Book Description
Understanding Molecular Simulation: From Algorithms to Applications explains the physics behind the "recipes" of molecular simulation for materials science. Computer simulators are continuously confronted with questions concerning the choice of a particular technique for a given application. A wide variety of tools exist, so the choice of technique requires a good understanding of the basic principles. More importantly, such understanding may greatly improve the efficiency of a simulation program. The implementation of simulation methods is illustrated in pseudocodes and their practical use in the case studies used in the text.
Since the first edition only five years ago, the simulation world has changed significantly -- current techniques have matured and new ones have appeared. This new edition deals with these new developments; in particular, there are sections on:
· Transition path sampling and diffusive barrier crossing to simulaterare events
· Dissipative particle dynamic as a course-grained simulation technique
· Novel schemes to compute the long-ranged forces
· Hamiltonian and non-Hamiltonian dynamics in the context constant-temperature and constant-pressure molecular dynamics simulations
· Multiple-time step algorithms as an alternative for constraints
· Defects in solids
· The pruned-enriched Rosenbluth sampling, recoil-growth, and concerted rotations for complex molecules
· Parallel tempering for glassy Hamiltonians
Examples are included that highlight current applications and the codes of case studies are available on the World Wide Web. Several new examples have been added since the first edition to illustrate recent applications. Questions are included in this new edition. No prior knowledge of computer simulation is assumed.
Customer Reviews:
great book for MD basics.......2007-05-07
I was especially delighted about the Monte Carlo methods and the free energy calculation techniques.
Old fashioned fortran, strong bias on Monte Carlo.......2006-06-19
There is a very strong bias to MC methods in the book. What they have to say about Molecular Dynamics methods is not really new, most of it is virtually copied from the classic by Allan/Tildesley, and many MD techniques which they consider "advanced" (such as cell list methods, verlet tables, etc.) are shifted to one of the many appendices. They do not talk about ghostparticles for instance or give a detailed account of parallelized algorithms which is really state-of-the art today.
The code examples for download for the exercises, contain subtle errors, are not optimized for performance (which is THE most important thing in simulation business) and worst of all, are written in Fortran. The fact that they publish Fortran code must reflect the fact that at the time they learned how to program a computer there was no C, C++, JAVA, etc. and no object orientation in sight. Nowadays, probably no expert in programming would start a scientific and readable code in fortran. Also their definition of an algorithm is simply technically wrong. The authors are very sloppy here, have obviously no training in theoretical computer science and are obviously no experts for writing optimal code.
Scientifically, as far as physics is concerned, the book is sound, they give good arguments pro and against certain methods, but when you have already worked with Allan/Tildesley or Rappaport for many years you have the eery impression that they simply repeat many arguments from these books or from other research articles (They keep citing Allan/Tildesley a lot) Those things that are not more or less copied from other sources seems to reflect their own experience in this field which seems to be strongly limited to MC methods.
Although this book is sometimes praised I cannot really recommend it. Allan/Tildesley, and in particular the book by Rappaport are superior in stlye and in particluar as code examples are concerned. With Rappaport you get working code right away in proper C (albeit in Fortran-Style C -- again, the reason for this being the fact, that all these authors of Simulation books learned programming probably in the late 70's when Fortran was state-of-the-art). I nevertheless would recommend Rappaports book instead. The authors even offer scientific workshops based on their book (and probably make a lot of money with that). One can only hope that those are better than the coding examples of the exercises. Therefore only 2 stars.
Excellent text for beginners in simulation.......2004-11-20
Its an excellent book for those who are just beginners in MC & MD simulations. everything is very clearly explained with lot of examples and some related unsolved problems. the text explores this topic indetails with advanced chapters in later sections. Good for anybody int hsi field be it in materials science, physics or related fields.
Perfect for New Grad Students.......2002-11-24
This book is how I bootstrapped my way into being a molecular simulationist. Anyone who can program in some language can get started writing simple routines for the basic MD and MC simulations.
I do Monte Carlo simulations at Princeton, and found this book to be the most helpful available for getting my research started. It is my most common reference, and is used extensively in writing background information for various research documents.
However, after you have written your first few codes, you will pass the level of this book and need to move on. I use it less now than I did my first year.
