Customer Reviews:
Great fundamentals book.......2007-03-09
This book had all of the information for a good foundation. It is easy to read.
3rd Ed a good book, but less like Sze, more like Ng..........2006-11-10
This is a fairly good book; however, it is more like a 3rd edition of the Complete Guide to Semiconductor Devices by the second author Ng than the expected updated edition of Sze's classic. Many of the figures are the same as in Ng's book, and although more topics are covered than in Sze's 2nd Ed, the theory of what is covered is often less in-depth. This is a nice book to have, especially if you do not have a copy of Ng's book, but I would not get rid of your 2nd edition of Sze yet. I am giving it 3 stars not because it is a bad book, but I truly believe there is a great deal of similarity between this 3rd Ed of Sze and the 2nd Ed of Ng's book, and I feel a little disappointed.
still a bible.......2005-11-03
This book is not for undergrad. But if you want to be a guru, you still find this book very useful.
A classic work.......2002-09-08
If there should at all be one point against this book, then it is that it is a priced high (at least in my country). However I found that the text was worth the investment. This book is one of those must-haves for every electronics engineer.
The text is presented in a way that will appeal to any student as well as working professionals, and the least one can say is that it is extremely well-written. This text is an indispensable one.
A classic textbbok for semiconductor physics.......2001-12-19
As well known, this book is one of the classic books for semicoductor physics. It provides a lot of information in various devices, although some probably is outdated. However, as I know, the author was trying to tell the readers why and how semiconductor devices become what we see today. Because only we know about what the pioneers thinked, we can further modify or invite new semiconductor devices. I must agree that this book is not so easy to follow and read, but, don't froget, this book is devoted for advanced semiconductor physics course. It assumes the reader is already familiar with some foundamental semiconductor knowledge!

Book Description
The CMOS technology area has quickly grown, calling for a new text--and here it is, covering the analysis and design of CMOS integrated circuits that practicing engineers need to master to succeed. Filled with many examples and chapter-ending problems, the book not only describes the thought process behind each circuit topology, but also considers the rationale behind each modification. The analysis and design techniques focus on CMOS circuits but also apply to other IC technologies.
Customer Reviews:
Every designer in my company has this book.......2007-09-17
This is by far the best book for analog designer. The only thing I wish to see is to include some simulation examples such as: AC analysis, noise analysis...
Also, as the technology moves to sub-micron, long channel approximation is no longer accurate. I wonder if author can comment on how to size the transistors for fewer spice iterations.
Maybe we will see them in the 2nd edition.
Grown appreciation.......2007-06-02
The more my knowledge grew, the more I have appreciated returning to this book as a reference compared to any of the others. Razavi's explanations are lucid and directly to the point allowing me to quickly recall/re-understand concepts that I either once grasped and forgot or never really understood in the first place.
It is OK. There could be better ones.......2006-11-12
I have used this book in a graduate class. It is good and very rigorous. It has good amount of examples and plenty of end of chapter problems. It is a good treatment of the subject. However, it might be hard as introductory.
Disappoiting.......2006-03-07
The book is too theory-oriented; not suitable for engineers. I felt disappointed.
And the chapters on PLL and switched-cap. are too common-sense! No use at all for practising engineers...I don't want to recommend this book -
Great book........2006-01-29
Difficult Side
Read Sedra/Smith book before trying this one. It is really hard to follow. It's hard to differentiate between small and large signal analysis, since author uses the same notation for both. Watch out!
Good Side:
Book is on CMOS analog ICs, so it's specific.
Book is very thorough. Behzad Razavi explains the function of each resistor in a circuit. Book teaches on a high level. Author put in much effort.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Better than the rest.......2007-04-08
I own five different books on semiconductor physics and this text is by far the best. I've also references a sixth book.
I understand the other reviewers complaints but I think this is a weakness of all semiconductor books or proof of just how complicated device physics can get.
It helps to have an instructor step you through a lot of the derivations to make you understand the equations.
I like this book because it explains concepts very well. Making use of the equations and knowing when to make assumptions just comes with practice.
I've found a few mistakes but far fewer than some of the other books I've seen.
My advice to students studying semiconductors is to go to the library and get as many books as you can.
Mediocre book; needs major overhaul.......2006-03-31
Assuming you have already read the previous (rather low) reviews on here, my own review may seem like overkill, but I feel that I must express just how bad Neamen's book is at explaining the material.
Most other reviewers have already covered the important points, so I'll just develop on two that I find particularly unsettling (after wasting several hours trying to see how the author arrived at the solution for ONE problem in his book): How is anyone supposed to figure out the many assumptions this guy makes when he makes no mention of them anywhere else? Also, how is anyone supposed to know what equations to use in what problems?
