4 out of 5 stars A discussion of the ending *Spoilers below*.......2007-10-02

*WARNING: Don't read this review if you haven't read the book and don't want to know the ending

The book has three surprise events in the ending. The first is Lennie's killing of Curley's wife. This is shocking because Curley's father owns the farm, so Lennie could get into serious trouble. The second is when Lennie is hiding in the brush waiting for George, and he sees and hears Aunt Clara's ghost talking and later a rabbit talking. The third is not when George shoots Lennie, but when George walks away with Slim, as if the two are best pals now. This makes it seem that George did not take his friendship with Lennie very seriously, because instead of mourning his death alone, he hangs on to Slim, as if Lennie is easily replaceable and that Slim has taken Lennie's place now. I thought the ending makes George seem like a shady character, not bad enough to be called the villain, but still not good enough to be called hero of the book.

3 out of 5 stars Speak up for those who can't speak for themselves, because someone is advocating for their death.......2007-09-24

You won't get any complaint from me that this book is skillfully written, in it's vivid descriptions of settings, detailed descriptions of characters, and realistic dialogue.

However, I believe this book has a bad message, and the bad message is about how it's ok to put the weak, infirm and dependent to death. It started with the discussion of Candy's aged dog. The book gave the impression that the dog's age made him no good to even himself, the "quality of life" argument that has been advanced to support euthanizing the elderly, weak and infirm.

After discussing Candy's dog, the argument proceded to Candy himself, where he longs to be euthanized when he can no longer work.

Finally, we come to George's murder of the retarded Lennie, which is completely justified by Slim, the voice of the one sympathetic character in the book. I believe that George was looking for an opportunity to divest himself of Lennie, and that opportunity presented itself when Lennie killed Curley's wife. It was also mentioned that if Lennie was institutionalized, it would be worse than death. I realized there are conflicting opinions about the moral nature of George, but I don't believe he was a good character.

As I was writing this review, I recalled Proverbs 31:8-9 "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy." Of Mice And Men describes a world where the advocates for euthanizing the weak and infirm prevail.

4 out of 5 stars Tragedies.......2007-09-16

This is a well-constructed, tightly-crafted novella by Steinbeck telling the story of George and his simple-minded companion Lennie, who arrive at a farm looking for work so they can save enough money to achieve their dream of buying their own property. You know something is bound to go wrong.

Although much of the plot might be well-signalled before it occurs, I thought that it did not detract from the quality of the work. As a short piece of fiction should, it holds the reader's attention throughout. It also seemed to me that by this time, Steinbeck seemed to be producing high-quality work. "The Grapes of Wrath" were just around the corner.

5 out of 5 stars Steinbeck does wonders with so few pages. This is a great touching story.......2007-09-10

Steinbeck writes beautiful prose in this very short book. The story unravels rather quickly and the strong connection one feels with the characters is created from the very first pages. The story is about two friends that travel together looking for work on farms in California. Lennie is a very large man with a feeble mind and George is Lennie's keeper who dreams with Lennie about eventually having a small piece of land where they can have animals and live from it. The book is written using the slang of the 20's and Steinbeck uses incredible imagery throughout the book. The quick story is bound to touch your heart and linger in your mind days after the last page has been read. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Big.......2007-09-01

What makes a big book? Not physical length. Knowing this novel's reputation as one of Steinbeck's masterpieces, I was astounded to lay hands on its mere hundred pages. Not scale of setting, either. The entire novella takes place in and around the bunkhouse of a California farm, and contains fewer than a dozen characters; it is so compact that it might almost have been made for film, television, or the stage (and it did in fact succeed in all these media). The people, furthermore, are by no means important or powerful; Steinbeck tells of ordinary itinerant laborers, bindle stiffs, living precariously from job to job. In this, the book is similar to THE GRAPES OF WRATH, but deliberately avoids its epic scope, preferring to show a few characters in intimate detail rather than to suggest the displacement of multitudes.

Yet I have no hesitation in calling the book big. Without any effort or overt symbolism, Steinbeck shows something simultaneously particular and vast. His characters are individuals, very real yet bound to one another and to us through their common humanity. The novel speaks to a particular time -- the American West in the late thirties -- and yet seems timeless. It takes a specific corner of California ("A few miles south of Soledad, the Salinas River drops in close to the hillside bank and runs deep and green") and makes it a kind of oasis of simplicity, as in the marvelous opening scene where the principal characters choose to spend a night sleeping under the stars rather than arriving too soon at the farm.

And nothing could be bigger than the heart of Lennie, the simple-minded giant who comes to the farm with his friend and protector George, but whose confused feelings and ignorance of his own strength get him into trouble. The bond between him and George is not fully explained, but it is palpably filled with a kind of love. Lennie's inability to articulate his feelings is shared by all the other characters to some extent; this is a world in which men keep themselves to themselves and move on alone. But their very inarticulateness gives their underlying emotions an almost primal power. Truly, this is a big book.

