Could have been great - but this book sucks.......2005-01-24
This book has incredible potential. This could have been a great book. But unfortunately this book really sucks. The author only gives partial explanations while he is deriving formulas. There is not enough information given to follow and learn the subject matter while following his derivations. This book should only be used by people who know how to derive all the equations. So if you don't know the material before purchasing this book then don't waste your money.
An excellent reference book for lasers........2004-06-19
This book is definately not for the novice. This book covers a large amount of material in its 777 pages. I got this book as an undergraduate for an advanced optics survey course. It was a little sparse on the explanations for an undergraduate. In graduate school however, this text has come in handy a number of times to fill in the gaps from other books or in heavy-duty problem solving. His coverage of gain saturation, broadening and line-widths I thought were especially usefull, as well as his coverage of the ABCD matrices. All in all, a must-have for your optics bookshelf.
Pleasant layout, but cops out when things get subtle........2003-10-26
The layout of this book is very pleasant. Nice, clean typography. The presentation is informal without sacrificing accuracy. However, the author seems to have a bad habit. When the explanation is straightforward (ie the reader can probably figure it out on his/her own), he does a fine job of explaining. When explanations are really needed, he relegates them to the problems. For example, in the sections dealing with the density matrix formalism, he assigns in the general formulation a characteristic decay constant to each energy level. So when it comes to working out the two-level problem, he should explain why he can justifiably "simplify" the problem by assigning a single decay time constant to the population difference between the two levels, instead of perserving the two different decay constants. This is one of the more subtle points in the whole density matrix presentation, yet he weasels out of the situation by leaving it to the problems section. The same pattern is repeated in the part where a comparison between the results of rate equations and density matrix are made. When it comes time to really point out the reason for the validity of the rate equations, he relegates it to the problems again. This is unfortunate, since a proper explanation would clearly demonstrate true insight into the physics.
Great Book for Intermediate/Advanced Understanding.......2000-05-26
This is an excellent book for those intend to major into Laser Physics with emphasis in practical, theoretical and modelling sides of Laser Physics but I agree that this book would be very tough for those who start learning Physics. But the mathematics is elegant with emphasis on the real world.
I liked this book!.......2000-05-21
I thought this book was an excellent reference. The explanations are clear. I must admit that some equations seem to be inadequately justified, but not to any greater extent than many other undergraduate texts, such as Eisberg and Resnick (the quantum book). This book went into the right amount of mathematical depth for someone like me who just wanted to get the 'big picture' for my thesis and not worry too much about the details. Much, much better than the books by Chow, Koch and Sargent, and Thompson.
I might add that I am a physics major and thus have had considerable background in electromagnetism and quantum mechanics. Perhaps lack of background is why the Stanford engineer felt that the book was too hard.
Book Description
Keeping abreast of the latest techniques and applications, this new edition of the standard reference and graduate text on laser spectroscopy has been completely revised and expanded. While the general concept is unchanged, the new edition features a broad array of new material, e.g., frequency doubling in external cavities, reliable cw-parametric oscillators, tunable narrow-band UV sources, more sensitive detection techniques, tunable femtosecond and sub-femtosecond lasers (X-ray region and the attosecond range), control of atomic and molecular excitations, frequency combs able to synchronize independent femtosecond lasers, coherent matter waves, and still more applications in chemical analysis, medical diagnostics, and engineering.

A complete treatise of lasers and related subjects.......2006-04-30
The 3rd edition of this comprehensive book is revised, updated and extended. W. Demtr?der covers almost everything about laser spectroscopy in this voluminous masterpiece.
The book starts with basics of lasers, optical aspects of lasers. There is a large chapter allotted for laser instrumentation, for those who want to learn about the technical features. A lot of informative discussions are given in regards to generation and manipulation of lasers. Recent advances and innovations are also mentioned. A large bibliography accompanies the book, for those who want to delve into further details.
Diagrams are very useful in general. Not all mathematical derivations were given explicitly. The reader is assumed to have some fundamental knowledge of modern physics, optics and lasers. If you follow the book from the beginning to end, you will see that the subjects are built upon preceding sections, which is pedagogically useful.
This book is recommended to those who want to gain a general, comprehensive and profound comprehension of laser spectroscopy. For more detailed and focused topics, one needs to consult more specialized books.
Overall, this is an essential and high-quality book.
Good reference book.......2004-02-18
This is a very complete introduction book to laser spectroscopy. The thing I like best about this book is clarity. The author lays down basic principles of a set-up in one or two pages, supplemented with illustrations. First 5 chapters are about instruments. Then it is followed by 9 chapters of introduction of different types of laser spectroscopy. The last chapter contains several real-life applications of spectroscopy.
The difference between 2nd and 3rd editions is small. I think only about 10-15 sections are changed. Very few changes in the first 12 chapters. Among the new stuffs, CRDS and frequency combing seem interesting. I skipped the update on the last chapter. I think there is no need to buy the new edition if your cash supply is limited.
Good reference book on spectroscopy.......2001-02-14
This book contains most of the optical spectroscopic methods currently used. A highly recommended book for anyone who wants an introduction to research level spectroscopic methods.
great book.......1999-12-06
It is a great book that I read until now about Laser Spectroscopy. It is a most useful book for me in my education and researchs .

Customer Reviews:
Undergrad EE.......2006-10-19
This book is lacking on examples. Sections will drag on for pages with no examples whatsoever. Some of the questions at the end of the chapters, seemingly, have nothing to do with the chapter whatsoever. I would not recommend this course to someone who intends to learn what they need from the book. The index is also a terrible reference. The text also needs to repeat what some variables are. Often times the author will introduce a new variable or a variable with an augmented subscript and not explain what it is. How frustrating.....!
Buy the Second Edition!!!.......2005-01-30
This book is incredible! It will take the reader with an understanding of Calculus and Differential Equations and provide them with inside to a sufficient level of science and notation (from quantum mechanics, Russell-Sauders, etc) and give you all the skills required to design a laser. I have the good fortune of taking the class from the Author, who created the first blue-helium metal vapor laser. His book is providing the insight to the lectures, so I think I could have learned it all just from the text. By the end of this text, I will have designed my first laser, and considering I had never seen one until a few weeks ago... I am fully thankful to this great book, and all the experiences that the contributor gave us. The text has sufficient derivation to see that he's not just dropping down equations, and it is combined with the many figures which explain the physics and actual test data which give you a 'feel' for what is happening. I particularly like the chapter intros that tell you where you are going, but the chapters are packed with information. This was my first formal introducion to quantum mechanics, laser design, material gain, etc. and it is definately coherent. I predict that this book will be in my collection long after my other texts have been donated to other students or colleagues, because I will not part with it.
Perfect for beginners.......2003-08-25
I was looking for a good laser book tried svelto, siegman but they were written at a comparatively higher level, so I found this book, boy! what a relief. I guess the best part of the book is that the author doesn't stress too much on mathematics, electromagnetics or advanced optics. Moreover the early chapters deals with all the fundamentals required to understand lasers (that is covered in later chapters)
Bottomline: If you need a quick yet thorough introduction to lasers, this is the book.
Check this out too!.......2002-10-22
I also recommend Orazio Sveltos book "Principles of Lasers"
Experience.......2002-10-22
This book is one of the best that I have read, and I have read most of them. It is clear and to the point. It is both fundamental and practical. I use it as a reference and dont care much about the small errors it may have. Its advantages far outway its small number of errors. Its not a text book, its not supposed to teach the reader quantum physics or optics. I highly recommend this book for anyone that works with lasers.
