Book Description
Now in its fifth edition, Optical Electronics in Modern Communications reflects the latest developments in the field Yariv helped define. The changes to this edition emulate the continuous ascendance of optical communication to the forefront of communication technology, evidenced by the change in title from Optical Electronics in previous editions. The text introduces readers to the first principles of phenomena and devices used in the practice of laser physics, including applications based on lasers with emphasis placed on optical fiber communications, and features real-life examples as well as extensive problems. New to this edition are sections on pulse dispersion and narrowing in fibers, high speed modulation of semiconductor lasers, vertical cavity lasers, quantum optics, holographic data storage, fiber gratings, and dfb lasers. A solutions manual is also available for instructors. Known as the authoritative forerunner on Optical Electronics, this new edition can be used as both a core text in the classroom and as an invaluable reference for practicing engineers.
Customer Reviews:
Rehashed mediocrity........2004-03-09
Same old, same old. This is more or less Qauntum Electronics in (yet) another cover. Yariv is a lousy presenter. The materials in this book are never really difficult. The reader, however, may have trouble following it from time to time just because it's poorly organized and presented. Make no mistake, optical electronics is no quantum field theory, and you should be able to pick it up over the time you spend over the commode. Rather than impeding your learning by battling the style of this book, do yourself a favor and get one of the several better alternatives already out there.
best advanced optics book........2003-04-03
This book is one of the best investments you can do, it is worth every penny and then some. This text has the perfect mix of mathematics and amusement. It gives outstanding overview of all optics, photonics and fiber optic communication basics. The figures are good, as are the problems at the end of each chapter. As an optical graduate, I recommend this text highly to graduates and optical engineers. Yariv has a clear style and is a very good writer. The format is also great!
What is new? Where is the emphasis?.......2003-02-06
Here we go again. Another edition of the same book, without any significant additions or more emphasis. Yariv mostly puts together parts of what he had published decades ago in this book. He pays little attention to pedagogy and does not care to put connections between concepts in different chapters.
I could not find a spirit in the book that ties concepts together. Yariv jumps from one notation or symbol set to another without giving you any notice, which makes me think that he was more concerned with putting together his notes in a book format than trying actually teach you the subject. Publishing essentially the same book as another edition just adds insult to the injury.
Do yourself a favor and check out some other book on the same subject, such as Verdeyen's Laser Electronics. Or if you have to buy it, save yourself a buck or two and buy an older edition used.
Has all the things a good textbook should have!.......2000-05-16
This book is outstanding. Yariv is very clear, he motivates topics very well, and he is very thourough in what he covers. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in fiber optics, lasers, non-linear optics, or waveguides.

