Excellent reference work and study guide for magnetism.......2003-08-11
This is an immensely important compilation of the state-of-
the-art quantum electronic interpretation of the physics of magnetism. Doctor O'Handley has masterfully organized his lecture notes and has produced a magnum opus.
I had the extraordinary good fortune of attending his lecture series at the University of Florida in 1994. The class was primarily for materials engineering graduate students, but I was allowed to take the class because I was doing research in magnetic devices for electrical engineering. Even though the physics involved was at a higher level than I was used to, Dr. O'Handley was able to communicate the necessary concepts in a lucid manner.
His intelligible explanations in the lecture hall are repeated and expanded in this well-crafted volume.
If you are interested in the science of magnetism from an electrical engineering, or material science, perspective, I wholeheartedly recommend purchasing this book.
Modern Magnetic Materials: Principles and Applications.......2001-12-01
This book will take you from basic academic knowledge about magnetism to a proficient understanding of the most recent advances in magnetic materials and devices. This book is well very organized and written in a concise manner. Dr. O'Handley has earned our congratulations on both scope and quality for this book. Graduate students, researchers, engineers, theorists, experimenters and other newcomers to the field will find this book an excellent entry to the field as well as a handy reference. The book is one of the best text in the area of applied magnetism.
This invaluable book should certainly be present in the library of any department or institute carrying out magnetism R&D work. In other words, it deserves to be on the shelves of any lab or research institute library. I strongly recommend this book to every student and teacher who intends studying or teaching magnetism.
Modern Magnetic Materials.......2000-04-04
This is the book which contains all about the magnetism practically in use. From the basic theory of magnetism to the practical use, e.g., magnetic recording materials, surface and thin films. This is the best book treating magnetism practically. But this deos not contain the rigorous thoery using second quantization, e.g., Hubbard Hamiltonian and Anderson Impurity. That is, this book is the introduction for graduate students majoring in experimental condensed matter physicis - materials and materials science for practical use.

Very strong monograph.......2004-03-07
Given the time at which it was written, this book is still unsurpassed in its quality, conciseness, and clarity of style in the field of NMR. It was written by a physicist, contrary to Ernst's book, which is also excellent but focuses more on the interpretation of spectra rather than spin physics. (This was of course Ernst's intent anyways, there already was an excellent textbook on NMR by Abragam; he saw no need to reinvent the wheel.) While Abragam's book is quite a joy to read, it is also rather outdated. Nearly half the topics dealt with are no longer in use today. It needs to be supplemented by Ernst's book, as well as Callaghan's book. I also recommend Abragam & Goldman's book "Order and disorder" for a treatment of more modern NMR physics, if like me, you like eclectic topics. Abragam uses a purely quantum approach, and does not treat feynman path integral approach to relaxation. The chapter on relaxation is excellent, and has been praised by many, but he does not really explain much of the theory of random processes, so you'll need to learn this stuff elsewhere if you've never been exposed to stochastic processes before (well, Abragam makes very simple markov approximations, which is easy to understand as is- without too much extra background). Definitely the chapter on dipolar line width is worth mentioning.
The classic on Nuclear Magnetic Resonance.......1998-05-06
Referenced in countless professional journal articles, this 1961 classic is one of the seminal treatises on the subject of Nuclear Magnetism. Topics addressed are: motion of free spins, basic resonant and non-resonant methods, macroscopic aspects of nuclear magnetism (Bloch equations, transient methods, detection methods), Dipolar line width in a rigid lattice, spin temperature, electron-nuclear interactions, quadrupole effects (fine structure), thermal relaxation, line width theory, multiplet structure in liquids, and effects of strong RF fields.
All of these topics are covered in consise, easy-to-understand language, and the treatment of the material is classic and elegant. A necessary part of any complete solid-state or NMR library.
