5 out of 5 stars The Bible of the Field.......2007-03-24

When as a young physicist I started working on rocket nozzle design most of the material in this book had to be dug up from a paper here, a book there, or else it simply wasn't known. Now here's everything you need to know in a couple of chapters. And besides nozzle design, here in information on virtually every aspect of rockets from the design to the propellents, from concepts to testing. Most of the book is on conventional liquid or solid fuel chemical rockets, because that's where most of the action is today. There is a new chapter (from my older edition) on electrical propulsion.

The book is suitable for use as a textbook for either a one or two term course, or as an introductory book to an engineer now moving into the field, or as a reference book for the experienced. It is especially good to use when you need to come up to speed on some area of the business where you don't normally work.

The one weakness of the book is the lack of discussion on computers either in terms of engine control systems or of the design software that is avaiable. Next revision I guess.

5 out of 5 stars If you love rocket propulsion you must get this book.......2007-01-19

I have loved rocket propulsion in all its forms (real and imagined) since I was following the Apollo 11 mission on television. This book will help you with every aspect of rocketry whether for direct professional relevance, hobbyist development or whether you dream with many of us of solving the problems that will allow us (as so eloquently put by the late Carl Sagan) to "dip our toes in the cosmic ocean". I believe we must swim between the stars and the nuts and bolts foundations for doing it are in this book. Go get it. Lets do it.

5 out of 5 stars Rocket Scientists Use It Too.......2006-11-17

I started work with a rocket design group fresh out of a MS in mechanical engineering. One of the first things everybody told me was to pick up a copy of Sutton. It's a good thing I did, because I immediately started referring to it for just about every project I worked. After just a few months it became a dog eared, marked, and well used reference.

It's a few years later now, and I don't work with rockets full time any more. I've forgotten enough of the details that today when I was explaining a bit of rocketry to a coworker, out came Sutton again. It's still a great book.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic resource.......2006-02-20

This was a required test for a rocket propulsion class, but it has become an invaluable resource for many classes. Purchased for at least 20% less than other outlets.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have Textbook for every Aerospace Engineer.......2004-03-27

This is the single best book on rocket propulsion systems, covering both liquid and solid rocket engines, hybrid rocket systems, and a dedicated chapter on electric propulsion. The authors include excellent illustrations and graphs to enhance the text, and practical examples which help the reader to grasp the theory. After loaning a copy of this book for over two years from my library, i finally bought it! Definitely recommended to all engineers and scientists who want to expand into the area of rocket propulsion.

5 out of 5 stars A true chemical engineering classic.......2007-08-28

Transport Phenomenon by Bird, Stewart and Lightfoot is one of the most useful chemical engineering textbook ever written. For nearly five decades now, many chemical engineers have lived by what they learned first through this book. The revised edition makes the book current, though 1960 edition is great introduction to the mass, heat and energy and/or momentum transfer problems.

The basis idea of the book is simple: list the equations useful for a system of problems, say in mass transfer; provide set of assumptions used to arrive at those; suggest possible solutions to the differential equations for practical industry conditions; use correlations derived by researchers where real time data is unavailable and lastly, learn how to adapt solutions for different set of conditions. The book attempts to make problem solving into a set of instructions to be followed, and by sticking to the fundamental assumptions and equations allows one to attack a range of problems relevant to fields as diverse as diffusion transport, biochemical processes, condensation problems for atmospheric physics, chemical kinetics, heat conduction, petroleum extraction and flow of fluids relevant to many processing industries.

We often hailed it as the Bible of Chemical Engineering. Every now and then, (nearly a decade after we first read it) I still hear people say: this problem, or something like it, was in BSL, (the acronym awarded to the book after its authors). Be it Transport texts by Deen or Middleman typically used for graduate school courses, or Incompressible Flow by Patton, the recourse to understanding problems first hand through BSL is always rewarding.

The book comes with a number of solved and unsolved problems. There is no short-cut to becoming a good chemical engineer, except by mastering the art and science of attacking problems. By going through the book meticulously right in your first course, (for in most cases, this is the first chemical engineering text encountered), you can ensure that you will do well in your whole education as chemical engineer.

