Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars a nice book on high power lasers.......2001-04-27

The authors give almost every details on developing high power lasers. Compared with several other books where the high power lasers are discussed, this book provides far more than the basic physics and device design. I am surprised that the authors cover such a wide range of issues related. In particular, some very important issues which the industry care about very much, such as facet coating, heat dissipation, cooling and package, are explained and described. Since the authors are writing on the basis of their own experience, this book is sure to be a good reference book for either industry people or the people from universities.

5 out of 5 stars a very nice book for high power lasers.......2001-04-26

The authors in this book give almost every details on developing high power semiconductor lasers. If you are dveloping the high power laser for either industrial products or research, this book is a good reference.

I am surprised that such various details are coverd in this book. Compared with some other books where the design and physics for high power laser are addressed, this book appears to provide more details for readers. The authors are writing their own experience, which I believe it very valuable. The important parameters which the industry people care about, are explained and described, such as facet coating, heat dissipation and device package, which I thought the authors may write more about.

Since the materials in this book provide far beyond physics and device design, it is sure to be welcomed from both the industry and the universities where the intense research is under the way.

    Book Description

Fundamentals of Semiconductor Lasers explains the physics and fundamental characteristics of semiconductor lasers with regard to systems applications. The detailed and comprehensive presentation is unique in that it encourages the reader to consider different semiconductor lasers from different angles. Emphasis is placed on recognizing common concepts such operating principles and structure, and solving problems based on individual situations. The treatment is enhanced by an historical account of advances in semiconductor lasers over the years, discussing both those ideas that have persisted over the years and those that have faded out.

The first four chapters cover the basics of semiconductors, including band structures, optical transitions, optical waveguides, and optical resonators. The remaining chapters discuss operating principles and basic characteristics of semiconductor lasers, and advanced topics including dynamic single-mode lasers, quantum well lasers, and control of spontaneous emission. The reader need only be familiar with undergraduate-level electromagnetism and quantum mechanics. After reading this book, the student will be able to think critically about semiconductor lasers, and be able to read and understand journal papers in the field. This book will be essential to any advanced undergraduate or graduate student of semiconductor lasers, and any professional physicist or engineer looking for a good overview of the subject.

      Book Description

This book presents an in-depth discussion of the semiconductor-laser gain medium. The optical and electronic properties of semiconductors, particularly semiconductor quantum-well systems, are analyzed in detail, covering a wide variety of near-infrared systems with or without strain, as well as wide-gap materials such as the group-III nitride compounds or the II-VI materials. The important bandstructure modifications and Coulomb interaction effects are discussed, including the solution of the longstanding semiconductor laser lineshape problem. Quantitative comparisons between measured and predicted gain/absorption and refractive index spectra for a wide variety of semiconductor-laser materials enable the theoretical results to be used directly in the engineering of advanced laser and amplifier structures. A wealth of examples for many different material combinations bestow the book with quantitative and predictive value for a wide variety of applications.

2 out of 5 stars Clarity problem in explanation of equations.......2007-05-20

This book looks and IS good when it comes down to going through complicated optical gain calculations. However, I feel the book expects reader to know important and advanced fundamentals of lasers which it does not go through in the book and may prove disadvantage to both advanced and beginner researchers interested in semiconductor lasers. The book includes many complex equations but they are, in my opinion, not explicitly explained in the text. In addition, what I found most disappointing about the book is that there were no examples to demonstrate gain calculations on any material (like GaAs-AlGaAs etc), which would really help in modeling a quantum well structure.

3 out of 5 stars not an introductory book.......2005-11-12

Engineering students may have a hard time to understand this book.

4 out of 5 stars A good book but maybe over-priced.......2007-07-07

I personally found this book very helpful but also feel that at over $150 this book is quite over-priced. However, the book is highly qualitative and possibly worth the money if you can afford it. The book specifically focuses on semiconductor lasers and gives a good detailed explanation with graphs. The book although may have around 300 pages, it is not in-depth as many researchers would prefer. The books strength lies in the presentation and clarity on how the author wrote this book.

This book reviews recent advances in the exciting and rapid growing field of semiconductor quantum dots by contributions from some of the most prominent researchers in the field. Special focus is given to the optical and electronic properties of single quantum dots due to their potential applications in devices operating with single electrons and/or single photons. This includes quantum dots in electric and magnetic fields, cavity-quantum electrodynamics, nonclassical light generation, and coherent optical control of excitons. Single Quantum Dots also addresses various growth techniques as well as potential device applications such as quantum dot lasers, ultra-fast amplifiers, and new concepts like quantum computing using quantum dots.
