Book Description

Carbon nanotubes are exceptionally interesting from a fundamental research point of view. Many concepts of one-dimensional physics have been verified experimentally such as electron and phonon confinement or the one-dimensional singularities in the density of states; other 1D signatures are still under debate, such as Luttinger-liquid behavior. Carbon nanotubes are chemically stable, mechanically very strong, and conduct electricity. For this reason, they open up new perspectives for various applications, such as nano-transistors in circuits, field-emission displays, artificial muscles, or added reinforcements in alloys.

This text is an introduction to the physical concepts needed for investigating carbon nanotubes and other one-dimensional solid-state systems. Written for a wide scientific readership, each chapter consists of an instructive approach to the topic and sustainable ideas for solutions. The former is generally comprehensible for physicists and chemists, while the latter enable the reader to work towards the state of the art in that area. The book gives for the first time a combined theoretical and experimental description of topics like luminescence of carbon nanotubes, Raman scattering, or transport measurements. The theoretical concepts discussed range from the tight-binding approximation, which can be followed by pencil and paper, to first-principles simulations. We emphasize a comprehensive theoretical and experimental understanding of carbon nanotubes including

- general concepts for one-dimensional systems
- an introduction to the symmetry of nanotubes
- textbook models of nanotubes as narrow cylinders
- a combination of ab-initio calculations and experiments
- luminescence excitation spectroscopy linked to Raman spectroscopy
- an introduction to the 1D-transport properties of nanotubes
- effects of bundling on the electronic and vibrational properties and
- resonance Raman scattering in nanotubes.

3 out of 5 stars Does the world need yet another carbon nanotube book?.......2004-07-08

Maybe, but I'm not sure this is it. It comes VERY close though. My complaint (which prevents me from buying my own copy) is that far too many important concepts are mentioned in passing with the reader sent to the literature for the details. For $130, a bit more completeness would be nice. I realize "serious" workers in the field will call me lazy for wanting a $130 book to be as self-contained as possible. So be it...

5 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook.......2007-03-19

This excellent textbook presents the basic concepts of Nanotechnology and Nanophysics in a well structured, solid manner, without leaving any aspects unattached. It is updated, with references to recently published work in top rated journals. The main advantage of the book is the wide spectrum of the issues covered, ranging from biology to quantum computing, allowing future applications to be tackled by the students easier.

4 out of 5 stars fundamental approach to the field.......2005-01-03

Wolf explains from the vantage of a physicist what exactly is nanophysics, and what the engineering implications might be. He describes how the size of atoms, at 0.1 nanometers or so, sets a natural lower limit, and how the scale of nanometers lets us see and use quantum phenomena for designing new materials.

A solid background in quantum mechanics would not be remiss, before trying this book. Wolf offers a bottoms-up approach to understanding the various branches of nanotech research, which is currently burgeoning.

5 out of 5 stars A comprehensive polymer physics book!.......2003-01-02

This is a comprehensive polymer physics book, each chapter is well written with adequate depth of coverage. Most definitely the book one must pick to delve into dynamics, thermodynamics, scattering and crystallization, and get to the level of appreciating the complexity and beauty of current research and understanding in the field of polymer physics. Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars A Decent, Instructive Book for Serious Students.......2001-05-26

I'm no expert on polymers, but I've been exposed to a little on the subject through my work and classes, so I picked this up on sale. The beginnings of the chapters seem informative for one who wants a soundbite rather than the full meaty treatment. On a handful of occasions I've found a few numbers and figures from the book useful.

However, this is not a book for a beginner who wants to gain a little familiarity of the subject without serious study (not like, say, Saleh and Teich's optics book, where one can pick a topic and learn a little about it). When he decides to delve into theory the derivations can only be understood by sitting down and going through them by hand. It's not that steps are skipped or any other such atrocious practice, but simply that this is a book for people working hard to understand and join the field, not outsiders who want to gain some familiarity with it.

So, I'd say it's meaty but understandable for beginners who are serious about studying polymer physics, but not for people like me who encounter polymers from time to time and would like to gain a passing familiarity with the field. Also, it seems like a good reference even for experts, with the wealth of figures and charts and numbers and derivations.

