5 out of 5 stars reduce your EMI .......2006-03-06

If you are a circuit designer building a commercial product, then it is necessary to minimise the RF emissions. But many texts on circuitry gloss over the details of how to do this. Perhaps considered too uninteresting.

Montrose offers a detailed contrast. But readily accessible to anyone with an electrical engineering degree. Hence you can read tips on how to reduce the loop area on a PCB. Indeed, he suggests that you can use surface mount components, since they usually possess smaller loop area.

There are also recent innovations. Like grounding a heatsink for a microprocessor. The latest CPUs often dissipate enormous amounts of heat. But hitherto, little attention was often paid to actually grounding the requisite heatsink.

The book also devotes an entire chapter to the crucial idea of an image plane. It points out possible problems with an implementation, and how to solve these.

3 out of 5 stars Misleading.......2002-03-28

This book is well oganized and easy to use, but the information is often incorrect. We have found it to cause more problems than solve. Paul Clayton's book come much more highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars EMC Made Simple.......2000-08-23

Practical explanation of printed circuit board emissions, routing, trace termination ... covers all aspects of the printed circuit board. A must for the PCB engineer's reference shelf.

1 out of 5 stars Are You Kidding Me?.......2006-11-05

This is the worst textbook I have ever used is any class. The coverage of the topic is unclear and the practice questions are poorly worded. I can only hope that my school will find another text for teaching this subject.

1 out of 5 stars Awful, just plain awful........2006-10-16

I find this to be a very interesting course, but it is made quite difficult by a single small problem: It is very hard to get an understanding of a field which is built upon a solid foundation of mathematics when the book you're using skips over this most crucial aspect.

It is great that I have answers to the odd problems and the in section examples, but with no work to guide me I am left frustrated and exhausted. Combined with 4 other classes, this leads to a tough time trying to figure out even simple concepts.

Find a better book unless you already have a thorough understanding of this material, you will NOT regret it.

1 out of 5 stars Major, major problems.......2006-08-03

I originally started with the 6th edition...but there were no answers in the back, even for the odd-numbered problems. I asked the publisher and they said it was a policy. OK, that's dumb, but whatever.

Then I went to the 5th edition and got fairly far, but eventually got to a point where I couldn't solve one of the problems and the worthless examples weren't helping. (The examples are worthless because the question and answers are given, but the work isn't shown. Uh, hello--that's the point of examples.) The book has a certain surface readability but doesn't really explain the underlying issues very well. Chapter one is a good example of this: I knew cylindrical and spherical coordinates a lot better before this book confused me.

Then I got the 7th edition. I got as far as problem #17 in chapter one and found *4* errors (One simple typo in a problem, one answer somewhat off and two answers just out of the ballpark, flat out *wrong*).

The original author died 20 years ago--it is time for this book to be scrapped.

Time-Harmonic Electromagnetic Fields
A Classic Reissue in the IEEE Press Series on Electromagnetic Wave Theory
Donald G. Dudley, Series Editor
"When I begin a new research project, I clear my desk and put away all texts and reference books. Invariably, Harrington's book is the first book to find its way back to my desk. My copy is so worn that it is falling apart."--Dr. Kendall F. Casey, SRI
"In the opinion of our faculty, there is no other book available that serves as well as Professor Harrington's does as an introduction to advanced electromagnetic theory and to classic solution methods in electromagnetics."--Professor Chalmers M. Butler, Clemson University
First published in 1961, Roger Harrington's Time-Harmonic Electromagnetic Fields is one of the most significant works in electromagnetic theory and applications. Over the past forty years, it proved to be a key resource for students, professors, researchers, and engineers who require a comprehensive, in-depth treatment of the subject. Now, IEEE is reissuing the classic in response to requests from our many members, who found it an invaluable textbook and an enduring reference for practicing engineers.

4 out of 5 stars Desk Reference.......2007-01-26

This is a very usefull and accurate reference. This is a very technical book that will give you the answers to wave form propagations and dynamics of waveforms without focusing on specific antenna types. Like any engineering type book it can be dry as is the nature of most technical books. Highly recommended for the graduate level and above.

