Book Description
Ambardar's proven text teaches the basic principles and applications of signals, systems, transforms and filters, using both a visual and mathematical approach. This book helps readers develop a thorough understanding of time-domain and frequency-domain relationships, encouraging them to think clearly in both domains and switch easily from one to the other. Bound into each text is a disk with a set of powerful software routines running under MATLAB® that can be used for reinforcing and visualizing concepts as well as for problem solving and advanced design. The extensively revised and reorganized Second Edition incorporates new practical applications and design-oriented examples in every chapter.
Customer Reviews:
The Best of the DSP Books.......2004-02-02
I've looked at most of the DSP texts and personally find Ambardar's (2nd edition) textbook about the best. It will train you to use DSP as a tool, both in pen and paper analysis and in practice (e.g., using MATLAB). Some books will only make you a philosopher of DSP, this one will help you master the skills so you can actually do DSP.
Somehow Ambardar manages to discuss and provide examples on nearly every topic of interest to DSP with the exception of the very latest (see below). The sections are brief and to the point with many worked examples. The problems at the end of the chapter are actually do-able without having a Ph.D! Graphical approaches and shortcuts enrich the presentation and make the text fun to read.
On the downside, multirate signal processing is briefly explored and wavelets are only mentioned. Perhaps these topics will be enlarged upon in a future edition.
Excellent student oriented text.......2002-10-21
The author walks you through the material one small step at at a time. This text is as close to painless learning as learning wil ever get (if I may be forgiven a colloquilism). You don't need answers in the back because he works several examples for you on every page.
If I ever had to teach this I would use this book.
Mathematically rigorous........2002-03-18
First Review
I used this book for a senior level DSP course.I must say that it is a good DSP book. I understand that some readers might find it intimidating since the book uses a lot of math.If you are looking for a more introductory book, you might want to try DSP First: A Multimedia Approach -- James H. McClellan and then follow up with this book. The sections on Fourier Ananlysis, Analog Filters and Digtal Filters are very good. I can understand why some of the other reviewers have had such a hard time. If you are not the mathematical kind then you would need a some help from your instructor. If the instructor cannot satisfactorily answer your questions then you might find the going to be tough. One other thing about this book is that it fails to make a connection between the math and DSP concepts in some cases. I had the opportunity to take a course taught by the author which made up for any deficiancies. One suggestion is that you must do the lab exercises at the end of the book. You get a great deal of intution and insight into DSP concepts after doing the labs.
Possibly the worst textbook ever.......2001-11-15
The author tries to teach both Analog and Digital signal processing. He really teaches neither. I am using this book in a class where the tests are based on the homework and I can't even check my answers because none are given. The examples are difficult to understand and do not resemble the end of chapter problems. I am currently looking into some kind of reference to help through the class.
Difficult.......2001-11-15
Using this book at work, It is not an easy read if your not familiar with the material

Broad overview of communications topics.......2006-05-24
This is an excellent supplement for upper level undergraduate electrical engineering students enrolled in a communications class, particularly if either "Modern Digital and Analog Communication Systems" by Lathi or "Communication Systems Engineering" by Proakis is being used as the main textbook. This outline follows along with the topics in those books particularly well. The first two chapters go into the basics of signals and systems and discuss linearity, time invariance, impulse response, and the Fourier and Hilbert transforms. The next two chapters discuss the principles of amplitude and frequency modulation. The next four chapters cover the idea of random processes from the standpoint of communication theory. First the concepts of probability and random variables are introduced. Then random processes themselves are outlined. Finally these concepts are applied in chapters on noise in communication and hypothesis testing. I think this section of the outline does a particularly good job of presenting material and worked problems on possibly one of the hardest topics to understand in electrical engineering undergraduate studies. The final two chapters of the outline cover the basics of information theory and error control coding.
The depth of material presented is not sufficient for self-study, but is very good supplemental material. The problems are excellent with many worked out examples, and there are more than enough illustrations and figures to help explain the subject. I highly recommend this outline.
Schaum's Review.......2006-02-26
I have used Schaum's outlines for 40 years and this is no different. Excellent explanations and problem solving.
many topics covered.......2005-03-01
Hsu gives you a wide spread of topics. The book certainly has an impressive coverage. It talks about most types of digital modulation techniques, like Pulse Code Modulation. Plus, there is an explanation of random processes and simple probability. Necessary because of the inherent stochastic nature of much of communications. Which then leads directly into information theory, and the key Shannon concepts of how to find a quantitative measure of information in a channel with a given signal power and noise power.
Understand, though, that the very breadth of the discussion means that Hsu often only has time for a brief venture into each topic. But, then again, the book's title does say "Outline". This is really a review book, rather than a text from which to learn material for the first time.

