Book Description

Principles of Optics is one of the classic science books of the twentieth century, and probably the most influential book in optics published in the past forty years. This edition has been thoroughly revised and updated, with new material covering the CAT scan, interference with broad-band light and the so-called Rayleigh-Sommerfeld diffraction theory. This edition also details scattering from inhomogeneous media and presents an account of the principles of diffraction tomography to which Emil Wolf has made a basic contribution. Several new appendices are also included. This new edition will be invaluable to advanced undergraduates, graduate students and researchers working in most areas of optics.

Yes - all classical (linear) optical concepts are in here, and yes, it's the 'bible', but it's very dated in its content, style and references, generally, and not very practical to use.

I wish Hecht - or someone like him - would re-write this classic as a more advanced version of his book.

5 out of 5 stars The Bible.......2007-07-05

Amazing book. It's the bible of geometric optics. Have everything you might need.

Needs a little previous knowledge, but which book doesn't?

5 out of 5 stars A Classic in the Science of Optics.......2004-09-26

I read this book in the late sixties, when some of my fellow engineers built and tested an acoustic lens for a developmental company. Born & Wolf were well-acquainted with antenna aperture theory, and were among the first to write that the human eye could resolve 5X better than aperture theory would predict. This they credited to involuntary eye movements called flicks and saccades, which when combined with the brain's ability to do signal processing, was able to produce much better resolution than would have been predicted by the diameter of the retinal rods. In many ways the book gives testimony to God's wonderful gift of vision with color, depth, clarity, and order.

5 out of 5 stars Good book.......2003-03-14

It is just a rare book on physical optics based on Maxwell equations. Rarely a book states the assumptions, the validity of the equations, the principles and how the equations arrived. Certainly, it is a great book for postgraduates and researchers in physical optics not so for undergraduate students who don't want to go through all the mathematics.

4 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2002-12-13

This book is a classic with all problems associated. Half of the reference quoted have been written before the WWII. Very useful if you like to quote original papers. This book cover most topics of the classical optics but hardy cover modern topics.

However, it is hard to read and use a weird notation. Certainly not useful for rapid referencing. Like the bible, use it only when you have serious problem to deal with.

5 out of 5 stars The Bible of X-ray Diffraction.......2000-09-20

Klug & Alexanders book on X-ray diffraction has since it's release, of the first edition in 1954, been and still is the ultimate book on X-ray diffraction procedures. It covers any subject of interest to X-Ray Diffraction form "Elementary Crystallography" and "Properties and Production of X-rays" through "Precision and Errors" to "Operations of X-ray machinery" and many more. Even today, over 25 years after the release of the lasest edition, "X-ray Diffraction Procedures" is because of it's thoroughness, attention to detail, number and depth of subjects dealt with still a must for anybody working with X-Ray Diffraction. The depth, width and fundamental nature of the subject dealt with, and the book as a whole, more than makes the fact the it isn't up to date with the latest technical innovations. There can be no douth that "X-Ray Diffraction Procedures" is the Bible of X-ray diffraction.

Book Description

The present book provides a clear and comprehensive introduction to the topics of crystallography and diffraction for undergraduate and beginning graduate students and lecturers in physics, chemistry, materials and earth sciences, but will also be of interest to the layperson who wishes to know about these topics beyond the level given in more general trade science books. The book shows how crystal structures may be built up from simple ideas of atomic packing and co-ordination, and develops the concepts of crystal symmetry, point and space groups by way of two-dimensional examples of patterns and tilings. Furthermore, the concept of the reciprocal lattice is explained in simple terms and its importance in an understanding of light, x-ray and electron diffraction shown. Finally, the book covers practical examples of the applications of these techniques, and describes the importance of diffraction in the performance of optical instruments. For this second edition, the existing material has been thoroughly updated, additional figures and exercises have been supplied and two new chapters added. From reviews on the 1/e: '... This is a timely, well-constructed book which should be seriously considered by every teacher of crystallography and can be recommended to anyone who wants to get to grips with crystallography and diffraction.' P. Goodhew, Journal of Microscopy, June 1998 'IUCr publications have always been outstanding for quality of presentation and exposition and this book maintains that high standard.' J.E. Chisholm, Mineralogical Magazine, February 1998

5 out of 5 stars Review.......2007-04-02

I found this book to be a very nice introduction of X-Ray Crystallography. There is just enough detail so that it is not overwhelming, but you can still learn quite a bit from this book.