Every student in my group (Panagiotopoulos) has this book I think. And like me, they started with it, but moved on.
A nice disappointment.......2001-08-30
The title of the book is overly ambitious and falls short on its promises. The book is a good introduction to Molecular Mechanics (MM), Molecular Dynamics (MD) and Monte Carlo (MC) methods, with detailed descriptions of the methods used and FORTRAN (pseudo)code, covering from the basics to some middle-level and some advanced algorithms.
But it does NOT cover all the fields of Molecular Modelling, just the three mentioned (MM, MD and MC), there's no coverage of quantum mechanics methods, nor QSAR or other technologies. And, while it described the algorithms, I can't think of it going all the way through up to building applications. For this, Rapaport's makes a better job, and for a general intro to Molecular Modelling, Grant & Richards' Computational Chemistry is more comprehensive (albeit at a more superficial level). Nor does it provide much detail on the methods used in modelling biological macromolecules, an increasing application field for the methods discussed in the book.
All in all, this book fails to satisfy its cover title, it won't introduce to the whole field (just the areas of MM, MD and MC) nor does it go up to application level. But it IS a REAL GOOD introduction to the subjects covered and their basic algorithms,
with sample code, detailed descriptions and plenty of references to specialized articles, texts and resources.

Great Service.......2007-10-08
The book was brand new and the shipping was fast.
Thank you for an easy transaction.
A great text with lots of information in a small package........2007-09-29
This text is perfect for the reader who can read graphs and diagrams. A picture is worth a thousand words and so are graphs and diagrams. This text is chock full of graphs with all the information that you may need for an undergraduate or graduate course. I love this book. Its an excellent reference.
Good book........2007-09-03
Was used for "intermolecular forces" class... Advanced, and I think, it could be useful for people who work with AFM.
Fantastic Book.......2005-07-23
If you want to learn about the title subject, this is a great intro book. And it's probably the most enjoyable theory book you are likely to own, if you purchase it.
Forces you know or not????.......2004-02-13
The above "reviewer" needs to learn the English language! What the hell is that guy trying to tell us? I'm glad the book is useful to the outdoors.
I have not read too far into the book, but it seems to be fairly well written.

Navy SEAL Physical Fitness Guide.......2002-07-22
This is by far the best book of its type I have ever read. I have read or reviewed a variety of books on SEAL training and this one is the best in its explanations of how a person trains to develop those qualities from their body that they want in order to meet their fitness goals. I'm not a SEAL and I am not in the military, but I am impressed with the training that SEAL's go through in order to develop themselves into the elite warriors that they are. This book tells you how to correctly get yourself into excellent shape and tells you how to do it safely. It offers a balance approach to physical fitness development. The book does not offer much in the way of specific exercise programs like other books on SEAL training do. It offered one, but it takes longer than most lay people will have time to do. However, after reading it you should be able to develop your own program. Of course, the book was not written for me, it was written for SEAL's, or SEAL's in training. Exercise programs are part of their jobs, so they have the time to do 2 hours of calisthenics before they run for an hour and after they have been swimming for an hour.
Great book.......2002-07-02
I liked the book, it was a good help designing workouts. I do have to say though, that the swim workouts were a bit corny-this comes from someone who swam NCAA div. I in college. I mean COME ON, nose plugs? Blow bubbles for crying out loud. Other than that brief passage, I was rather impressed. On the other hand, we did get a hearty chuckle over it at the pool, so you could say this book is humorous too.
Distilled Essence of Critical Fitness Knowledge.......2002-05-02
I have read countless fitness guides and have 20 years experience seriously doing fitness related activities, and in all this time, I have never encountered such a masterful summation of the "truly relevant," until now.
This guide offers many useful tips that are based on experience and actual physical need. The effort is centered around the principle that the "form must follow the function"--that is, what you do for fitness must follow what you need fitness for in practice. It is no easy matter to bridge the gap between kinesiological research and applied operator fitness training. This "form follows function" orientation should be very helpful even for those who are not members of naval special forces; fitness efforts must be centered on concrete application. Too often, this commonsense truth is forgotten.
What also I found especially striking was the number of times I read a tip and found that I'd learned by experience that was exactly the case. There truly is a lot bottom line information here, and you won't find any padding or irrelevant material.
