5 out of 5 stars Very good Hobbiest book.......2006-11-10

Plenty of information for make very good projects, unfortunately for my taste, the autor only works with PIC microcontrollers, perhaps a very good book

5 out of 5 stars Very good book!!.......2003-09-18

This book is great for the beginner. Iovine explains the subject matter in a way that makes it exciting and fun. He has a way of getting the exciting vision of building robots across to the reader. The book makes it easy to get parts needed for the projects from the authors web site. I'm really looking forward to his new book, Pic Robotics!!!

5 out of 5 stars I'm glad I finally found a decent book on pics!.......2002-06-03

This was the 3rd book I purchased on pics. The other 2 books - one by Myke Predko (awful), the other by David L. Benson (dissapointing.)

I wish this had been the first. Although not geared specificly towards pics, that was my reason for buying it. I was interested in pics and robotics; so this book was right up my alley.

Admittedly the book has numerous plugs for a company the guy obviously works for, owns, or gets kickbacks from! And he wants you to put out a considerable about of cash from the get go to purchase items he wants you to use in order to follow along with him. However, that doesn't bother me. I never build any projects I see in these type of books. I only use them for learning - I build my own projects.

This book did teach me quite a bit about pics. Which was my goal. He didn't bog you down with the history or innards of pics like other books. Which I am not interested in. The book was a great mixture of hardware and software topics...

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in pics... Subsequently I purchased another book by him simply because I saw his name on it and I wasn't dissapointed! I'm looking forward to other books by John Iovine in the future...

4 out of 5 stars Projects can be a bit pricy........2002-03-13

The illustrations and text I found to be very helpful for a project I was working on, but the supplies the book recommends can usually de difficult to find, and can tend to be a bit pricy.
I recommend visiting a local toy store after deciding on a project, and buying toys with the parts you need. Its more fun to make one thing into another anyway.

5 out of 5 stars This book has changed my life........2002-01-23

I bought this book with the humble desire of creating a simple companion. After I finished, the Creation turned on me and my family and reprogrammed my VCR. It then proceeded to change the message on my answering machine. It somehow convinced my Nissan truck not to allow me inside. I fear for my life. How could I have let it go this far? All I really wanted was a cute little Furby but I ended up with a cyber-monster with dreams of wiping out humans and creating a robotic Utopian Hell.....other than that, the book was pretty cool.

        Book Description

Neural networks and fuzzy systems are model free control design approaches that represent an advantage over classical control when dealing with complicated nonlinear actuator dynamics. Neuro-Fuzzy Control of Industrial Systems with Actuator Nonlinearities brings neural networks and fuzzy logic together with dynamical control systems. Each chapter presents powerful control approaches for the design of intelligent controllers to compensate for actuator nonlinearities such as time delay, friction, deadzone, and backlash that can be found in all industrial motion systems, plus a thorough development, rigorous stability proofs, and simulation examples for each design. In the final chapter, the authors develop a framework to implement intelligent control schemes on actual systems. Rigorous stability proofs are further verified by computer simulations, and appendices contain the computer code needed to build intelligent controllers for real-time applications.

            Book Description

Two important subproblems of computer vision are the detection and recognition of 2D objects in gray-level images. This book discusses the construction and training of models, computational approaches to efficient implementation, and parallel implementations in biologically plausible neural network architectures. The approach is based on statistical modeling and estimation, with an emphasis on simplicity, transparency, and computational efficiency.

The book describes a range of deformable template models, from coarse sparse models involving discrete, fast computations to more finely detailed models based on continuum formulations, involving intensive optimization. Each model is defined in terms of a subset of points on a reference grid (the template), a set of admissible instantiations of these points (deformations), and a statistical model for the data given a particular instantiation of the object present in the image. A recurring theme is a coarse to fine approach to the solution of vision problems. The book provides detailed descriptions of the algorithms used as well as the code, and the software and data sets are available on the Web.

            Book Description

Fuzzy Logic for Embedded Systems Applications, by a recognized expert in the field, covers all the basic theory relevant to electronics design, with particular emphasis on embedded systems, and shows how the techniques can be applied to shorten design cycles and handle logic problems that are tough to solve using conventional linear techniques. All the latest advances in the field aree discussed and practical circuit design examples presented.

Fuzzy logic has been found to be particularly suitable for many embedded control applications. The intuitive nature of the fuzzy-based system design saves engineers time and reduces costs by shortening product development cycles and making system maintenance and adjustments easier. Yet despite its wide acceptanceand perhaps because of its nameit is still misunderstood and feared by many engineers. There is a need for embedded systems designersboth hardware and softwareto get up to speed on the principles and applications of fuzzy logic in order to ascertain when and how to use them appropriately.

