Customer Reviews:
Great product & service.......2007-09-21
This was my first purchase from amazon and I was totally impressed by the quality of the product and the service! I would buy again from the same seller and recommend others to do the same.
A Very Bad Sequel.......2007-03-09
I have now used this book 3 times for a class. While the 1st edition did a nice job of covering the material in its time, the additions to in the 2nd addition are a disaster. What the book has going for it is that it at least lists the necessary material for such a course in the table of contents. However, all the additional material is poorly explained at best. The problem sets are too few and the ones that are included are generally weak.
I have tried to use this book, but after constant student complaints and my own difficulty with the text, I have finally concluded that the problem lies with the text and not with the users.
I think an indicator of problems was the large number of errors in the first printing; large here is an understatement. Even in later additions, the 4th, the size of the errata is huge. I think this is indicative of the authors' attention to detail and seriousness in preparation. I have found similar errors and ambiguities in the associate Computer Manual.
The bottom line is that this book has seen its final appearance in our curriculum. I would use any other text, even an older one.
There is simply not enough room or time to point out all the problems with this text. Do yourself a favor if considering this text for a class. Don't bother.
The best book for the discussed field.......2007-02-05
The discussed book is very explanatory and could be students' material for academic lessons.
great book.......2007-01-16
easy to read for computer scientists who are not necessarily experts in statistics. the code in matlab is very good, and helps a lot.
this book is a good introduction to machine learning.
Very well written.......2006-02-26
I liked this book because it does a great job explaining the concepts and the reasoning behind the mathematical formulae. Other books such as "The Elements of Statistical Learning" toss the Math formulas at you and expect you to figure out the significance or the importance of 'em. The book does not shy away from Math - but does a great job presenting it.

Up To Date Information on All Applications.......2007-02-24
A book that covers all important aspects of this technology, from development to various biomedical applications.
The Complete OCT Text.......2007-02-17
This is an outstanding book to bring the reader up to speed in
virtually all topics related to OCT. Among the greatest strengths of
the book is that almost every chapter is written by one author, something
rare in this era. The chapter on clinical trails may be a
little difficult for those without previous experience in this area,
but both this and chapter 12 do an excellent job outlining how
hypothesis driven research is performed. Similarly, chapters 5-8 are
likely challenging for those without a significant background in
mathematics. However, it is likely that readers from a wide range of
backgrounds will benefit from this book due to its diversity and
detail. This is a great book for both those new to the field as well
as experienced researchers.
An excellent resource for anyone interested in a deeper understanding of OCT.......2006-12-07
OCT: Principles and Applications is a cohesive text written by an investigator who understands the field from Maxwell's equations to clinical practice. Readers with a solid electromagnetics background will appreciate the detailed derivations and thorough coverage of OCT theory in Section II, including speckle, noise, common and uncommon variants of OCT, and practical instrument considerations. A comprehensive but brief introduction to basic mathematics and electromagnetics is given in Section I, which serves as an good review for those rusty on basic principles. Readers without a technical background may have difficulty with the equations in Section I and II, fortunately enough descriptive text is provided to enable anyone to follow the substance of derivations. Section III provides valuable information to engineers and physicians alike regarding the advantages and limitations of OCT for a variety of important applications. Typographical errors are a minor distraction. Overall this is an excellent first text for anyone wishing to delve beyond a superficial understanding of OCT, and a strong compliment to other available books on clinical applications and instrumentation developments in OCT.
Very Helpful.......2006-12-06
The book was very helpful. It covers information about OCT from both mathematical and physical aspects. The book starts out with a basic overview of the science of light and progresses into the more specific working of OCT technology. Almost every potential field where OCT would be used is covered. Section one is particularly good for physicians or anyone with only a biomedical background. I strongly recommend that engineers and physical scientists go through chapters 14 through 18, especially if they want to explore opportunities in an interdisciplinary field such as OCT.