In my opinion, this is the best distillation of "the bottom line" as of current fitness research that is available on the market. I heartily commend the MDs who put this guide together, and the operators who shared their experience.
And all for [a good price]!!!!!
A good book but I've read better.......2002-03-29
Recently, I bought this book to learn new information and to add to my collection. I was a little disappointed, though.
While the chapters are easy to read and clearly delimited, I thought they treated each topic relatively superficially.
The chapter on calisthetics was almost spartan in its variery and descriptions. Likewise weith the weight lifting, swimming and running chapters.
It did a good job of describing how the various missions done by SEALS require different physical activities and what training and exercises to do to prepare for them.
It had a brief overview of supplements and the effectiveness but nothing new.
The workout routines were hardly original or impressive. Stew's book is better in that area.
I think this book is geared towards a SEAL in active service with little time for training.
I gave my copy to a student who wants to be a SEAL. I'll stick with Stew Smith and Andrew Flack.
Customer Reviews:
Why this is out of print is beyond my comprehension.......2006-05-31
An exercise program you can do in under 13 minutes, with no equipment at all and decades of research to back it up. Luckily I found my old yellow copy I picked up for .50 somewhere. If you can find a copy (try goodwill stores - it was a very popular book in the 60s. Over 4,000,000 were sold) grab it. To republish this is a no brainer - look at the reviews - who knows why it hasn't happened
New DVD launced.......2004-12-18
For all those wishing they could find a new copy of the book, 2 DVD's of this programme have just launched in UK, called Total Fitness for Men / Women. Can't comment yet on actual results (New Year resolutions coming up though!), but it looks a very sensible, effective, and motivating approach that should shatter anyone's excuse (including mine) of 'I haven't got time'.
There is a real gap here for someone to re-issue the book still, not just for the exercises but to give for example updated info on eating guidelines etc. using the same sensible, uncomplicated approach as for exercising.
It changed my life!.......2002-11-09
I've been following the 5BX exercise plan since 1986, a long time ago. It is virtually free of cost, no frills & very effective. It incorporates practically all the theories in existence regarding increasing pulse rate, balancing aerobics with isometrics, warming up first etc. etc. And who cannot spare 11 minutes a day?
(I'm 45 & have been told that I look 35!)
Well Worth the Money.......2002-07-26
A well written and easy to use guide for physical fitness. At first glance, the plan towards fitness outlined seemed unchallanging. After using the plan for just a few days, I find the fitness plans more challanging than aerobic kick boxing. Content concentrates of muscle toning and flexability, but is well rounded. Charts for progression are great for maintaining motivation. A great addition to exercise routine for active people, and a great way to start out if you are out of shape. All in under 15 min. a day without any equipment!
Great.......2001-10-27
It's one of the greatest physical fitness books of all times. A true gem. Unfortunately, it is out of print. I don't know why.

Customer Reviews:
A disappointing book.......2007-08-31
Overall I was rather disappointed with this book. It wastes several pages on "inspirational" stories, and although it discusses mental aspects such as confidence and goal setting, there isn't particularly anything that you couldn't figure out for yourself. Same with most of the treatment on physical conditioning. Anyone with some background in sports or fitness and halfway decent intelligence could figure out most of if for themselves. It mentions specific fitness requirements for a few elite units, but you could probably get the same info just by going to a recruiter (who would probably have the most up-to-date information anyway). There are a few useful tips on nutrition and survival techniques, as well as a few hand-to-hand combat techniques, but overall I wouldn't rate this book as being worth buying.
Mental, Physical Endurance.......2007-07-24
This book does excellent job of covering overall the subject comprehensively, with good illustrations and does not bog down into detail, or focus to the point of excessive respectivity. Is seems to me a good phy. ed. starter for any age experienced with reading.
Average reading.......2007-03-31
Good for a general idea of special forces training regimen, but doesn't delve deep enough into the actual training. Very little combat training info, good for a general read but definitely not nuts and bolts type stuff I expected.
Elite forges manual of Mental and Physical Endurance.........2007-01-28
This manual is the greatest self improvement and motivational guide for the layman...well worth the price..it will improve your life in ways you can't yet imagine....
