This is terrible textbook. Jackson has no idea how to present material so that you can use it to solve real world problems. He should be covered in sackcloth and ashes.

5 out of 5 stars canon.......2007-06-09

If you are a physics graduate student, you probably will encounter this book at some point. Everyone tries to pidgeonhole it: space physicist want it to focus on plasma physics, string theorists want it to focus more on field theory, etc. When you take average focus of so many disparate groups of physicists, you get the book that has actually been written! Even for a such a specialize audience. Jackson is as general as possible. I commend him for it!

5 out of 5 stars Jackson is not a pedagogical text........2007-04-13

Jackson's book is the gold standard, bar none, for *reference* textbooks on E&M. That's why you will find at least one copy in the office of every physics professor and most physics grad students in the English-speaking world. It is not and was clearly never intended to be a pedagogical device, however, so pray to your deity of choice that you have an outstanding teacher to guide you through it. You can't really call yourself a physicist unless you've slogged through it in a grad E&M class, because everybody else before you did it too. Good luck!

3 out of 5 stars A Review of "Classical Electrodynamics", Jackson, J. D. , 3rd Edition.......2007-03-14

This large book (808 pages) is an excellent text for its intended purpose, which is for classroom training of graduate-level physicists in electromagnetics. The study of magnetism and its effects is a very large one, and no single book could cover the entire field. One might perhaps divide the subject into two overlapping parts, low-frequency and high-frequency. The first covers such things as motors, actuators, solenoids (solenoidal actuators), permanent magnets, and such, where the material properties are often nonlinear and the displacement vector D of Maxwell's equations is not significant. The other, high-frequency, is the realm of this book, involving radio, microwaves, light, etc. where the displacement vector must be used and where the properties are assumed to be linear. It makes extensive use of advanced mathematics such as vector calculus, Greene's functions, spherical harmonics, Bessel functions, and the Hamiltonian. The book lightly mentions such subjects as relaxation (finite-difference), finite-element methods and eddy current effects, but discusses extensively the relationship between Einstein's theory of relativity and electromagnetics ( about a third of the book). Before buying this book, it might be best to determine that its particular emphasis fits the reader's needs.

2 out of 5 stars Classical Electrodynamics Nightmare!.......2007-03-04

This book is the hardest book I have ever encountered in my electrical engineering experience. I have to relearn the electrodynamics theory in CGS units and form the physicist perspective. Jackson is famous for his nearly impossible to solve problems as well as his abstract derivations throughout the book. At least I ended up with an A in the course after a semester's hard work.

Book Description

Quantum Kinetics in Transport and Optics of Semiconductors deals with the quantum kinetics for transport in low-dimensional microstructures and for ultrashort laser-pulse spectroscopy. The nonequilibrium Green function theory is described and used for the derivation of the quantum kinetic equations. Numerical methods for the solution of the retarded quantum kinetic equations are discussed and results are presented for quantum high-field transport and for mesoscopic transport phenomena. Quantum beats, polarization decay and non-Markovian behaviour are treated for femtosecond spectroscopy on a microscopic basis.

      Book Description

In spite of the increasing importance of microcavities, device physics or the observable phenomena in optical microcavities such as enhanced or inhibited spontaneous emission and its relation with the laser oscillation has not been systematically well-described-until now. Spontaneous Emission and Laser Oscillation in Microcavities presents the basics of optical microcavities. The volume is divided into ten chapters, each written by respected authorities in their areas. The book surveys several methods describing free space spontaneous emission and discusses changes in the feature due to the presence of a cavity. The effect of dephasing of vacuum fields on spontaneous emission in a microcavity and the effects of atomic broadening on spontaneous emission in an optical microcavity are examined. The book details the splitting in transmission peaks of planar microcavities containing semiconductor quantum wells. A simple but useful way to consider the change in the spontaneous emission rate from the viewpoint of mode density alteration by wavelength-sized cavities is provided. Authors also discuss the spontaneous emission in dielectric planar microcavities. Spontaneous emission in microcavity surface emitting lasers is covered, as are the effects of electron confinement in semiconductor quantum wells, wires, and boxes also given. The volume extends the controlling spontaneous emission phenomenon to laser oscillation. Starting from the Fermi golden rule, the microcavity laser rate equations are derived, and the oscillation characteristics are analyzed. Recent progress in optical microcavity experiments is summarized, and the applicability in massively optical parallel processing systems and demands for the device performance are explored. This volume is extremely useful as a textbook for graduate and postgraduate students and works well as a unique reference for researchers beginning to study in the field.