Recommended reference for all chemical engineers.

5 out of 5 stars Reintroducing an old friend in a new suit.......2007-07-22

Most chemical engineers grew up with BSL. For myself, I found out what the graduate students were using. The old red-back version was intimidating. It was hard to use. The calculus was, and is, generally over my head. But... after reading through a few problems, the mathematics seemed familiar, the approach seemed to explain all my questions and the solution was, if not directly applicable, one that I could borrow for a difficult problem.

I remember once working on a product development for Andrew Jergens. My goal was to estimate the production capacity of a stepwise batch process. Others would ultimately use my numbers to estimate the price of the product. I had to get it right! One step involved melting this wax, a synthetic whale wax, over an electric heater. I knew the BTU output but there were several physical constraints. After a few sleepless nights and pawing through the University of Cincinnati library I was stumped. Then, I started looking through BSL.Oui la! There is a problem on de-frosting turkeys ¯ a real life practical application of heat transfer; supposedly, this is how Birdseye came up with the table you see on the outside of turkey wrappings on Thanksgiving.

It did not take me long to see the application. I spent a morning doing lab experiments for my physical properties and the afternoon fitting the measurements to their procedure. The method worked.

The second edition has much better graphics and a good index. The index and table of contents in the first edition made the book unwieldy.

I recently became interested in calculating the heat-up time in a hydrolysis bed. One of the crucial problems was calculating h', the volumetric heat transfer coefficient (BTU/hr-cubic feet-F: h X l). There is an excellent method developed by Shumann in another great book: Kern's "Process Heat Transfer." BSL presents a method for estimating h that can be transformed into h' by:
h' = h X Ac/V, where Ac=cross area; V=volume of bed. With the old version, finding this section of the book was very time consuming. The second edition made it easy.

There is one downside of the 2nd edition. To make it easier to read, the publisher increased its length and width. Unfortunately, as experience has born out, this tends to make a book more prone to shearing along its binding. I intent to wrap this book in heavy plastic to add some reinforcement. I suggest you do likewise.

I will keep you posted as I continue to use this book. I may give my old red-back to some younger engineer ---to knaw on the edges before they ask me for the answer.

4 out of 5 stars Good book, but need solid background to understand.......2006-11-10

Overall this is a good book for learning transport phenomena, however, if you are lacking in some of the fundamentals (fluids, heat, etc) some of the steps in the examples don't make sense. Once you have a grasp on the fundamentals, the book is very useful in breaking down transport problems.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent source for basic understanding of Kalman Filtering.......2005-12-28

This book constitutes an excellent source for understanding the basic operation of the Global Positioning Systems (GPS). It also allows the reader to take the first steps towards understanding how the Kalman Filter is implemented in the estimation of drifting parameters of the GPS. The "Kalman Filter Basics" chapter is preceded by a description of the different errors that affect the GPS signals. Furthermore, this book includes sections on the Wide-Area Augmentation System, Inertial Navigation, and Differential GPS, which enables the understanding of these concepts and thus, provides the reader an overall perspective of the Global Positioning System.

The book also includes a detailed explanation of the characteristics of the GPS signal, as well as the design of the receiver and antennas.

Finally, details on the mathematical operations included throughout the chapters, are explained in three (3) Appendixes. Overall, this is a great book for understanding the overall performance of the Global Positioning System, and the relevant aspects which it entails.

Here are some quotes from a review of this book in GPS World, July 2001, pp 46-47, by Dr. John Angus, a consultant and researcher in the area of GPS-aided navigation systems, AND professor at Claremont Graduate University, Claremont, CA. Dr. Angus' credentials qualify him to review this book.

"Noteworthy is the comprehensiveness of the material on GPS, Kalman filtering and Kalman filter engineering, and the appendix on coordinate transforms...An instructor could easily develop a one-semester course on basic GPS or a full year course on GPS and inertial navigation, each of them "glued" together by the Kalman filter and enlivened by computer experiments with the MATLAB code provided."