Book Description

Of Mice and Men was John Steinbeck's first masterpiece. Originally published in 1937, it's the timeless story of George Milton and Lennie Small, ranch hands who drift from job to job, always one step ahead of the law and a few dollars from the poorhouse. George is small, wiry, sharp-tongued and quick-tempered; slow witted Lennie is his opposite—an immense man, brutishly strong but naturally docile, a giant with the mind of a child. Despite their difference, George and Lennie are bound together by a shared vision: their own small farm, where they'll raise cows, pigs, chickens, and rabbits, where they'll be their own bosses and live off the fat of the land. When they find work on a ranch in California's Salinas Valley, the dream at last seems within reach. If they can just save up a little money. . . . But their hopes, like "the best-laid schemes of mice and men," begin to go awry. The story unfolds with the power and inevitability of a Greek tragedy, as Lennie commits an accidental murder, and George, in a riveting, deeply moving finale, must do what he can to make things turn our right.

5 out of 5 stars magic is created.......2007-05-13

It's undisputed that Steinbeck's novel is a gem of its own rights. Add to that Gary Sinise, a great actor who very obviously has a soft spot for this particular book (Gary Sinise has done Of Mice And Men on stage as well as for the movies) and it's magic that is created.

One man's voice turns from narrating to snarky to hatefilled to sad with a burden too heavy to carry in the span of moments. It's a brilliant interpretation Gary Sinise is delivering. I couldn't stop listening and was carried to a place where sycamore leaves were rustling under my feet. Amazing!

For those who have never read Of Mice and Men AND for those who have - this is an exquisitely read version of Steinbeck's classic tale.

5 out of 5 stars Of Mice and Men, Gary Sinise is awesome!.......2006-10-25

I teach special ed and in the past have used the old cassette version our school's media center supplied. Compared to Gary Sinise on CD, it was awful! My students were riveted by Sinise's delivery. He more than did justice to Steinbeck's classic tale.

5 out of 5 stars Gary Sinise And John Steinbeck. Absolutely Masterful !Thanks John!.......2006-06-30

My good mate John at Matilda's book store in Mount Waverley loaned me this audio book and I was totally mesmerized by it. I always knew that Gary Sinise was a great actor but I had no idea of just how good a book narrator he is. He recites all of the character voices himself and you would swear that there must be different people speaking, such is his mastery of the English Language, dialect and enunciation. I listened to this book through my stereo headphones and it was like Mr. Sinise was in the room with me reading this book aloud. A true masterpiece and thanks a lot John for this audio book.I think you have great taste in Literature.

It really is helpful and challenging, unlike those others that call themselves "challenging" units. I would definitely recommend this guide for teachers, and would buy again.

Book Description

The Steinbeck Centennial Collection: The Grapes of Wrath, Of Mice and Men, East of Eden, The Pearl, Cannery Row, Travels With Charley In Search of America (Boxed Set) Description: No writer is more quintessentially American than John Steinbeck. Born in 1902 in Salinas, California, Steinbeck attended Stanford University before working at a series of mostly blue-collar jobs and embarking on his literary career. Profoundly committed to social progress, he used his writing to raise issues of labor exploitation and the plight of the common man, penning some of the greatest American novels of the twentieth century and winning such prestigious awards as the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. He received the Nobel Prize in 1962, "for his realistic and imaginative writings, combining as they do sympathetic humour and keen social perception." Today, more than thirty years after his death, he remains one of America's greatest writers and cultural figures.

The boxed set, containing deluxe trade paperback editions with french flaps, is being released in honor of the Steinbeck centennial being celebrated throughout 2002. Penguin Putnam Inc, in partnership with the Steinbeck Foundation and the Great Books Foundation is sponsoring numerous events throught the year.

I purchased it to replace volumes
"borrowed" over the years and read all again, some for the first time in decades. They haven't changed and they never disappoint.
This would be a perfect gift for a young reader just beginning to build their adult collection.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome collection.......2005-10-25

I just moved to Salinas, CA when I ordered this set. I had never read John Steinbeck before, and thought this was a good time to start. Wow was I in for a treat! Phenomenal poetic language, incredible story lines, wonderful location descriptions. How exciting it is to read such stories taking place in the very settings I'm exploring now! I recommend this to others who haven't ever been here either, you may just find yourself with another destination on your "places to go list."

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful collection.......2004-02-17

I just finished < > in my reading class,we even had discussed the similarities between Lennie and Forest Gump, and the differences between Steibeck's concise style and Hemingway's typical terseness.Afterward,I ordered < >,checked < >from my high school liabary. And now,you got a chance to read all of his masterpieces in the same time.I respectfully recommanded you to looked at Steinbeck's novels based upon Salina Valley,CA,his hometown,a heavenly countryside throughout the spiritial world of the master writter.I think Steinbeck's distinguishment is that he reflected two worlds in a character, both historically and mentally.Of course,he had written an epic with roustic American speciality.

