Intriguing thriller.......2007-10-09
This is an extremely well-written book that keeps the reader guesing until the very end. There are a myriad of disparate characters, and all of them are well developed. The plot line involves an old manuscript that may or may not lead to an unknown play by Shakespeare, and it is very difficult to discern who are the "good Guys" and who are the "bad guys". Even by the end of the book I was still a bit confused as to what really happened, and whether or not the manuscript was genuine. If you like literary thrillers, and puzzles to figure out, you will certainly enjoy this book.

Although I like thrillers, including those with literary themes, I didn't finish this one. I just didn't care enough about most of the characters to warrent further reading. An Olympic weight-lifting lawyer...an ex-con priest...these just didn't work at all for me.
Two thumbs up!.......2007-09-30
Having read Gruber's first two books Tropic of Night and Valley of Bones I wasn't sure I was ready for a third. The first two having left me a bit nonplussed. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy books and movies that take a detour around reality but those two books made a right angle turn somewhere and I'm not sure I'm over them yet!
TBoAAS is a whole other beast. Slow moving, tedious at times, it none-the-less hooked me and drew me in until I could not walk away. I felt that that the first 2/3's of the book moved at a glacial pace. Which is great if you want to fully involve youself in the characters and the plot. At some point, which I can't precisely pin down, the pace picked up and hauled me, open-mouthed, to the final pages.
Honestly, who would have thought combining a self-absorbed, womanizing lawyer (a heavy lifter, literally, to boot) with a dreamy young man who believes life is literally determined by the movies and setting them on what may or may not be a wild goose chase for an unknown Shakespearean manuscript could prove to be so entertaining?
As a mark of how well done the book is, I shed a few tears at the end, not because it was sad but because the story was over. To date only two other writers have affected me that way.
You don't have to be a literary, artsy type to get into this story, btw. You DO need to persevere long enough to let the story get hold of you. Then you're stuck. Happily so, I might add.
Delightful reading.......2007-09-28
What a wonderful, amusing book. It reminded me of Saul Bellow's Herzog combined with a much smarter version of The Davinci Code. It gets a wee bit confusing at the end as layers of intrigue are peeled away, but still a delightful, fresh voice.

It appears that all writers are fascinated with the genre of "what if" fiction and Michael Gruber is no exception. In the Book of Air & Shadows he asks the reader "What if a couple of modern day antiquarian bookstore employees (Albert Crosetti and Carolyn Rolly)accidently discover letters and cyphers purportedly written by an intimate of William Shakespeare alluding to the existance of a hidden Shakespeare play written in the Bards own hand? Building on this first what if, he continues to tease us with more what if's. What if an Intellectual Property lawyer were to become involved in the question of potential ownership of the manuscript. (Is it really finders keepers). What if pursuit of the manuscript resulted in the brutal murder of a Shakespearan scholar? And so it goes.
In a chronicle liberally peppered with offbeat characters in unlikely situations, complex codes, and illuminating historical information, Gruber interweaves stories of detection, deception, and a few pithy observations, i.e. "We sometimes fall in love with unsuitable people, which is why Cupid carries a bow and arrows and not a clipboard with a stack of personality tests".
Suggestion: Before you begin this book, all prospective readers should get out their high school copy of the Canterbury Tales and read a couple of excerpts so that they are up to speed and prepared for the writing style put forth in the "Ciphered letters" and "The Bracegirdle Letters" chapters.
Air & Shadows would not be a contender for any literary awards, but in general, it is a satisfying read for a lazy afternoon.

Not for Amateurs!.......2007-09-15
This is an excellent reference book and readable (mostly) as well. That said, if you're a homeowner just looking for a "how-to" on maybe additional zoning or adding a new loop, this is not the book for you. You could quite literally design a system for the most complex residence using this book IF you know the basics of plumbing and HVAC work and are pretty good at basic mathmatics. It is not so much a how-to as a what-to book, so bear that in mind.

