Book Description

In this first comprehensive introduction to the main ideas and techniques of quantum computation and information, Michael Nielsen and Isaac Chuang ask the question: What are the ultimate physical limits to computation and communication? They detail such remarkable effects as fast quantum algorithms, quantum teleportation, quantum cryptography and quantum error correction. A wealth of accompanying figures and exercises illustrate and develop the material in more depth. They describe what a quantum computer is, how it can be used to solve problems faster than familiar "classical" computers, and the real-world implementation of quantum computers. Their book concludes with an explanation of how quantum states can be used to perform remarkable feats of communication, and of how it is possible to protect quantum states against the effects of noise.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Still the Best Overview on Quantum Computing.......2007-03-02

This is an excellent book about a topic which becomes more important
with each passing month. It is written at a graduate level, such that
you really need to have had a college-level quantum mechanics course,
or equivalent. Most of the book uses bracket notation.

3 out of 5 stars Complete, but sloppy.......2007-02-08

This is absolutely the standard introductory text to quantum information and quantum computation. Nielsen and Chuang certainly covered all the basis, and tried to give a self contained book including many reviews of related topics in the appendices. The main complain about the book is that some times it is sloppy, making hard to grasp the concepts. In some parts of the book there are even grammatical errors. My advice, get it, read it, but be very careful.

4 out of 5 stars Complete and didactical.......2007-01-03

It is a book for specialists. In order to fully appreciate the contents you should have a physics, maths or computation science diploma. It contains a good introduction on Quantum mechanics, but for people that have already assited an introductory course on the field. Concerning the main subject: quantum computation, this book is the most complete review of the field and also suitable for a course on QC.

4 out of 5 stars Good book.......2006-03-25

The book is good and gives you a general view of quantum information and computation. However, the size of the book disencourages beginners to read it.

5 out of 5 stars An essential text.......2005-06-17

Despite its age, I keep coming back to this text for the careful prose and knowledgeable authors; so much so that I am ordering the hardback edition, having worn out the binding of the paperback edition. It is both a book to learn from and one to refer to later. It will eventually be outdated, but I don't see this as having happened yet. Although a large book, it is not bulked out like some, containing a lot of useful and relevant material. Perhaps not the text for those setting out from a 'cold start', but then a great follow up to 'The Quest for Quantum Computing" by Julian Brown. Not overtly rigorous, which is to its credit, as the concepts remain clear as a result. Certainly an essential text, where the prose does not get in the way. A very readable book about a very exciting subject, that is sure to deliver to the determined reader.

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

This book contains alot of very good technical reference for the design of cams. A strong grasp of calculus is necessary to make this reference worth while (not for the mathematically weak). Most focus is upon radial style cams. Other styles are touched upon (barrel, cylinder, Scotch) but not alot of detail. The reader must make their own design inferences. Most all the formulas work. Overall, a very good book.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Book.......2001-10-30

Independent Component Analysis is a young and interesting topic that gained attention and still receiving more of it.

Until now this is the best introduction that has been written.
It is comprehensive, clear and unbiased.

I think that the book is a step toward making the subject not only a common field of research but also a reference for those looking for new challenging topics.

What worths mentioning is that the authors are very envolved in the development of the theory of ICA ,other books are good but are deviated by their author's own approachs and this is normal but unhealthy for a first book on any field.

What constitutes a great help for understanding ICA are the relatively easy concepts if one just intend to pick an algorithm(ex:FastICA), but this is not the case regarding its theory.

One colleague once argued that ICA should have emerged long before the begining of the 90's, claiming that Gaussian forms
(Central Limit-Theorem) killed the idea of dealing with other kinds of distributions and therefore the signal processing community went assuming every thing was gaussian (noise was gaussian, signals are gaussian),but the emerge of HOS relaxed the gaussian restriction and ICA became possible and no longer 'blind' .

I think this should prepare researchers to deal with coming challengs more intelligently and efficiently .That is why I recommend this book since it tries to give a broad view to the subject .

