about. After a quick conversation with Carmine's terror stricken dog, it heads straight for granny's and catches her unawares. Fortunately for everyone involved, the soup bones by granny's pot strike the carnivore as more enticing than her old creaky ones. Carmine learns her lesson, granny loves her painting, and a fine bowls of alphabet soup are had by all.
The essential conceit of beginning each new thought with a letter of the alphabet is all well and good but there isn't much rhyme or reason to Sweet's choices. All the same, I was a little amazed at how effectively the author cranks up the suspense when the wolf has visited granny and her cry for help has been foreshortened. Adults familiar with the original granny-in-the-belly-of-the-beast versions of this tale will be as relieved as their offspring to learn of her safety. The story itself does, I should add, make the reader think for a moment that the wolf has returned home to its young with its arms full of granny's bones. But however bleak that image, it is quickly remedied by a simple extraction of the old lady from her own closet.
Prior to reading "Carmine", my only other association with Melissa Sweet came with her lovely illustration work done on Catherine Thimmesh's fabulous, "The Sky's the Limit". In that book Sweet conjured up a very satisfying selection of mixed media. "Carmine", similarly, draws upon a variety of different elements. Open the book up and immediately the first thing you see is a collection of color swatches. Each shade of red is spelled out with alphabet soup letters and they have everything from Sienna and Vermillion to Crimson and Magenta. The rest of the book is a combination of cartoon and illustration. Sweet makes continual oblique references to fairy tales and nursery rhymes throughout the story too. For example, the wolf creeps by Little Boy Blue asleep on a haystack and The Three Little Pigs make a brief appearance in a small cartoon panel. What could have come across as haphazard or messy in the hands of another artist merely takes on a rather vibrant and exciting feel under Sweet's direction.
The version of this story that "Carmine" seems the closest to (at least in spirit) would probably be Lisa Campbell Ernst's, "Little Red Riding Hood: A Newfangled Prairie Tale". Both books feature the heroine on a bike on the cover. Both are updated retellings and both end happily for the wolves involved. Both even have recipes for the foods mentioned (muffins in Ernst's, alphabet soup in Sweet's). But while "Carmine" is a far more stylized retelling with a very real sense of tension to it, Ernst's tale makes for a much better readaloud, especially when you take into consideration its homey southern drawl. All the same, "Carmine: A Little More Red" is a lovely modern take on a old story and one that I'm sure many a child (particularly those enamored of the many shades of rouge) will find themselves enjoying.
"Don't dilly dally. Go directly to Granny's.".......2005-10-09
Little Red Riding Hood is reincarnated in this imaginative retelling of a favorite tale, Carmine taught to read by a beloved granny who uses alphabet soup to instruct the child. She started with a spoonful of letters and now Carmine can read a whole bowl. Whenever Granny makes a fresh pot of soup, like today, Carmine is invited for lunch. Before she leaves, Carmine sorts through her clutter for anything she might need on her journey, pencils, paper and paint. Accompanied by her beloved dog, Rufus, Carmine has been known to dilly dally on the way to Granny's house, although she has been warned by her mother that the route is fraught with danger. This time a lurking wolf spots the child, who has stopped to paint a picture for her grandmother, distracted by nature's abundant beauty. Racing ahead... well, you know this story. Luckily for Carmine, her Granny doesn't meet the same fate as the original grandmother, this one hiding in the closet as the hungry wolf gathers an armful of soup bones to take home to his pups. Happily reunited, Carmine, Granny and Rufus sip their soup while admiring Carmine's latest work of art.
The artwork in this book is vivid and imaginative, combined with a layout that introduces new vocabulary words used in context with the illustrations. This artist thinks outside the box, using both visual images and language to inspire young readers, cartoon balloons filled with Carmine and the Wolf's dialog as they confront their situations. Words like pluck, dawdle, mimic and nincompoop add alliterative rhythms, balanced with lively drawings, a bright palette accented with every shade of red: scarlet, carmine and fuscia. A multi-level reading experience, Carmine is a fabulous addition to a child's library, a visual and verbal feast as exuberant as its young heroine. Luan Gaines/ 2005.
Book Description
An appealing set of verses on half-size pages above a clock face with two movable hands is designed to teach toddlers how to tell time. The verses take them through the day, from 6 in the morning when it's time to wake up, until twelve o'clock midnight, when everyone is fast asleep. In between, children meet Farmer Fred, and the farm animals, as well as other friendly creatures who live nearby--a mouse, a porcupine, a pair of squirrels, and others. As preschool children follow the verses and look at the accompanying pictures, they can match the clock's hands with clocks in each charming full-color illustration. Before you know it, they'll understand how to tell the time of day!

