Soil Strength and Slope Stability
ASIN: 0471601853 |
Book Description
The control of groundwater is one of the most common and complicated problems encountered on a construction site. The Second Edition explains the physical laws governing groundwater and soils, and provides practical solutions to construction dewatering problems. New chapters on groundwater computer modeling, dealing with industrial wastes and contaminated water, and operating long-term dewatering systems provide the latest information on these important topics.
Customer Reviews:
Hang on it!.......2000-09-27
Ihave been using this book for about five years without a single complain. The book has not only enough theory to deal with probably the 80 or perhaps 90 percent of the typical day-to-day dewaterning problems that we found in our industry, but it also teach you the ways to cope them.
Its a down to earth, user friedly, easy to read book/manual that every Geotech guy should have. The section "PRACTICE", with chapters like "Choosing a Dewatering Method","Well Point Systems" and "Sumps, Drains, and Open Pumping" has helped me to make that right recommendations on several of my projects.

Book Description
This is an accessbile introduction to the main concepts of hydraulics. Practical Hydraulics does not require a thorough knowledge of engineering, and is ideal for course use and for professionals in the water industry.
Download Description
Practical Hydraulics approaches the subject from basic principles. It is clearly written and includes many illustrations and examples. It will appeal to a wide range of professionals and students needing an introduction to the subject.
Book Description
High resolution upwind and centered methods are today a mature generation of computational techniques applicable to a wide range of engineering and scientific disciplines, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) being the most prominent up to now. This textbook gives a comprehensive, coherent and practical presentation of this class of techniques. The book is designed to provide readers with an understanding of the basic concepts, some of the underlying theory, the ability to critically use the current research papers on the subject, and, above all, with the required information for the practical implementation of the methods. Applications include: compressible, steady, unsteady, reactive, viscous, non-viscous and free surface flows.
Customer Reviews:
Here's hoping for a third edition of this great text!.......2001-06-30
This is the book you want if you need to solve real compressible flow problems. It covers all the basics plus there's tons of advanced materials. I especially like the fact that there are numerous detailed examples and coding templates. In addition, the book contains a very extensive reference, allowing the reader to go back to the orginal papers.
Post Graduate Compressible flow.......2000-12-18
Have to agree with Mark, this book is quite superb. Professor Toro does a superb job - it took me from knowing nothing about shock capture to being able to write my own high resolution code in about six months. Coupled with the Numerica software it is an invaluable tool for learning about compressible flow.
Outstanding text or reference for graduate level CFD!.......1998-12-01
By far the best computational fluid dynamics text I have come across during my thesis research! The author presents modern shock-capturing numerical methods for solving the time-dependent hyperbolic conservation laws in multiple dimensions with exceptional clarity. Most of the text focuses on Godunov methods and is littered with practical applications and discussions for those with a limited background in CFD. In addition, Toro presents a simpler interpretation of his WAF method. In terms of readability, I found this book to be far superior. It will undoubtedly become as indispensible in the CFD field as those by Fletcher, Hirsch and LeVeque!

Book Description
This book elaborates some very important concepts, tools, and methodologies that can be used to help resolve multiple reservoir capacity allocation problems in a consistent, efficient, and cost-effective way. The material presented in the book will guide the hydrological analyst or design engineer in the determination of the optimal storage capacities and operational strategies of the individual elements in a system of reservoirs present at a set of potential dam sites. The specific goal in the type of optimization problem elaborated here will be to help minimize the reservoir capacities and/or shortfalls (which are a surrogate for minimizing costs) and still meet capacity requirements and needs. The ultimate objective in such an application will be to prevent over-design or under-design of reservoir storage capacities under optimum conditions of reservoir operation. Thus, the optimal solution will produce the smallest reservoir storage required to meet all project demands with an acceptable degree of reliability.
Audience: The subject matter of this book will be of interest to practising hydrologists, water resources systems analysts, and civil engineers, as well as to students taking a variety of courses in water resources planning and development.

Electrical Installations in Hazardous Areas
ASIN: 0750663987 |
Book Description
This book provides the reader with an understanding of the hazards involved in using electrical equipment in Potentially Explosive Atmospheres. It is based on the newly adopted international IEC79 Series of Standards that are now harmonizing and replacing older national Standards. Explosion-proof installations can be expensive to design, install and operate. The strategies and techniques described in this book can significantly reduce costs whilst maintaining plant safety. The book explains the associated terminology and its correct use - from Area Classification through to the selection of explosion-protected electrical apparatus, describing how protection is achieved and maintained in line with these international requirements. The IEC standards require that engineering staff and their management are trained effectively and safely in Hazardous Areas, and this book is designed to help fulfill that need. A basic understanding of instrumentation and electrical theory would be of benefit to the reader, but no previous knowledge of hazardous area installation is required.
* An engineer's guide to the hazards and best practice for using electrical equipment in Potentially Explosive Atmospheres.
* Fully in line with the newly adopted international standards, the IEC79 series.
* Clear explanations of terminology and background information make this the most accessible book on this subject.

Partial Differential Equations (Graduate Studies in Mathematics, V. 19) GSM/19 (Graduate Studies in Mathematics)
ASIN: 0898713986 |
Book Description
In this translation of the German edition, the authors provide insight into the numerical simulation of fluid flow. Using a simple numerical method as an expository example, the individual steps of scientific computing are presented: the derivation of the mathematical model; the discretization of the model equations; the development of algorithms; parallelization; and visualization of the computed data. In addition to the treatment of the basic equations for modeling laminar, transient flow of viscous, incompressible fluids - the Navier-Stokes equations - the authors look at the simulation of free surface flows; energy and chemical transport; and turbulence. Readers are enabled to write their own flow simulation program from scratch. The variety of applications is shown in several simulation results, including 92 black-and-white and 18 color illustrations. After reading this book, readers should be able to understand more enhanced algorithms of computational fluid dynamics and apply their new knowledge to other scientific fields.
Customer Reviews:
Good for practical introduction on how to develop your code.......2006-06-03
I found this a very good book in terms of developing your own code.
It is not extremely detailed in terms of all the methods exsisting in computational fluid dynamics, but it gives you those information that for a beginner might be hard to find. Good practical exemples of STAGGERED Grid discretization and a detail explanation on the development of a N-S solver also for FREE SURFACE problems.
Practical things as writing a makefile or how to set your code environment are explained aside of the mathematical analysis of the numerical methods involved.
I highly reccommend this book to those who studies the subject but never put into practice that knowledge.
The practical computations are specifically described for C-programming.
Very good Introductory book.......2005-03-01
This is a very good introductory book to Computational Fluid Dynamics. It teaches you the way to implement your first code in CFD. Using the MAC (March and Cell) method. It has codes in C, but can be adapted to Fortran very easily.
A Good Book With Basic Information.......2000-03-25
This book is very good for those who have background in Mathematics and are beginning to work with Numerical Simulations in Fluid Dynamics. It gives the mathematical introduction to beginners and contains program excerpts that may help in programming.
