Customer Reviews:
Amazing book.......2007-07-13
I have the first version of this book. Now I am so glad to have the second version too. It has great improvement. It added quite lot of recent FEC tech in, including Turbo coding, LDPC coding. Besides, it is quite easy for a engineer to understand, not awkward as some math equation filled textbooks. Its block diagram can be easily understood by an engineer like me. Amazing book!
Both clear and complete.......2007-05-15
Not only does this book contain almost all the important information about coding you could hope for, but it's written in such a clear way with such a consistent notation that it's also wonderful for learning. This book is more than twice as long as the first edition and serves as a great graduate-level text or reference for someone designing ECC systems.
Foremost book in the field.......2004-10-19
I had the previous version of this book as my text at USC. This version is a huge improvement over the last one. This one covers all the new advances and adds emphasis on the use of coding to communications channels. A complaint I had of the last version was that it under-emphasized coding gains and Eb/N0 vs. BER performance figures. This book has overcome many of those difficulties. It is still a bit ponderous in places but then it is the only book that covers the material in this much detail, truly a Bible of the field. It is a great graduate level text and a must-have book for any comm engineer. Charan Langton complextoreal.com
very useful for both beginners and experts.......1999-06-12
a very detailed book for getting into Galois field arithmetics, cyclic codes, convolutional codes, ... As a very beginner I had no big problems understanding the content. I am not the type of guy who could understand just by reading the theory - this book gives a lot of very useful examples, so you could call it fun reading it!
Excellent applications-based approach to Error Correction.......1998-10-05
Lin and Costello produced an excellent text which is targeted towards engineers as opposed to mathematicians. The mathematics behind error correction can be extremely intensive and, with other texts, I quickly become lost in complex proofs. Lin and Costello present error correction in method, with plenty of good examples, which those who need to know how to apply it can understand and the gory details of the theory are not as important. I used this book as my introduction to error correction and it continues to be a great reference book. The only drawback in it is since it was published in '82, it stops at convolutional coding and does not cover trellis-coded modulation or turbo codes.

Book Description
The purpose of this book is to provide an introduction to the concepts of statistical analysis of data for students at the undergraduate and graduate level, and to provide tools for data reduction and error analysis commonly required in the physical sciences. The presentation is developed from a practical point of view, including enough derivation to justify the results, but emphasizing methods of handling data more than theory. The text provides a variety of numerical and graphical techniques. Computer programs that support these techniques will be available on an accompanying website in both Fortran and C++.
Customer Reviews:
All new but just as good.......2004-07-26
This book seems to have been completely rewritten by the new author, only keeping the outline of the original, and it's for the better. The writing is as careful as the original, and as economical, so you have to master the early chapters or the rest is hopeless, as things start off slowly but quickly become difficult. It begins by considering the error in a single measurement, and proceeds to estimating errors derived from curve fitting. A few nuclear decay experiments provide examples throughout, and the author insists on calculating many quantities manually, even though in practice it would never be done that way. Some background topics like matrix algebra appear in the appendix too.
misprint and misleading!!.......2004-05-27
There are lots of misleading in Ch. 3. - Specific error formulas. See the original Bevington's 1st ed., and compare the formulas. I think this misleading should be corrected. Standard deviation is ALWAYS positive!!..
Great Book.......2002-05-22
I make measurements frequently and this book is great for providing the background to analyze your data.
I took undergraduate level statistics and it never really gave the practical applied background in how to analyze data. It merely presented concepts and presumed you knew how and why to apply them. This book is very good at helping you to understand the how and why.
I have read a number of other statistics book in search of the practical applied information provided in this book and did not find it in the other books.
The writing is clear and consice. There is enough background provided for even those unexposed to statistics.
I have not tried the software. Most of the formulas are easy to apply and can be implemented in simple programs or spreadsheets in very little time.
In short, I recommend this book to anyone making measurements of any kind.
"Updated" classic, but still vintage '92.......1998-01-06
Robinson's second edition continues the late Bevington's tradition of clear and concise writing, making this book a priceless reference for scientists. Robinson has added discussions of modern problems such as resolving closely-spaced peaks in a spectrum. The new version also adds chapters on Monte Carlo techniques and maximum-likelihood analysis, both powerful tools for data analysis made possible by better computers.
The chapter structure has been modified considerably, so those who have grown comfortable with the first edition over the past decades may not be able to find things as easily. Other than that, most of the weaknesses are computer-related. Much has changed even since 1992.
Robinson added an appendix on graphical presentation. This sounds promising but is a pretty trivial discussion of when to use linear or logarithmic axes and the advantages of a historgram. Might be useful for a very young student, but these days playing with such things is easy in any graphing program.
Many of the computer code snippets have been removed. Most of them were only a few lines of code with lots of comment lines anyway. The codes that remain have been moved from the main text to a densely-packed appendix, which makes them more difficult to study while reading the text.
The codes themselves have been updated from old FORTRAN to a structured language, but I would have preferred C or FORTRAN 90 over the chosen PASCAL. The latter may be useful for undergraduate students, but I've never seen a PASCAL compiler in a working physics lab.
The included disk is a now-obsolete 5.25" floppy. I had to hunt for a machine that could read it and copy over to a 3.5" disc. The text claims repeatedly that the disc has both FORTRAN 77 and PASCAL routines on it, but my copy only has the PASCAL.
In the end, it's the textual content that is important, and this book is a fantastic basic discussion of data analysis and statistics for students and a great reference for the practicing scientist.
A classic returned!.......1997-10-31
Bevington's first edition of this book dates to the late 60's when Fortran ruled the world. I was crushed when I lost my copy in the mid 70's and am delighted to find he's written a modern updated edition!

