Book Description
Bring out all your old storage boxes of photos, and open up all the images you've shot that were just "okay." In his latest book,
Matt Kloskowski shows you how to restore old photos and retouch newer ones to make your images go from so-so to great. Matt trains thousands of people each year, showing them exactly how to make their photos (and the people in those photos) look their very best. He won't bog readers down with unnecessary details, but instead will show them, with clear step-by-step instructions, the best techniques in Photoshop Elements to make the best images. Everyone wants their photos to look great, and to be appreciated and noticed by their family and friends. With Matt's newest book, readers will learn the most useful techniques for restoring old photos--from removing dust and mold to repairing scratches and tears--and retouching images of people--including specific sections about working on difficult areas, such as the eyes and mouth.

Good resource!.......2007-08-23
I have been using Photoshop Elements for quite some time and have many of the books printed on the subject. This is not as comprehensive as Barbara Brundage's, Scott Kelby's or Philip Andrews but it is excellent. A really great resource and good for a beginner to intermediate user. There are many ways of doing any job, certainly so with Photoshop, and Matt often uses a different approach; I've gotten a few 'tricks' different than shown by other authors. The instructions are easy to follow and an advantage (at least for me) is he does not rely on an enclosed DVD of his photo. I like to learn on mine! Definitely recommended!
Photoshop Elements 5 Restoration.......2007-07-20
Love this book, it's very detailed with step by step instructions for any lever user to understand and complete the intended task. I Highly Recommend this book for continued learing of this software.
Throw out your other digital retouching books!.......2007-06-18
I've taken online classes, read plenty of books, spent many hours tring to interpret instuctions on portrait retouching. I read Matt's book and was like "oh that's how you do it". The light came on and stayed lit through all his tutorials. Best thing... you don't have to read the whole book to learn Elements. Want to retouch eyes - just go to that portion of the book. No need to have read previous chapters/pages. People who have never used Elements can understand his instructions easily. Matt writes with wit and gets right to the point. I love this book and keep it right next to my key board for reference.
Matt's Best Work Yet..........2007-05-20
I'm a Photoshop User, I don't use Elements, so I was a bit put off given the focus was on Elements and frankly didn't know if anyone could come close to matching the worthiness of Katrin Eismann's seminal works on the same subject. But on the strength of Scott Kelby's (ostensibly Matt's boss at NAPP) recommendation on his blog, I went ahead and ordered a copy.
Suffice to say, I'm glad I did. From beginning to end, this book is SUBSTANTIVE. Matt has wisely decided to adopt Scott's bottom up approach... that is, Matt presents the issue at the beginning of a section and then shows you how to address the problem (so be forewarned, this is NOT an Elements primer) quickly and effectively. And of course, given that Elements is by and large a subset of its big brother, all the techniques described are easily applied in Photoshop.
In the end, Matt has done well enough that he too can sit on the same stage as Ms. Katrin Eismann (if you haven't read any of her stuff, you should, she is just flat brilliant). My copy is soon to be dogeared as I will be attempting to script as many of the techniques as I can... for those that I can't, I'm practicing the technique and then creating a spreadsheet with 2 columns; Problems & Solutions as there are just a TON of solutions in this work.
So, even if you are a Photoshop bigot like me, do yourself a favor and pick up a copy. It is Matt's best work yet.
BY FAR THE BEST FOR A BEGINNER.......2007-03-22
Having used various photo editing programs with little effort, I decided to purchase PhotoShop Elements 5.0. Much to my distress, it has proven to be much more complicated than I had anticipated. Viewing the tutorials, and the help topics supplied with Elements did me little good. I am still unfamiliar with most of the Elements tools, but since I mainly use it for editing my photos, this book has been great! The book takes you step by step through the process of a specific project so that you do not have to learn what all the tools do until you need to use them. I would recommend it for anyone who uses Elements to edit their photographs - even the more advanced users. I wish all the manuals I have bought were written like this!