5 out of 5 stars Harrington keeps things simple, but no simpler ..........2005-02-04

This is a classic graduate textbook for Advanced Electromagnetics courses. One of the main things that I liked the most about this book is Dr. Harrington's strict adherence to one of Dr. Einstein's principles: "make things simple, but no simpler" - which works perfect for a graduate-level textbook. I am not implying that this book is difficult to follow than other commonly used graduate texts ("Advanced Engineering Electromagnetics" by Balanis comes to mind). In fact, this book is much easier to read and follow than books that tend to derive everything for you (which simply ends up cluttering your thought process with too much detail instead of focussing on the main concept in question). Read the chapter on "Cylindrical Waves" and compare it with its equivalent in Balanis's book, and you will understand my point. This book is quintessential for graduate students contemplating a career in Computational Electromagnetics.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you Roger !.......2005-01-28

When I was first introduced to Electro-Magnetics (EM), I thought of Harrington's book as one of these oldies which senior professors have sitting on a dusty shelf. To the novice who I was it lacked the modern flair of the recent publications. Time went on, I took classes which tought me mathematical & numerical recipes, yet left me with little understanding of EM phenomenons. Soon enough and by my own fault I forgot the basic principles while concentrating on the math, and I lost interest. As a microwave design engineer later on I kept bumping into problems which had not yet been discussed in the litterature or for which I needed a simpler solution than the numerical approaches that are in fashion. I looked for the book which would offer the right mix of theoritical treatment and engineering relevance for the likes of me. I noticed that Harrington's was the most quoted one in the litterature just about, and thought that there must be a good reason for this. So I ordered a copy. I went through it with a pen in hand and solved the exercises at the end of each chapter. It was frustrating at first, because I had long lost the habit of manipulating the basic math of EM. I kept at it however, as the more I read the more I realised how much I ignored. I even got the taste for EM over time. Harrington's thus became a reference to which I turn almost every time I face a new EM problem. From a didactic point of view it is about the best textbook I have ever come across. Also it has more relevance to modern EM engineering than it seems at first sight: one will even find a mention of the coplanar waveguide (p.135)! I warmly recommend it to both the engineer and the student. But remember: read it with a pen in hand, and do the exercises at the end of each chapter! A couple of shortcomings I ought to mention though: the stationary formula for the input impedance of a wire dipole radiator (7.9) is not well explained (see Jordan & Balmain's, 14.09), nor are stationary formulae for the impedance matrix of general networks (3.8). Still: a very good buy. Harrington's "Field Computation by Moment Methods" is an other good one by the way.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT.......1999-06-19

I was introduced to this classic while I was a master's (M.Tech) student at IIT Kharagpur, India in 1981.

Prof. Harrington's very pithy approach provoked me to think deeply on the subject. It is because of this book that my interest in the subject has been alive and vibrant today.

I met Prof. Harrington for the 1st time at the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Conference at Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1993. Prof. Harrington comforted me by saying that he has no plans to do any alterantions to this classic text in the near future.

This book is not for the indolent and hence is not for causal reading like many lengthy and `verbose' textbooks on this subject. However, if I have ever an opportunity for organizing a 1st-year graduate course on EM theory, I shall use Harrington. Why wouldn't you ?

We purchased this series because we checked them out from the library and decided we should own them. The _Feynman Lectures on Physics_ are great resources for you as a parent desiring to impart these concepts. Feynman explains complex ideas through very simple and entertaining stories. ***** These CDs are a "must have" for roadtrips!

As other reviewers have stated this series has a few problems. The first is that the audio was copied from audio tapes as one long CD track without partitions which is a huge pain. The lectures are also all jumbled up into "topic areas", and the listener is left to align them to the chapters in the Feynman Lectures on Physics. The sections to which the commentator on the CD's refers are in these books (ISBN: 0201021153, or even better get the hardcover). If you are learning physics for the first time, you definitely want the books to go along with at the same time.

