5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2003-10-26

As a student with a thorough interest in the study of Lasers (with an emphasis on diodes and the light-emission spectra), I found this book incredibly interesting and useful. Richard Scheps has written a book that not only provides ample information and study, but also he writes in a simple (yet not patronizingly so) and understandable language. Bravo Richard Scheps for this terrific addition to my laboratory!

Book Description

The Physics of Semiconductors provides material for a comprehensive upper-level-undergraduate and graduate course on the subject, guiding readers to the point where they can choose a special topic and begin supervised research. The textbook provides a balance between essential aspects of solid-state and semiconductor physics, on the one hand, and the principles of various semiconductor devices and their applications in electronic and photonic devices, on the other. It highlights many practical aspects of semiconductors such as alloys, strain, heterostructures, nanostructures, that are necessary in modern semiconductor research but typically omitted in textbooks. For the interested reader some additional advanced topics are included, such as Bragg mirrors, resonators, polarized and magnetic semiconductors are included. Also supplied are explicit formulas for many results, to support better understanding. The Physics of Semiconductors requires little or no prior knowledge of solid-state physics and evolved from a highy regarded two-semester course at the University of Leipzig.

5 out of 5 stars Nice survey of modern semiconductor science.......2006-11-11

This book is extremely well illustrated. It is a pleasure thumbing through the book and learning something in a new area just by looking at all the diagrams and pictures. However, the discussions of semiconductor devices are pretty sketchy, and formula derivations are mostly non-existent. For example, the book gives expressions for the different mobility limits for ionized impurity and phonon scattering, but does not derive any of them like Seeger would, although references are given. Unlike the Seeger classic, in its 9th edition, where new topics kind of look like they were just thrown in, this book has a more coherent integrated treatment of "new" topics with the older classical topics. If you want in-depth discussions, you will likely be disappointed. However, if you are looking for a broad survey of modern areas of interest in semiconductor physics and technology, with lots of well-chosen figures and diagrams, this is a fine book.

Book Description

A step-by-step guide to the design and analysis of CMOS operational amplifiers and comparators

This volume is a comprehensive text that offers a detailed treatment of the analysis and design principles of two of the most important components of analog metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) circuits, namely operational amplifiers (op-amps) and comparators. The book covers the physical operation of these components, their design procedures, and applications to analog MOS circuits-particularly those involving switched-capacitor circuits, and analog-to-digital (A/D) and digital-to-analog (D/A) converters. Roubik Gregorian, a leading authority in the field, gives circuit designers the technical knowledge they need to design high-performance op-amps and comparators suitable for most analog circuit applications. In this self-contained treatment, which is loosely based on his well-received 1986 book, Analog MOS Integrated Circuits for Signal Processing (coauthored with Gabor C. Temes), Gregorian reviews the required basics before advancing to state-of-the-art topics and problem-solving techniques. This valuable guide:
* Clearly explains configuration and performance limitation issues affecting the operation of CMOS op-amps and comparators
* Details advanced design procedures to improve performance
* Provides practical design examples suitable for a broad range of analog circuit applications
* Incorporates hundreds of illustrations into the text
* Concludes each chapter with problems and references to advanced topics, useful in textbook adoptions

Introduction to CMOS Op-Amps and Comparators is invaluable for analog and mixed-signal designers, for senior and graduate students in electrical engineering, and for anyone who would like to keep up with this essential technology.

Book Description

In this upper-level text, Professor Tanner introduces the reader to the behavior of electrons in solids, starting with the simplest possible model. Unlike other solid state physics texts, this book does not begin with complex crystallography, but instead builds up from the simplest possible model of a free electron in a box and introduces higher levels of complexity only when the simple model is inadequate. The approach is to introduce the subject through its historical development, and to show how quantum mechanics is necessary for an understanding of the properties of electrons in solids. The author also includes an examination of the consequences of collective behavior in the phenomena of magnetism and superconductivity. Examples and problems are included for practice.

5 out of 5 stars Read this before Ashcroft and Mermin.......2006-01-24

I was a math major as an undergraduate but found myself doing experimental solid state physics in graduate school. I had never had an undergraduate course in solid state and needed something that would allow me to catch up quickly, so I got this book. It is very thin and very accessible. You can read the whole thing and do all the problems in your spare time over the course of a few weeks. Less, if you put your mind to it. The standard textbook for solid state physics, Ashcroft and Mermin, is, in my opinion, a little too long for an introduction if you've never been exposed to the subject before. I'm also not fond of Kittel's undergraduate solid state book. Tanner's is just right. Read this one, then use Ashcroft and Mermin for a reference.

I graduated in 1997 and am teaching now. I recommend Tanner's book to my students, both graduate and undergraduate.