Great book. Not all the way through it yet, but giving me more confidence to do my own radiant heat project. Heat loss calcs not a big mystery any more. Minor lack of detail clarifications when it comes to underslab foam insulation options. EPS--Expanded foam is perfectly acceptable alternative (and cheaper) than XPS--Extruded, when ordered to engineered compressive strength requirements. Otherwise it is giving me excellent ideas for doing my job right the first time. Don't be disuaded by cost of book. Value is there in spades--included CD is very nice.
Hydronics design.......2007-05-14
As an architect, I was impressed with the clarity of the information and the step-by-step design process. It was so helpful, I even bought the software package the authors have developed for easily calculating hydronic designs.
Good Solid Engineering, THE Hydronics Reference Manual.......2007-02-02
I am a special projects manager for a major tankless water heater company. I bought this book to further my knowledge of hydronic and radiant heating so I could better assist our customers when they call me for advice.
I have some experience with plumbing in the solar field and have attended a class at Uponor, so I come to this book with an amateur's level of experience.
I have only started the book, but I can say that it is extremely complete and well written. From what I have come across in trade journal articles that deal with our business, John Siegenthaler is no doubt the "Rajah of
Radiant" and all things hot water.
I use it constantly now as a reference book to learn and to help others. I plan to use it someday soon to help design my own radiant system in my solar powered straw-bale retirement home "out yonder" somewhere.
The reason I rated it as a 4 instead of a 5 is because I could not find anything about using tankless heaters as a heat source. John covers everything from normal residential gas fired tanks to high efficiency complex boilers, but doesn't address tankless which is becoming more and more popular with radiant because of the low temperature requirements (85º ~ 100º).
This second edition is dated 2004. Unfortunately, hydronic technology is moving at warp speed and we are already in 2007!

Fighting at 25,000 feet in thin, freezing air that no warriors had ever encountered before, bomber crews battled new kinds of assaults on body and mind. Air combat was deadly but intermittent: periods of inactivity and anxiety were followed by short bursts of fire and fear. Unlike infantrymen, bomber boys slept on clean sheets, drank beer in local pubs, and danced to the swing music of Glenn Miller's Air Force band, which toured U.S. air bases in England. But they had a much greater chance of dying than ground soldiers. In 1943, an American bomber crewman stood only a one-in-five chance of surviving his tour of duty, twenty-five missions. The Eighth Air Force lost more men in the war than the U.S. Marine Corps.
The bomber crews were an elite group of warriors who were a microcosm of America -- white America, anyway. (African-Americans could not serve in the Eighth Air Force except in a support capacity.) The actor Jimmy Stewart was a bomber boy, and so was the "King of Hollywood," Clark Gable. And the air war was filmed by Oscar-winning director William Wyler and covered by reporters like Andy Rooney and Walter Cronkite, all of whom flew combat missions with the men.
The Anglo-American bombing campaign against Nazi Germany was the longest military campaign of World War II, a war within a war. Until Allied soldiers crossed into Germany in the final months of the war, it was the only battle fought inside the German homeland.
Strategic bombing did not win the war, but the war could not have been won without it. American
airpower destroyed the rail facilities and oil refineries that supplied the German war machine. The bombing campaign was a shared enterprise: the British flew under the cover of night while American bombers attacked by day, a technique that British commanders thought was suicidal.
Masters of the Air is a story, as well, of life in wartime England and in the German prison camps, where tens of thousands of airmen spent part of the war. It ends with a vivid description of the grisly hunger marches captured airmen were forced to make near the end of the war through the country their bombs destroyed.
Drawn from recent interviews, oral histories, and American, British, German, and other archives, Masters of the Air is an authoritative, deeply moving account of the world's first and only bomber war.