It's disappointing when a photo of a loved one is marred by "red eye" or the wrong exposure, or when a cherished picture from long ago cracks and fades. Luckily, Katrin Eismann seems to know every trick available in Photoshop for making photographs--film or digital--look just how you want them to, whether that means restoring what has been lost, fixing incorrect exposures, erasing dust and scratches, or even recreating reality. (Who wouldn't want to lose a few wrinkles?) Eismann has the artistic eye to appreciate good photography, the technical savvy to be able to offer numerous solutions to any given problem, and the writing and teaching skills to walk readers clearly through these solutions.
The book assumes readers have a working knowledge of Photoshop. It does not go through the basics or cover complex selections or masking, although it does quickly explain essentials like shortcuts, context-sensitive menus, quick image-navigation tricks, the varieties of layers, and smart file management--all issues that expedite workflow and distinguish regular and power users. The book even outlines what it takes to set up shop as a professional retoucher, discussing equipment, studio arrangement, and working with clients and contracts.
The author strongly advises reading the book from start to finish, and she's structured the projects so that they build upon each other. The book is divided into three sections: correcting tone, exposure, and color; restoration, repairing, and rebuilding; and portrait and glamour retouching. Each page is filled with plenty of before-and-after images, along with screen shots of palettes and dialog boxes.
This book makes tackling each of your photo's flaws look easy--it seems like even the worst photo can be saved. Also, by the end, readers will have an appreciation for those who do retouching for a living--it takes planning, a good eye, consistency, and a lot of organization, or you're just flailing away with adjustment layers. You can get a look at a sample tutorial and chapter on the companion Web site, digitalretouch.org, which also includes all project images and other resources. --Angelynn Grant

Excellent job writing this book........2004-02-08
I'm a novice who wanted to restore a whole bunch of all photos from family that my grandmother had in her atic, so I decided to buy Photohop by recomendation of a friend of mind. I have no previous experience in this field, but this book was everything I needed it.
The author is so detailed and the practices so well prepare that it took me no time to hands of it, and look like a profesional in front of my entire family and friends. I would recommend this book to anyone, experts or novices like me.
A Gift for the Flaw-Plagued Photographer.......2003-11-12
I will admit it. Many of my photos have flaws. Many have not been preserved properly.
They represent memories, however, so I am reluctant to toss them in the trash. Katrin Eisman's book equipped me with the skills to restore them to a state to which I can be proud. This book has helped me take my well-intentioned, yet poorly executed photos, correct the color, contrast and tone. Mold, cracks and torn edges mystically disappear.
The moments I attempted to preserve were precious to me. The beautiful images that result from her easy to find, easy to follow, step-by-step instructions are a gift.
Great book of Photoshop Knowlege.......2003-08-19
I've been thru this book, was not able to put it down. After going throught the tutorials and reading through the chapters I feel very confident that I will be able to really bring poor pictures back to justice. Katrin really knows how to explain the subject along with showing very good examples of work done, this is a must have for anyone wanting to step their feet into photo restoration and retouching, and not just switching a monkey head for a real one. I have actually read through this book twice since I've had it.
Brilliant.......2003-05-06
This is a deep, professional treatment of it's topic. I've seen several nice books on retouching, but none that treat restoration with such skill. Eismann doesn't back away from the really treacherous restoration problems and obviously enjoys tackling and renewing a photo that everyone else considers hopeless. She generously offers up information and techniques that I think a lot of other restorers would jealously guard.
I was recently put in charge of digitally archiving and restoring my family's pictures. Some photos dating from the 1800's were in terrible condition--my main problem was the images had faded to almost nothing. I bought this book because Eismann specifically addresses this problem and my results were fantastic. My family thinks I'm a photoshop magician (I'm not--I consider myself a solid intermediate user who intends on becoming a photoshop magician....) and I am so proud that I was able to preserve something this important to my family.
The other reviews support how terrific this book is but I really wanted to show my appreciation by adding another. With so many expensive photoshop books to wade through, this one rises to the top as essential.
PS--I use photoshop 7. Though this book was printed before photoshop 7 was released, it is still completely relevant. People who think the "healing brush" (wonderful as it is) fixes all ills couldn't have very big restoration problems.
Do Yourself A Favor And Get It.......2003-04-17
This is a fantastic book for photographers who wish to gain greater facility with Photoshop. It is (appropriately enough for a photography book) written in a pellucid style, and it's fun to use and jam-packed with useful tips and information. The author's website provides an additional ton of up-to-the-minute information and advice. The book will pay for itself many times over in the form of materials you didn't waste and frustration you didn't experience.