5 out of 5 stars Nice and detailed description of ICA.......2001-10-27

This is a nice and self-contained book on the subject of independent component analysis (ICA). The authors start with relevant mathematical and statistical background (in Part I) to prepare readers for the derivations of ICA (though seasoned researchers may want to skip the first part of this book). The authors discuss the motivation behind ICA and present several ways to derive ICA (since this subject has been approached by several communities). The authors also compare and discuss the pros and cons of these approaches. The authors discuss several applications using ICA in Part III.

Compared with other ICA books, this manuscript has much depth and completeness. I highly recommend this book to any reader interested in this topic.

    Book Description

New technologies in engineering, physics and biomedicine are demanding increasingly complex methods of digital signal processing. By presenting the latest research work the authors demonstrate how real-time recurrent neural networks (RNNs) can be implemented to expand the range of traditional signal processing techniques and to help combat the problem of prediction. Within this text neural networks are considered as massively interconnected nonlinear adaptive filters.

Ø Analyses the relationships between RNNs and various nonlinear models and filters, and introduces spatio-temporal architectures together with the concepts of modularity and nesting

Ø Examines stability and relaxation within RNNs

Ø Presents on-line learning algorithms for nonlinear adaptive filters and introduces new paradigms which exploit the concepts of a priori and a posteriori errors, data-reusing adaptation, and normalisation

Ø Studies convergence and stability of on-line learning algorithms based upon optimisation techniques such as contraction mapping and fixed point iteration

Ø Describes strategies for the exploitation of inherent relationships between parameters in RNNs

Ø Discusses practical issues such as predictability and nonlinearity detecting and includes several practical applications in areas such as air pollutant modelling and prediction, attractor discovery and chaos, ECG signal processing, and speech processing

Recurrent Neural Networks for Prediction offers a new insight into the learning algorithms, architectures and stability of recurrent neural networks and, consequently, will have instant appeal. It provides an extensive background for researchers, academics and postgraduates enabling them to apply such networks in new applications.

5 out of 5 stars I should buy it in 2001........2007-09-19

I give this book 5 stars. It is a must have book, very well written. It has good balance between rigorous theory and authors reasonong regarding the subject.
I'm not a beginner in this field, and still I found a lot of interesting ideas, that can help not only to improve quality of the net, but also make you see "bigger picture".

5 out of 5 stars Unexpected insights that make you go: "Aha!".......2001-11-28

"Recurrent Neural Networks for Prediction: Learning Algorithms,
Architectures and Stability," approaches the field of recurrent neural networks from both a practical and a theoretical perspective. Starting from the fundamentals, where unexpected insights are offered even at the level of the dynamical richness of simple neurons, the authors describe many existing algorithms and gradually introduce novel ones. The latter are convicingly shown to yield better prediction performances than traditional approaches, when applied to real-world data. They also dedicate a considerable amount of time on the (practical) issue of nonlinearity analysis of time series, which is or should be, indeed, the cradle of all proper modelling and/or filtering solutions: nonlinearity should be assessed prior to choosing the appropriate model and/or filters, since linear ones are to be preferred if sufficient for the problem. I would recommend this book to any researcher who is active in the field of recurrent neural networks and time series analysis, but also to researchers who are new in the field, since the book offers an extensive overview of the current state-of-the-art approaches.

    Product Description

This book represents several decades of data collection, research, conversations with different airframe specialists, plus the author's more than twenty years' experience in airframe structural design. From structural standpoint, the book is intended to be used as a tool to help achieve structural integrity according to government regulations, specifications, criteria, etc., for designing commercial or military transports, military fighters, as well as general aviation aircraft. It can be considered as a troubleshooting guide for airline structural maintenance and repair engineers or as a supplementary handbook in teaching aircraft structural design in college. This book is divided into a total of sixteen chapter and emphasizes itemized write-ups, tables, graphs and illustrations to lead directly to points of interest. The data can be used for designing and sizing airframe structures and, wherever needed, example calculations are presented for clarification.

