This book is very easy to use. all the chapters are well written and very easy to follow. If you want a book that covers heat transfer that is great for a class or great for reference then this is it.

Este libro lo conocí al cursar la licenciatura en FIMEE, ahora que lo compré opté por la 5a Ed que esta mejorado. Es muy util para asimilar los conceptos y entender los fenómenos. Me gusta mucho por que creo que está muy completo y se explica muy bien. Es un libro que todos los Ing. Mecánicos deben tener. Los ejercicios son muy variados y de amplias aplicaciones, ello permite ver la amplitud de estudio de esta área de la ing. Vale la pena comprarlo (les sugiero la versión en ingles).

This textbook is one of the best I've ever used. Incropera and DeWitt do a great job of explaining convection, conduction, and radiation. I have heard that the mass transfer portion of the book is lacking however, I am an ME major so its not an issue. The covering of conduction is especially good, it goes into great detail math wise although its well presented so you don't have to be a mathematical wizard to follow along. The book goes into a little bit of heat exchanger design, not very much but its a good introduction. If your instructor requires this book for your heat transfer class consider yourself very fortunate.

This book is a resource for understanding/solving complex heat transfer. There are no pages wasted on useless information, just vital information pertinent to the topic. The book is well laid out and well referenced. The chapter on heat pipes is a bit lacking. Overall an excellent heat transfer reference.
Where's the useful stuff?.......2005-08-28
You could spend the rest of your life reading this book! It would be useful for any professor or A student or other intellectual studying the material in depth. But for a practicing engineer who has little available time to ponder the specifics, it would take a "lot" of effort to find material that could be put to work in this text. If you are interested in deriving the equations you need yourself, or if you're analysing a unique design, then this is the book for you. But if you are busy with standardized systems and technology, find another reference.
A Misleading Description.......2004-12-16
I was expecting more tables and equations especially for natural convection external flow. There is also very little useful information about forced convection external flow. I also would have liked to see some sample calculations to demonstrate how to use this book better.
There is plenty of theory despite the product's description and most of it is probably unnecessary for a handbook. It's more like a big, expensive text for heat transfer than a handbook. A person would have to be an engineer, mathematician, or physicist to deal with the level of mathematics presented in this book.
There is a fair amount of information about internal flow for both forced and natural convection, but this book's value is quite limited. I am dissappointed with this book and would not purchase it again if I lost it.
Reference book for engineers.......2004-04-02
This is not an introductory book on heat transfer! Instead it is a thorough treatment on heat transfer in a stringent an extensive manner. This book places greater emphasis on correctness than "easy-to-understand-ness". However, if you do read it, you gain a lot compared to most introductory heat transfer books. If you are interested in forced convection heat transfer, this book gives well documented equations and charts for a great number of shapes, though mostly internal flow. This is a very serious book for serious engineers!
A very useful reference.......2001-06-29
I found very useful the way thermal conductivity was approached. I was used to solve simple problems by means of "Temperature response charts". Now it is possible to use formulas instead of graphs.

The Good:
- A nice amout of examples.
- Whatever is explained is explained pretty well.
- Friendly style of writing.
The Bad:
- No solution manual.
- Some mistakes in the solved examples.
The Worst:
- There is no focus on the heat transfer sceince itself - the equations are "dumped" on you with no explanations/development or even some example experiments that were made to get to the equations. The focus is on application of the equations to engineering problems and methods of solving differential equations.
The bottom line:
This book will not give you an understanding of the heat transfer science, but the ability to solve heat transfer problems. If that's what you look for - this is your book. Otherwise, look for something else.
Why only five stars?.......2004-07-24
This book is a winner . Forget about any other substitute . In this detailed text you will find all you want about every ine of the multiple equations about the heat transfer , clearly and powerful illustrated . The level of the problems are gradually increased so when you decide to solve them you will become in a real gladiator in this topic .
I recommend it deeply . Since I acquired it I noticed the little difference that makes the great difference . This is a heavyweight text and hardly you will find out another better than this .
A must for Chemical , Mechanical and Industrial engineers!
A League of Its Own.......2004-01-23
In Holman's (the author) spirit I'll keep this simple. This text (along with Moran/Shapiro's introductory text in thermodynamics) is among the best textbooks met during the course of a civil, aerospace or mechanical enginnering study. The language used constitutes what should be an "industrial standard" for engineering textbooks. It keeps the level of attention peaking by avoiding loose talk and wordy explanations where this is not required. This is (academic) litterature in its truest sense. I own about 50 science/engineering texts within fluid mechanics, solid mechanics/dynamics, mathematics, physics and more. Among these, this book is top three - no small feat.
textbook critic.......2003-11-30
This is a required classical text in most senior Mechanical Engineering programs. However, it was a difficult text to get through especially the sketchy discussed complex mathematical material -- if one is not well versed in Partial Differential Equations.
For most students, the text's analytical developments are difficult to grasp in the beginning since the author was inclinded to stay with the typical old style in writing engineering texts where as little as possible is given to the students!
I hope we're getting away from this rediculous old writing style and methodologies which ultimately needlessly blocks many good students from doing well or graduate.
Engineering textbook writers are slowly getting away from this horrible old style, by providing more comprehensive examples and making solutions manuals available to those students who wish to purchase them.
But, here I think that real market forces that brought about some needed change was the popular Schaum Outlines and REAs solution books -- giving the students what they really needed to do problems. So authors slowly began competing with these growing anciliary technical products!
Please note, in the past years, it was almost inhuman what technical students had to endure to get through their required courses to graduate.
Author J. P. Holman began in the 1960's with a really sketchy Heat Transfer textbook assuming students undestood the analytical proofs and then slowly began to make changes that gave the students more information in which to understand the complex analytical Partial Differential Equation derivations and solutions. The concepts of heat flow are not difficult it is the mathematics, the assumptions and the numerous steps reaching a solutions that is wild.
Hopefully, someday, we'll get away altogether from technical textbooks, which are inherently a 2-Dimensional medium, and move to modern medias that easily allow authors to write textbooks having 3-Dimensional data so students can quickly see and understand what the author is trying to convey.
Most technical courses deal with 3-Dimensional information so it is appropraite that authors move to new mediums soon and finally wean ourselves from technical textbooks altogether.