3 out of 5 stars The Pearl.......2003-01-04

There was a poor family in La Paz, in a small village. Kino and Juana had a son name Coyotito.
One day, Coyotito was pinched by a scorpion, but his parents did not have enough money to pay for the medication. They unexpectily found a big pearl from the sea, so they decided to sell it and use the money to save Coyotito. Unfortunately, no one was willing to pay a decent price for the pearl. Since the price offer in the village was not enough to pay for the medication, the couple then decide to go to the capital and hoped to find a better buyer who was willing to offer a better price. Although the parent knew better that there would be many obstacles and problem throughout the journey, their love for their son gave them bravery motivation to move on.
The story is very interesting, but the topic is not my favorite. The story is described in detail and it gives me many images as I read on. Therefore, I would give this ***.

5 out of 5 stars Some pretty amazing Steinbeck magic.......2001-12-15

This volume contains some of the earlier works of John Steinbeck. Steinbeck was a master of the English language and had the talent of using the least amount of words to convey the greatest amount of emotions. His stories are moving without being cheap. He is compassionate and had keen insight into his characters and the world at large.
Reviewing each story that appears in this volume is beyond the scope of this review, and you should check out that various titles individually. I will just say a few words about the collection in general. Steinbeck's earlier works are, in my opinion, better than his later, more ambitious works. While his later works can be viewed as some sort of social criticism, these earlier works are simply his personal salute to human nature. Steinbeck knew a basic truth about writing - if you want to write a great book, before you have a great theme, make sure you have great characters, and the rest will follow.
Steinbeck is both profound and very accessible at the same time, which I think is the trademark of a great author. He wrote for ordinary people (unlike, say, Joyce), and at the same time his works are complex enough to be appreciated by scholars. Whatever group you belong to, you will not regret reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars steinbeck at his best in Mice and Men.......2000-10-01

This wonderful novella tells the ineffably sad tale of two itinerant farm laborers in Depression California. George Milton is a small wiry man, his traveling companion, Lennie Small, is a giant, but a simpleton. The two travel from farm to farm, one step ahead of trouble as Lennie's incredible strength and feeble brain continually land them in trouble. Other farm hands are struck by the rarity of finding such men traveling as partners, but Lennie and George have a dream, a dream of a better life. As soon as they can raise $600 they can buy a farm and be their own bosses and Lennie will get to raise the rabbits that he loves, but has a tendency to accidentally crush. Unfortunately, trouble awaits at the farm where they are headed. The ranch owner's son, Curley, can't control his new bride who has "the eye" or his own temper which flares up whenever she starts flirting with the hired hands.

This is one of those books you had to read in 9th grade, largely because it was by a famous author and it's short enough that teachers figure students might actually finish it. If you haven't read it since, give it another try. The relationship between George and Lennie is one of the most beautiful, and oft imitated, in all of literature and the themes of love, friendship, loyalty, courage and the dream of a better life are both timeless and compelling.

GRADE: A+

4 out of 5 stars Of mice and men.......2000-08-09

I read Of Mice And Men because of a school requirement. The themes of Friendship, Loneliness and dreams feature strongly in this book. I felt that I could relate mostly to the theme of friendship, I like, Lennie and George rely on my friends to help and guide me along the way. In this sense I felt a connection with the plot. At the beginning of the book I was not very interested, and first I didn't like it at all, but towards the middle and end I started to be more interested, and I found that I had to finish it as soon as possible. Now, I feel that I have a stronger knowledge of friendship and trust and the limits I would go to for any one of my friends. Besides the book was good, I wouldn't recommend it, to people who don't like to read.

5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece of efficiency and meaning.......2005-12-25

If an index could be created that would measure a book's significance and divide it by the number of words, few books would come anywhere near "Of Mice and Men". This is a book that every aspiring writer (and many active ones) should read and then keep in mind as a guide to packing meaning into every word, every image, every scene, and every character. Absolutely nothing is wasted here. The closest I have seen to this efficiency of meaning is in Octavia Butler's "Wild Seed."

When was the story set? It doesn't matter. This is a timeless tale of people facing adversity and trying to hold on to their humanity. The two central characters care for one another in a way that is seldom depicted this well in writing or on film. "Of Mice and Men" is a story of love and tragedy that ranks right with the Greek classics. After reading this book, you will feel that you walked side-by-side with these characters and saw what they saw, smelled what they smelled, and felt what they felt.

The Teacher's Pet Publications LitPlans are a terrific resource, especially for starting teachers. They are, in themselves, a complete unit plan utilizing day by day lessons, vocabulary, tests and quizzes, puzzles, and enrichment activities.

They are, by no means, a way for you to teach the book without having done your own research and planning. However, if you suddenly find, as I have in the past, that you are to teach a book you've not yet read, there are enough opening activities for you to get the students started while you read ahead of them.

I highly recommend Mary B. Collins' series of units as a starting point, but you and the students will be much happier if you adapt them to your own needs rather than teach them 'by the book.' I have purchased a number of these: _Of Mice and Men_, _Fahrenheit 451_, _Animal Farm_ and _A Separate Peace_. They say they are graded for middle and high school, but as a high school teacher, the vocabulary and context exercises seem to me to be aimed at younger children, or those who are struggling readers. Again, I recommend adapting what is here to your own needs.