Book Description
Part of the Basic Skills in Electricity and Electronics Series, Electricity makes the introduction to this discipline easy to understand. The program assumes no previous training in the subject; only arithmetic and an introduction to algebra are used in explanations and problems. The text begins with a coverage of the fundamentals of direct current. This leads to a unified presentation of subject generally associated with alternating currents. Throughout the text, concepts build from one chapter to another. This important feature enables students to develop a unified understanding of electricity and the applications of electricity.
A dedication to student learning is evident throughout the text. Every page features a vertical color bar that focuses on key words. Many illustrations with a unique four-color design highlight the most important elements. Short self-tests (with answers provided) are presented throughout the text to offer immediate reinforcement and build students' confidence. Another valuable feature is the summary of key concepts found at the end of each chapter. This new edition also includes performance objectives and critical-thinking questions for every chapter.
The Activities Manual offers a wide variety of hands-on applications, including experiments that emphasize practical aspects of troubleshooting. It also includes pretests and posttests, research projects, and construction projects.
The Instructor's Manual is designed to help you present a unifed course. It contains answers to all problems in the text and representative data for all the experiments. New to this edition of the Instructor's Manual is a computerized test generator.

Electricity, Not Electronics.......2002-11-11
Electricity.
This is a subject that is often glossed over or dismissed in favor of Electronics.
A firm grasp of Electricity is needed before one can hope to master Electronics.
This remarkable book does just that. It is written in an intuitive manner allowing a novice to progress through the subject with ease.
For the those who practice Electricity for a living, it is a welcome refresher. Even the "Old Salt" who has been doing it for years: there are lots of "Ah Ha's," yet to be discovered.
This Book should not be underestimated or dismissed; it is worth exploring.
Horrible Stay Clear.......2002-03-21
This book is written for someone with a 6th grade education and no more. It talks about magamps for pete's sake. It dosen't even broach the subject of transistors. NO TRANSISTOR THEORY!! What in sakes is electronics if not transistors! The stupid objectives at the beginning of each chapter, and the even worst review problems at the end of each chapter are simply a waste of pages. I am a former nuke electrician from the navy and a current IC Fabrication Technician in the semiconductor industry. I purchased the book to just stay up on my studies, but this book fell way short. My fiancee's daughter has learned almost everything that is covered in this book, and she is only in the 7th grade. Be forewarned, a bad book indeed.
This is an excellent book for beginners in electricity........2000-06-21
This book is written in the standard format for a classroom environment, which makes it very easy to follow and find previously read topics you may have forgotten. However, some sections would be easier to learn with the aid of a teacher; although, it is still possible to learn the material without one. This book covers a wide range of topics for electricity, but not many applications of it. Over all, this book provides you with a strong foundation in the electrical field.
Book Description
This third updated edition of Fundamentals of Semiconductors attempts to fill the gap between a general solid-state physics textbook and research articles by providing detailed explanations of the electronic, vibrational, transport, and optical properties of semiconductors. The approach is physical and intuitive rather than formal and pedantic. Theories are presented to explain experimental results. This textbook has been written with both students and researchers in mind. Its emphasis is on understanding the physical properties of Si and similar tetrahedrally coordinated semiconductors. The explanations are based on physical insights. Each chapter is enriched by an extensive collection of tables of material parameters, figures, and problems. Many of these problems "lead the student by the hand" to arrive at the results.
Customer Reviews:
The best book in the market.......2006-08-17
This book is an excellent reference book on semiconductors in general. The physics behind semiconductor theory is discussed very well, however, if you are looking for a book regarding semiconductor devices or electronics, this is not what you are looking for.
One advantage of this book is that it contains a fairly large section for "group theory", if you are using it in your studies.
Electronic, transport and especially optical properties of semiconductors are mentioned very extensively and clearly. There is also a whole chapter on photoemission, which is very useful. The concept of quantum confinement is addressed independently with illustrative examples.
