      Book Description

Internal combustion engines still have a potential for substantial improvements, particularly with regard to fuel efficiency and environmental compatibility. These goals can be achieved with help of control systems. Modeling and Control of Internal Combustion Engines (ICE) addresses these issues by offering an introduction to cost-effective model-based control system design for ICE. The primary emphasis is put on the ICE and its auxiliary devices. Mathematical models for these processes are developed in the text and selected feedforward and feedback control problems are discussed. The appendix contains a summary of the most important controller analysis and design methods, and a case study that analyzes a simplified idle-speed control problem. The book is written for students interested in the design of classical and novel ICE control systems.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to Combustion.......2007-01-01

I became acquainted with this book when it was used as one of several references for a graduate level mechanical engineering course in combustion. The book does an excellent job of explaining chemical equilibrium and chemical kinetics - particularly if the reader has very little previous exposure to these topics.

I would have liked to see more solved example problems but this is probably a desire of any student when using an engineering text.

This book is well written and presents much complex material for the non-chemist in a clear and concise manner. Those working with internal combustion engines will find the materials on pollutant formation (Chapter 15) very useful, including the 78 end of chapter references.

      4 out of 5 stars Readable.......2003-03-21

This book is used at UCLA for a senior mechanical/aerospace engineering course. I would only recommend it to someone interested in pursuing graduate level course work in combustion. Suggested Prereq: Heat & MassX, Fluids, Chemistry, Thermodynamics, Differential Equations (ODE, PDE, CPU).

      The good
It has good references to modern combustion sources/codes. good introduction to whats possible.

      The bad
A lot of derivations are made, but the equations arent solved, except for the trivial or ultra-simplified cases. So its not too useful for a practicing engineer.

      The ugly
He mispells prior as priori about 20 times, and refers to variable as rs. You dont know if it is r times s, or if it is multiple r's.

5 out of 5 stars An Introduction to Combustion : Concepts and Applications.......2000-12-29

An excellent introductory book on combustion. Suitable for an undergraduate course or for self-study. Fundamental concepts are clearly explained with many calculation examples and problems to solve. The material is presented in a very attractive and easy to read way. Also, has numerous references to webpages with useful information, plus computer programmes to solve basic problems, like equilibrium composition. The overall approach is to provide tools to make practical calculations using computational tools.

4 out of 5 stars a good cobustion course textbook.......2000-06-20

An appreciable attempt to cover the basics of all aspects of combustion science on a first comburtion-science course level, this book does manage to be very clear and structured, with good examples and clarifying illustrations, students of combustion science will find it a very helpful introduction. However, as many science books often are, it fails to present a synthetic view of this field, and the reader is left wondering if such a view is even possible, but the different chapters may serve those interested specifically in them.

5 out of 5 stars Steve Turns makes Combustion easy.......2000-06-17

I think Steve has abilities to convey scientific ideas in a simple, easy to understand manner. His interaction with industrial clients, industrial applications and combustion equipment has given him an insight for explaining basics as applied to the real world. He also understands utilities of various combustion properties, parameters and correlations. He also knows how you can apply it for the maximim benefit for a given process. I recommend this book to any practicing engineer in the combustion field. Steve is a great communicator and a friend of combustion industry. At Air Liquide I have used this book to design burners, flames and combustion processes for steel, glass, chemical and process industries. Sincerely, Dr. Mike Joshi, Combustion Scientist, Air Liquide, Chicago Research Center, Countryside, IL 60525

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive yet easy to read.......2007-09-13

Good comprehensive book, yet easy for a non Engineer. Pretty updated, it covers most of the information required by Engine enthusiasts. Personally, I would recommend to have a copy as a reference to the subject.

      3 out of 5 stars Advanced.......2007-03-25

It might not be enough to build your own engine, but it seems to be close. It is painstakingly detailed, and goes heavily into specific engines and engine technologies, which is fine for some, but too advanced for me. I was looking for something a bit more basic and well explained, while this is more like a textbook from school. Personally I can't learn from those, and find it to be slavery to try to learn something from heavy text, but it is very detailed, and you can pull theory and a lot of good understanding from it, so if you need something more than basic knowledge I'd recommend it. However, I was looking for something more basic explaining me how engines work and how they are built. This was too much.

5 out of 5 stars the best book i have ever read!.......2006-06-03

Like R. Trulov said, this book can appear extremely challenging at first. The fact that it is titled "Introduction to Internal Combustion Engines" makes you feel stupid and overwhelmed at first. If this is the introduction whats coming up next!!