      Book Description

This textbook gives a comprehensive survey of the analytical treatment of MRI physics and engineering. It gives readers the background to apply MRI in medicine or design (sub)systems or sequences for new applications. Special attention is paid to the treatment of intrinsic artifacts of the different sequences, which can be described in a mathematically uniform way for the different scan methods. The book contains many images, especially showing specific properties of the different scan methods. The methods discussed include RARE, GRASE, EPI and Spiral Scan. The 2nd edition and the 3rd edition were expanded and refined. The chapter on motion and flow was expanded, and a chapter added on the configuration theory and multipulse sequences such as BURST, TSE and FFE. A.L. Luiten gives an overview of the early history of MRI imaging. The 3rd edition deals with stranger gradient and new RF coil systems, and sequences such as Balanced FFE and q-space diffusion imaging and SENSE.

4 out of 5 stars Better than expected.......2004-11-03

Not for the clinician, radiologist, or beginner MRI engineer. I agree with previous reviewer that the book resembles a set of notes, but they are excellent notes if you already know your MRI physics. The book is therefore nice to have for an overview, or reminder of a particular application (the preface *does* say "not meant for making a first acquaintance with MRI"). The images are quite acceptable (3rd ed) and well-chosen to demonstrate the ideas. Not 5 stars because the notes *are* too brief sometimes (another reviewer said shallow), making it impossible to fully understand, let alone implement, SENSE or Shinnar-LeRoux, for example, from just these notes.

4 out of 5 stars A good MRI introduction book.......2000-11-25

This is a good book for introducing MRI basics for non-experts. advanced scanning methods are discussed also. The applications section is very good and the references are valuable.

1 out of 5 stars With my full respect to the Auther of this book.......2000-10-18

Poor images,Poor Graphics and shallow content! This book is not for any proffessional in the field of clinical MRI. I can say that this book is just a collection of short notes designed for Philips engineers. The price (almost $80) of this book does not match the quality of content, the quality of images and the graphics as well ( hand drawing & illustration). If you are philips engineer think twice before you buy this book otherwise think 100 times to buy it for 80 $.

        Book Description

The fundamental physics of metallic magnetism is not yet satisfactorily understood and continues to be interesting. For instance, magnetism is anticipated to play a principal role in producing high T c superconductivity of oxides.
This book has two major objectives. First, it intends to provide an introduction to magnetism of metals in a broad sense. Besides pursuing the mechanism of metallic magnetism itself, it attempts to find and actively analyze magnetic causes hidden hitherto unnoticed behind various physical phenomena.
The author's goal is to expose the fundamental role played by phonons in the mechanism of metallic magnetism. He demonstrates how such a view also helps to elucidate a broad spectrum of other observations. The second objective is to concisely introduce the standard many-body points of view and techniques necessary in studying solid physics in general.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Good balance.......2005-07-03

The authors achieved a very interesting balance between the mathematical level and the introductory nature of the book (if you don't already master the math, you will have to learn it in order to understand the text... which is good). It has a good number of worked out examples, and the problems are challenging without being unsolvable. One characteristic of these is that they require a good comprehension of the material and therefore, you will not go on to the next chapter without learning the material (hopefully). The structure of the book is pretty much standard. Mathematically, the book is not self-contained, but that does not affect my rating because it is not intended to be. With a good foundation (or book) in vector calculus and maybe a more elementary book in E&M (Griffiths? Yeah, I agree with a previous reviewer that it might be an expensive proposition), you will be more than ready to learn E&M.

