Turbulence: The Legacy of A. N. Kolmogorov
ASIN: 0198529481 |
Book Description
Based on a taught by the author at the University of Cambridge, this comprehensive text on turbulence and fluid dynamics is aimed at year 4 undergraduates and graduates in applied mathematics, physics, and engineering, and provides an ideal reference for industry professionals and researchers. It bridges the gap between elementary accounts of turbulence found in undergraduate texts and more rigorous accounts given in monographs on the subject. Containing many examples, the author combines the maximum of physical insight with the minimum of mathematical detail where possible. The text is highly illustrated throughout, and includes colour plates; required mathematical techniques are covered in extensive appendices. The text is divided into three parts: Part I consists of a traditional introduction to the classical aspects of turbulence, the nature of turbulence, and the equations of fluid mechanics. Mathematics is kept to a minimum, presupposing only an elementary knowledge of fluid mechanics and statistics. Part II tackles the problem of homogeneous turbulence with a focus on describing the phenomena in real space. Part III covers certain special topics rarely discussed in introductory texts. Many geophysical and astrophysical flows are dominated by the effects of body forces, such as buoyancy, Coriolis and Lorentz forces. Moreover, certain large-scale flows are approximately two-dimensional and this has led to a concerted investigation of two-dimensional turbulence over the last few years. Both the influence of body forces and two-dimensional turbulence are discussed.

what a good book but poor choice in typesetting.......2006-09-21
a book covering many interesting topics and i believe a student of turbulence will be very well-equiped in the basics of modern understandings of turbulence after reading this book. but what a poor page layout. the fonts are small and the book undoubtedly is bulkier because so much space is wasted on the wide margins! i think i had read somewhere that these margins would make the book a good study tools. readers can write on them. what nonsense! they could have just used a conventional layout, save plenty of pages and reading it would be better for my eyes. i can write notes and work out the equations, etc, on some notepad i have. i think it worths minusing two stars for the layout. you can say i judge this book by its font size.
A good book for graduate students .......2006-03-11
This text is well-written and presents a lot of advanced material in relatively short order. However, the mathematics involved are quite advanced and the book is certainly intended only for people with some background in fluids - it is far from an "introductory" text!
Excellent Book.......2005-01-21
This book is really great! The complex things in turbulence are explained in that way I've never seen it before. There are a lot of great figures that are explaining a lot of things - for example, vorticity dynamics is followed with great pictures. Main topic of this book is physical aspect of turbulence, and that's great.
If you're dealing (better to say coping) with turbulence in some way, you should have this book - specially if you're a novice in this area.

Book Description
Although dynamical mechanical analysis or spectroscopy has left the domain of the rheologist and has become a prevalent tool in the analytical laboratory, it is still common to hear, "What is DMA, and what will it tell me?" or "I think I could use a DMA, but I cannot justify its cost." Previously, the novice in the field had to sort through texts on thermal analysis, rheology, and materials science just to find basic information - until now. This book provides the chemist, chemical engineer, or materials scientist with a starting point to understand the applications of dynamic mechanical analysis, its workings, and its advantages and limitations. Discussions include: · rheological concepts · stress-strain · data handling · experimental techniques and considerations · test methods, such as frequency sweeps and time-temperature curves · data analysis
Customer Reviews:
It may help yr experiment.......2006-07-03
The clear text will guide my experiment in composites.
The DMA technique may be helpful on several materials dynamic-mechanical characterization and this book introduces the why and how to.
Good investment to my thesis!
What I needed, when I needed it.......2001-09-27
I needed to get up to speed on DMA fast and I got what I needed. It didn't provide all the info I required for my specific application (submicron thin films) but it did provide a sound foundation for further investigation. This is truly what it claims to be, a practical introduction, many thanks to the author.
Finally! The Book That Spells Out The Answers To Questions........2000-02-09
I spent many hours researching for a Thermal Mechanical textbook that was packed full of "Get Down To The Point Answers". Let's face it, there are not many current Thermal Analysis textbooks for sale. The books I've seen are too scrambled with no understanding at the end. This book was VERY informative, and it answered my questions. Special Thanks to the author. Please write many more books with the same intentions in mind: "We would like to understand and learn from what we read"! Thank You!

I ordered this book based on the other review here onamazon.com and was looking for a bit more. A fair bit of the contentis already covered by free application notes on the web and sales literature that the makers of DMA instrumentation pass out for free. If your looking for a solid treatment of the polymer physics of DMA testing, that's not this book; maybe it hasn't been written yet. If you just want to relate DMA testing to real world environments and effects, then there aren't enough good examples in the book or a method to make this book worth the price.
This would make an acceptable guide for a technician who was just introduced to a DMA - I was looking for more.

Book Description
This is a textbook for advanced undergraduate and first-year graduate students in mechanical, aerospace, and chemical engineering. The book emphasizes understanding CFD through physical principles and examples. The author follows a consistent philosophy of control volume formulation of the fundamental laws of fluid motion and energy transfer, and introduces a novel notion of 'smoothing pressure correction' for solution of flow equations on collocated grids within the framework of the well-known SIMPLE algorithm. The subject matter is developed by considering pure conduction/diffusion, convective transport in 2-dimensional boundary layers and in fully elliptic flow situations and phase-change problems in succession. The book includes chapters on discretization of equations for transport of mass, momentum and energy on Cartesian, structured curvilinear and unstructured meshes, solution of discretised equations, numerical grid generation and convergence enhancement. Practicing engineers will find this particularly useful for reference and for continuing education.

Fantastic introductory treatment of CFD.......2007-04-27
This book is a must-read for any practicing engineer who needs to come up to speed on the basic techniques of CFD quickly. It provides enough information for one to start writing code to model operating equipment with confidence. A second excellent book on this topic is referred to by Date as well: "Numerical Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow" by Patankar.
Excellent book for both students and practitioners.......2005-10-18
During my final year project in CFD at IIT, I went through a number of books on Introduction to the topic. Among all of them, I think this is the best book from the point of view of students. This is an exceptional book for an introductory course in CFD. This book helps a student make the transition from analytical solutions to numerical methods easier. A lot of books on the subject tend to lose the physics part and divert to numerical analysis totally. To familiarize the reader with grid generation, both structured and unstructured grids have been covered in detail. Sufficient example code has also been provided in the appendix.

Book Description
This book is an introduction to the application of nonlinear dynamics to problems of stability, chaos and turbulence arising in continuous media and their connection to dynamical systems. With an emphasis on the understanding of basic concepts, it should be of interest to nearly any science-oriented undergraduate and potentially to anyone who wants to learn about recent advances in the field of applied nonlinear dynamics. Technicalities are, however, not completely avoided. They are instead explained as simply as possible using heuristic arguments and specific worked examples.

Book Description
This book is an informal introduction to the turbulence of fluids. The emphasis is placed on turbulence as a physical phenomenon. It addresses the unresolved issues, misconceptions, controversies, and major problems of the turbulence of fluids rather than the conventional formalistic elements and models. Little use is made of complicated formalisms; instead the emphasis is placed on an essentially informal qualitative form. The scope of the book is focused on the purely basic aspects of the turbulent flows of incompressible fluids.
This book will certainly be of interest and use to graduate students as well as scientists active in fields where the turbulence of fluids is of importance. The book is intentionally written to appeal to a broad readership with the aim of making the turbulence of fluids interesting and comprehensible to the interested engineer.
