5 out of 5 stars Finally a book that explains with words!.......2007-04-20

I don't understand what the other reviewers are talking about, I find this book a lifesaver for my Deformable Solids course, because the authors take the time to explain the formulas they put in the book with real words. I appreciate that the formulas are in the text and not coldly thrown at you in a scary cluster, making the concepts much easier to understand thoroughly.
I found the information easy to find and I think the examples are great, with detailed and explained solutions.
Finally a book that cares about "how" and "why" instead of just "what".

2 out of 5 stars Advanced Strength and Applied Elasticity 4th Edition.......2004-02-12

Many Engineering text books lately do not seem to be written well. I feel that this is not the fault of the authors as much as it is the fault of the editor. This book overall is not in my worst text book list, but can be improved very easily. I have given it a 2 star rating, meaning that it still can be improved upon and until it is improved it is a difficult book to follow.

The problems with this book are:
    1. Example problems are not included in the text in a sequential order. Instead a concept is introduced and five pages later there is an example problem with that material. The example problems should be there to reinforce the theoretical material. When it is so many pages later it is difficult to know what the example is trying to show.

    2. There are too many formulas included in text lines. Formulas should be written in a formula type instead of included within a paragraph. When it is in the paragraph it makes it difficult to follow.

    3. Topic names and definitions of concepts should be highlighted so the reader can easily go from one topic to another with a better understanding of the material.

    4. As I am reading the text I have made my own illustrations for my own study. I therefore believe that the editor, with an understanding of the material, could have been able to include illustrations.

    5. There is a constant reference to formulas written in previous chapters. Just rewrite the formula if it is so important to the understanding of the material. Instead the reader is in a constant state of turning pages. I am glad this book has a good binding.

To the authors: Since I am attending your University, Please do not take my criticism personally. Instead, listen to my fellow students when the review time comes about our course.

4 out of 5 stars Good but not perfect.......2003-05-23

First few chapters are well treated but advanced topics are not covered in detail. For example, beams on elastic foundation chapter is not covered extensively. To conclude, anyone interested in advanced mechanics of materials should own it.

    2 out of 5 stars Not Practical.......2002-09-04

As an Aerospace Engineer (structures), I found this to be the one book that remains on my shelf. It has valid and accurate ACEDEMIC explanations of structural systems - but it does not lend itself to practical implementation of those methods...and many other books do! If this book is supplementing a curriculum, it will serve its purpose well. However, if you actually plan to use what you've learned - not here.

For a book that fits the requirements of application, please refer to "Practical Sress Analysis for Design Engineers", Flabel (ISBN 0-9647014-0-5)

2 out of 5 stars An elementary comprehensive treatment of applied elasticity.......2000-06-01

This book covers the elementary topic of mechanics of material (stress-strain relations, etc.) and more advanced applied topics (thin plate & shell, energy method, etc.). The elementary topics are well organized and easy to understand, but the more advanced topics are not enough, especially on plate and shell theory.

5 out of 5 stars Good for engineers.......2003-04-03

It is said Tymoshenko is among the first who introduced mechanics to the states. I gave it five stars because of its historical importance.I have this book on shelf, due to it large influence but, to be frank, seldom referred to it. This book, like all other Tymoshenko's books, was written in a pure engieering fashion. If you are looking at these solved problems, like twisting of a prismatic bars, this is the book for you. It involves many classical technique for solving boundary value problmes. However, if you are more theoretically orientated, there are much better presentations outside, from the moderate mathematical Fung's book, to the highly mathematical Green's book. It is my opinion that the beautiful theoretical parts of elasticity are absent in Tymoshenko.

2 out of 5 stars It is not a textbook.......2002-09-10

Like all Timoshenko's books it is not a textbook. It is a collection of solved problems. This book does not provide the general vision of elasticity -one of the most beautiful physical theories.

5 out of 5 stars This is an all time classic.........2001-06-17

A classic text and a good buy for a whole career. It covers everything. I know it is quite an old book but it is still the best one around about elasticity. I was using this book in my university years when I was doing a General Engineering course however, I still find it very useful. This book is a must-have for all engineers.

