Book Description

The book is an introductory text to the physics of Bose-Einstein condensation. This phenomenon, first predicted by Einstein in 1925, has been realized experimentally in 1995 in a remarkable series of experiments whose importance has been recognized by the award of the 2001 Nobel Prize in Physics. The condensate is actually a new state of matter, where quantum-mechanical wave functions of atoms behave as coherent matter waves in the same way as coherent light waves in the case of a laser. The authors provide a theoretical presentation of the main concepts underlying the physics of dilute atomic gases in conditions of extremely low temperatures where quantum effects play a crucial role. The main effort is devoted to discussion of the relevant theoretical aspects exhibited by these systems, such as the concept of order parameter, long range order, superfluidity and coherence. The mathematical formalism is presented in a form convenient for practical use. The book develops the theory of Bose gases starting from the pioneering Bogoliubov approach and gives special emphasis to the new physical features exhibited by non-uniform gases which are produced in the recent experiments with magnetic and optical traps. These features include the determination of the equilibrium profiles, the collective oscillations, the mechanism of the expansion of the gas after releasing the trap, the interference patterns obtained by overlapping two condensates, the rotational properties revealing the effects of superfluidity (quantized vortices, behaviour of the moment of inertia), the Josephson-like phenomena associated with the coherence of the phase, the beyond mean field phenomena exhibited by quantum gases in conditions of reduced dimensionality (1D and 2D) etc. The book also discusses the analogies and differences with the physics of "classical" superfluids like liquid helium and introduces some of the major features of trapped Fermi gases at low temperature, pointing out the consequences of superfluidity.

4 out of 5 stars Concise slick book. Good but not great. .......2005-03-07

This is not an easy book to read. It starts off with field theory and assumes a lot of knowledge, especially from Landau's books on fluid mechanics and statitstical physics. The format of the writing is concise, almost journal publication style. Chapter 14 on angular momentum and vortices is very slick and hard to follow. Chapter's 7 and 8 on response theory and 4He introduce a lot of notation and constructs without definition or motivation. Their discussion of mean field theory in BEC, derivation of the Gross-Pitaevskii from the operator formalism, and discussion of Fermi gases is clearer than in the BEC book by Pethick and Smith. There is also a discussion of optical lattices and low dimensions that is not discussed in Pethick and Smith. The other standard topics such as dynamics of a BEC in a harmonic trap are covered better in Pethick and Smith. Cooling is not discussed in this book.

    Book Description

Three subjects of major interest are contained in this textbook: Linear elasticity, mechanics of structures in linear isotropic elasticity, and nonlinear mechanics including computational algorithms. Engineering and mathematics are in a reasonable balance: After the simplest possible, intuitive approach follows the mathematical formulation and analysis. Computational methods occupy a good portion of the book. There are several worked out problems in each chapter and additional exercises at the end of the book. Very often, mathematical expressions are given in more than one notation. The book is intended primarily for students and practising engineers in mechanical and civil engineering. Most of them will be faced with problems of advanced materials and should have a correct understanding of the basic ideas even if they use software to solve them. Students or experts from applied mathematics, materials science and other related fields will also find it useful.

      Book Description

This treatise attempts to portray the ideas and general principles of the theory of materials within the framework of phenomenological continuum mechanics. It is a well-written mathematical introduction to classical continuum mechanics and deals with concepts such as elasticity, plasticity, viscoelasticity and viscoplasticity in nonlinear materials. The aim of a general theory of material behaviour is to provide a classified range of possibilities from which a user can select the constitutive model that applies best. The book will be invaluable to graduate students of materials science in engineering and in physics. The new edition includes additional analytical methods in the classical theory of viscoelasticity. This leads to a new theory of finite linear viscoelasticity of incompressible isotropic materials. Anisotropic viscoplasticity is completely reformulated and extended to a general constitutive theory that covers crystal plasticity as a special case.

        Book Description

The interest in membranes and higher dimensional extended geometrical objects was inspired by the great successes of the string and superstring, first in 1968-73 as a theory of hadrons and then since 1984 as a "theory of everything" - a unified theory of all interactions, including quantum gravity. In particular, membranes, "supermembranes" and "spinning membranes" have been studied since 1985; an unexpected connection with supergravity opened in 1988 some new prospects for a quantized theory. General theorems about higher dimensional "p-branes" or "extendons" were also derived. The subject is very promising, whether as a more comprehensive fundamental unification or as a description of composite hadrons.

Where there are now probably some fifty texts of all kinds dealing with strings, this is the first treatise on membranes and higher dimensional extendons.

3 out of 5 stars The conceptual ideas of high school physics.......2006-02-06

Maxwell wants to explain the "fundamental doctrines of matter and motion", by which he means not formulae and calculations but rather the conceptual framework that serves to "guide the current of thought". Modern readers will not be too impressed since all of this is basically stuff that we teach to high school kids today. One should understand physics in terms of matter and forces and Newton's laws and so on. It's not all Newton, however, because physics "has now fairly entered on the next stage of progress", recognising energy as a fundamental concept. Conservation of energy "furnishes to the physical enquirer a principle on which he may hang every known law relating to physical actions, and by which he may be put in the way to discover the relations of such actions in new branches of science". So it goes. Even in the last chapter celestial mechanics is touched on not as a success of Newtonian physics in reaching insights about the world, but only as an "instructive example" of how great our conceptual framework is since it can easily accommodate the law of universal gravitation. In short, this book amounts to celebrating the first ten pages or so of the Principia while ignoring the hundreds of pages of actual physics. The publishers have added a chapter from Maxwell's Electricity and Magnetism, and appendices and notes by Larmor, quite a bit of which is on relativity theory. Both of these additions are completely out of line with the original text.