The Story of the "Mighty Eighth".......2007-09-08
This well-written and exhaustively researched book chronicles the rise of the American Eighth Air Force from its early days in England to VE Day in 1945.
At the outset of the war, the British believed that night bombing was the best way to attack German cities and industry. However, once America entered the war, they chose a philosophy different from that of the British. The Americans believed that daylight precision strategic bombing was the only way to defeat the Germans. The British, on the other hand, still favored nighttime area bombing. This difference of opinion between the Americans and British was never really settled, but by combining the "round the clock" attacks of American planes during the day and British planes at night, the Germans faced an unending stream of planes and bombs.
When the Eighth flew their first mission in the fall of 1942, they could barely muster thirty planes, but at the end of the war, they were putting up well over one thousand, with several hundred fighter escorts as well. The German Luftwaffe could not match these incredible numbers of planes, and, despite such tactics as underground production and introducing the world's first jet fighter, there was little they could do to stop the Allied bombing.
Differences also existed between the British and Americans regarding target selection. The British favored carpet bombing Germany's cities with little or no regard for civilian casualties. The Americans favored targeting German industry (synthetic oil production, ball bearings, and transportation hubs). The Americans believed that the systematic destruction of the German economy would bring about surrender quicker than the British belief of "terror attacks" designed to break the will of the German people.
An interesting point made by the author is whether or not strategic bombing was effective against the Germans. A preponderance of the evidence would suggest that the answer to this question is "yes", but there are some compelling counter-points made in the book.
This is a fine work of aviation history. The book is well-researched and is easy to read and understand. Every aspect of the Allied bomber offensive in Europe is covered in great detail. The author also includes many personal testimonials from the men who flew the B-17s and B-24s against the Germans. An interesting chapter is also devoted to the Swiss government and how they treated "captured" Allied fliers. The terrifying incendiary raid on Dresden as well as the horrific destruction of Berlin is also told in vivid detail.
I give this fine book my highest recommendation. If you're looking for information on the Eighth Air Force and the air war over Europe, this is the book to read.
Does anyone at Simon & Schuster proofread?.......2007-09-04
Mr. Miller's book includes not only substantial research into prior publications but very interesting research based on letters and interviews he's found on his own. It's a good book. But if you're a member of the word police you'll be annoyed by the many proofreading errors. Here's a sample: "In the heavily defended Ruhr, with its permanent cloud of industrial smoke, the number was only in ten." (p.54) Should have been "within ten miles." Some errors are so simple a spell checker would have caught them: (p.199) "spining" for spinning. And there are some factual errors as well. Miller attributes contrails to wingtips. They're created by engines. It's much easier to criticize than to write. Still, S&S should have, with the several editors listed in the acknowledgments, caught the errors. I have no idea whether they have been corrected in the paperback.
The Unsung Heroes of The Eighth Air Force.......2007-08-26
This is an overdue tribute to those young men who gave their lives, in great numbers, fighting the air war over Germany in WWII.To those who think WWII was fought without major tatical errors, this book will be a revelation. In tribute to the kids who lost their lives in this bloody effort, everyone should be required to read this story. If you thought that service in the Air Force was a cake walk read this book.

The Bible of the Field.......2007-03-24
When as a young physicist I started working on rocket nozzle design most of the material in this book had to be dug up from a paper here, a book there, or else it simply wasn't known. Now here's everything you need to know in a couple of chapters. And besides nozzle design, here in information on virtually every aspect of rockets from the design to the propellents, from concepts to testing. Most of the book is on conventional liquid or solid fuel chemical rockets, because that's where most of the action is today. There is a new chapter (from my older edition) on electrical propulsion.
The book is suitable for use as a textbook for either a one or two term course, or as an introductory book to an engineer now moving into the field, or as a reference book for the experienced. It is especially good to use when you need to come up to speed on some area of the business where you don't normally work.
The one weakness of the book is the lack of discussion on computers either in terms of engine control systems or of the design software that is avaiable. Next revision I guess.
If you love rocket propulsion you must get this book.......2007-01-19
I have loved rocket propulsion in all its forms (real and imagined) since I was following the Apollo 11 mission on television. This book will help you with every aspect of rocketry whether for direct professional relevance, hobbyist development or whether you dream with many of us of solving the problems that will allow us (as so eloquently put by the late Carl Sagan) to "dip our toes in the cosmic ocean". I believe we must swim between the stars and the nuts and bolts foundations for doing it are in this book. Go get it. Lets do it.
Rocket Scientists Use It Too.......2006-11-17
I started work with a rocket design group fresh out of a MS in mechanical engineering. One of the first things everybody told me was to pick up a copy of Sutton. It's a good thing I did, because I immediately started referring to it for just about every project I worked. After just a few months it became a dog eared, marked, and well used reference.
It's a few years later now, and I don't work with rockets full time any more. I've forgotten enough of the details that today when I was explaining a bit of rocketry to a coworker, out came Sutton again. It's still a great book.

This was a required test for a rocket propulsion class, but it has become an invaluable resource for many classes. Purchased for at least 20% less than other outlets.
A Must-Have Textbook for every Aerospace Engineer.......2004-03-27
This is the single best book on rocket propulsion systems, covering both liquid and solid rocket engines, hybrid rocket systems, and a dedicated chapter on electric propulsion. The authors include excellent illustrations and graphs to enhance the text, and practical examples which help the reader to grasp the theory. After loaning a copy of this book for over two years from my library, i finally bought it! Definitely recommended to all engineers and scientists who want to expand into the area of rocket propulsion.