Digital Restoration from Start to Finish.......2007-08-23
I found the book excellent in its scope of coverage and detailed lessons/projects. Whether you are a professional or amatuer photographer or photo restorer this book should be in your digital editing library. The book is well laid out and takes you from relatively simple to complex restoration challenges. The author includes information on various editing software used in restoration as well as reference to books by other authors in the field. The man knows digital restoration and he has the ability to pass his knowledge on to the reader in an informative, detailed manner.
Book has photos that might be offensive to some.......2007-06-30
While I find this book a generally excellent resource book, I was surprised to find the inclusion of pictures of two women sitting together, one is naked. See pages 62,63,337,338.
Outstanding!.......2007-04-22
As moderator of a photographic web site's discussion forum, I often find myself having to answer questions about scanning and restoring photographs. The nature of a web discussion forum often prevents and in-depth reply to individual questions, and we also find that many of the questions have been asked and answered before, albeit in a slightly different way.
What a relief & pleasure to discover this book - it covers almost all aspects of the scanning and archiving process, with many specific how-tos covering the problems experienced by photo-restorers.
Ctein's vast experience and knowledge are well demonstrated in this readable and practical book, which I'd suggest is a must have for anyone contemplating scanning and restoring a photographic archive.
Pre-requisites are a working knowledge of your image editor and scanner software, and an awareness of the principles of colour management - without these the job is impossible, anyway.
A couple of minor criticisms
- the book is very much photoshop based, and although the book says that other image editors (such as picture window pro) can be used, the photoshop bias may be off-putting for someone trying to use an alternative editor.
- each example photograph crops up in many places throughout the book, making it occasinally difficult to follow, and although there's a chapter specifically devoted to end to nd restorations of the sample photos, some may find that the info related to a specific picture is a little too widely spread.
Overall an excellent book, easy to read and providing real insight and practical methods of photographic restoration and archiving. Essential reading!
for the amateur but profesional at heart.......2007-04-11
excellent book, in you have the basic figured out, this book will take it from there with real life scenarios to fix.
Restoration Review.......2007-04-01
For anyone involved with the digital restoration of photos both old and new, this handbook is an essential resourse. The information regading the corrections done at the scanning stage have already improved my results measurably.
Another book "Photoshop Restoration & Retouching" By Katrin Eismann is well worth investing in also.I purchased this book from Amazon with its sister volume 'Photoshop Masking & Compositing" by the same authour and now feel I have a library of real worth for the work I do. Incidently Ctein recommends Katrin Eismanns books also.
I admire the way both these experts have made their knowledge available.
Professionals are not always so free with secrets and experience which can help newcomers to gain skills. Thank you!
Book Description
Think back to the last time you browsed through your photo collection. You probably didn’t get very far before you thought to yourself, “This picture would have been great if only. . . .” If only the exposure had been better. I only that big plant, sign, or other distracting object wasn’t cluttering up background. If only the print hadn’t been sitting for 30 years in the basement being attacked by mildew, dirt, and paper-munching bugs. In years past, you either had to live with the damaged photos or pay big bucks to have them professionally repaired. Today, thanks to the development of consumer-friendly photo-editing software, you can use your computer to do the job yourself.
Whether you want to fix a 100-year-old family photo or a business shot you took yesterday, Photo Retouching & Restoration For Dummies shows you how. You’ll discover how to:
- Scan and prep photos for editing
- Work with photo-editing software
- Fix the five most common photo flaws
- Get creative with collages and backgrounds
- Print photos or share them on the Internet
Here are just some of the things you can do by following the simple, easy-to-understand instructions provided by the book:
- Bring new life to old, faded photographs
- Adjust colors throughout the picture or in a certain object
- Improve exposure and contrast
- Sharpen focus
- Cover up flaws such as negative scratches, scanner dust, and dirt
- Remove unwanted elements from the scene
- Get rid of red-eye, soften wrinkles, and do other facial retouching
- Replace a busy background with one that compliments the subject
The techniques in the book use screen shots from Photoshop Elements as illustrations, but you can get the same results using Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, PhotoImpact, or most other intermediate or professional-level photo-editing software. To help you get started, the book comes with a CD-ROM featuring tryout versions of all the programs mentioned above, as well as other useful photography software. And to help you get the hang of color correction and other photo restoration techniques, the book includes 16 pages of full-color before-and-after examples. In short, you get just what you need to jump right in and start turning your flawed photos into frame-worthy masterworks!