Im a senior in high school and went to talk to a mech engineering professor at Stanford. He uses this book to teach his classes. So i decided to buy it on amazon. All i can say is that it is amazing! I am 100 pages into it and the chapter about fuels was a pleasure to read. it is extremely informative, and it really goes into detail. I have found myself doing research on the side and even setting up my own little experiments! I annotate and underline all the cool information i find. this book isnt for the faint of heart, but if you stick with it, you can really learn a lot. I find myself skipping over some of the more complex chemical formulas, but all the information you could ever want is there. I like how Stone really explains stuff on a rudimentary level, so you have all the basic building blocks and can go from there. Instead of throwing information at you, you get a chance to understand where all of it is coming from and how he derived it which is very cool. I originally purchased this book hoping that i could learn the secret to making my truck go faster. however, i have learned more than i could have ever imagined. this book is huge and goes into great detail about everything, and while it is hard to read, it is still definetly worth reading. Thank you Dr. Stone!

      2 out of 5 stars REVIEW.......2006-02-23

The book is really hard to read. Much of the information is not explained in needed detail. Prelimenary courses should be taken or books read, in thermodynamics, to be able to understand that stuff. However, even with a good thermodynamic background, the book is hard to understand, even as a sumplement to the ICE course.

5 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to the IC Engine.......2004-10-01

I was looking for a book that would start at near-zero to introduce me to internal combustion engines and how they work.

I had always heard things like, "2 stroke engines produce almost twice as much power as a comparable displacement 4 stroke".

I know that engines typically had exhaust and intake valves and some sort of piston inside a cylinder.

But how these things all worked, I really didn't understand, other than a flammable charge ignited somewhere near the top of a piston stroke driving a piston down, resulting in a circular motion.

This book took me beyond my level of understanding before I even finished the introduction.

Yet, it was easy enough to understand that I was able to read it and comprehend, though I'm not an engineer or engineering student.

For those interested in the "why" and "wherefore" of an internal combustion engine, I think this book is excellent. It provides complete, detailed information on the theoretical operation of the IC engine, without teaching at either too high or too low a level.

I think after reading this book, it would be possible for a mechanically inclined person with access to the right tools to design their own simple IC engine.

For my purposes, this was the right book to get.

      Book Description

The internal combustion engine that powers the modern automobile has changed very little from its initial design of some eighty years ago. Unlike many high tech advances, engine design still depends on an understanding of basic fluid mechanics and thermodynamics. This text offers a fresh approach to the study of engines, with an emphasis on design and on fluid dynamics. Professor Lumley, a renowned fluid dynamicist, provides a lucid explanation of how air and fuel are mixed, how they get into the engine, what happens to them there, and how they get out again. Particular attention is given to the complex issue of pollution. Every chapter includes numerous illustrations and examples and concludes with homework problems. Examples are taken from the early days of engine design, as well as the latest designs, such as stratified charge gasoline direct injection engines. It is intended that the text be used in conjunction with the Stanford Engine Simulation Program (ESP). This user-friendly, interactive software tool answers a significant need not addressed by other texts on engines. Aimed at undergraduate and first-year graduate students, the book will also appeal to hobbyists and car buffs who will appreciate the wealth of illustrations of classic, racing, and modern engines.

5 out of 5 stars Best as a textbook, but still interesting otherwise.......2005-10-05

This slim volume is for engineering students, complete with end-of-chapter problems, but is nonetheless readable, or at least skimmable, from cover to cover for those with an interest in engines. The writing is concise but not dry, with the author recounting his personal experiences with ruined VW engines. It has a sense of history, considering the 3.4L Jaguar engine first used in 1948 sufficiently modern to use as a benchmark to measure the late-Nineties Daihatsu against.
Some later sections run to several pages of calculations, so you won't read everything, but you'll still get a good qualitative understanding due to the author's own command of the subject.

4 out of 5 stars Good for beginners, good for advanced users.......2000-07-13

The book begins very simple so beginners can use it. It is not a book a non-techical can easily read. I was looking for some theory about manifold design and the book gave me a good impression of the available methods. A disadvantage of the book is that it refers to ESP software developed at Stanford university. It is meant for instructural purposes but it is not downloadable from the Stanford university site. Overall I think the book is good due to the up-todate examples.

I am happy that a book like this exists. Though one can find a lot of information on the subject of yagna or agnihotra, there is nothing compiled this well along with scientific research studies. It has a very good sections describing about the effect of clearing pollution by yagna on the surrounding environment. I was under the impression that the any smoke is smoke and would always create pollution, but instead this book made me understand that the smoke coming out of the yagna has different composition of gases as compared to the others. The innumerable benefits of yagna mentioned here are unbelievable.