5 out of 5 stars This is THE book to get to study E/M.......2004-07-26

Whether you are a student in engineering or physics field, you should get this book. The author is terrific in explaining things. It's complete and to-the-point. After reading this book, not only would your understanding of E/M increase tenfold, your mathematical ability strengthens along with it too!

This book is not really for 100% beginner. You must be rather well versed in vector calculus.

My only complaint about this book is that only about 3 pages are devoted to discussing numerical methods, which is not sufficient from my point of view. Despite this shortcoming, THIS BOOK IS BY FAR THE BEST!!! Buy it with Griffith's book, this is ALL you'll ever need to learn E/M!!

        4 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2004-03-23

I used this book for a 2 semester course in E&M. I absolutely hated it for the first semester, but it's merits became apparent during the second semester. The treatment of statics is inadequate at best, but Pollack and Stump do a great job from the chapter on Maxwell's equations on. The chapter on relativity and tensors alone makes this book a worthwhile buy. I would suggest using Griffith's for statics and Pollack and Stump for dynamics, but given the cost of both books thats probably going to be an expensive proposition.

        5 out of 5 stars Great Text.......2004-02-13

Goes into much more detail than other undergraduate E&M texts, so it will never leave you hanging on the math. Discussion is also extremely clear and easy to follow. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who is taking an undergraduate E&M course.

        Book Description

The Physics of Semiconductors provides material for a comprehensive upper-level-undergraduate and graduate course on the subject, guiding readers to the point where they can choose a special topic and begin supervised research. The textbook provides a balance between essential aspects of solid-state and semiconductor physics, on the one hand, and the principles of various semiconductor devices and their applications in electronic and photonic devices, on the other. It highlights many practical aspects of semiconductors such as alloys, strain, heterostructures, nanostructures, that are necessary in modern semiconductor research but typically omitted in textbooks. For the interested reader some additional advanced topics are included, such as Bragg mirrors, resonators, polarized and magnetic semiconductors are included. Also supplied are explicit formulas for many results, to support better understanding. The Physics of Semiconductors requires little or no prior knowledge of solid-state physics and evolved from a highy regarded two-semester course at the University of Leipzig.

5 out of 5 stars Nice survey of modern semiconductor science.......2006-11-11

This book is extremely well illustrated. It is a pleasure thumbing through the book and learning something in a new area just by looking at all the diagrams and pictures. However, the discussions of semiconductor devices are pretty sketchy, and formula derivations are mostly non-existent. For example, the book gives expressions for the different mobility limits for ionized impurity and phonon scattering, but does not derive any of them like Seeger would, although references are given. Unlike the Seeger classic, in its 9th edition, where new topics kind of look like they were just thrown in, this book has a more coherent integrated treatment of "new" topics with the older classical topics. If you want in-depth discussions, you will likely be disappointed. However, if you are looking for a broad survey of modern areas of interest in semiconductor physics and technology, with lots of well-chosen figures and diagrams, this is a fine book.

          Book Description

Intended for undergraduate courses in physics for students in biological physics, life sciences, biophysics, physiology, medical physics, and biomedical engineering, this book is an introduction to electricity and magnetism with examples and problems from the medical and biological sciences; it covers standard topics of electrostatic fields and potentials, electric currents, electrochemistry and bioelectricity, and electromagnetism.

This new edition of a classic set of books, originally published in 1974 from the authors' typescript, has been edited, updated, corrected, indexed, and typeset. It will satisfy the growing need for a working knowledge of the physical sciences among students and practitioners in the medical and biological sciences. The books can be used as supplements to standard introductory physics courses, as texts for medical schools, medical physics courses, and biology departments, and as a reference for practitioners. Chapters include problems and references.

The authors are recognized experts in the field. Benedek was the recipient of the 1995 Irving Langmuir Prize from the American Physical Society's Division of Chemical Physics, and the 1994 Biological Physics Prize from the American Physical Society.