"The writing...tends to be concise and the mathematics is kept to the minimum necessary to expose the theory and methods of filtering, GPS, and INS."

"...effectively addresses most of the basic engineering and performance issues relating to GPS/INS."

"...recommended for personal and professional libraries."

This is an application-oriented book, which as such, does not include detailed mathematical derivations. It does provide Kalman filter algorithms (on floppy and in text), but if one needs the theory of Kalman filtering behind these, one needs to use a Kalman filtering text, such as Kalman Filtering Theory & Practice Using MATLAB (Second Edition), Wiley 2001, by Grewal and Andrews. The latter book gives all of the methods in square root filtering algorithms and derivations and more. If the "Asian Reviewer" is most interested in Kalman filtering, he/she would be better advised to buy a book on Kalman filtering.

Of course the experience of the authors is great but none of it you can use either in your study or research. It is impossible to learn about Kalman filtering from this book as well as to improve your knowledge in this area. Book is intended for professionals in this area but professionals will not need it. Many intersting facts but no detailed information. For example one can know that the square root filtering method came from James Potter but there is nothing more about this method from this book. Otherwise you have to study sources of the software (included). Book is written as advertizing of author's skills and nothing else. Too much about nothing ...

    Book Description

An ideal text for graduate level courses in transport phenomena for chemical engineers, Analysis of Transport Phenomena provides a unified treatment of momentum, heat, and mass transfer, emphasizing the concepts and analytical techniques that apply to all of these transport processes. The first few chapters establish the tools needed for later analyses while also covering heat and mass transfer in stationary media. The similarities among the molecular or diffusive transport mechanisms--heat conduction, diffusion of chemical species, and viscous transfer of momentum--are highlighted. Conservation equations for scalar quantites are derived first in general form, and then used to obtain the governing equations for total mass, energy, and chemical species. The scaling and order-of-magnitude concepts which are crucial in modeling are also introduced. Certain key methods for solving the differential equations in transport problems, including similarity, perturbation, and finite Fourier transform techniques, are described using conduction and diffusion problems as examples. Following chapters are devoted to fluid mechanics, beginning with fundamental equations for momentum transfer and then discussing unidirectional flow, nearly unidirectional (lubrication) flow, creeping flow, and laminar boundary layer flow. Forced-convection heat and mass transfer in laminar flow, multicomponent energy and mass transfer, free convection, and turbulence are also covered. The appendix summarizes vector and tensor operations and relations involving various coordinate systems. Based on twenty years of teaching and extensive class testing, Analysis of Transport Phenomena offers students both extensive coverage of the topic and inclusion of modern examples from bioengineering, membrane science, and materials processing. It is mathematically self-contained and is also unique in its treatment of scaling and approximation techniques and its presentation of the finite Fourier transform method for solving partial differential equations.

5 out of 5 stars Good grad level text.......2007-04-30

Very good graduate level text. Not an introductory text. Like some of the other reviews say, the author does not spend much time with the basics, however if that is what you are after, look at B-S-L Transport Phenomena.

3 out of 5 stars Profound insight, omits mundane and essential details/steps.......2007-03-26

This book, so far, is well organized and provides a most excellent approach to transport phenomena. The author evidently has a deep understanding of the topic.

On the negative side, this book could do with some revising. Example problems should have a better "ansatz," that is, a more clearly-defined starting point for the analysis of problems in transport (i.e. should we consider balance and constitutive equations simultaneous at the start of every problem?). When working out Example problems, equations throughout the chapter do not seem to be invoked in any order, so it can be hard to follow the author's train of thought. Another problem which cost me a couple hours of hard "figuring" was trying to determine the motivation for stating "C[A]" as evaluated at "L" (see p. 51-52). To summarize, much of the student's understanding of the subject is taken for granted (perhaps to be expected, since this is a graduate-level text on the subject).

I agree with the review that says this book would be invaluable for research and obtaining a deep understanding of transport phenomena. This book would be perfect if the basic principles of transport phenomena were repeatedly touched upon (one example is the the equations on p. 4, which are mentioned once and used without citation or warning in several examples) for the first few chapters (and THEN steps could be skipped and the reader's knowledge can be taken for granted). Then, anyone with enough mathematical aptitude could obtain a very deep understanding of transport phenomena by reading this book.

