5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference work and study guide for magnetism.......2003-08-11

This is an immensely important compilation of the state-of-
the-art quantum electronic interpretation of the physics of magnetism. Doctor O'Handley has masterfully organized his lecture notes and has produced a magnum opus.
I had the extraordinary good fortune of attending his lecture series at the University of Florida in 1994. The class was primarily for materials engineering graduate students, but I was allowed to take the class because I was doing research in magnetic devices for electrical engineering. Even though the physics involved was at a higher level than I was used to, Dr. O'Handley was able to communicate the necessary concepts in a lucid manner.
His intelligible explanations in the lecture hall are repeated and expanded in this well-crafted volume.
If you are interested in the science of magnetism from an electrical engineering, or material science, perspective, I wholeheartedly recommend purchasing this book.

5 out of 5 stars Modern Magnetic Materials: Principles and Applications.......2001-12-01

This book will take you from basic academic knowledge about magnetism to a proficient understanding of the most recent advances in magnetic materials and devices. This book is well very organized and written in a concise manner. Dr. O'Handley has earned our congratulations on both scope and quality for this book. Graduate students, researchers, engineers, theorists, experimenters and other newcomers to the field will find this book an excellent entry to the field as well as a handy reference. The book is one of the best text in the area of applied magnetism.
This invaluable book should certainly be present in the library of any department or institute carrying out magnetism R&D work. In other words, it deserves to be on the shelves of any lab or research institute library. I strongly recommend this book to every student and teacher who intends studying or teaching magnetism.

5 out of 5 stars Modern Magnetic Materials.......2000-04-04

This is the book which contains all about the magnetism practically in use. From the basic theory of magnetism to the practical use, e.g., magnetic recording materials, surface and thin films. This is the best book treating magnetism practically. But this deos not contain the rigorous thoery using second quantization, e.g., Hubbard Hamiltonian and Anderson Impurity. That is, this book is the introduction for graduate students majoring in experimental condensed matter physicis - materials and materials science for practical use.

Book Description

Part of the Basic Skills in Electricity and Electronics Series, Electricity makes the introduction to this discipline easy to understand. The program assumes no previous training in the subject; only arithmetic and an introduction to algebra are used in explanations and problems. The text begins with a coverage of the fundamentals of direct current. This leads to a unified presentation of subject generally associated with alternating currents. Throughout the text, concepts build from one chapter to another. This important feature enables students to develop a unified understanding of electricity and the applications of electricity.

A dedication to student learning is evident throughout the text. Every page features a vertical color bar that focuses on key words. Many illustrations with a unique four-color design highlight the most important elements. Short self-tests (with answers provided) are presented throughout the text to offer immediate reinforcement and build students' confidence. Another valuable feature is the summary of key concepts found at the end of each chapter. This new edition also includes performance objectives and critical-thinking questions for every chapter.

5 out of 5 stars Electricity, Not Electronics.......2002-11-11

Electricity.
This is a subject that is often glossed over or dismissed in favor of Electronics.

A firm grasp of Electricity is needed before one can hope to master Electronics.

This remarkable book does just that. It is written in an intuitive manner allowing a novice to progress through the subject with ease.

For the those who practice Electricity for a living, it is a welcome refresher. Even the "Old Salt" who has been doing it for years: there are lots of "Ah Ha's," yet to be discovered.

This Book should not be underestimated or dismissed; it is worth exploring.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible Stay Clear.......2002-03-21

This book is written for someone with a 6th grade education and no more. It talks about magamps for pete's sake. It dosen't even broach the subject of transistors. NO TRANSISTOR THEORY!! What in sakes is electronics if not transistors! The stupid objectives at the beginning of each chapter, and the even worst review problems at the end of each chapter are simply a waste of pages. I am a former nuke electrician from the navy and a current IC Fabrication Technician in the semiconductor industry. I purchased the book to just stay up on my studies, but this book fell way short. My fiancee's daughter has learned almost everything that is covered in this book, and she is only in the 7th grade. Be forewarned, a bad book indeed.

4 out of 5 stars This is an excellent book for beginners in electricity........2000-06-21

This book is written in the standard format for a classroom environment, which makes it very easy to follow and find previously read topics you may have forgotten. However, some sections would be easier to learn with the aid of a teacher; although, it is still possible to learn the material without one. This book covers a wide range of topics for electricity, but not many applications of it. Over all, this book provides you with a strong foundation in the electrical field.

