Book Description
The book is aimed at graduate students, researchers, engineers and physicists involved in fluid computations. An up-to-date account is given of the present state of the art of numerical methods employed in computational fluid dynamics. The underlying numerical principles are treated with a fair amount of detail, using elementary methods. Attention is given to the difficulties arising from geometric complexity of the flow domain. Uniform accuracy for singular perturbation problems is studied, pointing the way to accurate computation of flows at high Reynolds number. Unified methods for compressible and incompressible flows are discussed. A treatment of the shallow-water equations is included. A basic introduction is given to efficient iterative solution methods. Many pointers are given to the current literature, facilitating further study.

hi all,
this book is not appropriate for the beginners to CFD so i don't recommend it for the instructors who are looking for a introduction book. The tensor notation is also not easy to grasp for the not experienced. Besides the language of the book is not clear and not enough to let the reader apply without referring to another book. This is probably because the book has covered a lot of CFD concepts so deep explanation on every item is not provided.
However I would recommend this book for experienced CFD'ers since it covers many concepts and it can be used as a good referring material.
Book Description
This book gives an introduction to the basic theory of stochastic calculus and its applications. Examples are given throughout the text, in order to motivate and illustrate the theory and show its importance for many applications in e.g. economics, biology and physics. The basic idea of the presentation is to start from some basic results (without proofs) of the easier cases and develop the theory from there, and to concentrate on the proofs of the easier case (which nevertheless are often sufficiently general for many purposes) in order to be able to reach quickly the parts of the theory which is most important for the applications. For the 6th edition the author has added further exercises and, for the first time, solutions to many of the exercises are provided.

A very good book!.......2007-07-05
I read this book after I had read Karatzas' and Shreve's book "Stochastic Calculus..." and it is probably better to do it the other way round. The mathematical prerequisites are not high, however a good intuitive understanding of measure theory is probably necessary. The pace of the book is leasurely, the proofs are such, that pencil and paper is rarely needed, however no rigor is lost.
The book quickly moves to interesting applications of the theory, which is motivated very well.
It contains a few typographical errors, mostly in the last chapter, and mostly of a harmless nature.
With the necessary mathematical background, it seems to be an ideal introduction to this highly interesting topic of stochastic differential equations!
Excellent introduction on Stochastic Differential Equations.......2007-05-08
A well written book in Mathematics
Stochastic Differential Equations is a branch of mathematics. This book is not just for financial derivatives analysis or modeling. Oksendal first introduces the subject by raising a few stochastic problems (population growth; electric charge in RLC circuit; filtering problems, Dirichlet problems; asset management; optimal portfolio and options pricing) in the first chapter. The subsequent chapters develop notions and techniques which are able to solve wide varieties of stochastic problems (not just those mentioned in the first chapters). The arrangement is impressive in particular for readers who have no previous knowledge about the subject. The readers at least know the target for developing the techniques and would not lose the way when manipulating tons of symbols. Hints and answers to selected problems are invaluable to students for self-study.
To achieve a sound background on stochastic equations is extremely important especially in quantitative finance. It is not an easy job however. QF students may consider going through this book before seriously take Shreve's books on Stochastic Calculus for Finance.
OK intro to stochastic analysis.......2007-03-14
This is a standard work (it is the one I read when I first started looking at this sort of thing) but having taken it off the shelf recently again, I think it is overrated, for several reasons.
First, it is very notation heavy - TeX has seduced Mr. Oksendahl into all sorts of bad habits - I can very easily imagine that the earlier editions (mine is the 5th), which were written with a typewriter, are much more readable.
Second, the proofs are very formal, developed mostly in terms of classical functional analysis (square integrable real functions, geometry of real Hilbert spaces etc.). From the point of view of rigor this is fine, but from the point of view of intuition, not so much, esp. when combined with the heavyweight notation. In fact note that unless you have a decent background in functional analysis, of the sort you are more likely to pick up in a mathematics degree than a finance degree, then you are going to get precisely nowhere with this book.
I don't want to be too negative, and there is lots of good stuff here - just to warn that Oksendahl is not (as one might think) a royal road to the theory of SDEs (depressingly, it may be that Oksendahl is, nevertheless, the best of the bunch out there - it is certainly, all criticism not-withstanding, more accessible than Karatzas and Shreve).
Very good book - would not mind more on finance.......2007-02-08
Very good book. However the math prerequisite is at quite a high level. Especially the probability theory introduction could be a little less fast-paced. As my main interest was on the financial application I would not have minded a little more on that topic and a little less on e.g. filtering or stochatsic control in return.
good intro book.......2006-02-03
This is a good intro book. It brings you really fast to Ito's Formula and SDE. Somebody said that the Kolmogorov's backward eq in chapter 8 is wrong. This is false, it is just expressed in a different way than the usual form. However, with a change of time, you are all set.