So far I've found that all the answers in the back of the book have been correct, however the problem is that the reader has to first figure out what equation(s) to use, which is why I'd imagine that many readers believe the answers to be incorrect. In terms of what the author explains, there are (presumably) several ways of obtaining the same answer, but for some reason this is not the case, given that your answer will often be different depending on what equation you use. Assuming the author is even correct in using the formulas he uses, he offers no explanation as to why one equation should be used in one situation but not in another.
Also, this book makes entirely too many assumptions and offers no explanation as to where they come from. Case in point: Problem 1 of Chapter 5 asks the reader to determine the drift current density in a semiconductor material under a certain set of conditions. Well, this is all fine and dandy, except for the fact that the author provides an in-book example IDENTICAL to the problem in which the answer is DIFFERENT. So why do the example and problem answers differ? Because Neamen (in the problem)apparently arbitrarily assumed a different value for electron mobility in said semiconductor material, yet he did not not explain why this different value was assumed in the first place, nor did he offer any clear explanation as to how to determine the supposedly correct electron mobility.
In summary, this book would be somewhat decent if the author spent more time explaining the material more clearly. As it stands, there are simply too many assumptions made and too few explanations for them, making this book a very poor source of information.
Awful.......2006-01-20
Worst book I have come across in my college career. My only D EVER is from a professor that tried to follow this book. Many of his printed solutions to the problems in this book are vague with "Trial and Error" that yield no reasoning to how the problems should be solved.
It would take an excellent professor to make sense of Donald Neamen's, incomplete at best, work. If you don't want to take the word of the many posts of dislike for this book please feel free to read portions for yourself. And please try the wonderful incomplete problems (4 unknowns with 2 equations for example on Problem 4.4).
A Little Detail Please.......2004-02-08
This is used for an upper division intro to semi's class at the Univ of MN-Duluth
This book is at best a poor text, but more likely it would be better with a reference book that actually went over the material, and used this as an overview.
I like what other students say about the answers in the back, "If you get that answer, you know your wrong."
Either the author doesn't really want the student to know how to do the material inside, wants an instructor to figure it out and teach it, or just doesn't care.
A poor purchase at 10% of the price.
Third semester of crap and counting..........2004-01-30
I had the misfortune of using his Electronic Circuit Analysis book my sophomore year. I'm impressed - he's actually managed to write a book that is more worthless! The examples are poor and few and definitions of symbols and constants was almost nonexistent. Get yourself some note cards or you're going to lose hours of your life flipping through this waste of paper.

Book Description
Semiconductor Material and Device Characterization is the only book on the market devoted to the characterization techniques used by the modern semiconductor industry to measure diverse semiconductor materials and devices. It covers the full range of electrical and optical characterization methods while thoroughly treating the more specialized chemical and physical techniques.
This newly revamped and expanded Second Edition incorporates the many innovations that have come to dominate the field during the past decade. From scanning probe techniques to the detection of metallic impurities in silicon wafers to the use of microwave reflection to measure contactless resistivity, each chapter presents state-of-the-art tools and techniques, most of which were in their infancy or had not yet been developed when the previous edition first came out. Featured here are:
* An entirely new chapter on reliability and probe microscopy
* Numerous examples and end-of-chapter problems - new to this edition
* Five hundred illustrations revised for this edition
* Updated bibliography with over 1,200 references
* Easy-to-use text including a real-world mix of units rather than strictly MKS units.
This practical new edition is ideal for textbook adoptions at the graduate level and is destined to become an essential reference for research and development teams in the semiconductor industry.
Customer Reviews:
Essential text.......2006-07-08
This is an essential text for engineers, scientists, and graduate students working in the semiconductor field. It contains a thorough review of all major electrical, optical, and physical characterization methods that are commonly used. Descriptions of techniques are generally conceptually oriented, clearly stated, and do not rely excessively on equations. In addition, many useful figures are included to help explain concepts when introduced. Up to date references are included for essentially every technique mentioned.
Great reference.......2004-05-18
Schroder has compiled an extensive and very nearly complete guide to modern characterization techniques that apply mostly to semiconductors and solid state devices, but also to techniques used in general materials analysis. We used this text in a graduate level course in EE and found it easy to read through and concise for use as a quick reference. Well worth the money.
Semiconductor Material and Device Characterization.......2000-06-14
This book offers an outstanding review of various techniques of semiconductor device processing. It is the type of book that is an invaluable reference to the device engineer. It's breadth is outstanding.

Hiro.......2006-02-04
I live in Japan and have been working on development of semiconductor process technology for ten years. First, I bought the Dr. Grove in Japanese edition when graduate student ,and have been making the best of it , which made me again buy this English edition through amazon.com.(The English edition is not available in Japan)
This book begins with an introduction of process technology(Epitaxy, Oxidation, Diffusion) and followed by the device technology, while all other textbooks begins with device technology of transistor such as pn junction, MOS physics ,Bipolar Physics. This is because, I think, Dr.Grove puts a great importance on process technology and I never read this book again and again without finding something new and important in the chapter 1,2,3 on the solid state technology.