If you are interested in semiconductors and want to buy "one" book which you can use and consult all the time, this is the book you need. The authors are some of the best in the World on semiconductors.
Best book on semiconductor PHYSICS.......2004-05-21
I'm a Ph.D on physics, I read this book from page to page and worked out the problems.
This is an excellent book on the physics of semiconductors, NOT on semiconductor devices! The text is well written. The physical concept is clearly explained, mostly with a diagram or a graph. The formulae are carefully deducted without wasting too much time and space. I must add a few words on the problems. From all the physics textbooks I've read, only Claude Cohen-Tannoudji's Quantum Mechanics book is comparable. Those problems usually are about the the formulae, such as k.p. perturbation method and Luttinger Hamiltonian, etc., appeared in the main text but its detail is not appropriate there. The problems are by no means easy. Actually, some of them are really hard. For example, it took me a lot of time to work out the 6 by 6 k.p. perturbation matrix! In the process of working out those problems, I had a better understanding on the computational physics. You don't see that in a normal textbook!
The references are the classical or landstone papers about a specific subject, very good for further research.
In summary, this is an excellent textbook, if you want to study it hard.
3rd edition.......2001-06-26
The third edition is already available. The second is OUT OF PRINT. ENTRY SHOULD BE UPDATED
Excellent balance of breadth and depth.......2000-05-08
This is an excellent book on all properties of semiconductors -electronic structure , phonons , transport and optics . It primarilyfocusses on bulk properties ,but extremely succinct and relevant comments on hetersotructures can also be found interspersed throughout .
Many books on semiconductor physics err on the side of breadth at the expense of depth . I found this book to be a pleasant exception . I believe this leaves other similar books like Physics of Semiconductors and their Heterostructures by J.Singh far behind .
Cardona (of course) is at his best when discussing otical properties , especially optical diagnostic methods . I have not seen a similar book at this level which gives the same level of description of light-matter interaction in semiconductors.
I recommend it highly to all fellow graduate students .
Book Description
Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy is one of the most powerful and versatile techniques now available for the study of molecular structure and reaction mechanisms. Written by recognised experts in the field, this classic account of modern NMR spectroscopy was heralded on its first publication in 1987 as "the lasting text of its age" Nature. Now available in paperback, it provides a thoroughly comprehensive review of modern NMR techniques and the underlying principles. It describes the study of solutions and solids using one- and two-dimensional spectroscpy, providing both a solid theoretical foundation and a description of practical procedures. The material is presented in an intuitive manner within a rigorous mathematical framework, and is extensively illustrated throughout. This important work was written at the ETH in Zurich, one of the world's leading institutions in advanced NMR methods, which has played a key role in the development of Fourier spectroscopy, two-dimensional spectroscopy, and Fourier-transform NMR imaging. Available in paperback for the first time, the book provides the definitive account of the field, and is without question "a must.....for every self-respecting NMR spectroscopist" Journal of Magnetic Resonance.
Customer Reviews:
The ONE required book on NMR spectroscopy!.......2000-12-09
The long and incredibly productive career of Richard Ernst could be said to have written most of this book. It is difficult to overstate his constribution to the field of NMR spectroscopy. In this seminal work, Dr. Ernst along with his co-authors and collaborators Bodenhausen and Wokaun draw on a vast base of knowledge to describe NMR spectroscopy in a clear understandable fashion for the newest student. Yet, this volume is packed with detail to satisfy even the most strigent graduate exam. The first chapter is an introduction to operator formalism which provides the theoretical framework for the discussion NMR experiments in 1- and 2- dimensions. The subsequent chapter on 1-D FT spectroscopy contains a depth of information lacking in many other treatments. This is followed by a clear discussion of multi-quantum transitions which are explored in full in the chapters on 2-D spectroscopy. The fourth chapter on the formation of 2-D spectra is the most complete I've seen to date. It should be since Ernst and his lab did much to shape the nature of 2-D spectroscopy. This is followed by three chapters elaborating on different aspects and areas of application of 2-D NMR spectroscopy. Finally chapter 8 is dedicated to NMR imaging which was changed in no small part by Dr. Ernst's contributions. This book should be on the shelf of any professional or student whose business is to know NMR spectrscopy. Physicists, spin-engineers, and physical chemists need this book if they are to study the fundamentals of NMR spectroscopy.