3 out of 5 stars A decent reference book on Airframe Structures.......2007-01-28

I think Mr. Niu's textbook provides a good discussion on the basic and fundamental knowledge required by the Structures engineer. It should be particularly helpful for the engineer new to the field. I did come across a few errors, but I have not noticed the myriad of errata that was rumoured. The text does not contain the depth of discussion on Structures/stress analysis that I wanted, like the industry-standard Bruhn, however the figures, charts, examples, and pictures are much clearer, and henceforth put things into perspective much better. This text, combined with Bruhn, gives me the reference material I need to perform my stress analysis tasks.

4 out of 5 stars Niu, Airframe Structural Design, 2nd Ed. - Review.......2006-08-16

Micahael Niu has filled a void that has existed since E.F. Bruhn last published his book thirty years ago. I recommend all of Niu's books, and this one is no exception. It is full of design details and recommendations that are difficult if not impossible to obtain without extensive experience in many companies. It is a book to be studied, however, not simply glanced at. The practicing designer should do well to periodically re-visit this book before undertaking a new assignment.

Unlike his other books on stress analysis, this is a design reference only, with few examples of calculations that provide further insight into the reasons for the design recommendations provided. It is thus a complementary book, and a good addition to any aircraft reference library.

1 out of 5 stars This book creates a vacuum.......2003-02-15

Used this book in structures I. Might be a fair reference....students.......don't bother with this one.

4 out of 5 stars Good book for aerospace engineers.......2002-04-22

This book is really well done, it has everything you ever
wanted to know about sizing an airplane... it has helped
me in my Airframe Structure class + project.
One thing though: beware that there are many errors
(typos and calculations) in the book.

3 out of 5 stars Fire the proof editor!.......2001-09-05

The first edition has so many errors, typo and otherwise, that I believe the author and his publishers rushed without proper proofreading just to get it printed and out the door so they could start selling it. The content is very much the same as Niu's other book, Airframe Structural Design, except the chapter arrangements. Nevertheless, the worked-out problems are very helpful and practical and make this book valuable.

2 out of 5 stars Review of Vector Mechanics for Engineers.......2003-12-10

This book is written with the assumption the reader understands statics prior to using this text. The author states repeatedly throughout the text that somewhat difficult ideas are obvious, and gives no further explanation as to the derrivation of his conclusions; often leaving the reader more lost than they started.
Sample problems are well laid out, yet do not prepare you for the level of understanding required for homework problems at the end of each chapter.
This book was used in a Sophomore college class and left the class feeling unprepared for subsequent Engineering courses requiring a firm understanding of this subject.
Altogether this book should not be used as a first attempt to understand statics unless the user has prior knowledge of statics.

      Book Description

In the quantum world, a particle can behave like a wave and accordingly seems to be in two places at the same time. This of course is contradictory to our daily experiences with classical particles. How then should this be understood? What happens in the transitional area between the classical world and quantum mechanics? The present book answers exciting questions like these in a way that is easy to follow and to understand and is shows that the link between these two worlds will have concrete and applied effects on our daily life in the near future. It will, for example, improve and change the conventional methods of information processing. With the help of quantum cryptography, it will be possible to communicate tap-proof. Using quantum computers we will be able to solve highly complicated problems in a very short time.

        Book Description

This book offers a concise and up-to-date introduction to the popular field of quantum information. It has originated in a series of invited lecture courses at various universities in different countries. This is reflected in its informal style of exposition and presentation of key results in
the subject. In addition to treating quantum communication, entanglement and algorithms in great depth, this book also addresses a number of interesting miscellaneous topics, such as Maxwell's demon, Landauer's erasure, the Bekenstein bound and Caratheodory's treatment of the Second law of
thermodyanmics. All mathematical derivations are based on clear physical pictures which make even the most involved results--such as the Holevo bound-- look comprehensible and transparent. The book is ideal as a first introduction to the subject, but may also appeal to the specialist due to its
        unique presentation.
