The easiest explanation of interior point linear programming.......2004-08-10
There are basically 2 well-developed practical methods that dominate the solution methods known for solving linear programming (linear optimization) problems on the computer. The first one is the "Simplex Method" which was first developed in the 1940s but has since evolved into an efficient method through the use of many algorithmic and memory storage tricks. The other methods are much newer, starting in 1984, and are called "Interior-Point Methods". Interior-Point Methods are actually subdivided into many possible variations, thus making this field confusing to the newcomer. During the last decade, the Interior-Point Methods have matured and the picture is now much clearer. This book is perhaps the easiest one I know that explains some of the best performing Interior-Point Methods. Should you desire more introductory material about linear programming, an excellent companion to the above book would be "Optimization in Operations Research" by Rardin, although Rardin has only one chapter about Interior-Point Methods (I haven't read this book, but the reviews sound like this book is the best general introduction to linear programming and other optimization problems). It's tempting to say that you should learn the Simplex Method first before going on to Interior-Point methods--but I'm sure there are others who would disagree. As far as I know, the older Simplex Method can still be quite competitive--some problems are solved faster by the Simplex Method while other problems are solved faster using Interior-Point Methods. Nevertheless, this is a dynamic field of research and what is now true about the comparisons between these 2 methods can easily become false in the near future.
Wright is always right.......2004-04-04
Excelent book, a must-have for everyone that has interest on the subject.
Excellent Book.......2000-04-20
Very accurate and detailed algorithm. Easy to be used in the real world application.
Book Description
This book contains a modern treatment of production economics from a dual perspective, with a special emphasis on recent developments in the field. The book prepares the reader to apply the tools and concepts of the dual approach production economics to real world problems and data sets. Among other topics covered are flexible function forms, aggregation across inputs and outputs using the theory of separable structures, aggregation over economic optimizing firms, the representation of multioutput technologies, and the analysis and measurement of technical change from both a primal and dual perspective.

Excellent reference source.......2003-02-01
This book is an excellent reference guide for the experienced and inexperienced production economist. The last chapter is essentially a recap of the other six chapters, so if you're short on time, that's all you need. But, reading the first six will give a better idea of what he's really talking about. I recommend it highly.
Book Description
In modern theoretical physics, gauge field theories are of great importance since they keep internal symmetries and account for phenomena such as spontaneous symmetry breaking, the quantum Hall effect, charge fractionalization, superconductivity and supergravity. This monograph discusses specific examples of self-dual gauge field structures, including the Chern--Simons model, the abelian--Higgs model, and Yang--Mills gauge field theory.
The author builds a foundation for gauge theory and self-dual vortices by introducing the basic mathematical language of gauge theory and formulating examples of Chern-Simons-Higgs theories (in both abelian and non-abelian settings). Thereafter, the Electroweak theory and self-gravitating Electroweak strings are examined. The final chapters treat elliptic problems involving Chern—Simmons models, concentration-compactness principles, and Maxwell—Chern—Simons vortices.
Many open questions still remain in the field and are examined in this work in connection with Liouville-type equations and systems. The goal of this text is to form an understanding of self-dual solutions arising in a variety of physical contexts and thus is ideal for graduate students and researchers interested in partial differential equations and mathematical physics.
Book Description
This book expounds trade theory emphasizing that a trading equilibrium is general rather than partial, and is often best modelled using dual or envelope functions. This yields a compact treatment of standard theory, clarifies some errors and confusions, and produces some new departures. In particular, the book (i) gives unified treatments of comparative statics and welfare, (ii) sheds new light on the factor-price equalization issue, (iii) treats the modern specific-factor model in parallel with the usual Heckscher-Ohlin one, (iv) analyses the balance of payments in general equilibrium with flexible and fixed prices, (v) studies imperfect competition and intra-industry trade.
Customer Reviews:
A good book for international trade, but not perfect.......2004-02-02
The book gets into rather good discusion of basic models, equilibrium and more advanced topics. The math level of the book is at a graduate level and many of the results are done with enough details, discussion and algebra. However, the book suffers from lack of algebra and enough reasoning in the first chapters where it is describing basic models. The notation of the book is sometimes confusing too (I think this problem exists in all of the books about international trade). Besides, the book is rather old and may be missing some topics. A complementarity text for this book is recommended.