OCT Book Review.......2006-12-05
The author has made outstanding contributions to the field of OCT through his conference presentations and journal publications and this book is another such contribution. This is the first book on OCT available written in a classical text book format covering a wide range of topics from the most basic engineering background material to advanced clinical topics. The book is written in a format that is suitable for someone new to the field, useful to those experienced in the field, and suitable as an adjunct for a university course. I highly recommend the book
Book Description
Now in a new full-color edition, Fundamentals of Photonics, Second Edition is a self-contained and up-to-date introductory-level textbook that thoroughly surveys this rapidly expanding area of engineering and applied physics. Featuring a logical blend of theory and applications, coverage includes detailed accounts of the primary theories of light, including ray optics, wave optics, electromagnetic optics, and photon optics, as well as the interaction of photons and atoms, and semiconductor optics. Presented at increasing levels of complexity, preliminary sections build toward more advanced topics,
such as Fourier optics and holography, guided-wave and fiber optics, semiconductor sources and detectors, electro-optic and acousto-optic devices, nonlinear optical devices, optical interconnects and switches, and optical fiber communications.
Each of the twenty-two chapters of the first edition has been thoroughly updated. The Second Edition also features entirely new chapters on photonic-crystal optics (including multilayer and periodic media, waveguides, holey fibers, and resonators) and ultrafast optics (including femtosecond optical pulses, ultrafast nonlinear optics, and optical solitons). The chapters on optical interconnects and switches and optical fiber communications have been completely rewritten to accommodate current technology.
Each chapter contains summaries, highlighted equations, exercises, problems, and selected reading lists. Examples of real systems are included to emphasize the concepts governing applications of current interest.
Customer Reviews:
Fundamentals of Photonics Review.......2007-09-24
The book arrived in great condition, but I bought it new. This is a great text for Senior students with an EE or Elctro-Optics background. It would also be a great text for first year Master's students. The book tries to do a bit of everything and is a great reference for anyone interested in optics to the professional optical/electrical engineer.
One of the Essential Books of Optics to Own.......2007-07-24
If you are in the field of optics or biomedical optics, there are three to four books which would be the most essential to own. The is one of them. This book is comprehensive, dealing with all the most critical areas in field, yet easy to read. It is either outstanding in understanding the most basic concepts, yet a phenomenal reference on the derivations of relationships whose origin is left to the imagination in most textbooks. This is a must buy.
A very good reference book .......2007-07-12
I found out about this book when I was looking for some materials on Photonics Switching and Computing. These topics and All-Optical Switches and Bistable Optical Switches, Optical Interconnections are covered in Chapter 21
But Chapter 22 containing Fiber-Optic Communication is very brief and for more detail one needs to go look for Kaiser's book.
All in all this book tries to encompass all the components in PHOTONICS and in doing so lacks the depth in some topics. But the good thing is that the references and journal publications are listed at the end of each chapter.
Part of Saleh and Teich's great legacy - a truly classic text.......2007-07-10
If you could only have one general photonics book - this is the one to have. It must have been a 'labor of love' to write - and it is truly outstanding in its comprehensiveness and clarity.
I use it constantly - wouldn't be without it.
2nd Ed looks great, encyclopedic coverage, up-to-date-topics .......2007-04-06
This book is well-illustrated and has very readable, qualitative, and often quantitative descriptions of many topics. It does not go into great detail on many of the advanced or newer topics it mentions. This is an introductory book. Many people learn a topic best by first reading a semi-quantitative account, and then going on to higher-level detailed graduate level books or papers if they find the effort on that topic is warranted. For example, if one see "whispering gallery mode" in some article, and wants to know more, one can find a nice figure and a brief qualitative description in this book. Now, the description in the book is not enough to design anything, but it is adequate for a reader to have some understanding and decide if he or she needs or wants to know more about this topic. Let's give the authors credit for even including such topics - how many books do you have that even mention whispering gallery modes? Similar comments can be made about APDs using thin multiplication regions to lower noise, or the use of strain in semiconductor lasers to improve performance, etc. I think this book is very useful as an undergraduate text or as the first (but not final) book you will want to consult when studying a new topic.
