Book Description
This book presents a highly integrated, step-by-step approach to the design and construction of low-temperature measurement apparatus. It is effectively two books in one: A textbook on cryostat design techniques and an appendix data handbook that provides materials-property data for carrying out that design. The main text encompasses a wide range of information, written for specialists, without leaving beginning students behind. After summarizing cooling methods, Part I provides core information in an accessible style on techniques for cryostat design and fabrication - including heat-transfer design, selection of materials, construction, wiring, and thermometry, accompanied by many graphs, data, and clear examples. Part II gives a practical user's perspective of sample mounting techniques and contact technology. Part III applies the information from Parts I and II to the measurement and analysis of superconductor critical currents, including in-depth measurement techniques and the latest developments in data analysis and scaling theory. The appendix is a ready reference handbook for cryostat design, encompassing seventy tables compiled from the contributions of experts and over fifty years of literature.

The Recovery, Recycling, and Reclaiming of Cfc
Book Description
This textbook contains a wealth of information essential for successful experiments at low temperatures. The first chapters describe the low-temperature properties of liquids and solid matter, including liquid helium. The major part of the book is devoted to refrigeration techniques and the physics on which they rely, the definition of temperature, thermometry, and a variety of design and construction techniques. The lively style and practical orientation of this text make it easy to read and particularly useful to anyone beginning research in low-temperature physics. Low-temperature scientists will find it of great value due to its extensive compilation of materials data and relevant new results from thermometry and materials properties, as well as many additional references to the recent literature. Problems are included as well. In addition, this edition also describes newly developed low temperature experimentation techniques and new materials properties.

not good for nyc license.......2006-02-08
I studied this book it has good information but not for the new york city exam, out of all the practice questions maybe 1 was on the exam, they should updfate or at least no whats on the exams .
New Jersey Refrigeration License Exam Q & A.......2005-07-19
This is the newest edition of the Arco License Preparation Training Manual. It is an excellent source for theory and operation of Ammonia and Toxic Refrigeration Systems. An excellent aid with vital information to help with your preparation for your State Refrigeration Engineer License Exam.
Contents are not just specific to New York City exams and regulations, they also apply to New Jersey as well as most other State's Refrigeration Engineer Licensing Examinations.
Many of the drawings and technical information have been absent from most technical manuals for years. This is a great single source to access all that lost information. It also includes the fundamentals of Absorption Refrigeration Plant Operation and Maintenance.
Many State exams include questions that are taken directly from this publication. (Answers to sample questions are included).
Great Book.......2005-02-19
I bought this book for less then fifteen dollars and it was the best fifteen dollars I've spent. I recommended to two of my co-workers. The book is easy to follow; has plenty of diagrams, illustrations and details to understand what's going on. The best part is the quizzes at the end of each section. The quizzes make sure you're paying attention. I'm an architect by training, and now I'm pretty confident that I can follow along with a conversation about a refrigeration system.
Good for New York City.......2000-06-30
Apparently New York City has its own Refrigeration Code and its own licensing exam and certification. This boook is aimed at people who are trying to get that certification. It's really not as practical as the Preston "EPA Certification" book for people outside of NYC. However, it is a very good basic refrigeration manual. Really well organized and with lots of good practice questions on each topic. A primer that would be helpful for anyone, but especially those in Manhattan.

Materials Science and Engineering: An Introduction
ASIN: 0471057940 |
Book Description
A comprehensive introduction to the structure, properties, and applications of materials
This title provides the first unified treatment for the broad subject of materials. Authors Gersten and Smith use a fundamental approach to define the structure and properties of a wide range of solids on the basis of the local chemical bonding and atomic order present in the material. Emphasizing the physical and chemical origins of material properties, the book focuses on the most technologically important materials being utilized and developed by scientists and engineers.
Appropriate for use in advanced materials courses, The Physics and Chemistry of Materials provides the background information necessary to assimilate the current academic and patent literature on materials and their applications. Problem sets, illustrations, and helpful tables complete this well-rounded new treatment.
Five sections cover these important topics:
* Structure of materials, including crystal structure, bonding in solids, diffraction and the reciprocal lattice, and order and disorder in solids
* Physical properties of materials, including electrical, thermal, optical, magnetic, and mechanical properties
* Classes of materials, including semiconductors, superconductors, magnetic materials, and optical materials in addition to metals, ceramics, polymers, dielectrics, and ferroelectrics
* A section on surfaces, thin films, interfaces, and multilayers discusses the effects of spatial discontinuities in the physical and chemical structure of materials
* A section on synthesis and processing examines the effects of synthesis on the structure and properties of various materials
This book is enhanced by a Web-based supplement that offers advanced material together with an entire electronic chapter on the characterization of materials. The Physics and Chemistry of Materials is a complete introduction to the structure and properties of materials for students and an excellent reference for scientists and engineers.
*An Instructor's Manual presenting detailed solutions to all the problems in the book is available from the Wiley editorial department.

Textbook.......2004-09-26
Not great, not written to teach, but with chunks of info stuck together. Way to many equations for anyone to use, but good discussion, diagrams and tables. May be better for theoretical/computational course than extending the basics of material science. I'll still learn a lot and have a good reference book, but there are better books out there.
A great resource.......2003-04-23
I am a graduate student studying in the field of nanomaterials. I picked up this book upon advice from a professor and i've thumbed through it's pages on numerous occasions on which i've found exactly what I was looking for. I would not pick this book up if you're interested in problem sets, though. There are only a handful at the end of the chapter and some of them are extremely hard.
Great Book that combines a lot of information.......2003-03-19
I thought this book was great. It combines a lot of information from "undergraduate" textbooks on material science and mechanics then adds stuff that I would consider as graduate level material. This is a good book to have around that has a wide range of information in it.
a really good book for undergrads.......2002-11-22
This book was a key asset in my third year solid state physics course. The material was easy to follow and explained the concepts very well. I even used it for research papers in my other physics classes. It is a must have for anyone interested in solid state physics.

Must-have book for low temperature physicist.......2006-03-13
This is an up-to-date "must have" book for all those working in the area of low temperature physics. Profs Enss and Hunklinger should be congratulated in having produced such a wonderful book. It is based upon a course taught by these professors for many years, and consequently is ideal for use as a text book on which to base a graduate level course on low temperature physics.
Book Description
Betts presents a concise introduction to the experimental technicalities of low and ultralow temperature physics research. He has made extensive use of diagrams as aids to understanding, and refers the reader to the professional literature as soon as the level of the text is high enough. Topics covered include all aspects of low temperature technology, beginning with an introduction to the thermodynamic principles of refrigeration and thermometry. The text also covers the properties of fluid 3He/4He mixtures, and all the means of achieving low temperatures, including dilution and Pomeranchuk refrigeration and adiabatic nuclear demagnetization.