5 out of 5 stars This book is the fountainhead of modern physics.......2005-03-11

I suggest that the other reviewers completely missed the significance of Maxwell's book "Matter and Motion" as it is the fountainhead of modern physics. First, it introduces and outlines "Dimensional Analysis" which ALL physics theories MUST conform to. Dimensional Analysis is physics: Equations are maths: Units are politics. Secondly, Maxwell set the stage for Quantum Mechanics by introducing the concept that it is necessary to use statistics to model reality.

4 out of 5 stars From the horses mouth.......2001-02-11

This is how founding fathers thought and wrote about the Matter and Motion. It is a nostalgic reading. Maxwell himself wrote about Matter and Motion of course based on Newtonian Physics. You do not learn any new Physics unless you are doing study in the History of Science. Maxwell basically starts with definition of concepts in Newtonian Mechanics and explains Newton's laws of Motion. Force, Energy, Momentum all the good staff. Short book and interesting piece of history. Definitely worth reading of it for leisure or for study.

3 out of 5 stars good for the price.......1998-02-25

definitely not the best intro to newton mechanics but if you already know it and need the info in a new prespective this book will do you.NOT A SELF STUDY GUIDE.Is best when used as a review.

          Book Description

Space, Time, Matter, and Form collects ten of David Bostock's essays on themes from Aristotle's Physics, four of them published here for the first time. The first five papers look at issues raised in the first two books of the Physics, centred on notions of matter and form, and the idea of substance as what persists through change. They also range over other of Aristotle's scientific works, such as his biology and psychology and the account of change in his De Generatione et Corruptione. The volume's remaining essays examine themes in later books of the Physics, including infinity, place, time, and continuity. Bostock argues that Aristotle's views on these topics are of real interest in their own right, independent of his notions of substance, form, and matter; they also raise some pressing problems of interpretation, which these essays seek to resolve.

            Product Description

This book provides a rapid overview of the basic methods and concepts in mechanics for beginning Ph.D. students and advanced undergraduates in applied mathematics or related fields. It is based on a graduate course given in 2006-07 at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. Among other topics, the book introduces Newton's law, action principles, Hamilton-Jacobi theory, geometric wave theory, analytical and numerical statistical mechanics, discrete and continuous quantum mechanics, and quantum path-integral methods. The focus is on fundamental mathematical methods that provide connections between seemingly unrelated subjects. An example is Hamilton-Jacobi theory, which appears in the calculus of variations, in Fermat's principle of classical mechanics, and in the geometric theory of dispersive wavetrains. The material is developed in a sequence of simple examples and the book can be used in a one-semester class on classical, statistical, and quantum mechanics. Some familiarity with differential equations is required but otherwise the book is self-contained. In particular, no previous knowledge of physics is assumed. Titles in this series are copublished with the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University.

Its objective is a simple, yet fairly detailed, presentation of the basic physical properties of crystalline solids and very basic device structures such as p-n junctions and quantum wells. The emphasis is on clear and simple explanations of basic physical theory and application rather than a detailed analysis of complex devices and fabrication technology. This book offers students a body of understanding that will be of lasting usefulness rather than technology that will soon be out of date. It is designed to be user-friendly in all ways.

              4 out of 5 stars A good comprehensive book.......2001-08-09

This is a thorough and well presented book. It starts with an introduction to crystals and quantum physics so it you get all the main tools to understand solid state physics. As a matter of fact the chapters on quantum physics are exceptional. True it's somewhat a summary of any quantum physics book but it's a very good one. I used it for a one term intensive course on both quantum physics and solid state physics angling towards semiconductor physics and transistors. The author provides concise and precise explanations plus all the mathematical progression. That's where it gets slightly cumbersome and the main reason I wouldn't recommend it for self study. You pretty much need to understand the reasoning behind those equations or you won't know what it's all about. As a reference book it's wonderful because everything is there. There's no other book that deals so well with the basics tools of quantum and semiconductor physics. My only complaint is that it lacks a final chapter on transistors(both bipolar and Mos would be appreciated) that would make it a truly phenomenal book.

                Book Description

The properties of materials are altered, sometimes radically, when very high pressures are applied. This book surveys the apparatus available for high pressure studies with a particular emphasis on diamond anvil cells and related equipment. It also examines pressure measurement techniques at extreme values. A large part of the book considers the experimental needs and arrangement for studies involving the interaction of high pressures with high and low temperatures, magnetic fields, and shock waves. Optical properties, Brillouin and Raman scattering, infrared spectroscopy, eletron spin and nuclear magnetic resonance at high pressures are also covered.