Book Description
Computer Manual to Accompany Pattern Classification and its associated MATLAB software is an excellent companion to Duda: Pattern Classfication, 2nd ed, (DH&S). The code contains all algorithms described in Duda as well as supporting algorithms for data generation and visualization. The Manual uses the same terminology as the DH&S text and contains step-by-step worked examples, including many of the examples and figures in the textbook.
The Manual is accompanied by software that is available electronically. The software contains all algorithms in DH&S, indexed to the textbook, and uses symbols and notation as close as possible to the textbook. The code is self-annotating so the user can easily navigate, understand and modify the code.
Customer Reviews:
Underwhelmed.......2007-04-04
Talk about over-hype from reviewer #1!
This "manual" is thin on substantive content, with TONS of whitespace & whitepages to stretch it out to ~125pages. The documentation of the code should be available as a PDF with files on MATLAB's file exchange or on the publisher's website. Save yourself some $$.
Excellent toolbox to learn & use........2004-07-09
I was one of the early access recipient of this toolbox and found it extremely useful. It basically has a whole bunch of cleaning and classification algos.
The toolbox also allows one to extend its use with new algorithms, tweaks or to use our dataset. As long as its formatted in the same fashion.
I would strongly recommend this toolbox, if you are looking for additional material, another book worth having is Christopher Bishop's book.

Useful, hard to come by lessons.......2007-03-23
I've had this book for around a month, and I've already been able to apply its lessons in the lab on several occasions. Hobbs has a way of anticipating the things that will trip you up ahead of time, allowing you to learn lessons the easy way instead of the hard way. Some of the stuff in here would probably have taken me a decade to realize on my own (i.e. how bad etaloning can be in a polarizing beam splitting cube.) He covers many topics in just enough detail to make we want to find out more.
[...]
Occasionally, Hobbs offers advice without making it obvious why you should follow it. Most of it can be cleared up by a careful rereading or consultation of references, but one would do well to avoid following advice without understanding it. Hobbs advocates "dead bug" circuit prototyping, but provides only the the vaguest description of how to do it (and one crummy picture). I googled the subject and found very little useful supplemental material, and I'm not sure how to research the topic further.
Overall, it's hard for me to imagine someone who works with optics who wouldn't benefit from carefully reading this book. A real gem.
Best buy for practical optics perston: Buiding Electro-Optical Systems: Making It All Work.......2005-09-05
Briefly speaking, everybody dealing seriiously with optical design, or even doing academic research, should keep this book on the desk all the time.
Excellent but sorely needs references!.......2004-04-29
This is an excellent how-to book. It's the Home Depot of optics. But the almost complete lack of references (at least in the edition I reviewed) is a HUGE disappointment. This general text could have been so much more useful with a few selected hooks into the specialized literature. I hope the author and publisher consider this seriously for future editions.
Wow!.......2003-08-29
I believe I have one of the largest personal libraries on electro-optics, how in the heck did I miss this book?
Highly recommended!
One of the best.......2002-08-02
When I meet someone new-to-me in the field, I have taken to the habit of eyeing up their bookshelf, looking for the books that they use. Whenever I see this incredible tome from Phil Hobbs, I know they have an excellent resource. Frankly, I believe that you should be embarased if this book is not on your shelf. This book is simply too good to miss. I recommend that you stop reading this review and buy it!
Phil has managed to cram information of a 100,000+ academic pages into this 727 page gem. His mastery of separating the chemicral from the root of the information is truly amazing. This guy understands what it takes to make a system work and astutely put it into this work. He gives pointers for lab rats as to the number of "post-it" notes to use to elevate an optical component, as well as detail theoretical discussions of detector sensitivity and the practical impact of the electronics.
The writing is sometimes folksy and hip. I find this an incredible relief from the academic 3rd person passive forced by many publishers. Phil occasionally gets funny and at least a few times, his folksy style is only used to clearly underscore the salient point that he is making.