This book presents written versions of the eight lectures given during the AMS Short Course held at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in Washington, D.C. The objective of this course was to share with the scientific community the many exciting mathematical challenges arising from the new field of quantum computation and quantum information science. The course was geared toward demonstrating the great breadth and depth of this mathematically rich research field. Interrelationships with existing mathematical research areas were emphasized as much as possible. Moreover, the course was designed so that participants with little background in quantum mechanics would, upon completion, be prepared to begin reading the research literature on quantum computation and quantum information science.
Based on audience feedback and questions, the written versions of the lectures have been greatly expanded, and supplementary material has been added. The book features an overview of relevant parts of quantum mechanics with an introduction to quantum computation, including many potential quantum mechanical computing devices; introduction to quantum algorithms and quantum complexity theory; in-depth discussion on quantum error correcting codes and quantum cryptography; and finally, exploration into diverse connections between quantum computation and various areas of mathematics and physics.

An invitation!.......2002-10-05
The book represents a very accessible invitation to some of the essential aspects of quantum computation. While the emphasis is on the mathematical side of the subject, several of the chapters cover the connections to physics and computer science as well. The editor is also one of the authors (of several chapters in the book.--Very nice ones!) The other authors include Peter Shor(an introduction), Dan Gottesman(quantum error correction), Alex Kitaev(quantum codes), U. Vazirani(quantum complexity), and Louis Kauffman(quantum topology). The book is great both for selfstudy and for a beginning course, and it is enjoyable reading.

An Excellent Introductory Coursebook.......2000-11-02
Chaisson and McMillan have succeeded in creating a textbook that works on many levels. First of all, the book makes a true effort to excite students about astronomy, as it starts out immediately with a view of the universe and its massive size. Secondly, the book is approachable, with optional "more precisely" sections that cover things in detail or with more mathematics. Finally, the book challenges a college student while still being accessible to bright middle-school students (I first used it at a summer camp, the Center for Talented Youth, and the entire class used the book to great success). In addition to the natural merits of the writing, which is wonderful, and a moderate amount of history, the book includes stunning pictures and a CD-ROM that contains the entire text of the book, animations, and all of the images. It's a superb way to have the contents anywhere you need them, and look at things in greater detail. This book should be highly recommended for educators, and I highly encourage them to give it a try and to use it in their classes.

The relation between mathematics and physics has a long history, in which the role of number theory and of other more abstract parts of mathematics has recently become more prominent.
More than ten years after a first meeting in 1989 between number theorists and physicists at the Centre de Physique des Houches, a second 2-week event focused on the broader interface of number theory, geometry, and physics.

Over the next decade or two, an impressive array of scientific instruments at the Tevatron, RHIC (Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider) and LHC (Large Hadron collider), LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational Observatory) and SDSS (Sloan Digital Sky Survey), to name a few, will usher in the most comprehensive program of study of the fundamental forces of nature and the structure of the universe. Major discoveries are anticipated. But, it is our conviction that the pace of discoveries will be severely impeded unless a concerted effort is made to deploy and employ advanced computing techniques to handle, process and analyze the unprecedented amounts of data.
The workshop followed four main tracks: Artificial Intelligence (neural networks and other adaptive multivariate methods); Innovative Software Algorithms and Tools; Symbolic Problem Solving; and Very Large Scale Computing. The workshop covered applications in high energy physics, astrophysics, accelerator physics and nuclear physics.
Topics included are:
uses of C++ in scientific computing, large scale simulations, advanced analysis environments, worldwide computing; artificial intelligence: online application of neural networks, applications in data analysis, theoretical aspects innovative software algorithms and tools: online monitoring and controls, physics analysis and reconstruction algorithms, pattern recognition techniques, common libraries, grid and distributed computing techniques; symbolic problem solving: Freynman diagram algorithms and tools, symbolic manipulation via function objects, symbolic techniques for Feynman diagrams, multi-loop calculations and results. very large scale computing: online monitoring and controls, analysis farms and DAQ systems, grid architectures

Our knowledge of objects of algebraic geometry such as moduli of curves, (real) Schubert classes, fundamental groups of complements of hyperplane arrangements, toric varieties, and variation of Hodge structures, has been enhanced recently by ideas and constructions of quantum field theory, such as mirror symmetry, Gromov-Witten invariants, quantum cohomology, and gravitational descendants.
These are some of the themes of this refereed collection of papers, which grew out of the special session, "Enumerative Geometry in Physics," held at the AMS meeting in Lowell, MA, April 2000. This session brought together mathematicians and physicists who reported on the latest results and open questions; all the abstracts are included as an Appendix, and also included are papers by some who could not attend.
The collection provides an overview of state-of-the-art tools, links that connect classical and modern problems, and the latest knowledge available.