User from Arkansas.......2002-09-17
I just finished my first photo restoring project and am really impressed with the final result. I just followed the directions step by step and felt that if a klutz like me could do it, anyone should be able to.
I'm anxiously looking forward to doing some more pictures when time allows. As a matter of fact, others have asked me to do some of their personal family photos.
I recommend this book to anyone interested in photo restoring.
Very helpful to me..........2002-09-06
When I pointed to this site to recommend this book to a friend, I was stunned to see a review of 1 star. Even though I definitely consider myself a novice as well, especially in regard to digital photography, I had no problem learning from this book and following the examples.
This book was very helpful in doing what it set out to do - teach photo retouching and restoration. I was very confident in recommending it. Kudos!
Not enough help for a novice.......2002-09-04
I bought this book thinking that it would be a good guide and on first reading it it seem to be just that--however when I started to try out some of the examples on my computer, they didn't work. Steps were omitted and since I am a novice I need every step outlined which is what I expect from a "dummies" book. Very disappointing.

Book Description
Motion-Free Super-Resolution is a compilation of very recent work on various methods of generating super-resolution (SR) images from a set of low-resolution images. The current literature on this topic deals primarily with the use of motion cues for the purpose of generating SR images. These cues have, it is shown, their advantages and disadvantages. In contrast, this book shows that cues other than motion can also be used for the same purpose, and addresses both the merits and demerits of these new techniques.
Motion-Free Super-Resolution supersedes much of the lead author’s previous edited volume, "Super-Resolution Imaging," and includes an up-to-date account of the latest research efforts in this fast-moving field. This sequel also features a style of presentation closer to that of a textbook, with an emphasis on teaching and explanation rather than scholarly presentation.

Book Description
The introduction of high quality digital audio media such as the compact disc and digital audio tape has greatly raised expectations about sound quality in all types of recordings. Combined with a recent upsurge in interest in historical and archive recordings of music, speech and other audio material, the restoration of degraded sources has become an increasingly important field. Containing research previously unpublished in any form, applications of modern signal processing techniques to audio restoration are presented here in a comprehensive and authoritative text. As well as providing a wide coverage of existing methodologies the authors also analyse both current areas of research and future trends. In addition the text is supported by introductory material on digital signal processing. Aimed at researchers in signal processing, at communications industries and at music companies and media libraries wishing to remarket or use archive sound recordings, this is a unique and essential study of audio restoration techniques.
Customer Reviews:
the.......2001-11-08
This book was written by two professors at Cambridge University, who are also founders of the CEDAR Company, which is on the leading edge of audio restoration technology. The book consisely summarizes several of the audio restoration ideas developed by the authors that have been published in various journals. The book focuses on Bayesian analysis as a means for determining the most probable nature of audio defects (clicks, pitch variations and so forth) based on observed, corrupted data. Bayesian inference is also used to find maximum a posteriori characteristics of the underlying, uncorrupted signal.
Those interested in restoring old phonograph and cylinder recordings will find the book very interesting, should one want to understand and develop audio restoration software.
The book is very well-written and typeset, unlike many contemporary technical books. It uses vector and matrix notation for most formulae, which is welcome to those familiar with matlab. There is a very good list of references.
Many of the priniciples discussed require a good knowledge of statistical signal processing by the reader. (Fortunately a new book "Computational Statistics Handbook with Matlab" was just published and should fill some gaps.)
The book comes with an audio CDROM that illustrates several of the techniques discussed in the book. The CD itself is effectively an advertisement for their CEDAR sound processing systems, as the CD has clips with varying levels of processing applied, including the full CEDAR proprietary system. The CD contains the original source material as wav files, so researchers can use them to benchmark their algorithms against the commercial CEDAR system.
I find it disappointing that the authors did not include matlab code to better illustrate their concepts. But then, the authors caution that some of the algorithmic details embodied in their restoration software are not published "for reasons of commercial secrecy."
[As an interesting side-note, one other founder of CEDAR, S. Vaseghi, has published a book on noise reduction and audio restoration. The publisher's advertisement said it came with matlab code. This is not the case. I contacted the publisher and was told (three months later) that the matlab reference was an oversight. Why the secrecy?]
In summary, Digital Audio Restoration is an excellent book by two of the world's leading researchers in this area. I would have given it a five-star rating if it had matlab (or C) reference code. An intrepid researcher could sift through IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing and ICASSP proceedings and glean much of what's in this book; thus matlab examples would have been a welcome addition. Still, there's no better book to my knowledge in the area of audio restoration.