4 out of 5 stars good introduction to crystallography.......2006-07-05

For an undergrad reader, Hammond develops the theory and explains the experiments you can do in crytallography. The theory of scattering from a single crystal explains the diffraction patterns. The latter are what you observe, and the text shows how you can work back from these to deduce what the underlying crystal structure might be.

There are variations on this approach. Especially the powder method, where you do not have a single crystal, but a powder of microcrystals. Which can be visualised as spinning the Bravais lattice around its origin, to give the diffraction patterns.

More recent observations like quasicrystals are also covered.

A good introduction to crystallography.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended........2003-01-14

Very nice book, very comprehensive, excellent quality of pictures. Can be recommended as a very gentle introduction to crystallography and diffraction. Probably not so useful for more advanced students.

3 out of 5 stars Optics.......2007-07-04

This schaum's outline is too old for this topic (same thing for Optics by Eugene Hecht ISBN: 0805385665). It is time for someone to write a new one even if physics has not changed! (I guess what you pay is what you get!)

Pro: good summary for something you know
con: not much detail like many old books from schaum's

5 out of 5 stars Good book.......2007-06-13

This is a great book for somebody who wants to learn basics and get a feeling about optics. Helped me with the exam too.

4 out of 5 stars Great supplement for exam prep.......2007-05-07

I used this book as a supplement for a course in Physical Optics, mainly to get practice in solving problems. I found the chapters on Polarization and Diffraction very useful. This book helped me get a better grade in this course. This book does not cover the topics like Jones and Coherence Matrix and Stokes vector. However these topics are covered well in the same author's Optics text. BTW, The Optics text is also very good. Solving problems in this book and then approaching the text gives a much better understanding of Optics. This book does not cover Poincare' sphere, which is also an important topic for which we cant find material anywhere except our Professor's lecture notes. Overall, this book is a must if you are taking any Optics course or the GRE physics text or if you just want to master the basics of Optics.

4 out of 5 stars Good book.......2006-08-15

Its a good book to work problems in congunction with a regular text book. The practical side is limited for engineering purposes. Smith or Fischer is a better book.

I am a practicing engineer, so I look at stuff from what works in real world. It would have been a very good book when I was in grad school (many moons ago:).

5 out of 5 stars Clear concise outline of optics.......2005-12-31

This Schaum's outline is better than the expensive textbook by the same author on the same subject in many ways, and in my opinion stands alone as a guide on optics. It gets to the meat of optics via solving problems that range from simple to difficult, which is particularly attractive to engineers learning or reviewing this subject. To me, the only chapters that seemed a bit confusing were the first two on wave motion and on electromagnetic waves and photons. For that material you may need to consult another source. From that point onward, however, the outline couldn't be any better. The outline even has a chapter that introduces Fourier optics. This outline would make an excellent review or supplement for someone taking a course in Photonics that uses Saleh's "Fundamentals of Photonics". That textbook has virtually no solved problems in it whatsoever, and the first third of the book follows the material covered in this outline nicely.

        Book Description

In this day of digitalization, you can work within the technology of optics without having to fully understand the science behind it. However, for those who wish to master the science, rather than merely be its servant, it's essential to learn the nuances, such as those involved with studying fringe patterns produced by optical testing interferometers. When Interferogram Analysis for Optical Testing originally came to print, it filled the need for an authoritative reference on this aspect of fringe analysis. That it was also exceptionally current and highly accessible made its arrival even more relevant. Of course, any book on something as cutting edge as interferogram analysis, no matter how insightful, isn't going to stay relevant forever. The second edition of Interferogram Analysis for Optical Testing is designed to meet the needs of all those involved or wanting to become involved in this area of advanced optical engineering. For those new to the science, it provides the necessary fundamentals, including basic computational methods for studying fringe patterns. For those with deeper experience, it fills in the gaps and adds the information necessary to complete and update one's education. Written by the most experienced researchers in optical testing, this text discusses classical and innovative fringe analysis, principles of Fourier theory, digital image filtering, phase detection algorithms, and aspheric wavelength testing. It also explains how to assess wavefront deformation by calculating slope and local average curvature.