My negative criticism of Hobbs is primarily why it took him until 2000 to publish this book---I could have used it 25 years ago, and whis I had this book in college! Also, a glossary would have been nice to include.

Flexible Flat Panel Displays (Wiley Series in Display Technology)
ASIN: 0471490296 |
Book Description
The special feature of the book is the in depth treatment of both the electro-optic effects and the addressing schemes of liquid crystal displays elucidating their interdependence. After basic explanations readily understandable for students and stimulating for engineers, physicists and chemists, the reader is gradually led to the latest developments such as vertically aligned and mixed mode TN-displays, compensation foils, multiple line and low power addressing, transistor driven LCOS-devices with DRAM and SRAM addressing and TFT-addressing of transmissive displays with a 92% aperture ratio.
The results are analytically derived and not merely stated to enhance insight and the capability to tailor displays to individual needs or to perform novel designs. Towards this aim the propagation of light with the help of Jones vectors, four different characterizations of the state of polarization and the operation as well as the passive and active matrix addressing of all LCDs, like nematic, polymer dispersed, guest host and bistable devices is explained. Besides the mainstream twisted and supertwisted nematic LCDs attention is drawn to bistable ferroelectric, chiral nematic and modified nematic LCDs as they are most promising for future portable low power systems.
Tables on display formats and units for the measurement of displays finally render the book suitable as a reference for experts working in the field and as a textbook for universities or display courses.
The forefront of research is reached by the treatment of plastic substrates, the replacement of vacuum processes by less expensive printing and low temperature fabrication of a-Si- and poly-Si-TFTS.
Customer Reviews:
NOT! DIFFICULT TO READ, A GREAT BOOK!.......2006-06-11
I DO NOT AGREE that Dr. Leuder's book is "difficult to read. Style and composition are poor." The reviewer does not consider that English is a second language for Dr. Leuder.
I have read many of Dr. Leuder's English language papers, and I believe him to be one of the most innovative pioneers of lcds, and recently of flexible lcds. He has trained a small army of P.H.D.'s about flexible display technologies, and his papers were lauded by dozens and dozens of commercial companies at the annual SID shows.
I very carefully read this entire book, and I found it to be a good primer for the bachelor level student, and full of lots of innovative ideas for the experienced lcd practitioners.
I especially enjoyed his chapters about flexible display technologies, and reread them over and over again.
I strongly encourage you to consider this book.
Technology Fundamentals.......2002-01-15
This work is a major summary of complex technology which is readily understood by way of diagrams and references to meaningful applications. It includes the mathematical support needed for the expert and yet brings the newcomer a breadth and depth which is outstanding. These comments from a physicist working in the field who yet develops practical products.

difficult to read.......2001-09-07
The book is difficult to read. Style and composition are poor.
The author overuses formulas while lacking clear formulations.
Don't recommend it for beginers and intermediates. While if you are in advanced category you may not need this book at all. Just to give you a reference point - I earned my PhD in physiscs/math. General conclusion: waste of trees, time and money. My sorry to the author for a bad review.

High quality overview of the basic ideas everyone working on wireline communication IC design should know.......2007-07-29
If you appreciate Dr. Razavi's renowned book CMOS Analog IC Design, then this book won't disappoint you since it has the same quality: brevity and clarity of explanations of what matters, clear figures and good organization. Except for a part of the PLL chapter (ch. 8) which copies from his other books, most of the book is original text which summarizes knowledge which would take much more time to gain by simply reading papers or looking at other people's design at random. Highly recommended for anyone who loves Dr. Razavi's style in his CMOS Analog IC design book and who works in the wireline communication IC design industry.
disappointed.......2005-11-20
The author doesn't have readers in his mind. I just want to use OP-AMP and photodiode to make a receiver but I can't find any example. The book should give a big picture in the beginning. Plus, the price is ridiculous.