Book Description
Controlled fusion research explores the properties of man-made plasmas confined in toroidal machines (tokamaks) by intense magnetic fields. Beginning with the elementary principles, the author gives a rigorous and complete demonstration of the theory of magnetoplasmas. He then builds on this
base to present a new theory of magnetoplasmas which accounts for many previously inexplicable phenomena of tokamak behavior. He explains the reasons for unexpectedly large heat losses, and raises fundamental questions about whether fusion power will ever be economically viable. Chapters are
followed by exercises and notes on the mathematics. This book is be an excellent base for a graduate course on plasma physics, and will interest researchers in both applied and plasma physics.
Book Description
Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Imaging is best known for its spectacular use in medical tomography. However the method has potential applications in biology, materials science, and chemical physics, some of which have begun to be realized as laboratory NRM spectrometers have been adapted to enable small scale imaging. NMR microscopy has available a rich variety of contrast including molecular specificity and sensitivity to molecular dynamics. In NMR imaging the signal is acquired in k-space, a dimension which bears a Fourier relationship with the positions of nuclear spins. A dynamic analogue of k-space imaging is the Pulsed Gradient Spin Echo (PGSE) experiment in which the signal is acquired in q-space, conjugate to the distances moved by the spins over a well-defined time interval. q-space microscopy provides images of the nuclear self-correlation function with a resolution some two orders of magnitude better than is possible in imaging the nuclear density. As well as revealing the spectrum of molecular motion, PGSE NMR can be used to study morphology in porous systems through the influence of motional boundaries. This book explores principles and common themes underlying these two variants of NMR Microscopy, providing many examples of their use. The methods discussed here are of importance in fundamental biological and physical research, as well as having applications in a wide variety of industries, including those concerned with petrochemicals, polymers, biotechnology, food processing and natural product processing.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2007-07-05
Excellent book for learning the principles of imaging. I initially tried learning from the book by Mansfield and Morris and found it rather unfocused and unclear. Callaghan's book is clear, focused and very understandable.
Far too expensive.......2005-10-31
Wow, I can't believe they are charging $99 for a softcover!! I bought this book 4 years ago for about $45 brand new, and now the price is doubled! No doubt this is a very good and useful book to learn the classical theory of NMR in a materials sciences context. NMR diffusion and the formalism of diffusion/flow propagators is clearly explained and should be useful to anyone learning the subject for the first time, or re-learning old forgotten topics.
The only book dedicated to NMR microscopy........2000-12-09
Dr. Callaghan's work over the past 15 years has been instrumental in developing microscopic applications of NMR imaging. In this text, he expands on the seminal papers that he has published in the field and brings them together into a coherent whole. The veiwpoint of the book is that of a physicist with a powerful tool looking at physical and biological problems. Of the many texts on MR imaging I believe Dr Callaghan's description of MR physics to be most clear and complete. This book is recommened for physicists and engineers interested in NMR microscopy of course. However I would go on and recommend it for any serious student of MRI wanting a single volume that has a clear description of the fundamental phenomena at work in forming their images.
Book Description
As with its predecessor, this edition uses a practical non-mathematical approach. Features a number of recent developments in the field including two-dimensional methods, solid state NMR and an enlarged treatment of Fourier Transform methods. Contains numerous two-color diagrams.
