Book Description
The science and engineering of remote sensing—theory and applications
The Second Edition of this authoritative book offers readers the essential science and engineering foundation needed to understand remote sensing and apply it in real-world situations. Thoroughly updated to reflect the tremendous technological leaps made since the publication of the first edition, this book covers the gamut of knowledge and skills needed to work in this dynamic field, including:
The authors have carefully structured and organized the book to introduce readers to the basics, and then move on to more advanced applications. Following an introduction, Chapter 2 sets forth the basic properties of electromagnetic waves and their interactions with matter. Chapters 3 through 7 cover the use of remote sensing in solid surface studies, including oceans. Each chapter covers one major part of the electromagnetic spectrum (e.g., visible/near infrared, thermal infrared, passive microwave, and active microwave).
Chapters 8 through 12 then cover remote sensing in the study of atmospheres and ionospheres. Each chapter first presents the basic interaction mechanism, followed by techniques to acquire, measure, and study the information, or waves, emanating from the medium under investigation. In most cases, a specific advanced sensor is used for illustration.
The book is generously illustrated with fifty percent new figures. Numerous illustrations are reproduced in a separate section of color plates. Examples of data acquired from spaceborne sensors are included throughout. Finally, a set of exercises, along with a solutions manual, is provided.
This book is based on an upper-level undergraduate and first-year graduate course taught by the authors at the California Institute of Technology. Because of the multidisciplinary nature of the field and its applications, it is appropriate for students in electrical engineering, applied physics, geology, planetary science, astronomy, and aeronautics. It is also recommended for any engineer or scientist interested in working in this exciting field.

Craig Scott Manufacturer: Wiley-IEEE Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 078033440X |
Book Description
"With a focus on providing a working knowledge of optical systems and their principles of operation, this book employs today's most important methods for optical analysis: geometrical ray optics, raction integral techniques, and the Abbe plane wave spectrum technique. This thoughtfully organized text uses fundamental electromagnetics as its underlying framework, allowing for a comprehensive understanding of both classical and modern optics theory. Understanding the theories presented in this book is an essential step for readers who want to produce effective design using current software. The author has carefully incorporated practical mathematics throughout for readers who want to further their analytical understanding of the material. INTRODUCTION TO OPTICS AND OPTICAL IMAGING will be an indispensable guide for advanced undergraduate engineering students, practicing engineers, and optical scientists seeking a comprehensive background in physical optics."

Book Description
This second edition of G. Winkler's successful book on random field approaches to image analysis, related Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods, and statistical inference with emphasis on Bayesian image analysis concentrates more on general principles and models and less on details of concrete applications. Addressed to students and scientists from mathematics, statistics, physics, engineering, and computer science, it will serve as an introduction to the mathematical aspects rather than a survey. Basically no prior knowledge of mathematics or statistics is required.Customer Reviews:

Introduction to Image Stabilization (SPIE Tutorial Texts in Optical Engineering Vol. TT73)
Scott W. Teare , and Sergio R. Restaino Manufacturer: SPIE Publications ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0819464341 Release Date: 2006-09-14 |
Product Description
The use of image stabilization has grown to the point that it is now a common component of modern optical systems for imaging, communications, and remote-sensing applications. The benefits of image stabilization to astronomical research alone are so rich that it is common for astronomical telescopes, built over the last century, to be retrofitted with fast steering mirrors and tip-tilt sensors to extend their useful lifetimes. This text provides the basics of image stabilization starting with a consideration of the cause of image blurring and an introduction to the components commonly used in constructing a stabilized imaging system. With this foundation, an example image stabilized system is described and used to introduce some of the important parameters in evaluating the performance of image stabilization systems. As image stabilization systems are key components of adaptive optics systems, the more sophisticated sensing and correction devices used in this area are briefly addressed. Rather than being a mathematical, rigorous treatment of image stabilization, it provides the basic ideas in an easy-to-read format.