4 out of 5 stars Good 1st transport book for grads.......2005-04-22

I got so involved with this book that I virtually wrote notes on every single page. The amount of useful information in this book has exceeded the tolerance the binding has for my handling. And I even took good care of it too! After my organic chemistry text, I'd say that I spent more time with this book than any other on my shelf.

    5 out of 5 stars Briliant!!.......2004-02-08

This book is well organized, well detailed, and well articulated. The lessons are useful and the text approachable for an academic work. I've read / had to use many other textbooks in my pursuit of a chemical engineering education and this is the best. I give it a whole-hearted recommendation for any serious student.

    2 out of 5 stars I heart this book.......2003-11-20

This book would be better if the author didnt have a tendancy to leave steps out of most his examples. Problems at the end of the chapters can be really difficult. I highly suggest using another book, or atleast having a good undergraduate text to supplement this one.

    Book Description

Transportation Economics explores the efficient use of society's scarce resources for the movement of people and goods. This book carefully examines transportation markets and standard economic tools, how these resources are used, and how the allocation of society resources affects transportation activities. This textbook is unique in that it uses a detailed analysis of econometric results from current transportation literature to provide an integrated collection of theory and application. Its numerous case studies illustrate the economic principles, discuss testable hypotheses, analyze econometric results, and examine each study's implications for public policy. These features make this a well-developed introduction to the foundations of transportation economics.Additional case studies on a spectrum of domestic and international transportation topics available at http://www.blackwellpublishers.co.uk/mccarthy in order to keep students abreast of recent developments in the field and their implications for public policy. The paperback edition of this book is not available from Blackwell in the US or Canda.

This is a great book for students, researchers, and professionals such as analysts and consultants!! If you are a student with Eco 101 background, this book can guide you through learning the theory and applying the theory to analyze issues in transportation decision-making. If you need to write a course paper for your class, you can simply read one of the Case Studies in the book, and then conduct your own research from there. It will save you a lot of time! If you are a researcher or in research business, you will find that the theory and cases in the book cover most of the important issues in transportation economics. The Case Study is more than a literature review, because it not only presents the conclusions as most literature reviews would do, it actually lists the models and equations and explains how the models are specified. It is really a great book to have handy.

If Professor McCarthy decides to release a new edition sometime down the road, I would wish that he expand the investment chapters and add a new chapter on transportation financing.

Quantum Kinetics in Transport and Optics of Semiconductors deals with the quantum kinetics for transport in low-dimensional microstructures and for ultrashort laser-pulse spectroscopy. The nonequilibrium Green function theory is described and used for the derivation of the quantum kinetic equations. Numerical methods for the solution of the retarded quantum kinetic equations are discussed and results are presented for quantum high-field transport and for mesoscopic transport phenomena. Quantum beats, polarization decay and non-Markovian behaviour are treated for femtosecond spectroscopy on a microscopic basis.

    Book Description

“In her new chic outfit, she looks like anything but a stewardess working. But work she does. Hard, too. And you hardly know it.” So read the text of a 1969 newspaper advertisement for Delta Airlines featuring a picture of a brightly smiling blond stewardess striding confidently down the aisle of an airplane cabin to deliver a meal.

From the moment the first stewardesses took flight in 1930, flight attendants became glamorous icons of femininity. For decades, airlines hired only young, attractive, unmarried white women. They marketed passenger service aloft as an essentially feminine exercise in exuding charm, looking fabulous, and providing comfort. The actual work that flight attendants did—ensuring passenger safety, assuaging fears, serving food and drinks, all while conforming to airlines’ strict rules about appearance—was supposed to appear effortless; the better that stewardesses performed by airline standards, the more hidden were their skills and labor. Yet today flight attendants are acknowledged safety experts; they have their own unions. Gone are the no-marriage rules, the mandates to retire by thirty-two. In Femininity in Flight, Kathleen M. Barry tells the history of flight attendants, tracing the evolution of their glamorized image as ideal women and their activism as trade unionists and feminists.