Customer Reviews:
Very Good.......2004-09-07
I am reviewing the free downloadable version of his book, available at www.analog.com. It is a little more geared towards practicing engineers than students (like me). But to me that's a plus because it gives insight into the practice of DSP hardware engineering, as opposed to a bunch of theory.
Some might find it to be a difficult read like I did, as the authors assume prior knowledge of certain terms (like what the hell is a twiddle factor?). But make no mistake, this is what it will look like once you touch down in that dream DSP job you're lusting after... Except then, you'll have seasoned pros to prod for answers!
Untangling mixed signals.......2003-04-22
This book is based on a set of Seminar Notes that had previously been available only from Analog Devices. It's refreshing to see this new edition, from Newnes, edited by Walt Kester, with its updated information-particularly in the digital signal-processing (DSP) area.
Packed with design information from engineers with years of experience, and backed up by many references, this volume covers the details of both analog and digital signal-processing (DSP), as well as the requisite analog-digital interfacing. Perhaps the best way to review it is to let the chapter headings speak for themselves:
Introduction-about real-world signals and signal processing, with a practical example
Sampled data systems: Discrete time sampling, static transfer functions and dc errors, ac errors in data converters, D/A converter dynamic performance
A/D converters for DSP applications: Successive-approximation, sigma-delta, flash, subranging (pipelined), bit-per-stage
D/A converters for DSP applications: DAC structures, low-distortion architectures, logic, interpolating, sigma-delta, direct digital synthesis (DDS)
Fast Fourier transform (FFT): Discrete Fourier transform (DFT), fast Fourier transform, FFT hardware and benchmarks, DSP requirements for real-time FFT, spectral leakage and windowing
Digital filters: Finite impulse response (FIR), implementations in DSPs, circular buffering, FIR designing, infinite impulse response (IIR), design techniques for IIR, multirate, adaptive
DSP hardware: Microcontrollers, microprocessors, and DSPs; DSP requirements; ADSP-21xx 16-bit fixed-point core; fixed-point vs. floating-point; SHARC DSPs; ADSP-2116x single-instruction, multiple-data (SIMD) core; TigerSHARC, static superscalar; DSP evaluation and CROSSCORE tools
Interfacing to DSPs: Parallel interfacing, reading from memory-mapped peripheral ADCs; writing to memory-mapped DACs; serial interfacing; I/O ports, analog front ends, and codecs; high-speed interfacing; DSP system interface
DSP applications: High performance modems for POTS; RAS modems; ADSL; digital cellular; GSM, SoftFone, Othello; analog cellular base stations; digital base stations; motor control, codecs and DSPs in voiceband and audio; sigma-delta ADC with programmable digital filter; applications summary
Hardware design techniques: Low-voltage interfaces, grounding in mixed-signal systems, digital isolation techniques, power-supply noise reduction and filtering, dealing with high-speed logic.
This is a book by a set of experts and edited by an experienced practitioner--Walt Kester, a Staff Applications Engineer at Analog Devices. He has designed, developed, and given applications support for high-speed ADCs, DACs, sample-hold amplifiers, op amps, and multiplexers--and it shows, as evidenced by his authoritative, practical, down-to-earth approach.

Customer Reviews:
The Book Does Teach the Subject.......2006-05-09
Contrary to the other reviewers claim, this book does teach you the basics of analog and digital communications. Hwei P. Hsu explains the basic fundamental principles better than any text written. I believe strongly that if a person studies from this book, they will have a strong foundation of the subject matter. Also they will see the big picture as oppose to getting lost in details. If one learns the main principles and concepts, and study the worked out examples, they will be able to solve the problems in most texts. Hwei P. Hsu has three excellent books, Signals and Systems, Probabilty and Random Processes, and Analog and Digital Communications.
Truly excellent book for communication engineering students.......2002-09-08
Let me start by saying this book WILL NOT TEACH YOU Analog and Digital communication.
Like most Schaum's books it quickly scans over what you need to know.
That being said, this is truly an amazing book. I have used this book so often that I need to buy it again (newsprint pages).
There are so many example problems on AM/FM/PM, pulse shaping that you just have to understand it.
However the REAL POWER OF THIS BOOK starts at chapter 5. The entire chapter reviews basic Probability and Random Variables and gives around 50 worked out examples.
Chapter 6 is on Random Signals and Noise. Another excellent excellent EXCELLENT chapter. It covers (AUTO)CORRELATION, (AUTO)COVARIANCE, time averages, ensemble averages, Wide and Strict Sense Stationary, Power Spectral Densities from taking the Fourier transform of your autocorrelation function as well as 35 fully worked out problems.
Finally chapter 7 is on Performance in the presence of noise which very nicely wraps up the last 2 chapters with the first 4. AWGN channels with AM/FM/PM systems as well as optimum receivers and there are 32 worked out problems.
Chapter 8 is on information coding and covers everything from source, entropy, channel and error control coding.
In a nutshell this book fills in the blanks of 6 graduate level texts I have on the above subjects.
I highly recommend this book to any communication engineer, but don't forget that Schaum's books do not teach you the material, they simply apply it.
Great for reference.......2001-08-01
The Shaum's series are great for any student to use as additional study aids and for reference. I used this mostly for reference during some other classes as well. (Comunications thoery, Signal proceesing theory, etc) Don't expect it to teach you the topics from scratch, you must be vaguely familiar with the terminology and what to look for.