Not for Physicists.......2005-04-10
The book covers alot of material, but often repeats itself in later chapters.
The index is dreadful - making it exceedingly difficult to find what you want in a hurry. I normally ended up using the contents and hoping for the best.
The book is written for engineers rather than Physicists, as it does little in the way of Physical justifcation for the principles it presents.
There is however, not other book {to my knowledge} that covers this material, thus making the book a worthwhile purchase.
Test and Measurement Bible.......2001-11-20
This books stands heads and shoulders above anything else written so far on the test and measurement of fiber optic systems and components. The other reviewers have given details about the books content, so I'll say why I liked the book.
Two main reasons: 1) The authors go into detail regarding how different instruments work from physical principles. Such an understanding is useful in understanding a device's (and measurement's) accuracy and validity.
2) The practical tips and explanations on how to make measurement alone make this an essential reference. This book neatly compliments theoretical books and papers by explaining how the typical measurements you may read about in a journal article are made and the underlying issues that contribute/take away from a measurement's efficacy/accuracy.
Some of my colleagues say that because this book was written by HP people and the examples shown involve HP instruments, this book loses some value. If so, this loss is miniscule.
Most photonic test instruments, HP or not, work on more or less the same principles. Whether or not you own HP instruments, you will find this book an invaluable reference.
Essential Test and Measurement Book.......2000-12-06
This text is essential for anyone who wishes to test or measure optical sub-components, components, systems, or devices. Dennis lays out the fundamentals of each measurement in an easy to understand format. This is especially useful because this field is growing tremendously and often utilizes people from other fields who lack familiarity with these measurements. This book provides as easy to understand tutorial for people who need to learn these techniques. If you can't measure what you have very well, you don't know what you sent to your customer; and if they can't measure what you sent them, they don't know what they have.
Best book on Fiber Optic Testing.......2000-09-13
I have known the test and measuring work performed by HP people since 1989, specially the written work from Dr. Christian Hentschel (one of the authors of the book) on lightwave standards and test procedures. After working all these years in the fiber optic and optoelectronics field, I have found this precisious book, and I highly recommend it to every one who needs to work on fiber optic communications. For sure, this book will easly be a first reference on the field.
Best Book For Everyone in Fiber Telecommunication.......2000-03-26
I am an engineer in fiber telecommunication. I found this book is the best one for everyone in fiber optics industry. Not just theory, it gives you lots of real view how they test in HP. If you want to read this book, logon HP websit as a reference. If you are in optical industry, email me. I want to make more friends in this field.
Book Description
Fundamentals of Optical Waveguides is an essential resource for any researcher, professional or student involved in optics and communications engineering. Any reader interested in designing or actively working with optical devices must have a firm grasp of the principles of lightwave propagation. Katsunari Okamoto has presented this difficult technology clearly and concisely with several illustrations and equations. Optical theory encompassed in this reference includes coupled mode theory, nonlinear optical effects, finite element method, beam propagation method, staircase concatenation method, along with several central theorems and formulas.
Since the publication of the well-received first edition of this book, planar lightwave circuits and photonic crystal fibers have fully matured. With this second edition the advances of these fibers along with other improvements on existing optical technologies are completely detailed. This comprehensive volume enables readers to fully analyze, design and simulate optical atmospheres.
* Exceptional new chapter on Arrayed-Waveguide Grating (AWG)
* In depth discussion of Photonic Crystal Fibers (PCFs)
* Thorough explanation of Multimode Interference Devices (MMI)
* Full coverage of polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD)

Optical waveguides in a nutshell.......2001-04-10
Fundamental to the science of fiber optics is knowledge about how light behaves in optical waveguides. Subjects of interest include waveguides made of optical fiber as well as planar waveguides in optical integrated circuits. Issues include the modal distribution of optical energy in the waveguides, nonlinear effects, and the ability of the waveguide to transmit large amounts of data without degradation or errors. Okamoto's book addresses all of these subjects in detail, forming a convenient single-source reference for the practicing scientist, engineer, or graduate student.
Okamoto's book is exceptionally well organized, and explains advanced and sometimes difficult concepts easily. The subject material and mathematical detail assume the reader to be well grounded in the basics of fiber optics, and able to work comfortably with differential, vector, and integral calculus. In addition, concepts such as Bessel functions, Maxwell's equations, and the nonlinear Schrodinger equation are used without introduction.
Although not formally organized in parts, the subject matter can be broadly divided into three categories. The first category consists of a basic treatment of waveguides in general, including the derivation of the functional forms of the eigenmodes in slab, rectangular, cylindrical, and coupled waveguides. I found the discussion on coupled mode theory particularly useful. Derivation of the eigenmodes is rigorous, with few simplifying assumptions. The equations are generally in Cartesian coordinates, making them useful for general-purpose numerical simulations, which are discussed in detail later in the book. Some of the more important equations should probably have been expressed in cylindrical coordinates as well, as this would make them more applicable for back-of-the envelope calculations. Making the simplifications is not hard, however, and there are blank pages at the end of the book for customizing it with these additional equations. Also lacking is a glossary of definitions of mathematical symbols used throughout the book.
The second category consists of specific, highly detailed and mathematically intense discussions about numerical methods used to solve the intensity distribution of light in inhomogeneous-core planar waveguides and fibers. Topics include the beam propagation method, staircase concatenation method, and finite element method. The discussions are sufficiently detailed that the capable and enthusiastic student should be able to write computer code that solves the propagation characteristics of virtually any arbitrary waveguide. Although commercial software already does this, the background presented in Okamoto's book will be useful to the user of such software, providing insight as to how the software works, and its limitations.
Straddling the discussion of numerical methods are discussions on nonlinear effects in optical fibers and planar lightwave circuits. The discussion on nonlinear optics is one of the best single-chapter treatments of the subject that I've seen, with quantitative explanations of solitons (light and dark), self-phase modulation (the optical Kerr effect), Raman scattering, and Brillouin scattering. There is also a brief discussion about optical amplification. Surprisingly, however, the book fails to discuss four-wave mixing. The chapter on planar lightwave circuits is one of the best quantitative descriptions of the arrayed waveguide grating I've ever seen. Overall, this is an excellent book that will be a valuable resource for scientists and engineers involved in fiber optics. I highly recommend it.
Great Intro to Optical Waveguides.......2000-10-02
This is a very good book for optical waveguide design. After the first dozen pages, the book dives into a very detail, and theoretical descriptions. I don't think it was aimed to the working engineer/scientist, nor the undergraduate student. If you're OK with Bessel functions, solving boundary conditions and are comfortable with describing designs with eigenstates, then this is for you. If you're getting into the area, this is a more advanced book.
Either case, it does belong on any serious optical waveguide designers shelf (there's a lot of material in this book).

