Book Description

". . . dipping into this collection is much like opening a holiday gift and discovering a marvelous little toy that then holds your attention by some curious performance. . . . This book precisely reflects the way science education should be, especially at the introductory level." --From the foreword

Here is a collection of physics demonstrations costing very little to produce yet illustrating key concepts in amazingly simple and playful ways. Intended for instructors, students, and curious lay readers, these demonstrations make use of easily accessible, everyday items: food coloring and glycerine swirled and then "unmixed" in a container demonstrate aspects of the entropy law; raw eggs thrown with full force at a sheet but not breaking illustrate Newton's second law (f=ma); and the reflection off a glass Christmas tree ball is the focus of an explanation on "turning the world inside out." Many of the demonstrations are either new or include innovative twists on old ideas, as in the author's simplified version of the classic "Monkey and Hunter" problem, which substitutes "diluted gravity" on an inclined plane for large apparatus. Each demonstration outlines the objective, the equipment needed, and the procedure, including, in many instances, ways for a teacher to perform the demonstration on an overhead projector. Throughout the book concrete examples are accompanied by enough theoretical background to enhance a reader's basic understanding of physical principles. Lab instructors will find that demonstrations containing a quantitative component work well as mini- experiments and as ways to illustrate the results of calculations. These diverse and flexible demonstrations will serve a wide range of educational levels, from middle school physical science to university physics.

5 out of 5 stars Great detailed demos.......2001-12-16

This is definetely the best Ehrlich book I've read. The demos are great because he puts alot of thought into making them classroom friendly (there's alot using overhead projectors)and detailed. Most of the details should only be used with high school level and up, but most of the experiments are good anyways. He uses sound, detailed physics - not the vague or sometimes incorrect explanations you find in the lower budget books. There's also a great organization scheme that makes everything easy to find and indicates which experiments are appropriate for certain situations.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as its title.......1999-12-30

When I saw the title of the book, I thought it would be a good aid for me in my highschool physics teachings. Some of the demos are not explained in detail, and it is hard to find (at least for me)some materials that are listed by the author for the demo. However, the ideas have been serving as the starting points for me, after some modifications (and spending a few minutes to understand the setting) I could use them in my class. Alright, it is not a tough job, even may be helpfull, but be aware of the fact that you might find some demos hard to implement.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Physics teachers.......2007-04-22

I first got this book while student teaching, and taught by the author, Norman Herr. A most excellent teacher. His book is quite useful and highly recommended for any physics teacher.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for teaching a homeschool co-op.......2007-03-12

I bought this as a source for ideas for hands-on activities for my homeschool co-op class. The explanations are straight-forward and the activities are easily created with found objects and home supplies.

My only caution is that you need to have an understanding of the mathematics of physics first. This may not be enough of a text to stand on its own for a non-science, non-math person.

5 out of 5 stars A necessity for any Physics or Physical Science teacher........1998-04-27

This book is packed with dozens of demonstrations and lab activities for every physics concept taught in the upper grades 7-12. Can be used to supplement the textbook or on its own. Each section (Ex: Electricity) has a brief 1-2 page overview, followed by real life examples and activities to understand the concepts. Excellent for "stepping-up" a very basic physical science text. Illustrations and reproducible worksheets.

Book Description

Interactive Lecture Demonstrations (ILDs) are designed to enhance conceptual learning in physics lectures through active engagement of students in the learning process. Students observe real physics demonstrations, make predictions about the outcomes on a prediction sheet, and collaborate with fellow students by discussing their predictions in small groups. Students then examine the results of the live demonstration (often displayed as real-time graphs using computer data acquisition tools), compare these results with their predictions, and attempt to explain the observed phenomena. ILDs are available for all of the major topics in the introductory physics course and can be used within the traditional structure of an introductory physics course. All of the printed materials needed to implement them are included in this book.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-02-11

Physics demonstrations serve as an incredibly useful tool to illustrate difficult concepts to beginning or elementary students. The latter group of students typically comes to the subject with prior conceptions on the motion of objects. Because they are concrete, demonstrations help to convince students that physics applies to the real world, instead of being merely a collection of equations written on a chalkboard. Physical intuition, that elusive concept that is usually thought of as a gift, can be improved by the use of demonstrations, as evidence from the literature on physics education reveals.

This book is about demonstrations but unlike other books on the subject it makes heavy use of the computer in the actual demonstrations. Called an `interactive' approach by the authors, it emphasizes an `active learning' environment. Such an environment they contrast with a `passive' one in the first section of the book. The authors attest to the utility of using interactive lecture demonstrations and give detailed discussion on the evidence that supports their contention of definite learning gains in their use. Throughout the book the reader/instructor will see clearly how the computer can be integrated into many of the standard physics demonstrations. The authors describe an `eight-step' procedure for doing interactive lecture demonstrations which is followed consistently from one demonstration to another. The pages in the book can easily removed for grading by the instructor/lecturer/professor.