There is no way you can follow these lectures UNLESS you have the books (R.P Feynman lectures on Physics Vols 1-3) in front of you or maybe you can follow them if you are smarter than RPF himself, which is unlikely (otherwise i'd be reading your book). Anyway, the reason for this is there is a lot of formulae and explaining happening on the black board and RPF talks pretty fast with his sharp brooklyn accent. So, have the book and chapter he is talking about in front of you and pay attention to what he is saying and frequently pause to digest what he has said and you'll appreciate the lectures more. It may not be possible to understand everything he says in his books, let alone in the audio, which makes it difficukt understanding when you are not in possession of his books. But the CD's are a blast to listen to, EXCEPT the people who produced the CD's should be impaled on some sharp object because each CD has ONE track from start to finish. So to go back or skip sections is a real pain.

If you are looking for a laymans' basic physics primer, look somewhere else! If you have a background in the material and are looking for a review or for alternative views of the subject then this is appropriate.

I first read the "Feynman Lectures" (in book form) during the first year of my physics studies. They struck me then, and still do, as offering inspired and inspiring insight from a first class brain.

To hear him speak, after reading so much of his material through the years is a real kick. At first I couldn't imagine how one could hear the lectures without the written material in support. Although I think that this material is in fact best absorbed in conjunction with the written Lectures, yet these tapes are a pleasurable and thoughtful listen all by themself.

If you order one of the series, go for the more general of the sets. I got one which was extremely good in it's description of the structure of crystals, 'Volume 3 From Crystal Structure of Magnetism', but went into later elaborate detail on formulae, much done on a chalkboard in the longlost 1960's, which left me in the dust...

5 out of 5 stars A great book for those with an existing background in EM.......2003-10-24

I used this book during my MSEE research and found it to be invaluable. While I also had the benefit of the principal author being my Advisor, this book easily stands by itself. This book describes several different methods and concepts in the computational analysis of EM problems, including issues related to computer optimization. It's somewhat dense in that the authors assume you already have a thorough knowledge of EM, so I wouldn't recommend it for beginners. If you work in the field, however, this book is a must-have.

This is a specialist book - indispensable for those involved in computational electromagnetics. It gives a lucid and indepth treatment of a wide variety of computational EM problems and associated theory. It is packed full of appropriately placed references which are at the coalface of research in this area. A great book! Well done!

Book Description

Atom-Photon Interactions: Basic Processes and Applications allows the reader to master various aspects of the physics of the interaction between light and matter. It is devoted to the study of the interactions between photons and atoms in atomic and molecular physics, quantum optics, and laser physics. The elementary processes in which photons are emitted, absorbed, scattered, or exchanged between atoms are treated in detail and described using diagrammatic representation. The book presents different theoretical approaches, including:
* Perturbative methods
* The resolvent method
* Use of the master equation
* The Langevin equation
* The optical Bloch equations
* The dressed-atom approach

Each method is presented in a self-contained manner so that it may be studied independently. Many applications of these approaches to simple and important physical phenomena are given to illustrate the potential and limitations of each method.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful.......2000-06-26

Atom Photon Interactions is an excellent text for atomic and optical physics. I refer back to the review material---transition amplitudes, quantum electrodynamic fundamentals, etc--- over and over again. Naturally, these sections are very brief, and the book works best along side Cohen-Tannoudji's more elementary texts Quantum Mechanics and Photons and Atoms, or their equivalents.

The later chapters are rich in techniques and intuition applicable to atom-trapping, spectroscopy, laser theory, etc. Cohen-Tannoudji covers a lot of material, and manages to link it all to a few basic fundamental principles. The book is extremely well-organized, with bite-sized sections and appendices to each chapter. An excellent collection of exercises with solutions is included in the back. Unfortunately, the text does not prompt the reader to try working these problems at appropriate times (sadly, I didn't realize the exercises were there until I'd been using the book for some time). Like Photons and Atoms, this is primarily a book for theorists; its one weakness, I feel, is that the principles, however clear, never seem connected to the actual numbers that an experimentalist or system designer can relate to.

4 out of 5 stars A good source of problems, but a somewhat muddled narrative.......2006-12-20

This is an excellent source of problems if you are an undergraduate electrical engineering student enrolled in a class concerned with electromagnetics, which is probably one of the toughest courses you'll face as an undergraduate. Although the selection of problems is excellent, there is something to be desired with the explanation sections of most chapters. The author makes numerous references in equations to vectors that he fails to identify either verbally, or with a diagram. Also, I thought there were insufficient diagrams to adequately convey the concepts being presented.

