4 out of 5 stars Great book for optical filter design.......2006-11-18

Madsen and Zhao did the leading work in this field, and this is their book. It has clear equations.
If you are interesting in the digital optical signal processing, you must have this book on your shelf!

3 out of 5 stars Nice content, but not nicely written.......2001-03-09

~~~~~Contents are pretty good and updated and the examples are found to be very useful.
However, the book is not well written and organized. Some expressions can only be understood by the authors themselves. The readers have to be prepared to spend much more time than they expect to figure out some minor details. Examples lack of step-by-step description. Important details are either missing or skipped in many places, assuming the readers are super-mathematicians.
The book is, I would say,~~ out of a rush-to-publish job. Looking forward to 2nd Edition, if there is one.~
5 out of 5 stars A practical aproach.......2000-09-20
I find this book very useful for engineers who are involve in design and optimization of optical systems for telecommunication industry.The mathematical approach to subjects gives you the oportunity to write and customize your design programs.
Book Description
Wavelet theory originated from research activities in many areas of science and engineering. As a result, it finds applications in a wide range of practical problems. Wavelet techniques are specifically suited for nonstationary signals for which classic Fourier methods are ineffective.
Based on courses taught by the authors at Texas A&M University as well as related conferences, Fundamentals of Wavelets is a textbook offering an up-to-date engineering approach to wavelet theory. It balances a discussion of wavelet theory and algorithms with its far-ranging practical applications in signal processing, image processing, electromagnetic wave scattering, and boundary value problems.
In a clear, progressive format, the book describes:
* Basic concepts of linear algebra, Fourier analysis, and discrete signal analysis
* Theoretical aspects of time-frequency analysis and multiresolution analysis
* Construction of various wavelets
* Algorithms for computing wavelet transformations.
Concluding chapters present interesting applications of wavelets to signal processing and boundary value problems. Fundamentals of Wavelets is an essential introduction to wavelet theory for students and professionals alike in a practical, real-world engineering context.
5 out of 5 stars wavelets for engineers.......2003-01-25
The marriage of signal processing and wavelets has spun off a host of exciting applications of math and algorithms. The use of wavelets outside of math itself is a recent sucess story. As a rule, it was an unexpected combination of ideas,-- as opposed to a single one, that generated the most powerful applications. The present very nice book is aimed at students taking a service course, for example electrical or optical engineers, but it has broader appeal as well. The authors start with basic principles from math, and move on to multicarrier communication systems..., and boundary value probems.
    5 out of 5 stars Classic reference, unfortunately out of print.......2000-05-15
    George Wolberg invented the digital image warping techniques that were used to make the special effects in Willow and The Abyss. "Digital Image Warping" is the classic reference for fast image warping. It is the first place I went to learn how to speed up this operation. Unfortunately, this book is now out of print, but it is still available directly from the author. As the previous reviewer indicates, this is not a programming text; but it is clearly written and explores a wide variety of image warping techniques, clearly describing highly efficient algorithms for each. This book is without peer for this important class of image operations.
    2 out of 5 stars If you are a programmer....keep looking.......1998-12-05
    Wolberg reminds me of certain college professors that I had who excelled at generating a great deal of theorical and mathematical concepts, but never really could offer a practical implementation or application. I bought this book in hopes of learning how to correct aerial and satellite photos. However, the only insight that Wolberg gave to me was a series of equations, followed by the repeated statement that 'you can use these to correct remote sensor data'. Thanks...I already knew that.......
      2 out of 5 stars Good at explaining the basics of GPS, VERY poor reference for actually building a software receiver.......2006-04-17
      This book does a good job at explaining the fundamentals of GPS operation. It breaks things down to an understandable level and presents most material well. However, it is not thorough enough to be used to design a software receiver. The book covers Costas loops and DLL's in a very cursory manner. It is also filled with typos and other errors. If your actually attempting to build a software receiver, try some of these books: "Understanding GPS Principles and Applications" by Elliot Kaplan (Ed.), "Global Positioning System: Theory and Applications Volume 1" by B. W. Parkinson and J. J. Spilker (Ed.'s), "Global Positioning System: Signals Measurements and Performance" by P. Misra and Per Enge. These books are far more detailed and are relatively free of errors.
      4 out of 5 stars perhaps ignore errors in code samples?.......2006-03-05
      Tsui gives a solid exposition of how to use a GPS signal. He describes how the signal is encoded and what you must do to extract the information. It is assumed that you have already worked in communications theory.
      The text also discusses the geometric considerations inherent in understanding the ephemeris data. At one point, we are taken back to basic astronomy and Kepler's laws of motion!