Book Description
An accident has occurred on the floor of your plant. How do you determine what caused it so you can prevent it from happening again? Or what if there has been an error in the production line that has led to the manufacture of defective products? What do you do?
The answer is root cause analysis, a process that allows you to find the cause of single events/problems in the workplace. The Root Cause Analysis Handbook presents a walk-through example that illustrates the method and shows how to implement it.
Because poor initial problem definition can (and often does) undermine the problem-solving process, Ammerman places special emphasis on this area to build a solid foundation for effective analysis. He also provides guidance on preparing the final report.
The need for clear documentation on dealing with problems makes this book especially valuable for quality managers, engineers, safety managers, and teams implementing the ISO or QS standards.
Written in a simple, user-friendly style, you will grasp the core concepts quickly and begin applying them to your work.
Customer Reviews:
Very Good book on Root Cause Analysis.......2007-02-21
This text gets right to the point about root cause analysis and the various analytical tools that are used in the process. It is a great supplement to the material I've review on the subject for class work. I highly recommend this text for anyone who is studying the subject for accident investigation or process improvement.
Root Cause?? More Like Finding a Scapegoat!!.......2005-03-05
Accidents happen because of an amalgamation of errors, not simply because of one person's "human error". Design faults, management pressures, poor training, long shifts, poor device interfaces, insufficent safety guards, poor maintenance, and many other issues come together to afford an accident that would not have caused that accident alone. Finding root cause enables blame to be placed and make the rest of the system feel "safe" while latent problems still linger. Safety is created by fostering a culture that sees risks for what they are and works to minimize those risks (better training, better safety guards, lessening worker fatigue) and NOT by placing blame on one "root cause".
Very good introduction to root cause analysis........2004-01-22
This book does an excellent job of quickly covering conventional root cause analysis. With an emphasis on documentation, the author takes you through a series of steps that include defining the problem, methods for collecting data and gathering information, analysis of the problem, and ultimately developing corrective action. This book moves very fast, reading more like a slide-show presentation than a book, yet the author is able to communicate a lot of good information using this minimalist approach. Rather than detailing numerous analysis methods, the author keeps it simple by sticking with a fixed path to problem solving. I found the "Pitfalls of ..." sections after each topic very insightful. In addition, the collection of forms, tables, and checklists included in the book (great appendix) are excellent. Don't look for case studies here, this is a straight forward how-to book
Unique approach to a traditionally reactive technique.......2001-02-13
My background is information systems service delivery. I stumbled across this gem when I was searching for resources on how to structure outage investigations for applications that did not meet service level objectives.
Prior to reading this book I viewed root cause analysis as a reactive tool to be used to investigate the causes of failures. The approach taken by the author is to also use this technique as a proactive tool in a manner similar to failure mode effects and criticality analysis (FMECA).
Here is a summary of what how this book approaches root cause analysis: it begins with a section on defining problems and collecting data. This approach allows you to take a proactive approach, especially if you are in an environment that uses statistical process controls to measure process performance. This is augmented by a chapters on task analysis and event and casual factor charting. This is where the author's approach begins to resemble FMECA techniques, which are proactive versus reactive methods of addressing problems and risks. This is followed by chapters on interviewing and reporting.
I particularily liked the chapter on interviewing techniques, which added a practical dimension root cause analysis. I also liked the way the author used hints throughout the book to reinforce methods.
The rest of the brief 135-page book is devoted to forms, worksheets and checklists that significantly add to the value or the book. I would have liked an accompanying diskette with this material in electronic format, but the lack of it does not detract from the book in any way.
If you want to use root cause analysis as a proactive tool in conntection with a continuous improvement initiative I recommend that you also consider Understanding Variation by Donald Wheeler. If you are seeking a more proactive approach to preventing problems in the first place you might consider augmenting Root Cause Analysis Handbook with Failure Mode and Effect Analysis by D. H. Stamatis.
Great book about a methodology I use and know works!.......1999-03-20
Provides a clear, step by step methodology, with techniques, for problem or error analysis and identifying a solution. This is an exceptionally practical work offering a methodology for problem solving that is attractive; one which I subscribe to and use. Recommended.
Book Description
This book provides a wide-ranging account of the literature on co-integration and the modelling of integrated processes (those which accumulate the effects of past shocks). Data series which display integrated behaviour are common in economics, although techniques appropriate to analysing such data are of recent origin and there are few existing expositions of the literature. This book focuses on the exploration of relationships among integrated data series and the exploitation of these relationships in dynamic econometric modelling. The concepts of co-integration and error-correction models are fundamental components of the modelling strategy. This area of time-series econometrics has grown in importance over the past decade and is of interest to econometric theorists and applied econometricians alike. By explaining the important concepts informally, but also presenting them formally, the book bridges the gap between purely descriptive and purely theoretical accounts of the literature. The asymptotic theory of integrated processes is described and the tools provided by this theory are used to develop the distributions of estimators and test statistics. Practical modelling advice, and the use of techniques for systems estimation, are also emphasized. A knowledge of econometrics, statistics, and matrix algebra at the level of a final-year undergraduate or first-year undergraduate course in econometrics is sufficient for most of the book. Other mathematical tools are described as they occur.