4 out of 5 stars A modern version of the Timoshenko book.......2007-01-11

This book presents the classical theory of elasticity in a lucid form, with many worked examples. The book is a modern alternative to the books by Timoshenko & Goodier or Sokolnikoff. It contains a brief introduction to numerical methods, especially the Finite Element Method, with simple programs. A good book for graduate students of civil or mechanical engineering.

5 out of 5 stars Fortunately... not Timoshenko.......2002-10-31

Timoshenko's book is a collection of exercises. Landau's book is a collection of ideas.

4 out of 5 stars Sure... not Timoshenko........2000-06-28

Timoshenko is a Russian genious scientist/engineer who has credits in theory of elasticity and vibration analysis. Landau is a great physics educator in general but not an expert of elasticity. If you compare any elasticity book with Timoshenko's you will sure be very disappointed. Anyway I think this book is still fairly well written.

    3 out of 5 stars Not Timoshenko.......2000-03-31

I was looking for something similar to Timoshenko's "Theory of Elasticity." This was not it. I am a working mechanical engineer. This book is aimed at the physicist/student. It is 200 pages long and crammed full of tensors. They also hit on waves and liquid crystals. I may or may not keep this book.

3 out of 5 stars Bad print for an otherwise good textbook........1999-10-21

The book is a classic in the field; it's well written and clear, with interesting problems. However, the Publisher chose very tiny fonts, sometimes lacking in toner. Overall they did a terrible print, hard to read!

5 out of 5 stars A CONCISE AND ELEGANT BOOK ON ELASTICITY.......1998-07-24

This is the Volume 7 of the famous Course of Theoretical Physics by L. D. Landau and E. M. Lifshitz. All serious students of theoretical physics must possess the ten volumes of this excellent Course, which cover in detail and rigour practically all the branches of theoretical physics. The Volume 7 treats the subject of the mechanics of deformable bodies. Unlike the major part of other similar books, the Volume 7 is concise and very elegant, and is at the same time detailed in the exposition of the basic elasticity theory. Moreover, it contains certain topics not usually found in other similar books, such as the theory of thermal conduction and viscosity of solids, and a detailed exposition of the fundamentals of the mechanics of liquid crystals. A highly recommended book!

      Book Description

This book is based on the analogy between contact mechanics and fracture mechanics as proposed by the author about twenty years ago. It starts with a chapter devoted to the surface energy and tension of solids and surface thermodynamics, which is followed by a chapter on elastic recall. The methods of Muskhelichvili and Hankel transforms for the resolution of plane and axisymmetric problems are studied. Then the essential conepts of fracture mechanics are presented with emphasis on the thermodynamic aspect of the problem. The reader will find complete analytical results and detailed calculations for cracks submitted to pressure distributions and the Dugdale model, as well as a chapter on contact mechanics. The contact and adherence of rough solids is also studied. This book is intended for advanced students and researchers working in the fields of fracture mechanics or adhesion.

      Book Description

The propagation of mechanical disturbances in solids is of interest in many branches of the physical scienses and engineering. This book aims to present an account of the theory of wave propagation in elastic solids. The material is arranged to present an exposition of the basic concepts of mechanical wave propagation within a one-dimensional setting and a discussion of formal aspects of elastodynamic theory in three dimensions, followed by chapters expounding on typical wave propagation phenomena, such as radiation, reflection, refraction, propagation in waveguides, and diffraction. The treatment necessarily involves considerable mathematical analysis. The pertinent mathematical techniques are, however, discussed at some length.