      Another reviewer has remarked that the code samples seem incomplete or wrong. Even so, keep in mind that this is only a small portion of the text. The explanations of the theory appear well founded.
      3 out of 5 stars Wait for a revised 2nd edition.......2003-02-10
      Lets face it, there are plenty of GPS textbooks on the market that satisfy all levels of inquiry.
      My first criticism of the book is that the first six chapters are well covered in most of the standard texts. I believe that the primary reason someone would want to purchase this book is for the last few chapters, (particularly chapter 9 which discusses GPS software receivers), as well as for the accompanying Matlab source code in the textbook. (At least that was my reason).
      My second criticism is that this book desperately needs an editor. There are a tremendous number of grammatical errors and spelling errors that I found incredibly distracting from the contents of the book. In addition, many of the illustrative plots used in the text have no units specified for the axes, and little description of the figures is given in the body of the text.
      Finally, the code that is included at the end of each chapter is poorly organized and poorly documented. There are very few comments in the various code sections and the author insists on using terribly ambiguous variable names. All of which could be forgiven if the Matlab code provided actually worked!! Many of the routines in the all-important 9th chapter on GPS software receivers call user-defined functions that are not actually defined anywhere in the textbook! In an attempt to be proactive, I emailed the author and asked for a copy of the missing Matlab code and was told that the codes are not available for download.
      Disappointing indeed! (I think that an accompanying CD with a snippet of IF data and a set of working Matlab codes would be a wonderful addition to a 2nd edition of the book.)
      For what its worth, I think the approach taken in the textbook is great, but until a revised 2nd edition of the textbook is produced I would recommend that you save your money.
      5 out of 5 stars Guidance Required.......2002-10-21
      I am working on GPS receiver design using software approch . I am referring this book . I have some queries regarding Matlab program given in the book (Chapter 9).Can somebody help ?
      4 out of 5 stars Good Introductory Book in GPS.......2001-07-19
      Very good introductory book if you are a starter in the GPS field.
      The content is definitely targeted at the professional audience who is familiar with GPS and satellite communications. What I liked about the book is that the mathematical derivations are presented in a simple, yet comprehensive manner. There are also some Matlab sample code that describe some of the concepts in each chapter.
      Although this is an introductory book, it may appear daunting to people who do not have a strong understanding of matrix algebra -- not bed-time reading.
      Overall, this is a good book that will satisfy a novice or an intermediate-level professional.
      Book Description
      The discovery of the Fractional Fourier Transform and its role in optics and data management provides an elegant mathematical framework within which to discuss diffraction and other fundamental aspects of optical systems. This book explains how the fractional Fourier transform has allowed the generalization of the Fourier transform and the notion of the frequency transform. It will serve as the standard reference on Fourier transforms for many years to come.
      I am an optical engineering student and felt that this book was quite understandable (although I read the optics back half first, which then motivated the mathematical front half for me). It gave me additional insight into the Fourier transform as well as the applications of Fourier analysis in optics. I also learned as much on optics from this book as I have from any dedicated optics book.       From my point of view as a deeply intested reader of the book, this book is an excellent source book for those who want to increase his/her knowledge on concepts of signals and sytems. It is a comprehensive study on the signal and system representation in generalized frequency domains with very useful applications in different era of electrical engineering. Starting with a general representation theory and then focusing on time-frequency representations, the book prepares the reader for the novel generalized Fourier trasnform. In this new world, the traditional frequency domain is no more than a special condition. Thus, in any application that Fourier transform can be used, the FrFT lends itself to a variety of applications including image restoration, denoising, optical wave propogation, filtering, quantum mechanics, information theory etc., generally as an optimization problem over a contiuum of frequency domains. You should read this book if you are a EE. Thanks to the authors.
      5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference on Fractional Fourier Transforms.......2001-03-16
      This is a delightful reference book on the Fractional Fourier Transform. The authors did a great job explaining systems theory leading up to a thorough treatment of the Fractional Fourier Transform and other fractional transforms. Plenty of references are cited leading the reader to a rich source of background and follow-up material. Later chapters delve into suggested applications which complete a rather pleasing read of the entire subject. Buy this book.
        5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference on image processing.......1997-03-26
        Advanced and extremely practical, this book is a must-have for an image processing professional. It is rather rare positioned between the entry level do-it-yourself literature and theoretic texts not descending to implementation details. The book manages to maintain a near ideal balance between theory insights and practical implementation: all covered techniques are also described in pseudo-algorithmic language, which makes it especially easy to use within your software as a complete piece or a good start point for further development. Accompanying disk contains C code of the algorithms