This is the second book in a two-volume set. Volume IIIA (608 pages) deals primarily with system-related issues. The second volume, IIIB (515 pages) delves into greater detail regarding the design and performance of critical components used in optical fiber telecommunications.
Like volume IIIA, volume IIIB consists of chapters written by different authors. Although many of the chapter authors come from Lucent and/or Bell Labs, they do a good job of keeping the book at an academic level that is largely devoid of excess or offensive commercialism. This is a first-rate book that needs to be read and understood by anyone seriously engaged in engineering activities related to optical fiber telecommunications.
Each chapter is written in what is an essentially self-contained manner (though many chapters make reference from time to time to other chapters in either of the two volumes - a welcome thing as it brings continuity to the two-volume set). After a nice overview by Kaminow, volume IIIB dives right into what is arguably the single most important optical component to be developed for telecommunications in the 90's: the erbium-doped fiber amplifier. As with most chapters, chapter 2 does not overwhelm the reader with long mathematical derivations. Instead, it places at the engineer's disposal the relevant mathematical equations necessary for important analysis, as well as a wealth of references at the end of the chapter that facilitate further reading and the most quantitative analysis. This chapter covers all the important features of amplifier design, from gain to saturation, noise figure, coupling loss, polarization effects, pumping schemes, components, and various ways in which the amplifier may be used (in-line amplifier, power amplifier, etc.).
Chapter three covers transmitter and receiver design for amplified lightwave systems. The material in this chapter is high level. Topics include things like extinction ratio, rise/fall time, chirp, mode partitioning, and polarization mode dispersion. The emphasis is on how specific attributes of the transmitter and receiver interact with other components in the transmission system to affect overall system performance. Thus, the chapter not only discusses what laser chirp is, what causes it, and how to reduce it, it also delves into the system implications of chirp and describes why it is bad, and how to determine how much you can tolerate.
Chapters four, five, and six are something of a trilogy. Chapter four introduces the idea of laser sources in general for amplified and WDM lightwave systems. Chapter 5 continues the subject by describing advances in semiconductor laser growth and fabrication technology. Chapter 6 goes into more specific detail regarding vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers. Of these three chapters, chapter four is the most generic, and (at least for me) by far the easiest to follow. Chapter four covers subjects like direct modulation of DFB lasers, external modulation, integration of modulator and laser, making DFB lasers with discrete and stable wavelengths for WDM systems, fiber-based lasers using fiber-Bragg gratings (FBGs), tunable lasers, and a smattering on waveguide gratings and DFB array WDM sources.
While chapter 4 was easy for me to follow, I found chapters 5 and 6 rather difficult. Both these chapters are very well written, and the authors are clearly quite expert in their fields. The material, however, is sufficiently specific to the details of design that I found myself lacking much of the prerequisite information and knowledge expected by the authors. I think that chapters 5 and 6 will be of most use to people who actually work in or very closely with semiconductor laser growth technology and/or vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers. I did come away knowing lots more about these technologies than I did going into the chapters (things like how and why lattice strain is used in the design of semiconductor lasers, for example) but a more basic introduction would have helpful to me.
Chapter 7 put me back into more familiar territory with discussions about optical fiber components and devices. Topics include fiber dispersion compensators, fiber gratings, gratings in planar waveguides, and high-power fiber lasers and amplifiers. This chapter tends to be at a high level, with little specific information or mathematical equations.
Chapter 8 is really quite interesting. The title is "Silicon Optical Bench Waveguide Technology." Like chapters 5 and 6, chapter 8 gets into more detail about specific design and manufacturability issues. Since I have more background in this area, though, I found the chapter at about the right level for me (it did not leave me feeling as lost as chapters 5 and 6 did). One of the most interesting developments in this chapter (for me, at least) was the section on Fourier filter multiplexers. The chapter also has a relatively good quantitative description (you will need to fill in some of the derivations yourself) of couplers as well as star couplers and waveguide grating routers.