This book is worth while buying and , I recommend that semiconductor-bound students should study this.
A classic book everybody in this area should have.......2003-03-17
Very systematic way to develop the theory. Easy to read. I read a few newer books in this field, no one even comes close to this classic book in terms of the treatment of the basic theory.
Great Book.......2001-09-15
Detailed treatment of Semiconductor Physics. A classic book in this field and a excellent source of reference for any Electrical Engineer.
A bible for device engineers and researchers.......2000-04-07
This book is one of the early written books dealing with silicon device physics. I use it every day in my research work since it provides a comprehensive theory of the semiconductor devices. It also provides a good explanation of the physical mechanisms involved in these devices. Everybody working in the electronics field, from device engineers to circuit designers, should have this book in his library.

Book Description
This book is an introduction to the physical principles of modern semiconductor devices and their advanced fabrication technology. It begins with a brief historical review of major devices and key technologies and is then divided into three sections: semiconductor material properties, physics of semiconductor devices and processing technology to fabricate these semiconductor devices.
Customer Reviews:
Reference book yes... but thats about it .......2007-09-18
As a undergrad electrical engineering student I found this book a horrible choice for an introductory level semiconductor class. As another reviewer mentioned, the example problems (the most important part of any textbook) are few and far between. Most of the book is filled with equations and derivations that are overwhelming and confusing. Clearly the author is well versed in the physics of semiconductor devices; however, the presentation of the information leaves any student reader overwhelmed. Maybe this book makes a handy reference, but only after you have been exposed to the material. As for me, I'll be replacing S.M. Sze's "Semiconductor Devices Physics and Technology" 2nd Ed with something that makes more sense for a student.
Review.......2007-03-13
I found it quite good, there are some things better treated in the last version.
Nice Book from Dedicated Author.......2006-02-19
The bible of semiconductor intended for under-/graduate students or as reference for advance scientist is the market of the author. The book consists of basic band gap explanation and carrier transport phenomena going through almost all exploited devices applied nowadays. Beside that, the technology starting form epitaxial growth until the etching mechanism is enclosed here. Moreover, the need of equation derivation is also appended herein since the author tries to explain them in deep.
Some devices,e.g BARITT, TRAPATT are not explained here. The photonic device are coped in a concise clear way including the solar cell.
The presentation and pictures attached here is well depicted and really helps the reader to the understanding of the material completely. Furthermore, this book is also well-suited for crash course for some experienced readers.
Excellent Basic Introduction for Engineers.......2003-07-12
This is a welcome 2nd edition of Sze's basic introduction to the technology underlying modern conventional semiconductor devices. The first edition of 1985 served the needs of its time admirably, but the 17 years since have seen much progress in the field, especially in the area of fabrication technology.
It should be stressed that this text is an introductory text, covering the basics well, but not taking the material much beyond the intermediate level. It is also very much an engineering text rather than a physics text, for the focus is squarely placed on the technology and not the underlying solid-state physics. As such, it is suited to undergraduate electrical/electronic engineers wishing to gain some appreciation of the physics underpinning conventional semiconductor devices, and the way they are fabricated, or for physicists wishing to gain some perspective on the fabrication and operation of the same, but it is in no way a comprehensive textbook on semiconductor physics.
Nevertheless, the material that is presented is well chosen, and well explained. The English prose style is somewhat pedestrian, but this is no great flaw in an engineering textbook. All the essentials of semiconductor materials (almost exclusively Si and GaAs) are described, the p-n junction, as well as the major device types (BJTs, (MOS/MES)FETs, microwave diodes, LEDs, lasers, etc.) and the modern technologies employed for their fabrication. In some senses, the section on fabrication technologies, taking up fully a third of the book, is perhaps its best section, for fabrication is rarely given such emphasis (although, again, not detailed, but covering most salient points) in an introductory book.
The pedagogical method employed by Sze is sound, and relevant worked examples are provided. The only short-coming is perhaps the relative brevity of the end-of-chapter problems, for which no answers are provided, but, in such a textbook, I feel that it is not really necessary to work through them to gain a solid grasp of the material presented.
Physically, the book is much more attractive than the previous edition. The cover is more appealling, and the text is well set in a two-colour print. The diagrams are nothing special, but they are generally clear and explain their point well, and are certainly much improved from the first edition, especially those in the fabrication section.
Just a final comment on other reviews: it is difficult to see how this book may be regarded as a bible of any sort, for the material is covered in quite a superficial manner. I wonder if they are not mistaking it for the 'big Sze', viz., Sze's 'Physics of Semiconductor Devices', which is another, much larger and more comprehensive, work of Sze's.
Recommended as a reference book.......2001-12-18
This is a good book providing the most important references in the field of semiconductors devices and technology. As a text book it is hard to follow and gives little scientific background regarding the physics of processes in semiconductors and structures design criteria. However, it provides a wonderful summary of the most important facts related to the devices and their derivatives, including valuable data on the common materials in use.