A good book on Sigma-Delta converters, theory and practise.......2003-04-18
A good book on sigma-delta converters, even though it is a compilation of chapters by different authors. It is obvious that they collaborated, because you really don't get the impression that multiple authors are involved. Theory and practise are discussed to a reasonable depth. Make no mistake though - it would still be difficult to rush off and design a working prototype and expect a spice simulation to agree with theory. The illustrations are good, and the book is well written. I take off a star mainly because it is expensive.
delta sigma modulator.......2000-06-24
it is real good books. easy to understand the sigma modulators and good for people who interested to know the derrivation of the equations.

Need a structure to this book.......2003-04-15
This book is essentially a disjoint collection of articles by a variety of authors. As a result, the book does not appear to have a consistent theme and there is little in the way of background material to each of the chapters. Although the title of this book would suggest it is a circuits book, there is not much here in the way of circuit design.

Low-Power Low-Voltage Sigma-Delta Modulators in Nanometer CMOS (The Springer International Series in Engineering and Computer Science)
ASIN: 1402046790 |
Book Description
SigmaDelta A/D Conversion for Signal Conditioning addresses the application of continuous-time SigmaDelta A/D converters in receivers for a.o. wireless communication. In particular, it focuses on their assets for digitizing such channels.
The book gives an overview of the state-of-the-art in SigmaDelta design and of the challenges for future realizations. It provides an understanding of the fundamental power efficiency of SigmaDelta converters. In addition, it presents an analysis of the power consumption in the decimation filter. Understanding these power/performance trade-offs, it becomes clear that straight-forward digitization of a conditioning channel, i.e. exchanging analog for digital conditioning, comes at a major power penalty.
This book proposes an alternative vision on digitization: because of its inherent immunity to interferers, part of the signal conditioning can be integrated into the continuous-time SigmaDelta A/D converter. This approach results in a major improvement of the power/performance balance of the entire channel. The various aspects of the interferer immunity of the converter are analyzed in much detail and improved SigmaDelta topologies with even higher immunity are presented. Design examples for highly digitized AM/FM and Bluetooth radios serve as an illustration. The examples include detailed circuit diagrams, simulation and test results, as well as an evaluation of the SigmaDelta-based conditioning channel as compared to more conventional solutions.
The book is essential reading for mixed-signal and RF designers who want to familiarize with the basics of SigmaDelta design. For the experienced designer and for the system architect, the book provides an in-depth understanding of the major assets of SigmaDelta converters in digitized receivers.

Book Description
Building on the success of the first edition, this popular text book has now been updated and revised. Covering both analog and digital signal processing techniques in an evenly balanced manner, Professor Baher provides an excellent introductory and comprehensive text emphasising how analog and digital techniques complement each other rather than compete.
Brings the entire area of signal processing within the scope of modern undergraduate curricula
Discusses topics such as spectral analysis of continuous and discrete signals (deterministic and random),
Fourier, Laplace, and z-transforms, analysis of continuous and discrete systems and circuits, design of analog and digital filters, fast Fourier transform algorithms and finite word-length effects in digital processors
Presents a final chapter on advanced signal processing (including linear estimation, adaptive filters, over-sampling sigma-delta converters, and wavelets) to encourage further interest
Contains numerous solved examples throughout and MATLAB(r) exercises at the end of each chapter
Written primarily for undergraduates, Analog Digital Signal Processing will also be an authoritative text for postgraduate students and professional engineers.
