Book Description
This textbook provides a thorough introduction to the field of learning from experimental data and soft computing. Support vector machines (SVM) and neural networks (NN) are the mathematical structures, or models, that underlie learning, while fuzzy logic systems (FLS) enable us to embed structured human knowledge into workable algorithms. The book assumes that it is not only useful, but necessary, to treat SVM, NN, and FLS as parts of a connected whole. Throughout, the theory and algorithms are illustrated by practical examples, as well as by problem sets and simulated experiments. This approach enables the reader to develop SVM, NN, and FLS in addition to understanding them. The book also presents three case studies: on NN-based control, financial time series analysis, and computer graphics. A solutions manual and all of the MATLAB programs needed for the simulated experiments are available.
Customer Reviews:
An extremely good book.......2006-11-16
This is a very good book. Another reviewer has commented on Vojislav Kecman being an excellent teacher. I whole-heartedly second that opinion. Often times, while reading this book, you will pause with a doubt or question. What you will find surprising is that almost certainly the author has answered that question in the next paragraph. Many times, the author's answers will tally your own answers.
The first chapter of the book (entitled: Learning and Soft Computing: Rationale, Motivations, Needs, Basics) is 119 pages long. It is an essential reading. By the time you finish reading this chapter the things will start falling into place and you will be more motivated and ready to read the remaining chapters. Until you are highly aware of this topic, do not skip this chapter.
A book is made up of a lot of things other than the text that it covers. Does it contain many/any stupid jokes? Is it printed on the highest quality paper? Is the font size good? Is it printed too dense? Is the cover page inviting enough? Are the dimensions/weight of the book correct? On all these counts the book scores high.
Consistent with the subject matter that it covers, this is not an easy book. You will perhaps like to read it with paper and pencil. But if you are willing to spend time with this book, this book will do a lot of good to you. This is a very good book.
An excellent book on Machine Learning.......2003-02-27
What strikes me each time I open this book is Mr Kecman's sense of pedagogy: it is a lesson in the matter. Not only his book delivers the - sometimes complex - techniques in a highly readable manner, but the concepts behind each of the main tools (SVM, NN & FL) he chose to highlight are always brilliantly put in context. One comes out of the reading with more than a set of equations but rather with a clearer picture of the field.
Mr Kecman is - without a doubt - a great teacher.
This effort to deliver a clear message is furthermore underlined through the numerous original figures: if you are like me and feel that a (good) picture speaks more than a thousand words, you will sure appreciate the way the illustrations complement the text and truly help the understanding.
I have read several other books on the subject but if I had to chose one for teaching purposes, this would be the one. I you want to build a better understanding of the field, get this book: it will pay on the long term.
Excellent, useful book!.......2001-07-23
This book is a nice and, I would say, a successful attempt to provide a unified survey of important theoretical and practical machine learning tools: neural networks (NN), support vector machines (SVM) and fuzzy systems (FS).
Book consists of nine chapters, covering SVMs, one- and multi-layer perceptrons and radial-basis function networks, as variants of neural networks, and basics of fuzzy theory. This is followed by interesting case-studies (in financial, control and computer graphic applications) and concluded by basics of optimization theory and an overview of necessary mathematical tools. All the MATLAB programs needed for the simulated experiments are available on the book web site.
Authored by Vojislav Kecman, a prominent researcher in the field of soft computing and previous MIT visiting professor, this book is an excellent material for advanced undergraduate and introductory graduate courses in machine learning applications and soft computing....

A First Course in Fuzzy Logic.......1999-12-22
If you are looking for a book on Fuzzy Logic Theory, this is a good book. It explains the mathematical basis of fuzzy logic, the mathmatical symbols used, provides proofs for theorems, etc. The chapters and sections are clearly labeled in the table of contents, making it easy to zero in on a topic. It is a College Text Book, with problems to solve at the end of each chapter. Selected problems have answers in the back of the book. Unfortunately, that wasn't the type of book that I expected or needed. I was looking more for the hands on, how to, type of book. That is the only reason it did not get 5 stars.
Outstanding, for people who are interested in this area.......1999-09-21
This is the clearest explanation and application of fuzzy logic that has been published. It is thorough, without being arcane or pedantic.