        Book Description

Diffractive optical elements (DOEs) are becoming more and more widely used in a braod range of fields, including telecommunications, optical computing, consumer electronics, laser material processing and the biomedical sciences, to manipulate light through micro-optical systems. In order to get the most out of such DOEs, knowledge of the design process, fabrication, packaging in a particular system, and operation is required.

Digital Diffractive Optics discusses in detail the design and simulation of DOEs, before considering the main fabrication techniques. The increasingly important CAD/CAM tool requirements for the production of DOEs are covered, and a chapter is devoted to the crucial area of systematic fabrication error compensation. Finally, the integration and use of DOEs in a number of different systems, including various opto-electronic and opto-mechanical systems, are discussed.

Digital Diffractive Optics will be of great interest to all those involved in the fields of optical engineering and photonics. It presents a clear view of the whole process, from design to fabrication and application, without overstressing the, often complex, mathematics, and will thus be accessible to postgraduate students and those entering the field, as well as more experienced engineers and scientists.

5 out of 5 stars Modern, Straight Forward and Useful Optics Book.......2001-09-30

I've been designing diffractive elements for about two years. I first started knowing almost nothing about DOEs (except that they worked on diffraction). Even after two years, and a couple of successful designs, I was still in the dark on some of the methods used in designing DOEs.

Bernard really puts a good book together. He starts with the very basics (diffraction), moves into designing DOEs (iterative and natural optimization methods, like GA and SA), and ends up with chapters on actually fabricating devices. He covers in very informative detail (like, say for the working engineer), and goes short of giving the shop away.

If you're tired of attending seminars on designing DOEs that just cover fourier diffraction principles, or books that really leave out the nitty-gritty, then Bernard's book is for you. There is an assumption that you have a decent understanding of optics, and are comfortable with at least two years of college math (calculus and DEs/PDEs).

          Book Description

Electron Diffraction in the Transmission Electron Microscope explains the basic methods of how to obtain images and patterns with the TEM, and how to interpret them. The TEMs are used in many labs, and allow users to explore the structure of a specimen of interest (e.g. a section through a particular material, crystal or tissue). This introductory-level guide looks at the patterns produced by diffracted electrons to study the appearance, orientation and structure of the sample. The book discusses useful case studies and examples to guide the new user and offers a user-friendly approach with simple explanations and informative illustrations.

          5 out of 5 stars A must-have classic for X-ray diffractionists.......2005-08-14

To the curious minds of today and tomorrow:

This book is an advanced treatment of x-ray diffraction, which should adorn the bookshelves of x-ray diffractionists.

It is a pleasure to see that such a diffraction classic is very affordable, thanks to Dover Publications. It is a "best buy" indeed since it offers a lot of substance for its price.

The uninitiated reader in X-ray diffractometry should approach it with caution, however. It is by no means a textbook.

Those who have a well founded working knowledge in X-ray diffraction, on the other hand, may want to read this book because it elaborates the underlying principles with utmost rigour.

As such, I highly recommend this book.

          Cheers,

          Dr. E

Well...this book is definitely a "must have" book on diffraction if you're interested in this field. Dr. Guiner, for those who are not familiar with diffraction, was one of the leading scientist in the field and contributed much to the development of x-ray diffractometry. The book is definitely not for the beginner. However, for someone who has made his/her initial steps into the world of x-ray crystallography, this book might be rewarding to read for it discusses the fundamentals rigorously. The book is very affordable as well, making it a very attractive buy indeed...I highly recommend it.