Some chapters were very useful and infomative. However I was dissapointed with most of the fluid mechanics. I would have liked more information about setting up the relevant equations. These chapters are very short and do not provide sufficient information.

I highly recommend this book to anyone new at the subject, it is really a very good text. The derivations are not confusing at all, in fact they are some of the easiest to follow. The way the book is written makes a hard subject relatively easy to understand. Converting units is one of the easiest thing in the world, and if the problems you have with this book are because of unit conversions then you shouldn't be reading a transport book. I also can't understand why someone would say that this book goes over vector calculus very poorly? It is not supposed to go over it at all! You can't expect the author to hold your hand the whole time, he needs to assume you have some knowledge before you read a book especially one on transport. Maciej should check out Harry Potter or something less involved. Another thing about Biskups review that irritates me, is how can you say you are a chemical engineer and don't know multivariable calculus? This kid is so dumb. I am chemical engineer too, and I love all calculus even easier forms like multivariable which you are required to know. How else can you get through thermodynamics genius?

I believe this college level fluids textbooks is severely underwritten. The authors assume too much about your knowledge in the field of fluids. The derivations are short and confusing. There are hardly any examples that you can fall back on if you get confused when you try to workout a problem. The chapters are really short. Plus, there isn't an appendix for unit conversions but they use multiple kinds of english and SI units throughout the "examples" and end of chapter problems. As a chemical engineering student, this book is one of if not the worst textbooks I have ever used and sadly owned. I suggest you go to class and pay close attention to your notes because you will only use this book to look up the problems you get assigned.Also, this book assumes that you know multivariable calculus like you're a math major. Goes through vector calculus very poorly and does not show how to work out the problems, but rather skips important parts about it. Hope you kept your calculus book and notes from your previous semester!

this book is a teaser....
it tells you of all the great stuff that can be known about the subject and then with a magical bit of hand waving, skips over the important (and more interesting) details....
This is perfectly ok for the "engineer" who believes in "let the mathematicians derive the equations; engineers just apply".
If I were to comment on the frequency of hand waving, I'd say a suitable metaphor would be the typical WLAN transmission frequency..... (~2.4GHz if I'm not mistaken)
alright... i may be giving the wrong impression of this book.
It does give derivations in sufficient detail, i think, to the satisfaction of most people.
(Things it gives vague hints of, but does not explicitly explain, are interesting things like the decomposition of work done through stresses to normal-shear or the alternative "spherical"-deviatoric components.)
I guess my dissatisfaction is mainly with the "teasing" where hand waving would have been necessary in order not to add another 100 pages.
But I'm still rather dissatisfied. This is an expensive book, even when discounted.... and the hand waving treads into certain areas which should not be neglected: Stress tensor not well developed, or rather not developed; the strain (rate) tensor doesn't fare too well either.
But it's a good enough undergradate text. At least good enough for a mechanical engineer.

This is a easy entrance book for graduated students. Chemical Engineers will be safe with this.

I found the book an excelent resource for transport phenomenom, but found confusion in understanding some of the parts. However, the explanations were far better and more detailed than others I have seen