Useful, but not durable.......2006-11-08
I work with a child who has autism and we use the book often in our study time together. The rhyming words are helpful to help him remember the different times and activities. However, the hands on the clock are not very durable. At some point, I will have to replace the hands. He is not a destructive child, but he does pull at the hands from time to time.
Big Hand, Little Hand: Learn to Tell Time!.......2006-02-25
I have bought this book over and over again for friends and family. Children need to be at certain developmental stage to understand how to tell time, but that does not mean you can not start early. Even if the concept is too difficult for them, all kids love playing with the big hand and little hand. Like riding a bike one day they can tell the time. The lights go on! It happens in stages, hours first then half hours and then all the complicated inbetween times. Suggest teaching miday and bedtime first anything that is on the hour.
This book is a must buy and is very reasonable pricing.
Happy customer in Washington State US.
Fun learning aid.......2003-09-17
I have used this book to teach how to read a clock to two of my children. They liked being able to reposition the clock hands and the rhyming story.

Inspirational Introduction to Will Durant.......2007-09-09
This was my first introduction to Will Durant and it did not dissapoint. It was a very quick and easy read as well as being both a great historical refresher and a great insight into the mind of this legendary figure. The book includes top ten lists of the greatest thinkers, poets, and peaks of human progress among others. Durant's commentary is very insightful and his selection methodology is well reasoned. This has inspired me to read more of his works and texts from his Top 100 Best Books for Education.
Great CD.....full of wonderful historical info!.......2007-07-03
Will Durant and his wife Ariel devoted over 50 years to the study of history and philosophy; creating 11 sage volumes of "The Story of Civilization."
His dedication and hard work ultimately earned him a Pulitzer Prize in literature, followed by the highest award granted by the United States government to civilians, the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Ford in 1977.
Durant endeavored to make history more than just dates committed to memory and to bring our human heritage richly alive in the men and women who've walked before us and influenced our lives.
Often called THE GENTLE PHILOSOPHER, his words are laced with warmth and humor as he brings these great thinkers to life!
His lists include the best books for an education, the ten greatest thinkers, the ten greatest poets, twelve vital dates in human history, and the ten peaks of human progress.
I have listened to this in the car and have learned that I have many books and authors with which I have yet to acquaint myself!
It's read with wit, warmth, and wisdom.
Highly recommended!
"The most interesting thing in the world is another human being who wonders, suffers and raises the questions that have bothered him to the last day of his life, knowing he will never get the answers."

A place to begin.......2007-03-29
As the Durant himself acknowledges, all lists have their limitations. This is no exception; it isn't perfect and never claims to be. That said, it's an excellent starting point for anyone looking to educate themselves on the history of philosophy and culture. It has an unquestionable bent on western authors, but within that bent, he made his choices based on solid reasoning.
Bottom line: you will have begun to give yourself an invaluable education if you read any of the books or authors that Durant suggests. Therefore, this slim volume is worth more than whatever you're about to pay for it.
For all those who slept in their Western Civilzation courses!.......2007-01-25
Heard THE GREATEST MINDS AND IDEAS OF ALL TIME by
Will Durant, a best-selling historian and philosopher, who devoted his
life to studying human history . . . his efforts earned him a Pulitzer
Prize.
Although I never read anything by Durant, this work gave me
a feel for his writing . . . in addition, it made me realize that though
I have spent many years in both undergraduate and graduate education,
I should now return to many books that I missed along the way if
I want to attain a true liberal arts education.
This book is actually a summation of Durant's work . . . it presents
a series of somewhat brief essays with titles ranging from
"The One Hundred Best Books for an Education" to "The Ten Greatest
Thinkers" and including "The Ten Greatest Poets," "The Ten Peaks
of Human Progress" and "Twelve Vital Dates in Human History."
I particularly liked those dealing with people . . . the ones dealing
with dates and events were less interesting.
Overall, I'd recommend THE GREATEST MINDS AND IDEAS OF
ALL TIME, particularly if you slept in or never took a course in
Western Civilization . . . Durant makes the material come alive,
particularly when he makes such observations as the following:
Confucius was one of the top thinkers. (He then explains why.)
You might as well not lived until you have heard Bach's work.
Balzac is almost as illuminating as life itself.
Miss not a word of Flaubert's MADAM BOVARY.
You will marvel at the delicacies of Anatole France.
Meander through the 1,700 pages of WAR AND PEACE.
Poe is a little bit overrated.
Whitman is our only American giant.