Barry argues that largely because their glamour obscured their labor, flight attendants unionized in the late 1940s and 1950s to demand recognition and respect as workers and self-styled professionals. In the 1960s and 1970s, flight attendants were one of the first groups to take advantage of new laws prohibiting sex discrimination. Their challenges to airlines’ restrictive employment policies and exploitive marketing practices (involving skimpy uniforms and provocative slogans such as “fly me”) made them high-profile critics of the cultural mystification and economic devaluing of “women’s work.” Barry combines attention to the political economy and technology of the airline industry with perceptive readings of popular culture, newspapers, industry publications, and first-person accounts. In so doing, she provides a potent mix of social and cultural history and a major contribution to the history of women’s work and working women’s activism.

5 out of 5 stars First-class analysis of an underappreciated position.......2007-03-31

This gen-x feminist has certainly flown on more than my share of flights thanks to airline deregulation (1978), but having grown up after sex discrimination laws were passed, I also did not previously have the full understanding of all the historical nuances which went into achieving legislative battles making the skies sexism free.

It was interesting to read how the stewardess position (as it was then called) became so tightly controlled, ironically having originally developed in an era when there were few other 'interesting' employment opportunities available to women. By the 1950's, the airlines had codes of stewardess conduct which look a million times stricter than anything handed down at my workplaces.

Expected to retire at age 35, a woman had to meet certain mandatory height and weight requirements, and could not be married or have any children in order to successfully perform her duties to her customers at all times. Barry's research methodologies expressly delineate though that the airlines, reflective of the larger society's biases, only hired white unmarried girls for these 'jobs' but tellingly did not treat them in the appropriate manner an employer would treat their employees.

A stewardess was expected to thanklessly fulfill many tasks simultaneously, mother, sex-pot/kitten, nurse---but in the cruel twist of irony, she also was not welcomed in the union ranks as an equal after undergoing all of these horrific working conditions, the women were expected to continue letting male union leaders represent them as had been the previous tradition.

Rather than be docile, that ongoing disparate treatment inadvertently galvanized the women into taking action for each other. Sisterhood wasn't a `trendy slogan' each other was all they had.

In the 1970's. a organization called Stewardesses for Women's Rights protested the airline industry's increasingly sexist treatment of women employees and that organization also joined the national campaign for the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment. I'm certain that airline officials were not intending to create a crop of highly creative and very ticked off feminist activists!

      Book Description

A highly-accessible introduction to mass transfer problems in environmental engineering and science.

Chemical transport processes in environmental systems are exceptionally complex and notoriously difficult to model. Unlike equations derived for homogenous, well-defined environments in chemical production, for example, equations derived for environmental systems rely upon calculations made for highly heterogeneous, often poorly defined environments consisting of a great many phases and chemicals. Unfortunately, texts on chemical transport usually focus on problems related to chemical process engineering, making it exceedingly difficult for environmental engineers to model processes in natural and engineered systems.

This book provides practicing engineers and graduate students with a clear, comprehensive introduction to transport processes in environmental systems. Structured to suit a one-semester, introductory course on the subject, it begins with the basics of molecular diffusion and chemical partitioning and then progresses to more advanced topics including dispersion, particle transport, fractals, and biofilms. Throughout, the author places an equal emphasis on both engineered and natural systems. Each chapter draws on realistic examples and problems to reinforce important concepts.

Environmental Transport Processes is an ideal first textbook for environmental engineering students who have never studied mass transport, as well as undergraduate and graduate chemical engineering students with little or no experience in environmental topics. It is also a valuable working resource for professionals in those fields, and all researchers interested in transport processes.

5 out of 5 stars Timely topic, great pedagogy.......2007-06-13

The author (SD) claims that this is a physics book written for engineers. Maybe that explains why, unlike the authors of most physics books written for physicists, he doesn't seem particularly concerned with elegance, concision, abstract generality or showing how clever he is in this book. Apparently, his main concern is to help you understand stuff. And interesting stuff it is, too.