I also thought it was odd that the first chapter was dedicated to such an elementary concept as vector analysis when there are much more complex mathematical concepts such as multivariable calculus and partial differential equations being used throughout the book that are not given an explanation. If you are studying electromagnetics, the best textbook out there is "Engineering Electromagnetics" by Nathan Ida. Ida explains absolutely everything about electromagnetics, and the problems in this Schaum's outline complement both the material and the problems in that book very well. The last few chapters in this Schaum's are on antennas and waveguides. It is a nice overview, but it is a somewhat shallow treatment.

A good supplement for that material is a 1968 Schaum's outline that is now out of print - "Schaum's Outline on the Theory and Problems of Transmission Lines" (ISBN 0070107475). It contains complete treatments of impedance and admittance matching topics, Smith chart fundamentals, plus many good worked examples and practice problems. The only drawback of this older outline is that the techniques used don't incorporate more of the modern numerical methods that are now more prevalent.

2 out of 5 stars Too Brief!.......2005-09-23

It appears that the author assumes readers will already have a good understanding of calculus, vectors, and a somewhat advanced knowledge of electrostatics and electromagnetism! Readers without this background will likely struggle with the material!

I have a reasonable background (to tertiary level) in mathematics and electrical engineering, but I still found this book difficult to follow in many parts!

The reviews of theory at the beginning of chapters, are a bit too brief and therefore difficult to understand!

Many solved calculations leave out intermediate steps, which makes it difficult to follow. The calculations should include all steps in their derivation and solutions, so that there would be no misunderstanding on how the solutions are determined.

Therefore, this edition is NOT recommended for most people. This book is apparently only suitable for people who have a thorough knowledge of electrostatics, electromagnetics, calculus, and vectors.

To make this book more practical and attractive to others, the material needs to be rewritten and expanded!

4 out of 5 stars Useful and practical Electronic Book.......2005-08-30

Electromagnetism is a hard subject for many people, including myself. Schaums Outline of Electromagnetics, by Edminister, is an outstanding collection of problems and solutions more even when a companion in Electromagnetics using Mathcad, the leading technical calculation software. The big advantage of the interactive Outline is its use of LiveMath. You can change the starting parameters of a problem and watch as graphs are calculated in front your eyes.

The student will find this is an exciting tool for exploring the universal laws governing electromagnetic waves and for gaining intuition about how various parameters affect the solution to problems.

Finally, I am sure that the educator in physics and engineering will find a comprehensive selection of laboratory and homework exercises in Mathcad, with plenty of room for creativity and expansion.

5 out of 5 stars Great source for worked probs.......2004-04-14

This book does what my class book (Hayt) doesn't--give a plethera of worked problems. I sit in class and watch my prof prove theorems, read Hyat's book that discusses the "why", and had difficulties pulling it all together. I NEEDED EXAMPLE PROBS! Schaum's proved extremely beneficial to me and I will probably not take any more EE courses without it as a supplement. If you need to look at detailed example problems to study and do your homework, this book is a no brainer if you want to pass this difficult topic.

Book Description

Quantum Kinetics in Transport and Optics of Semiconductors deals with the quantum kinetics for transport in low-dimensional microstructures and for ultrashort laser-pulse spectroscopy. The nonequilibrium Green function theory is described and used for the derivation of the quantum kinetic equations. Numerical methods for the solution of the retarded quantum kinetic equations are discussed and results are presented for quantum high-field transport and for mesoscopic transport phenomena. Quantum beats, polarization decay and non-Markovian behaviour are treated for femtosecond spectroscopy on a microscopic basis.

I recommend this book to anyone who wants an introduction to nonequilibrium Green function techniques. It is much more readible and up-to-date than Kadanoff and Baym's "Quantum Statistical Mechanics".

Book Description

This book is an electromagnetics classic. Originally published in 1941, it has been used by many generations of students, teachers, and researchers ever since. Since it is classic electromagnetics, every chapter continues to be referenced to this day.