The Jedi Training Manual.......2006-12-19
I purchased this book in Australia where it's titled, "The SAS and Elite Forces Manual of...".
I was extrememly impressed with the topic coverage and the depth that the author went into. Mr. Stilwell touches all the bases here... detailed pysical and mental preparation, several exercise regimines, nutrition fundamentals, basics on hand-to-hand combat and ending with a nice intro to "advanced techniques".
Mostly, I was impressed with the section on mental preparation, as this is a crucial area that similar books tend to gloss over, or exclude altogeher.
In this book we have interesting and detailed writing on things like goals, positive attitude and thinking, controlling emotions, meditation, self-esteem, and confidence.
The section on physical preparation is also excellent. Containing sample workout schedules, easy-to-understand illustrations, and just plain good information on exercise.
I'd recommend this book to anyone who is endeavoring to join the military or take on any daunting challenge. Or to anybody who is just interested in improving themselves mind, body and soul.
May the Force be with you.

Customer Reviews:
authentic realism.......2007-07-09
Bravo to Richard for his hard work and dedication to the SEAL/SOF community. I was an instructor in BUDS during the making of Richards book and couldnt have asked for a more genuinely interested person to be around us. Richard has the unique ability of photographing his subjects in the most intimate situations, all while maintaining unshakeable rapport with instructors and students alike. Richard has given a much needed inside look (without going too far) at what these men go through during training. Hats off to Richard for a first class photo journal. BH
Can't say anything bad about this one.......2007-01-10
This book is absolutely great for anyone aspiring to be a Navy SEAL, or if you're just interested in the SEAL community in general. There are over 100 pages of pictures with captions that will immerse you in this mentally and physically demanding course. You'll not only see, but learn the effort, heart, self-motivation, mental/physical strength, and sacrifice men of this caliber will go through to stand among the best. HOOYAH!!!
Excellent book.......2005-09-30
I must admit I am a bit biased. My son was in Buds class 246 which is the subject of the book. It gave me a real life insight into what BUDs is really all about. I had a difficult time finding the book a local books stores and really appreciated the fact that Amazon carried it. Some hard to find dealers wanted as much as $120.00 for a used copy of it.
Nice depicted pictoral of basic BUD/S training.......2005-02-25
This oversized pictorial book describes the training conducted at BUD/S in pretty good detail. In my opinion the photographer, did a fairly decent job with the capture methods used to entail the rigorous training involved in the six month training program.
AWESOME.......2005-01-03
First of all, it's HUGE and BOLD! ... not wimpy on presentation. Very interesting narrative you don't normally see in photographer's projects; you can really follow these soldiers through their intriguing training process and their "becoming".
Book Description
Written by some of the most knowledgeable fitness specialists, medical doctors and physiologists around, this guide covers anything and everything there is about physical training and achieving super results. The Navy SEAL Physical Fitness Guide features over 300 tables and figures.
Customer Reviews:
Great Workout!.......2005-02-11
I was stationed with Mark on the USS Duluth in 1994. I was part of a marine corps unit back then and worked out with him and a fellow shipmate. He got me in the best shape of my life during those 6 months out to sea. Thanks, Mark!
The textbook required for training trainers........2002-12-31
Using Stew Smith's excellent examples in his Navy SEAL Fitness Guide (ISBN 1578260981) as illustrative examples, this book will assist new instructors in teaching comprehensive, total body fitness performance.
While it doesn't serve as a traditional textbook with 500+ pages and an extensive bibliographic stew, it does have uniquely qualified and credentialed authors contributing key chapters throughout, making this a terrific reference guide and course builder for any new instructor or instructor looking for new direction.
I have two criticisms, minor and not enough to reduce the star ratings.
One, there should be at least two more pages of material in the estimation of VO2(max) for trainees. What is written can be figured out, but it can be re-written for clarity, and given two more pages, it can be broken down a little more to see the numbers transform.
Two, the typesetting is terrific for handouts, but the layout breaks across page boundaries in weird places. This is, after all, printed matter bound for publication and distribution to the public as a book. It should be laid out like a training manual with better formatting and page breaks, and given a keyword index at the back of the book.
In all, this is a very helpful guide for PE instructors of all kinds. While its basis is primarily for training SEAL teams, there is wide appeal to any athlete looking for a disciplined, scientific approach to realizing one's full potential.