Customer Reviews:
OK, but not great........2005-04-29
The real strength of this book is in its compilation of a vast amount of physical data in tables and spectra. It is geared towards the practical chemist who wants to learn and understand classical NMR spectroscopy. The physicist will be disappointed by the convoluted explanations and lengthy paragraphs. There are no errors in the book as far as I know, but the explanations given and proofs aren't necessarily the shortest and most elegant. You'd need to consult other books for that. Also disappointing is its wide use of old school quantum mechanical wave functions rather than density matrix notation. While this is fine, it makes the derivations too long, and for no good reason.
Also disappointing is the price of $100 for a paperback! I boought this book 2 years ago for $70 at a local bookstore. How can the publisher increase its price by $30 over two years? This is absolutely scandalous given that it is only a paperback. You'd be better off buying a cheap pirate Chinese edition for $10.
A complete and comprehensive book about NMR.......2001-06-18
I strongly recommend this book about NMR principles by Harald Gunther. I study chemistry and it was useful for me in structural analysis of organic compounds. I think its most atracttive feature is the the clear and comprehensive way that uses to describe the NMR principles and experiments (including pulse experiments and 2D NMR). You understand what you read without having to read it once again. This book is also very complete and includes some solved exercises

Review of Principles of Electrodynamics.......2006-11-06
Principles of Electrodynamics by Melvin Schwartz is a very well written, very didactic book. The principles of Electrodynamics are clearly shown and the author explanations and demonstrations are rigurous but easy to understand. The book is a very good reference for certain topics of Electrodynamics not so well covered in other text books.
Exceptionally lucid........2006-09-29
This book is somewhat famous for its heuristic derivation of the full Maxwell's equations using Lorentz invariance, but every topic is covered in an exceptionally lucid manner, on a par with Feynman at his best. The book is also a neccessary antidote for the excessive detail and overgeneralization of Jackson.
A perfect introduction.......2000-01-03
This book is the best introduction to advanced electromagnetic theory I have ever encountered. The author does a masterly job at simplifying the mathematics without over-simplifying the physics. If you're looking to gain a deep understanding of electromagnetics and its relation to the theory of relativity, this book is for you!
Ce livre est un petit chef d'oeuvre.......1999-11-27
C'est de loin l'exposé le plus clair sur le sujet à ma connaissance. Quant au rapport qualité/prix, on voisine l'infini
Book Description
This new edition of the well-received introduction to solid-state physics provides a comprehensive overview of the basic theoretical and experimental concepts of materials science. Experimental aspects and laboratory details are highlighted in separate panels that enrich text and emphasize recent developments.
Notably, new material in the third edition includes sections on important devices, aspects of non- periodic structures of matter, phase transitions, defects, superconductors and nanostructures.
Students will benefit significantly from solving the exercises given at the end of each chapter. This book is intended for university students in physics, materials science and electrical engineering. This edition has been thoroughly updated to maintain its usefulness as modern text and reference.
Customer Reviews:
i disagree.......2006-07-03
i dont have it in front of me for a more detailed review, but the text is popular with german students and only after it became more widespread was it translated into english and redistributed. it's a fine introductory text (and better than kittel in my opinion, which reads more like a recipe-book).
Seems very incomplete.......2001-03-19
We used this text in an introductory solid state course. Overall, it seems that the text is far too brief and doesn't thoroughly explain the material enough for an introductory course. There are very few examples/applications. The problems in the chapter require research outside of what is in the text. It leaves out a lot of important details. I would really suggest looking elsewhere for a good solid state introduction.
Limited audience.......2000-02-23
I used this book in a course which was supposed to be an introduction to solid state. Know some basic ideas in crystal structure, quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, advanced and partial differential equations and Fourier anlysis and then you'll begin to be ready to understand this text. Kittel's Solid State text is slightly more helpful (but only slightly). The book is completely devoid of examples, yet there are sections at the end of each chapter involving current applications and experiments in condensed matter physics and materials science. Exercises require a leap of understanding from the contents of the chapter before them. Some experience with a computer language may also be necessary. I wouldn't recommend this book for most undergrads.