This reviewer, who has left physics teaching but not physics, can attest to the power of demonstrations in the teaching of physics. Not only that they are just plain fun to do. And physics demonstrations are like gravity. They pull us down to Earth, away from the lofty clouds of the purely formal, breathing life into our equations, giving them substance and validity. Requiring only brief moments of time they serve our quest for didactic clarity. With a flip of a switch or a sleight of the hand, they induce the gasp of our audience. Then physical laws become real and unintimidating, intrenching themselves in the spectator's memory, reminding them of the power of pure thought transformed into concrete, functioning reality. They can seduce and delight, and they induce an insatiable curiosity to explore, to ask, to inquire, into that subtle but understandable entity we call Nature.

Book Description

The Science of Radio explains the working and charts the development of the ordinary AM radio receiver, which has become an integral part of our lives in the 80 years since its invention. As well as showing the reader the growth of technology in this century, the story of AM radio can provide a unique insight into the basics of electrical engineering, making the primary concepts and applications visual and comprehensible. Taking a "top down" approach to the subject, Nahin starts with a broad overview of radio as a sociological and technological phenomenon, then describes specific advances in research that made radio possible, moving through deeper levels of technical detail as the story progresses. Readers will see how various concepts and theories are combined to achieve specific practical results. And the book's "just in time" method of introducing mathematical and physical theory only as needed to understand a topic, helps readers gain a firm grasp of often elusive material. By focusing specifically on the workings of AM radio, The Science of Radio offers both a fascinating history of radio as an information and entertainment medium and a practical, applications-oriented introduction to electrical engineering. This second edition, written the same witty and accessible style as the first, also includes illustrative examples based on the popular MATLAB and Electronics Workbench programs now commonly used in engineering courses, as well as new technical material on differential amplifiers, more end-of-chapters problems, and additional historical discussion. About the author Paul J. Nahin is Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of New Hampshire, and is the author of Oliver Heaviside: Sage In Solitude (IEEE Press); Time Machines: Time Travel In Physics, Metaphysics And Science Fiction, (AIP Press); and An Imaginary Tale; The Story Of The Square Root Of Minus One, (Princeton University Press).

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Written Books on AM Radio.......2004-10-25

As a physics student and a beginner analog circuit designer with an interest in RF circuit design, I can highly recommend this book. Most books on RF design simply jump to quickly and assume a bunch of prerequsite knowledge, and also assume you don't need to understand the physics (or science) of what is going on, but only understand the models to be used to plug numbers into. I've had a hard time putting this book down, it is really great. It will definitely help you gain an intutive understanding of HOW IT ALL WORKS! Also, after reading all about spark radios, I discovered that my uncle was a spark radio operator in WWII! Now I really understand what he did!

5 out of 5 stars With or without Matlab, it is still the best radio book.......2004-06-27

Mr.Nahin, could you please write more books like this... ?

3 out of 5 stars a good book with bad opinions.......2002-08-29

This is an excellent book which combines the history, the
mathematics and the physics of radio. It is not a textbook
and you need to know calculus and physics to understand its
technical chapters. It has ten appendices, they explain the
"bottom" material or background needed in the book. However,
the all book is well written and it has an excellent presentation.
I think that the author's opinions about the
radio developers such as Marconi, DeForest and Tesla
are out of place in a book like this. So I gave three starts.

5 out of 5 stars Well done.......2001-08-13

I have been a fan of Paul Nahin's writting since I came across his book an imaginary tale ... In this text he clearly describes the history as well as the EE of radio. It is an excellent book and I especially enjoyed the appendices and matlab and electronics workbench examples.

          Book Description

As a means of conveying the excitement of science from one generation to the next, the lecture demonstration is one of the most powerful tools at the disposal of the modern science teacher. The interest of the young aspiring scientist is aroused not by dull textbook recitation, but by the enthusiastic lecturer with a range of demonstrations that illustrate the importance of science in the real world. In this lucid and entertaining book, Professor Taylor explores the origins of lecture demonstration and its development to the present day, emphasizing the underlying principles and the lessons to be learned. Set alongside the work of the most eminent of his predecessors, Michael Faraday and Lawrence Bragg, Taylor's book should find a worthy place among the literature of popular science. The Art and Science of Lecture Demonstration will be useful to all those with a serious amateur or professional interest in the teaching of science, from primary school to university and beyond.