Waste if money.......2005-08-02
What good is this book withut tradestation code. Eventually you will not use it and will set on your book shelf collecting dust. I suspect the author knows how to program and all other author like him. Topics studied in MS computer science software courses leave it to programers to write, since they are qualified than those who don't know how, But can do research ans sell a book to excited hope to be traders.
Hi-tech is always the best???????????.......2001-08-07
My interest in NN/GA started 3 years ago and I found this book. It covers some advanced methods for trading. But I am not sure whether they are really better than the traditional technical analysis. The results in this book could not prove it. And some authors didn't disclose their methods clearly. It seems to be very common among people who are using NN/GA/fuzzy logic in trading. So it is hard to know the reliability and accuracy of their results. And we cannot repeat their experiments. Personally, I won't use them in trading. I also gradually lose the interest in this area. I would like to know anyone really made profit by using them.
Covers a lot........1999-06-27
Discusses financial applications of neural networks, genetic algorithms and fuzzy logic. Is aimed at the beginner to intermediate level. Focuses more on data processing and application than on the actual building of neural nets. Several useful examples are given. Sections are written by experts in that particular field. This is usually advantageous except ocassionally where terminology may not always be consistent between sections. Overall a good book if you know how to write your own NN/GA/FUZZY program or have access to one.

a reasonable overview but don't expect too much detail.......2004-10-12
As the other reviewer said, if you know nothing about neural networks, then this is a good place to start. It begins with an overview of neural networks in the brain, using the visual processing system as a detailed example. Once this is done, it moves on to general concepts and basic theory encountered in the field. The drawback is topics tend to be skimmed over with the minimum of detail and very few examples, some of which are barely explained - often there are figures of networks with no real discussion of what is going on. Having said that, reading this book gave me enough understanding of the underlying ideas so that i was able to pick up a more mathematical treatment of the subject and follow what was going on and i definitely think it was worth the purchase.
best for beginners.......2001-06-08
If you have no idea what this subject is all about or if you are interested in knowing the concept of neural networks then try this book, it gives you the conceptual view in a simple matter which is perfectly enough to gain your interest in the subject. If any one wanna work in this field I strongly suggest them to read this book before they want to continue in the field.
"A simple and well organised matter" is the best fit for this book.

Customer Reviews:
starter.......2000-10-15
It seems that most texts on fuzzy and nnets are in very basic form. Given the (fact) substantial use of both types of controllers at the most advanced levels of technology and finance it seems somewhat strange (trade secrets). If you already have Matlab's Fuzzy or NNets the material is somewhat redundant, given that the M-files are easier to work with in Matlab than using the Microsoft Word connection (more later). The manual allows the basic concepts to be easily transported to MathCad and for this reader is worth the book. It is for the begginer without Matlab that this text really shines. It has the Microsoft Words ability to work with the Matlab (although it is not installed) interface to show the reader how the two, fuzzy and nnets, work together. At the very least it allows someone to determine if they wish to proceed with topic (this is the future of control systems). I found that building a sub program in MathCad using set theory operators, to call the sub-routines of fuzzy and nnets worked best. This was a just for fun. Both Matlabs Fuzzy and nnet toolboxes work far better. This text adds fill in material for both Matlabs fuzzy and nnet toolbox texts.

Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive text.......1999-03-25
I have read many books on fuzzy control, I found this is the most logical and comprehensive. The most important feature of the book is the formulation of diverse varieties of fuzzy control methods. It presents the fuzzy control in a progressive and logical way. However, its mathematical notations and proof of theorems block up many readers'learning. It is easy to be lost in struggling with the mathematics, without knowing the rationale behind theorems. Intutitive explanations for formulas and notations are required. It would be perfect if it includes programming examples to show how to implement fuzzy controllers with popular computer languages, also, drill problems with solutions at the end of each chapter will benefit to readers.