Very difficult to understand.......2006-05-06
I took this course at the U of Minn (where the author is a professor). He has a reputation of being a good professor and a good guy (and I have no reason to doubt it). Unfortunately, his book is very hard to understand. While packed chock full of information, it is written in a **very, very** dense style. It makes a lot of assumptions about your prior knowledge and there are few examples to illustrate the theory. While this may be OK for a grad student in math (or even a bright senior), it is definitely not sufficient for a non-math major and most undergrads. For a much better book (although of more limited scope and rigor) check out Roman.

Book Description
One of the challenges for computational intelligence and biometrics is to understand how people process and recognize faces and to develop automated and reliable face recognition systems. Biometrics has become the major component in the complex decision making process associated with security applications. The many challenges addressed for face detection and authentication include cluttered environments, occlusion and disguise, temporal changes, robust training and open set testing.
Reliable Face Recognition Methods seeks to comprehensively address the face recognition problem while gaining new insights from complementary fields of endeavor such as neurosciences, statistics, signal and image processing, computer vision, machine learning and data mining. This book examines the evolution of research surrounding the field to date, explores new directions, and offers specific guidance on the most promising venues for future research and development.

much more work needed.......2006-12-29
The problem tackled by this book is buried deep in evolution. It is one of the most basic properties of an organism that it reliably recognise others of its species. For reproduction, if nothing else. Humans have the added twist that facial recognition is important, for the extra reasons that the face is usually hairless and has many expressive muscles.
But the way the mind does its analysis is still largely opaque. By contrast, most of the book's methods look at it via other approaches. Signal processing with many custom features specific to faces. The chapters show impressive current capabilities. However, they also readily indicate the limitations. And suggest possible future improvements.
Book Description
Engineers and scientists who want to avoid insidious errors in their computer-assisted calculations will welcome this concise guide to trouble-shooting. In addition to its practical advice on detecting and removing the bugs that plague finite-precision calculations, it also outlines techniques for preserving significant figures, avoiding extraneous solutions, and finding efficient iterative processes for solving nonlinear equations. 1996 edition.

A Must-Have for every programmer.......1999-09-05
In the acknowledgements to the first edition of Numerical Recipes in Fortran, Wm. Press et al write "We also wish to ackowledge two individuals we have never met: Forman Acton, whose 1970 textbook Numerical Methods That Work has surely left its stylistic mark on us...." (The second being Donald Knuth) In Real Computing, Acton expands in greater detail upon the theme of the earlier work, which is that good computing routines are problem-specific. That insight and understanding are called-for; recipes and black box routines are insufficient. In the fifties, with powerful mainframes few and far between, engineers farmed out their computations to a computing center. There you could find the guys who knew intelligent machine computing. When the IBM 370 came along, every university had its own machine, and computations became in-house. The expertise you found in the old centers wasn't there. Acton worked in one of those centers, and this book is written to guide the reader in acquiring some of the old magic.