Intro to exercise physiology + Customization tool.......2002-12-20
This book provides a practical, user-friendly introduction to exercise physiology. The author provides tables and formulas to help the reader calculate how much, how far, and how often to work out. Also included are basic exercise physiology principles to help readers understand the how and the why.
There's a lot of useful general information, though the book also contains specialized stuff not relevant to civilians (like training for extreme combat conditions, or how to customize training for different mission profiles.)
If this had been my first and only SEAL fitness book, I would've been disappointed and bored. But after watching SEAL fitness videos, reading the other books, and trying the PT exercises, merely doing was no longer enough and I wanted to understand more.
In particular, I wanted to go beyond the standard "beginning - intermediate - advanced" classifications. I wanted to find out how to really customize the exercise routines for my own needs. I also wanted to discover how to set personalized goals. Deuster's book provides the answers and the quantitative tools to boot. Combine this book with Deuster's other book on nutrution, and you have a complete customization tool.
My only gripe -- Deuster's suggested PT routines seem too tame. In the interest of preventing injuries, she builds in so much stretching that the exercise tempo gets slowed way down. Other than that, I found this a very useful book.
Very Good Overview.......2002-06-27
First off this book is not a "how to" manual with carefully laid out programs. It does have some suggestions on how to build up running distance but don't expect much more. What you can look forward to is a great basic reference for exercises and related inuries and their treatment. Very basic. If you read it carefully you'll find valuable information and it will point you in the right direction in terms of specialized training (basics of plyometrics, weight training, importance of stretching etc), but you'll need to get some other books on these subjects to fill in the gaps. This is not something for a complete beginner.
If you are new to working out consider Stew Smiths'Maximum Fitness or The Complete Guide to Navy SEAL Fitness, you will not be disappointed, both excellent books. From beginner to advanced you can't go wrong, you will have to adapt the plans in the books to your own level though. In response to those who may say the workouts are too difficult or take too much time; what did you expect from guys who operate at the level of elite athletes and are paid to keep themselves in top condition? Like I said, adapt to your own level and strive to improve!
Actually I bought The Navy Seal Workout by Mark DeLisle way before I ever came across these other books and consider it OK but not great. It's a thin book padded with pictures but DeLisles' pyramiding scheme for chin ups is excellent and it has good upper body workout plans but no lower body(leg)workouts.
After working out for many years I considered myself in good shape in terms of strength and endurance, these books proved how wrong I was.
Book Description
Known as the PJ's and the CCT's, the pararescuemen and combat control technicians are the elite forces of the United States Air Force. PJ's, whose motto is "that others may live", routinely go in harm's way to bring back downed pilots and crewmembers. CCT's, "first to fight", are responsible to enter hostile territory ahead of the rest and establish safe landing sites for arriving forces. Their self-sacrificing efforts are heroic. Their training is intense, exciting, and before this book, little known. Now for the very first time, their powerful training techniques are brought to light in this profusely illustrated and documented presentation. You've heard of the SEALs. . . . now meet their blood brothers! Includes sections on: stretching, weight training, calisthenics, running, swimming, rope climbing, entrance requirements, plus special dramatic coverage of water survival training, from both above and below the water line!
Customer Reviews:
Unbelievable.......2003-12-14
While I have respect for the Air Force SOF community, I found this book to be poor overall. Specifically, it includes heavy use of machines for strength training. How any "elite" unit could utilize weight training machines such as Nautilus or Cybex is beyond me. Machines have little use in a serious strength program and are far inferior to free weights or even calisthenics. Machines remove the critical neurological components of strength such as balance and proprioception. I would have liked to have seen a book totally without machines and just focused on running, swimming, stretching, obstacle courses and calisthenics.
If Air Force SOF units formally utilize machines for their strength training, it makes me lose respect for them. They need to go back to basics.
Great Resource.......2003-09-04
Already A paratrooper in the USArmy I have met many PJs and CCTs. Following my desire to be one (a PJ) I purchased the book and have followed the work out for about 7 weeks so far and the results are more than satisfying.