2 out of 5 stars OK, but not great........2005-04-29

The real strength of this book is in its compilation of a vast amount of physical data in tables and spectra. It is geared towards the practical chemist who wants to learn and understand classical NMR spectroscopy. The physicist will be disappointed by the convoluted explanations and lengthy paragraphs. There are no errors in the book as far as I know, but the explanations given and proofs aren't necessarily the shortest and most elegant. You'd need to consult other books for that. Also disappointing is its wide use of old school quantum mechanical wave functions rather than density matrix notation. While this is fine, it makes the derivations too long, and for no good reason.

Also disappointing is the price of $100 for a paperback! I boought this book 2 years ago for $70 at a local bookstore. How can the publisher increase its price by $30 over two years? This is absolutely scandalous given that it is only a paperback. You'd be better off buying a cheap pirate Chinese edition for $10.

5 out of 5 stars A complete and comprehensive book about NMR.......2001-06-18

I strongly recommend this book about NMR principles by Harald Gunther. I study chemistry and it was useful for me in structural analysis of organic compounds. I think its most atracttive feature is the the clear and comprehensive way that uses to describe the NMR principles and experiments (including pulse experiments and 2D NMR). You understand what you read without having to read it once again. This book is also very complete and includes some solved exercises

    ASIN: 0195058232

    Book Description

This book provides a general view of bioelectromagnetism and describes it as an independent discipline. It begins with an historical account of the many innovations and innovators on whose work the field rests. This is accompanied by a discussion of both the theories and experiments which were contributed to the development of the field. The physiological origin of bioelectric and biomagnetic signal is discussed in detail. The sensitivity in a given measurement situation, the energy distribution in stimulation with the same electrodes, and the measurement of impedance are related and described by the electrode lead field. It is shown that, based on the reciprocity theorem, these are identical and further, that these procedures apply equally well for biomagnetic considerations. The difference between corresponding bioelectric and biomagnetic methods is discussed. The book shows, that all subfields of bioelectromagnetism obey the same basic laws and they are closely tied together through the principle of reciprocity. Thus the book helps the reader to understand the properties of existing bioelectric and biomagnetic measurements and stimulation methods and to design new systems. The book includes about 300 carefully drawn illustrations and 500 references. It can be used as a textbook for third or fourth year university students and as a source of reference.

4 out of 5 stars The most comprehensive book on the physics of ferroelectrics.......1999-02-16

The book by Lines and Glass is the most comprehensive book on the physics of ferroelectrics that I have come across in the pertinent literature. It is by no means for the novice since a solid background in solid state physics is absoluytely needed. The book especially addresses the lattice dynamics picture of ferroelectricity in a concise manner. Also, optical properties of ferroelectrics are given in full depth that is rather difficult to find in many other texts. This book is by no means a textbook. It is very comprehensive reference volume as it contains a lot of critical experimental data and quite a lot of illustrations. Furthermore, the bibliography is vast. All physical models used in the physics of ferroelectricity are derived/summarized from the very first step making the book very "dense" in content. It would characterize the book as somewhat difficult to read, yet I highly recommend it for those who are interested in the physics of ferroelectric phenomena. I do hope that book will be reprinted soon and be available at an affordable price. Addendum: Since the writing of this review, it seems the book has become available again at a much reduced price ;-)

2 out of 5 stars Not Good For Practical Use - Good Semi-Conductor Section.......2001-08-02

I bought this book with the hopes that it will be a quick read and a good reference for a working scientist. I took two quarters of "Electronics for Physicists" and I know this book leaves out many items covered in those courses. Further, as a working scientist in need of doing electronics, I find myself reaching for other books, since this one is not complete.

The book does lack examples that would allow the reader to build an intuition as to what some of the circuits do. Also lacks ample examples to do the analysis. The book leaves out the responses of such circuits. I can go in the lab and figure it out, but this takes additional time. I couldn't find any 'constructive' exercises that would allow a reader to construct. Perhaps a 'Lab book' that would compliment this one is in order.

The section on semi-conductor physics is well thought out, but this is also done in other books.

Overall, I would look to other electronic books to get started in the lab. Further, I don't feel this book would prepare the reader for any sort of GRE, PhD quals or electronics course exam. I'm giving it two stars since the section on semi-conductor physics is really good.