Chapter 9 is a good discussion on lithium niobate integrated optics, covering issues of design as well as performance and specification. It also highlights their applications as switches, modulators, and polarization scramblers/controllers as well as wavelength filters. Chapter 10, the last chapter, reviews photonic switching technologies. There is some useful information about switching fabrics, along with generic information about important specifications.
Both volumes have a good index and extensive chapter references, making this one of the best general-purpose desk reference volumes I've found for engineers involved in lightwave communications systems.
Useful and timely.......2000-03-03
Chapter 12 is worth the price alone: The authors have done a remarkable job of getting to the heart of solitions.
A comprehensive review.......1999-10-08
Optical Fiber Telecommunications III is designed for anyone engaged in engineering work related to the fiber-optics telecommunications industry. There seems to be little doubt about the revolutionary path leading to full deployment of fiber in the telecommunications backbone network, or the trends moving fiber closer to and closer to end users. Yet, while this continual deepening of fiber into the national network progresses steadily, a new revolution has overtaken photonics in the backbone: dense wavelength-division multiplexing, or DWDM. DWDM, perhaps more than any other technology, is the reason that the third edition of this seminal work is needed today. It's not too surprising, then, that most of the third edition is directly or indirectly related to design concerns related to DWDM.
This text is best described as an engineer's desk reference. The scope is large, necessitating breaking the book into two volumes. Volume III A deals mostly with system issues and concerns, delving into more esoteric component issues primarily to illustrate the wider network implications. Volume III B deals more with specific component design issues, such as sources, detectors, and erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs).
As a desk reference, there are few derivations of equations from first principles. Perhaps the closest derivation is that of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation in chapter 12 on soliton transmission. Even here, however, the derivation is sketchy at best. For the most part the book simply places the equations at the reader's disposal. I found most of the equations are explained well, and most of the chapter authors included numeric examples, charts, and graphs. This helps immensely in understanding the implications of the many equations presented throughout the text. For those interested in derivations, each chapter comes with extensive endnotes so that anyone interested in reviewing the original work can easily do so.
One problem with the text revolves around definitions of mathematical variables and constants. Though they are all defined as introduced to the reader, there is no glossary of these terms. I constantly found myself writing in the books margins little notes like "alpha is the total loss coefficient, first used in equation x on page y." Since different authors write each chapter in the book, it may not be practical to have a glossary of terms for the entire volume - usage will probably overlap. Still, it would be nice had the editors suggested that each chapter have a glossary of mathematical variables. It would make the book far more practical and useful as a desk reference. On a more positive note, however, the book does contain a detailed and useful index.
Even without derivations, the book contains a plethora of equations and charts to satisfy the needs of most quantitatively oriented engineers. It's a good introductory book for those with a modest background in optical telecommunications technology. It's also a useful book for those more familiar with the technology, but needing a handy reference source with most of the pertinent information conveniently bound between two covers. Volume A contains 15 chapters in roughly 600 pages. Volume B is slightly smaller, having 10 chapters in roughly 500 pages.
For me, the two most interesting and useful sections of the book were chapter 8, "Fiber nonlinearities and their impact on transmission systems," and chapter 12, "Solitons in high bit-rate, long-distance transmissions." Chapter 12 is probably one of the best written. Although the subject matter is among the most difficult covered in the book, L. F. Mollenauer, J.P. Gordon, and P. V. Mamyshev have done a remarkable job of explaining solitions in a quantitative, accurate, yet clear and concise manner.
The first chapter in the book, a brief overview by Ivan P. Kaminow, provides some interesting historical insights and background, but has relatively little pertinent information for the design engineer. The second chapter deals at a high level with SONET and ATM technologies, explaining the requirements that led to the development of these standards and some of their topologies such as chains and self-healing rings. Chapter 3 deals with coding and error correction in optical fiber. This chapter was interesting in its use of fundamental physics (such as quantum noise) to examine the need for coding.