The narrative arc of the book is to show you how to get from a particle in a box to Ohm's Law, as instantiated in nanoscale transistors. The path to doing this is already laid out in the first chapter, using a "toy" level of analysis. The next nine chapters lay out building blocks for attacking the problem using Green's function (GF) techniques, which are a bit more modern and versatile than the transmission formalism favored in the past (including by SD in a previous book). The whole picture is put together in Chapters 11 and 12, followed by an appendix that shows (albeit quite tersely in comparison to the rest of the book) how the same problem is dealt with using a second-quantization (2Q) GF formalism. The fact many pieces of this arc are repeated at successively deeper levels of analysis is very helpful. So too are SD's "big picture" introductions at the beginning of each chapter, and at the beginnings of the longer subchapters.

Throughout, SD pauses to describe in words and pictures the physics behind pretty much each term of each equation -- a de-mystification that most authors of physics texts seem to avoid as if it were blasphemy. I was especially impressed when SD used these opportunities to allude to some deeper and more general issues, such as how you get from time-reversible equations to irreversible physics. In fact the whole book serves as an applied introduction to non-equilibrium stat mech, a cutting-edge subject usually reserved for abstract theoretical treatment, or the last few pages of a conventional textbook. SD also foregrounds some basic points that are often buried in or missing from other texts, such as that the Schroedinger equations do not explain why atoms emit light, and why "optical" phonons are called that. (This latter point had really bugged me when I took a course in solid state years ago, so while reading this book I re-checked 7 or 8 solid state texts within reach, including Ziman, and found that only Kittel and Ashcroft & Mermin bothered to explain this point, and so casually (K) or vaguely (A&M) that you'd hardly notice.)

I was especially struck by the book's attention to modeling transistor contacts and how they interact with the channel. In the last few years this has become a big issue in organic electronics, as researchers have found that many aspects of device behavior were far more dependent on the contacts than they'd previously appreciated (kind of a let-down after going to the trouble of synthesizing some exotic channel material). That said, though, note that the book's POV is restricted to inorganic crystalline semiconductors, and I don't claim to be smart enough to see how easy it is to extend the book's methods to organic devices.

A couple of caveats. Although my copy says it was "reprinted with corrections 2006", there are still a lot of typos (none too terrible, though). More significant is that many of the exercises rely on your having access to MATLAB or some other math program. If you're not attached to an academic institution or didn't aquire a copy of such a program while you were so attached, those exercises probably will be inaccessible to you (unless you're willing to spring for ~ $10E2.6-$10E3.3 for a personal copy, depending on the program). Contrary to another review, there isn't anything about fabrication techniques, despite brief references to quantum dots and nanowires. And while the blurb on the back cover says "No prior acquaintance with quantum mechanics is assumed," and although SD does start from a description of the Schroedinger equation in Chapter 2, the QM intensity accelerates rapidly from there. So I wouldn't rely on learning the relevant QM from this book. (However, it might be possible to enjoy this book before you've finished a class in solid state.) For a next edition, I would look forward to (i) a somewhat less rushed description of transmission formalism in sec. 9.4 (one of the few places in the book where EEs may have a real advantage over others), (ii) a wordier discussion of the 2Q formalism in the appendix, and (iii) a more explicit discussion of Fock space methods, which seem to play an uncredited role in the discussion of multi-electron systems in Chap.3. But even as-is, this is a very stimulating and enjoyable book.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent Condition.......2006-08-26

The book is in great condition and was ok for the price. Ad i couldnt find it in any of my university book stores

4 out of 5 stars useful theoretical tools for designing devices.......2006-03-06

For over thirty years, Green's functions have been used to calculate effects in solid state physics. But usually for pure research, destined to be written up in scientific journals. Here, Datta offers some outreach. There is indeed quite a lot of theory presented. But there is a corresponding emphasis on the latest materials fabrication abilities, including the making of nanotubes and quantum dots.

All these have (presumably) interesting and practical applications. So if you want to design novel devices from a theoretical standpoint, the maths tools developed in the text can be very useful.