Fuzzy Logic for Embedded Systems Applications provides practical guidelines for designing electronic circuits and devices for embedded systems using fuzzy-based logic. It covers both theory and applications with design examples.

            * Unified approach to fuzzy electronics from an engineering point of view
            * Easy to follow with plenty of examples
            * Review and evaluation of free resources

5 out of 5 stars Fuzzy Logic for Embedded Systems Applications.......2005-03-19

The book is written in a language that makes it accessible to beginners in the field of fuzzy logic as well as experts, since it contains top notch research on the state of the art of the topic.
Embedded system design using fuzzy logic algorithms is made easy through practical examples.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book. If you want a concise, well written book that is not overbearing and is actually very user friendly and you are interested in fuzzy logic application algorithms this is your book.

2 out of 5 stars Too much padding, too many typos.......2004-09-08

While this book does provide a reasonable overview, I found it rather disappointing.

It has too many errors. With highly technical material, it is imperative that the information is correct or else you can't trust it. For example a minus instead of a plus does not help when explaining terminology.

Only half the book is really about fuzzy logic. There is far too much padding eg. 1.large diagrams showing Moore's Law and the layers in an IC gate. These are not subjects that should be covered in a book on fuzzy logic and one is forced to conclude that the author had a page quota to be reached and did it by adding these secions and large verbose reference sections.

A worked example or an appendix showing an algorithm in C would have been far more useful.

5 out of 5 stars Embedded Applications with "Fuzzy Logic".......2004-02-06

For someone looking for fuzzy modeling and control into embedded systems this book is excellent. The author provides a firm fuzzy concepts necessary to design intelligent systems and gives the reader a solid background for further studies and real world applications. Embedded systems design case studies overview is something that all embedded system developers should understand but many don't take the time. It is thorough, without being arcane or pedantic.

In summary the book contains the right material, it is presented in an easy to absorb manor and is practically oriented. I highly recommended it to embedded engineering students, or engineers and managers facing the challenges of fuzzy logic based project. I'll consider five stars for this book.

3 out of 5 stars Good but many errors.......2004-01-23

Good introduction about fuzzy logic plus a ton of web resources. I gave it 3 stars because so many wording errors in this book.

              Book Description

Can a machine really have feelings? Well, even a humble thermostat knows when it gets too hot -- and can do something about it. But can a machine think? Does it have a personality? How would you know? In this collection of essays we hear from an international array of computer and brain scientists who are actively working from both the machine and human ends of things to bridge the gap between the mind and the machine.

              Book Description

Mobile Robotics: A Practical Introduction (2nd edition) is an excellent introduction to the foundations and methods used for designing completely autonomous mobile robots. A fascinating, cutting-edge, research topic, autonomous mobile robotics is now taught in more and more universities. In this book you are introduced to the fundamental concepts of this complex field via twelve detailed case studies that show how to build and program real working robots. Topics covered in clued learning, autonomous navigation in unmodified, noisy and unpredictable environments, and high fidelity robot simulation. This new edition has been updated to include a new chapter on novelty detection, and provides a very practical introduction to mobile robotics for a general scientific audience. It is essential reading for 2nd and 3rd year undergraduate students and postgraduate students studying robotics, artificial intelligence, cognitive science and robot engineering. The update and overview of core concepts in mobile robotics will assist and encourage practitioners of the field and set challenges to explore new avenues of research in this exiting field. The author is Senior Lecturer at the Department of Computer Science at the University of Essex. "A very fine overview over the relevant problems to be solved in the attempt to bring intelligence to a moving vehicle." Professor Dr. Ewald von Puttkamer, University of Kaiserslautern "Case studies show ways of achieving an impressive repertoire of kinds of learned behaviour, navigation and map-building. The book is an admirable introduction to this modern approach to mobile robotics and certainly gives a great deal of food for thought. This is an important and though-provoking book." Alex M. Andrew in Kybernetes Vol 29 No 4 and Robotica Vol 18

5 out of 5 stars The book provides a very good introduction to mobile robots........2000-04-30

This is a very good introductory book on mobile robots. It assumes no background of the readers in the subject. Chapter 3 provides a introduction to the hardwared aspects including sensors and actuators. Chapter 4 on machine learning by robots is also very very interesting. The case studies presented in chapter 5 and 6 will be very much useful to the new-entrants of this discipline. Chapter 7 on analysis of robot behaviour is important for the researchers working in the discipline.I like the book for its simplicity in presentation and direct reference to the points to be discussed, rather than providing a lengthy introduction to the topics. The phrase "A practcical introduction" in the title is really worthwhile for the book.