The next chapters move from coding and protocol to issues in the physical layer. Chapter 6 deals with polarization effects, the origin of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) and how to measure PMD. On a similar theme, chapter 7 deals with the subject of chromatic dispersion and, perhaps more importantly, the subject of dispersion compensation. One of the interesting facts about DWDM is that elimination of dispersion is no longer a design goal, as it is with single-wavelength transmission systems. In DWDM systems the designer wants just the right amount of dispersion - not too much, and not too little. There are even situations in which the dispersion map matters - in other words, you cannot always count on being able to place large bulk amounts of compensating dispersion just in front of the optical receiver. Sometimes you need to distribute it along the fiber's length.
Two chapters, 9 and 10, deal with the specific design concerns of terrestrial and undersea lightwave systems, while chapter 14 deals with the substantial concerns of analog video transmission over optical fibers. Chapter 11 deals with advances in high bit-rate transmission systems (this chapter tends to be somewhat dated, and the situation will only get worse with passing time). Chapter 13 surveys the types of fiber architectures in current and possibly future networks. Finally, Ivan P. Kaminow finishes the book with a chapter on advanced multi-access lightwave networks, which is primarily the switched DWDM network (another chapter subject to dating).
This is an extremely valuable book for anyone involved in Photonics in the telecommunications network. I highly recommend it. Whether you read it cover to cover, or simply keep it handy as a desk reference, I'm sure you will find it well worth the cover price.

Masterpiece.......2007-03-23
This book is excellent. The author has the unique ability to cover the subject in great detail including all the theory, but yet make the reading very easy and enjoyable. I was amazed that I could read 750 pages of advanced and new material in a few weeks.
The 130 page! chapter on crosstalk is a Masterpiece. It is the crowning chapter of the book. There is nothing like it anywhere else. Almost everything the author covers is done better than in any other place. For example, signal spectra is covered in hundreds of books, yet the author has an original way of calculating spectra based on Dirac delta functions which I have never seen before; he covers the tricky subject of partial inductance beautifully, etc.
I feel like the other reviewer who wants to shake the author's hand if he meets him.
This review is a partial repeat of an old review under the name "reader". It was for the first edition. I assume the typos are corrected.
Wonderful EMC book.......2006-05-06
This book makes learning EMC as easy as counting one to three. Very logical, easy to understand, and makes you to think how EMC can be fun and challenging. A very good reference book, easpcially if you love to see things simplified mathimatically.
Very good book.......2006-04-07
I consider that this book is a very good start point to introduce oneself into the EMC topic. Clear and pedagogic with a lot of numerical examples and well chosen exercises.
Great Book - Read it all........2001-09-21
Starting first with the negatives, of which they are four. First, do not be fooled by the title word "introduction." This is NOT a book for beginners, but rather senior engineers. If you are new to EMC this is not the book for you. Second, information relative to FCC/CE requirements is dated. Also, some tests relative to CE compliance are not covered. Third, though there are many diagrams, there are almost no pictures. In many cases I found a picture, as opposed to a diagram would have been far more explanatory. Lastly (though it does not bother me in the least, but I thought you would like to know), the book has numerous typos through out its 752 pages.
Ahhhhhh, but what the book is, IS ABSOLUTLY WONDERFUL! As an experienced design consultant, I found information in this book that I have not, and could not find anywhere else. The author has A COMMAND of the subject and it shows. Compared to my peers, I consider myself fairly well versed in the subject of EMC as it pertains to design and debug, but I took a back seat when reading. It was useful even re-reading the things I already knew. The author always offered a new insight. Funny, but after I finished (and it took a while to read) my first thought was "I would really like to meet this guy - to personally request a sequel." For what it is, THIS BOOK IS EXCELLENT, well worth the asking price.
Best in its field.......1999-03-30
This book is excellent. The author has the unique ability to cover the subject in great detail including all the theory, but yet make the reading very easy and enjoyable. I was amazed that I could read 750 pages of advanced and new material in a few weeks. The book unfortunately has many errors and typos which prevents me from giving it 5 stars.