    Book Description

Low-dimensional systems have revolutionized semiconductor physics and had a tremendous impact on technology. Using simple physical explanations, with reference to examples from actual devices, this book introduces the general principles essential to low-dimensional semiconductors. The author presents a formalism that describes low-dimensional semiconductor systems, studying two key systems in detail: the two-dimensional electron gas, employed in field-effect transistors, and the quantum well, whose optical properties have multiple applications in lasers and other opto-electronic devices. The book will be invaluable to undergraduate and first-year graduate physics or electrical engineering students taking courses in low-dimensional systems or heterostructure device physics.

4 out of 5 stars excellent introduction to quantum structures.......2003-04-02

i read this book and it seems to be very readable. it explains the physics behind the quantum heterostructures in a lucid and tractable manner. i recommend this volume before reading the treatise by weisbach & vinter. those who want to start research on quantum structures will find this book as an invaluable resource. its comprehensive and almost exhaustive.

5 out of 5 stars A first taste of mesoscopic physics.......2002-10-14

Readable introductions to mesoscopic physics are few and far between, many being either far too simplistic and naive or too mired in formalism. Davies gives clear and lucid discussions of such topics as electron confinement in quantum wells, the integral quantum Hall effect, quantum point contacts, and MODFET's/HEMT's. Although by no means extensive and in depth, Davies does point out simplifications and refers the interested reader to relevant references for more details. Overall, it is a balanced introduction.

This book is a useful point of entry for undergraduates to low-dimensional semiconductor physics. Reading this book is good preparation for more advanced and specialized literature including: Solid State Physics vol. 44 ed. Ehrenreich and Turnbull; Perspectives in Quantum Hall Effects, Das Sarma and Pinczuk.

As with any new text, there are errata but an up to date webpage of corrections is maintained by the author.

    5 out of 5 stars Good Introduction.......2002-03-17

The first book you should read if you wanna do some Low Dimentional Electron Physics and only learned Solid State Physics before. It just covers all topics in this field --- with the knowledge in this book, you could read any new paper published recently.
And this book's written style is very friendly --- just a textbook! So it could be finished in 2 days if you know the basic notions in Solid State Physics and concentrate on it.

So there is no match for such a good introductory book --- there's no other ones like this --- I searched a lot when I tried to enter this field, and this is a good choice:)

    4 out of 5 stars 2D or not 2D..........2001-05-24

Graduate level concepts are expounded upon in the manner of an undergraduate text (i.e. readable. Boggle!). John Davies does not assume that the reader has already done all of the calculations available in the field. Rich conceptual descriptions are rooted in an easy formalism accessible to anyone with a background in the elements of physics. This text is proof that even the exotic physics of quantum mechanics in reduced dimensions is not difficult when care is taken by the author to relate to the reader as a student rather than a peer.

2 out of 5 stars 3 stars for graduates, 2 star for undergraduate........2001-01-25

This book is too advanced for an introductory of semiconductor. The language is ok. The author seems to explains everything with minimum sentences. Sometimes, I read those signs and I don't have any idea about it. Author did not explain it. I think author should expain every sign in an equation to make sure students can understand that equation. Another problem is the mathematics in this book. Many book would give references in the end. But this book expects u know everything( mathematics and some field and waves, without giving any references. The worst part is example. Author did not explain examples completely. It is jump from one equation to another. You need a high intelligence to learn from this book. the barrier to too high for an junior student.

3 out of 5 stars Overall a good book, but too heavy on the quantum physics.......1998-02-13

I have been trying to use this text for an undergraduate course in solid-state devices at the University of Texas at Tyler and have found that the material is far too advanced for juniors in electrical engineering. Singh goes into too much detail in quantum physics for the needs or interests of the typical junior electrical engineer. It would be best kept for selective use in senior-level and graduate courses in solid-state physics where it would likely be an excellent text. If you are looking for a more-introductory treatment, I would highly recommend Ben Streetman's time-honored and tested text (which I will use the next time I have to teach this course).

4 out of 5 stars Useful for experimentalists.......2003-12-31

As a graduate student in semiconductor physics, this was one of my favourite texts. A good sophisticated explanation of its subject, that went beyond an introductory text in solid state physics, like Kittel's book or that by Ashcroft and Mermin.

It strikes a nice balance between a purely theoretical book on condensed matter and an empirical-tending experimentalist text. The theoretical explanations presented here will be readily understandable to experimentalists, without having to wade through reams of renormalisation theory.

Perhaps the biggest inadequacy, to some, is the treatment, or lack thereof, of high temperature superconductors. Ah well, that subject is important enough that you probably should get texts devoted exclusively to it.

5 out of 5 stars Interested in transport theory?.......2001-10-24

If you are interested in semi-classical charge and energy transport theory in semiconductors, Seeger is still the best book to learn from. For experimentalists, this book is a boon since many formulaes are given in "reduced" forms - just plug in material constants and get a numerical value.