5 out of 5 stars very complete and useful.......2007-07-25

I bought this book several years ago, and keep going back and study more in it. As usual, I didn't read it from front to back. Instead I started from the middle, jumped around and then settled for chapter 7. That's mainly a review of continuum mechanics, and one of the reasons I keep this book handy. It is very comprehensive and very clear. I think the reason Simo and Hughes could explain things so clear is because they just really deeply understood it. There is hardly any superfluous talking or name dropping, it's all just clear, well printed math and neat little diagrams that lets you get the point. Somehow I understood chapters 8 and 9 much better by first reading chapter 10 on nonlinear viscoelasticity, finally getting the idea of dissipative processes in solids, and how one can actually compute all this. Recently I studied more of the first part of the book: finally this stuff about yield surfaces makes sense. It's a real mystery buster. Another thing that makes this book very useful are the boxes: detailed algorithms, neatly printed, that actually work if you turn them into computer code. In general, this book is not for total beginners, but if you understand the very basic mathematical underpinnings for continuum mechanics, this will bring you to the next level. If you get stuck, read around in other books, but go back to this one, because that's were you will understand.

This book is really well organised, and the theory is well presented, particularly Chapter 1. It is among the few which I highly recommend, and it is value for money.

4 out of 5 stars Right on target yet someting missing.......2000-01-08

The book had been in the making at Stanford for some time. I happened to use a manuscript of it in 1991 at Virginia Tech. I was pleasantly surprised how quickly a student could pick up relevant aspects of compuatational plasticity from this book; the book has a style of its own. We have successfully used the book in programming the integral (or endochronic) hardening rule with the incremental theory of plasticity. The book surely makes a useful companion to a plasticity textbook.

It is disheartening to see that the numerical schemes for the integration of the constitutive equations of the endochronic theory are missing from the book.

        Book Description

A simplified approach to applying the Finite Element Method to geotechnical problems

Predicting soil behavior by constitutive equations that are based on experimental findings and embodied in numerical methods, such as the finite element method, is a significant aspect of soil mechanics. Engineers are able to solve a wide range of geotechnical engineering problems, especially inherently complex ones that resist traditional analysis. Applied Soil Mechanics with ABAQUS® Applications provides civil engineering students and practitioners with a simple, basic introduction to applying the finite element method to soil mechanics problems.

Accessible to someone with little background in soil mechanics and finite element analysis, Applied Soil Mechanics with ABAQUS® Applications explains the basic concepts of soil mechanics and then prepares the reader for solving geotechnical engineering problems using both traditional engineering solutions and the more versatile, finite element solutions. Topics covered include:

Taking a unique approach, the author describes the general soil mechanics for each topic, shows traditional applications of these principles with longhand solutions, and then presents finite element solutions for the same applications, comparing both. The book is prepared with ABAQUS® software applications to enable a range of readers to experiment firsthand with the principles described in the book (the software application files are available under "student resources" at www.wiley.com/college/helwany). By presenting both the traditional solutions alongside the FEM solutions, Applied Soil Mechanics with ABAQUS® Applications is an ideal introduction to traditional soil mechanics and a guide to alternative solutions and emergent methods.

        1 out of 5 stars Engineers Only.......2006-12-21

This book is clearly intended for engineers or those studying engineering (as
the other reviews indicate). For everyone else, it may as well be written in
Mayan glyphs. I sent it back.

5 out of 5 stars Necessary to the students who are studyng Civil Eng........2000-05-01

This is a very good book. if you are a first or second year student studying any engineering(especialy Mechanics and Civil Eng.), You'd better it now. It helps you to understand the foundation theorem of mechanics especialy in elasticity. It's very helpful if you read it with Timoshenko and Gere's "Mechanics of materials"

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book for the library.......2000-01-29

This book is an excellent addition to the library. It's fascinating to read about all those great pioneers in mechanics, like Galileo,Prandtl,(he was also a great scientist in hydrodynamics and boundary layer theory) Boussinesq, Foppl and others. It's also interesting to know where the various assumptions we use today come from. (Transverse Shear deformation effects etc.,). The origin of beautiful concepts like Castigliano's theorem, minimum complementary energy theorem, betti maxwell reciprocity theorem etc are also given. Will make a very good reading for a weekend, if you are interested in mechanics of materials.