One Up From Technician's Hanbook!.......2000-08-04
This is a good book that goes beyone those intro to fiber optics books (that left out the equations and engineering technologies). It's basically a non-equation book for engineers, rather than techs or curious fans of fiber optics (it does get a wee bit complicated).
This book goes into more detail on fiber optic components, applications (networks), manufacturing (packaging, semiconductor fab techniques etc) and touches on curring edge devices (well, the book is 2 years old...).
I'd recommend it if you want to know what your engineers and boss are talking about. It's not the book to grab if you're going to start designing routers or waveguides (you'd probably know the stuff in the book if you're given the job to do such things...)
Best book on Practical Fiber Optics.......1999-03-19
This is one of the best books I have ever read on Fiber Optic communications. Very up-to-date and in-depth. It is a definite book for your fiber optics books library.

A good introduction to the field.......2001-11-10
Honestly, I wan't five stars blown away by this book, but it deserves better than to be rated one star because someone in Korea wants the solutions manual. After reviewing the wave and quantum nature of light and some elementary solid-state physics, this book discusses the modulation of light by electrical, magnetic, and acoustic means. This theoretical background is used to motivate the next chapter, which covers display devices like LCDs. The next two chapters cover the basic theory of lasers and some of their non-communications applications like holography and machining. The next chapter covers devices to detect light, followed by a chapter on fiber optic waveguides. At this point, the authors have provided sufficient background to discuss optical communications systems. The final chapter covers the non-communcations applications of fiber such as fiber-optic sensors and coherent fiber bundles for imaging. Overall, the book is a good introductory survey of optoelectronics.

Customer Reviews:
Great examples of practical optoelectronic circuits.......2005-12-17
If you are a physicist or engineer, you'll find plenty of textbooks on optics, electronics, and optoelectronics, but probably not many examples of optoelectronic circuits. That is where the value of this book lies. There are the very basics of theory on optics in these chapters, but you will need to read other books to really be able to say you know optics. Chapter 3 is where the book takes a big upswing in quality and uniqueness. This chapter on optocouplers and optointerfacing and the example circuits are brilliant. Obvious and plain commonsense, you'll ask yourself "why didn't I think of it"? "Optocouplers and optointerfacing" presents a great many circuits for any number of purposes and the standouts would have to be the TTL - to - RS-232 interface, RS-232 infrared data transmission system and, a high speed RS-232 infrared computer interface. In later chapters we get to "wireless security systems" another interesting subject. The schematics are quite clear, contain comprehensive parts lists and include manufacturers of unusual parts. I didn't check the degree of ease or difficulty of sourcing these parts but I note that light dependent resistors and the phototransistor are manufactured by Vactec. They are not mentioned in the appendix of sources and vendors. Later chapters in my opinion only get better and better provided you have an interest in these areas.
In summary I highly recommend this book to individuals who want to get their hands on some concrete projects that unite the power of electronics and optics, provided they have other sources for the theory and also provided they are prepared to do some hunting for some of the rarer devices needed to build some of the circuits.
Optoelectronics, Fiber Optics, and Laser Cookbook.......2000-03-29
One of the best electronic books today, optoelectronics is perfect, fun and easy to use. This is a guide to optical circuits which includes fiber optics and lasers, provides a collection of experiments and projects for the college student, technician, and hobbyist. The book is greatly detailed and simple directions to enter the field of optoelectronics in nontechnical terms. It is really fun and again, easy to use for any of its 88 projects. Dare to be challeged and be caught up in what I call the best "something to do" book.