Book Description
One of the most remarkable and beautiful theorems in coding theory is Gleason's 1970 theorem about the weight enumerators of self-dual codes and their connections with invariant theory. In the past 35 years there have been hundreds of papers written about generalizations and applications of this theorem to different types of codes. This self-contained book develops a new theory which is powerful enough to include all the earlier generalizations.
It is also in part an encyclopedia that gives a very extensive list of the different types of self-dual codes and their properties, including tables of the best codes that are presently known. Besides self-dual codes, the book also discusses two closely-related subjects, lattices and modular forms, and quantum error-correcting codes.
This book, written by the leading experts in the subject, has no equivalent in the literature and will be of great interest to mathematicians, communication theorists, computer scientists and physicists.

Book Description
This monograph demonstrates how the performance of various well-known adaptive controllers can be improved significantly using the dual effect. The modifications to incorporate dual control are realized separately and independently of the main adaptive controller without complicating the algorithms. A new bicriterial approach for dual control is developed and applied to various types of popular linear and nonlinear adaptive controllers. Practical applications of the designed controllers to several real-time problems are presented. This monograph is the first book providing a complete exposition on the dual control problem from the inception in the early 1960s to the present state of the art aiming at students and researchers in adaptive control as well as design engineers in industry.

Book Description
Here, in what one of the contributors felicitously calls a mentoring book, sixteen professional women write as generational role models about the hard choices and real problems that surface throughout the life cycle. Because the economics of choice are not just monetary, but spiritual and psychological as well, professionals at all stages of life will welcome this support from the thinking women's trenches as they contemplate and actualize career and relationship decisions.
Customer Reviews:
A "paper mentor" for the professional woman.......2000-07-20
This book is an eloquently written anthology which addresses the unique challenges faced by professional women through different phases of their lives -- a must read for any modern, working woman who hopes to achieve some kind of balance between her career and personal lives. Nancy Kaltreider effectively articulates the dilemmas faced by such women and in doing so, validates this struggle. Readers will indeed find here a "paper mentor" to help guide and encourage them along their journey. This is by far the best work that I have read on the subject and a well worthwhile purchase.
Not nearly what I hoped it would be........1999-07-27
I am a 26 year old woman who is grinding her way through a PhD program in biology at a California university. When I heard of this book's publication, I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. I hoped that its writers would address many of the anxieties that I face: The two body career problem, when/if to have a family, how to balance career ambitions with sweetie quality time. Unfortunately, I was quite disappointed. The contributors have achieved a level of success in their careers that is not typical. Furthermore, the kinds of careers that these women have anything that I, or most women grad students, can realistically hope to achieve ourselves. Thus, I found most of their personal accounts pretty irrelevant (I simply can't relate to the issues and anxieties faced by a dean at a medical school) and somewhat irritating: By omitting the experiences of "regular career gals with PhD's" from this book, I feel that the editors implied that only the women who achieve stellar success have any right to worry about the kinds of issues that I mentioned above. I'd have preferred to hear from female grad students, postdocs, and career women with PhDs who have satifying, but not necessarily insanely high-power careers. I would have rather read the accounts of women who discovered, in their third of fourth year of grad schol, that they probably WEREN'T going to be members of the National Academy or deans of prestigious departments and how they switched gears. This book is no "paper mentor". The fact that this book cost $58 only added insult to injury.
First book I've ever returned........1999-01-27
I was hoping for more. This book is written by accomplished women with lots to say. Presumably, none of them had time to say it, because this work is only a first and superficial pass at a cnallenging problem. That still would have been enjoyable, but for the incredible $58.00 price. This book might be useful for a wealthy 23 year old contemplating a career. For those of us "in the trenches", the subtitle of one chapter, there is nothing here you don't already know. I believe these authors could form the nucleus of a worthwhile, in depth sequel, perhaps including surveys and casting a wide net among us for thoughtful solutions. (I am the male half of a two physician marriage, now in its 16th year.)
Comprehensive analysis of women's important life choices.......1999-01-10
This is a very thought/emotional provoking book on choices that women have in making life choices (career track, mommy track, single, choosing to be childless). This book is a collection of articles by different women professionals. I enjoyed the authors' psychological perspectives on common issues and themes underlying life choices for women in choosing to balance relationships and career. The book is enlightening because it talks about the experiences of women going through their decision making process. The reading experience is intense and rewarding.