Book Description

Fractals and surfaces are two of the most widely-studied areas of modern physics. In fact, most surfaces in nature are fractals. In this book, Drs. Barabási and Stanley explain how fractals can be successfully used to describe and predict the morphology of surface growth. The authors begin by presenting basic growth models and the principles used to develop them. They next demonstrate how models can be used to answer specific questions about surface roughness. In the second half of the book, they discuss in detail two classes of phenomena: fluid flow in porous media and molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). In each case, the authors review the model and analytical approach, and present experimental results. This book is the first attempt to unite the subjects of fractals and surfaces, and it will appeal to advanced undergraduate and graduate students in condensed matter physics and statistical mechanics. Because of the technological importance of MBE, it will also be of interest to scientists, particularly materials scientists, working in industry and research. 5 out of 5 stars Good on self affine scaling.......2004-04-14

I'm not into surfaces and have only used a small part of this book for one purpose: for an introduction to self affine scaling. The topic is presented very systematically, with nice examples. Especially nice is the binomial model of multiaffine scaling. Multiaffine scaling is supposed to appear in "soft" fluid turbulence and is often mislabeled multifractal scaling, which is a horse of a different color altogether!

5 out of 5 stars Fractal Concepts in Surface Growth.......2001-05-16

This is the first book I have so far encountered on interface growth to treat the subject in a simple, intuitive and entertaining manner. All the basic mathematical concepts are explained, the book is easy to read and contains plenty of illustrations and examples from real life. Barabasi and Stanley show how processes ranging from accumulation of snow on car windows, to bacterial colony growth on agar surfacees, are governed by similiar mathematical laws. Exercises are conceptual as well as mathematical, with many questions asking for discussion or further research. This book is essential for novices and experts alike.

5 out of 5 stars A complete treatise of lasers and related subjects.......2006-04-30

The 3rd edition of this comprehensive book is revised, updated and extended. W. Demtr?der covers almost everything about laser spectroscopy in this voluminous masterpiece.

The book starts with basics of lasers, optical aspects of lasers. There is a large chapter allotted for laser instrumentation, for those who want to learn about the technical features. A lot of informative discussions are given in regards to generation and manipulation of lasers. Recent advances and innovations are also mentioned. A large bibliography accompanies the book, for those who want to delve into further details.

Diagrams are very useful in general. Not all mathematical derivations were given explicitly. The reader is assumed to have some fundamental knowledge of modern physics, optics and lasers. If you follow the book from the beginning to end, you will see that the subjects are built upon preceding sections, which is pedagogically useful.

This book is recommended to those who want to gain a general, comprehensive and profound comprehension of laser spectroscopy. For more detailed and focused topics, one needs to consult more specialized books.

Overall, this is an essential and high-quality book.

5 out of 5 stars Good reference book.......2004-02-18

This is a very complete introduction book to laser spectroscopy. The thing I like best about this book is clarity. The author lays down basic principles of a set-up in one or two pages, supplemented with illustrations. First 5 chapters are about instruments. Then it is followed by 9 chapters of introduction of different types of laser spectroscopy. The last chapter contains several real-life applications of spectroscopy.

The difference between 2nd and 3rd editions is small. I think only about 10-15 sections are changed. Very few changes in the first 12 chapters. Among the new stuffs, CRDS and frequency combing seem interesting. I skipped the update on the last chapter. I think there is no need to buy the new edition if your cash supply is limited.

4 out of 5 stars Good reference book on spectroscopy.......2001-02-14

This book contains most of the optical spectroscopic methods currently used. A highly recommended book for anyone who wants an introduction to research level spectroscopic methods.

5 out of 5 stars great book.......1999-12-06

It is a great book that I read until now about Laser Spectroscopy. It is a most useful book for me in my education and researchs .

      5 out of 5 stars good book.......2005-01-26

compare to 'basic notions of condensed matter physics', this book is much easier to understand. u do not need background in solid state physics even. but a thorough mastery of quantum mechanics is assumed. otherwise, u will be turned to ur quantum book very often.

unlike the other solid state or condensed matter book, this book just treat those advanced level materials, like band theory in the presence of pertubrbing fields, elementary excitations, quasi-particles. all those concepts are intruduced in a comprehensive way that i can understand and the materials are arranged systematically (it is partly b/c prof. Anderson does not aim to cover everything in this thin book, just some concepts, as the title indicated).

another interesting thing about this book is that 2 Nobel prizes are related to it. prof. Anderson himself got oone. Sir Josephson, after attending Anderson's lecture in Cambridge with this note (the book is actually lecture note), got a Nobel prize as well.

          Book Description

Concepts in Surface Physics presents a tutorial treatment of the main concepts and phenomena of the physics of crystal surfaces. Emphasis is placed on simplified calculations - and the corresponding detailed analytical derivations - that are able to throw light on the most important physical mechanisms. More rigorous techniques, which often require a large amount of computer time, are also explained. The topics treated include thermodynamic and statistical properties of clean nd adsorbate-covered surfaces, atomic structure, vibrational properties, electronic structure, and the theory of physisorption and chemisorption. As well as including some improvements on the original book, this second edition has been supplemented with problems to encourage students to investigate the subject more thoroughly.