It is a very simple no nonsense book with deatail of the running and swimming in the PJ/CCT Indoc course. What I really appreciated was the detailed break down of the work out with weights and aerobic strength training. what the book lacks in glitz and glamour it certainly makes up for in content.
The Extreme Workout.......2003-01-04
I bought this book hoping to get information that taught me a little something about PJ's and what they go through to become one. And it full-filled my needs and exceeded my expectations. I am now on my second week of training with their workout plan and I am loving it and experiencing the change. Thanks
About time!.......2001-08-24
It is about time AF Special Forces gets some recognition. While primarily intended for someone planning on entering AF Special Operations and wishes to prepare for the grueling indoctronation course, it offers an excellent regimine for keeping fit. All too often the public assumes that only Army, Marine and SEAL special forces demand a lot physically and the Air Force is "Soft". With a higher wash-out rate and longer, more intensive training required than any other Special Forces group, CCT's and PJ's often get applicants who fail within the first few days as they are not in condition. A great book for the fitness nut.
Excellent place to start..........2000-08-17
During my first year of AFROTC, we worked out to the above mentioned 12 Weeks to BUDS. That was grueling in and of itself. I purchased this book to prepare for field training, and so far it's pretty decent. People have complained "where's the workout" - it says in the book that they compiled the information so you can mix and match a workout that is good for you. And you don't have to be a physical trainer to do this - the sets are there, the combinations of exercises are there - you simply have to do them. Finish this workout COMPLETELY and I guarentee the book will live up to what it says "you will be in the best shape of your life." Oh, and don't forget the running...
Book Description
This easy-to-follow manual teaches a new hands-on healing practice called quantum-touch. Quantum-touch uses special breathing and body-focusing techniques to elevate the body's energy. With a light touch, even novices can see postural corrections as bones gently glide into their correct alignment. The book presents a technique that may truly allow us all to become healers (C. Norman Shealy).

One Minute Hip realignment.......2007-07-31
Richard Gordon writes with such clarity, caring and love, and the drawings and photos are wonderful. This is a superbly helpful book, easy to follow and learn from. After months of seeing a chiropractor with a rotation in my hips, the problem was gone in about two minutes by just following the simple breathing-touch exercise shown in the book for hip alignment. My husband (a "nonbeliever") positioned his hands lightly and breathed energy as I instructed reading from the book, and lo and behold, my hips aligned themselves. No pain, no complicated procedure. Simple and direct, and I am so very thankful! Just that healing alone more than paid for the price of this invaluable book.
This stuff does work.......2007-07-26
I'm just an occasional user of the healing arts. I started out learning w/ Healing Touch from a gifted practitioner who told me about it. When I tried it on my mother, the pains would just radiate into my arms and I'd feel drained after a session. Then I found Quantum Touch and combined therapies. After more than a year later and only several tries, I can now do a session on my mother without the pain or drain associated with it. While watching her vital signs monitor, I saw some normalization in her breathing and heart beat while running energy on her vs. when I stopped running energy.
I also tried the coca cola trick and it does remove the carbonation, but for me, it does take time and concentration. Not bad at all for a newbie who's never done this before.
I only gave it 4 stars because the publication itself had misquoted pages numbers and I had to search for the correct page. Other than that, it's very easy to learn and has made a huge difference when I use it.
Fun stuff. Who knows, maybe I'll make a career out of this.
Almost perefect.......2007-05-19
This book is excellent in covering the basics of Quantum Touch therapy as well as presenting some very valuable tips on how to condcut a healing session properly. These tips are applicable to other healing modalities and not just Quantum Touch. The reason I gave the book four stars is because the exercises lack a more thorough description which makes it somewhat harder to learn on one's own. However, if you are not yet familiar with what Quantum Touch really is and are looking for a solid, down-to-earth, practical and effective healing modality, this is the book to read.
Quantum Touch.......2007-04-05
I stumbled upon this book, it is the teaching book to the course Quantum Touch. It is so easy to read and learn the techniques they are putting forth. If you are interested in hands-on healing this book is a must!
It tells you all about how it works, and case studies. It teaches you very simply how to use the healing energy to help yourself and others.
Helpful information.......2007-03-26
I bought this book along with Energy Medicine and find both very helpful. I work with energy healing and they are both enlightening and useful with my EFT practice.