This classic reissue contains the entire, original edition first published in 1941. Additionally, two new forewords by Dr. Paul E. Gray (former MIT President and colleague of Dr. Stratton) and another by Dr. Donald G. Dudley, Editor of the IEEE Press Series on E/M Waves on the significance of the book's contribution to the field of Electromagnetics.

5 out of 5 stars The most complete..........2007-04-30

The most complete and detailed book about Electromagnetic theory I have read so far!

4 out of 5 stars A worthy, unique, but dated book.......2007-02-10

This book is not suitable as an introductory text because it assumes its readers have a mature understanding of Maxwell's equations and high mathematical sophistication. I have no further opinion of it as a teaching tool, having only used it as a reference for professional work in the electromagnetic sciences. In this role it never fails to provide a systematic and rigorous discussion of the topics it covers. The book is particularly comprehensive in areas of potential theory and contains the solutions to many problems that I have not been able to find elsewhere. Often these solutions are assumed as background for current research publications in EM so having access to detailed solutions can be very helpful. However, the book has three significant drawbacks as a reference: (1) The sections are not written to be standalone so one often has to do much work looking up early equations and notations (2) The mathematical techniques are, expectedly, dated. For example it relies more heavily on Green's Therom than current approaches (which largely avoid explicit use of Green's Therom by employing Green's Functions) and seeks explicit solutions where numerical techniques could be more easily employed (3) The material on wave propagation and scattering is limited. All that said, for the right person in the right field, this book is a real gem.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best...Old classic...Truly ageless.......2005-08-14

To the curious minds of today and tomorrow:

As you can gather from the other reviews on this book, Stratton's magnum opus is time-honored, and kept in highest regard. If you checked the reference list of all modern day books on electromagnetic theory, you would immediately discover that there is always Stratton's on the list. And that should be your hint.

The prose used in the book is simply lucid. No corner is cut in the discussion. Almost everthing presented therein is worked out from scratch, and the discussion of the analyses is as rigorous as they possibly can be.

I believe this book would be most useful to those who are interested in gaining a truly deep understanding of electromagnetic phenomena. But here's a word of caution...this book needs to be read very slowly and carefully. Every sentence in the book is a gem, on which the reader needs to reflect :-)

I highly recommend this book. And I wish someone would publish
it again, so that the current and next generations of curious minds will not be denied widespread access to such a masterpiece!

Cheers,

Dr. E.

5 out of 5 stars Simply.. The Master of The EM Theory Refferences.......2004-07-02

What it really distinguishes this book is it explains the crucial issues to understand the real physical concepts behind the electromagnetic theory. for instance, the explanation why one over the square root of the multiplication of epsilon and mu gives the velocity of wave, check any book it will say the typical statement "mathematical consequences". The coverage is superb when it comes to the field source and in the subsequent chapters relating it to the boundary conditions. For engineers, this book is not a textbook, it is a book you read to establish a substantially strong background to analyze any electromagnetic problem. For a physicist, it is essential textbook to understand EM theory. Unfortunately, it is out of print, I hope every one knows this fabulous book or want to have it to send an email to prof. Donald G. Dudley, the editor of the IEEE series on Electromagnetic Wave Theory, to reprint it again. This his email: dudley@ece.arizona.edu

5 out of 5 stars Classic EM testbook.......2004-06-17

This is a classic. I think the best ever written on electromagnetic
theory. I own 3 copies, all in well-used condition, so I was looking for a better conditioned copy. It is unfortunate that
after all these years (pub. date 1941), it is now out of print.

5 out of 5 stars Nondestructive Evaluation 101 and why I like it so much!.......2002-06-27

It takes a village to raze a barn, and Mr. Shull proves it! I've be destroying things for the majority of my life and Mr. Shulls' techniques have been invaluable. I almost broke my keyboard while typing this review. Luckily his book is holding up half my computer table. The lush illustrations remind me of a warm, wet forest caught between two antlers. I couldn't remember. This story provides the impetus for supplying every 4-year old with razor/hammer/screwdrivers for building a special place beyond the magic world of the abandoned refrigerator. Aboriginally speaking, Nondestructive Evaluation: Theory, Techniques, and Applications is worth every penny of... (what) it costs.