Medical Image Analysis Methods (Electrical Engineering & Applied Signal Processing)
ASIN: 0824758498 |
Book Description
It is essential that differently oriented specialists and students involved in image processing have a firm grasp of the necessary concepts and principles. A single-source reference that can provide this foundation, as well as a thorough explanation of the techniques involved, particularly those found in medical image processing, would be an invaluable resource to have. Medical Image Processing, Reconstruction and Restoration: Concepts and Methods is that resource. It not only explains the general principles and methods of image processing, but also focuses on recent applications specific to medical imaging - providing a theoretical yet clear explanation of underlying generic concepts. The content of this book is divided into three parts: Ø Part I, Images as Multidimensional Signals, provides the introduction to basic image processing theory, explaining it for both analogue and digital image representation. Ø Part II, Imaging Systems as Data Sources, offers an alternative view on imaging modalities, with emphasis placed on analyzing internal signals and (pre)image data that are consequently processed. Ø Part III, Image Processing and Analysis, focuses on such vital image processing topics as tomographic image reconstruction, image fusion, methods of image enhancement, and image restoration techniques. This section also explains concepts of fundamental-level image analysis - detailing local feature analysis, image segmentation, and generalized morphological transforms. It also addresses what is needed within the image processing environment by noting necessary hardware and software and processes for image archiving and communications.

Wonderful book.......2006-04-24
This is a great book! I am very new to using my digital camera and sometimes I find the manual EXTREMELY overwhelming. It was nice to look at this book and understand what some functions are on my camera as well as how to use them. I can't wait to see her next book!
Valubable book even if you don't scrapbook.......2006-03-28
Scrapbooking has become such a popular hobby and a wonderful way to preserve memories. Our best friends surprised us over Christmas by giving us a scrapbook detailing the exploits of my son in his first year of high school football. They know what they are doing but for us novices there are wonderful books like Digital Delights for Scrapbooking. This book provides many wonderful tips on getting the most out of your digital camera to produce stunning pictures for your scrapbooks. Many of the tips are so easy yet work wonders.
For instance to reduce glare and enhance color in your digital pictures you can place polarized sun glasses over your camera's lens to make a huge difference in glare reduction. The book also provides tips on producing perfect 8 X 10 pictures with your camera's resolution setting. Take advantage of your picture software and photo printer by using some of the various print modes like Black & White, antique, and sepia tone printing. Further enhance your pictures by creative use of specialty papers like transparency film, embossed paper, cardstock, pre-printed papers, and even cork.
Whether you are an active scrapbooker or not, you'll find many practical and fun ways to use your camera to produce brilliant and clever prints. A great buy and a valuable resource!