A slightly different perspective?.......2007-08-24
After "retiring" for the second time in my life, I found myself in a position to attend "re-training" due to the fact that I had closed my corporation after selling my business. In other words, the state considered me "unemployed". One of my options was a trade school and their programs. HVAC\R seemed interesting so I went with it. The above mentioned book was the standard issue. At first I was very pleased with it, although I did struggle to get through the chapters. I thought it was me, although in my first four "courses" I was carrying a 99% average, and tutoring younger students in Manual J, Manual D, and Heating Controls. It wasn't me. As I have had time to study this industry at my own pace, taking courses when I want, and taking time off to hone my skills with those in the business, I find that there are many books available that are much easier to understand, read,and follow. These "other" books contain as much, if not more practical information, and relate to real world requirements much easier, without having to decipher what the edited author intended. Had I not been "given" this book as a part of my "tuition", I would now be screaming for my money back. For what ever it is worth, one of the authors has written books on his own and they are excellent. I actually purchased several for "fellow students" that were struggling and these students were helped immensely. Perhaps it is the company that published the book. I am not sure. But I do know that I have looked at other books published by the the same company and have either returned them or not purchased them in the first place. Just my opinion. I may be correct, I may not.

Many pictures, good text, complete, I recommend it. For all those that begin and they are already work in HVACR. The only problem is that it doesn't work with units international system (metric). It could be an international book. Greetings from spain.
great book for learning refrigeration.......2006-11-15
as a homeowner considering central air and seeing how idiot contractors screw people firsthand, I wanted to learn as much as I could about refrigeration and HVAC before hiring anybody. This book is great, from a design and selection standpoint on refrigeration all the way to installation and maintenance practices. I can easily see why it's a college textbook, too bad my college texts back in the day didn't explain the subject as well. You can basically read this book and understand refrigeration without taking a class.

Thanks to the length of time this book has been available and the frequent revisions to the copyright, it continues to get bigger and better as time goes on.
My bookshelf has at least 5 of those revisions that frequently get utilized . Each revision builds upon the prior publication and expands on the detail they provide.
This publication represents an established reference standard for the HVAC/R Industry. It is especially valuable because of the extent of the different technical topics presented within its covers.
Some have tried to copy the format and the content but still fail to match its quality and level of professionalism.

We have used this book as a study textbook for the last two semesters at college. As a student it has proven to be very useful. It has very good illustrations and diagrams along with helpful insight to the nuts and bolts of all A/C units. Where the frustration part comes in and is a mystery to me is what ever department that was responsible for reviewing the end of chapter questions and the questions in the test bank dropped the ball. It is quite evident that the questions and the text don't correspond. This leads one to believe that the department that is responsible for test questions and chapter questions do not have a back-ground in Air Conditioning / Refrigeration. I have used a lot of frustrating time in a futile effort to match answers with text. Its a shame that such an informative textbook be degraded on default.

I have been SEVERELY disappointed in Linda Howard's books lately, but I actually enjoyed this book....for the most part. The ending came rather quickly and was a total surprise....and it was disappointing that some characters didn't get what was coming to them....the story just ended abruptly.
Will Seth grow up and get his own novel with his own strong woman???

I liked this book. And as some others have said, it's also a course in survival. Who would think that pine needles in hot water tastes ok as a tea? Or perhaps being able to eat the pine nuts for protein? It was a great story, exciting, probably based on tried and true survival methods and a love story as well. It was entertaining, kept me reading and very interested in what would possibly happen next. And I was surprised by the ending. So to me, it's a good book. Not the best or greatest---but good. I'd suggest it to anyone needing a book to read at the beach or on a plane.
Surprisingly good book.......2007-09-25
I made a huge mistake before I read this book. I read the many reviews on it, and many of them panned Up Close and Dangerous. Pish tosh! The reviewers need to get a review clue. Howard gives her readers a tightly plotted book. She lays a trail of crumbs for readers so that they can understand both Cameron and Bailey. Howard's point is that we can't judge people without knowing them. So Cam and Bailey come to know each other under adversity caused by a plane crash. She is more than a rich man's darling. He is more than some macho jock who despises her. Being thrown together as a result of the crash helps Bailey and Cameron to build an enduring relationship in which each has a full gauge of what the other is capable of under pressure.
Another aspect of the novel is how Howard tosses dust in her reader's eyes but casting suspicion on and then clearing Bailey's stepchildren. Though they both hate her, her stepson, because of the accident, learns to channel his hate to achieve a positive objective. In this way, he realizes his father's ambition for him. Though he learns about Bailey and understands why she is his stepmother and is in control of things, he openly acknowledges that he prefers to have the status quo remain in place in order to continue his growth and development as a responsible human being.
Howard's novel even has a surprising twist at the end. Perhaps it's not so surprising. Anyway, the novel's plot is a good one, and it works.
The reader should not expect the usual heat that can burn up characters in a Howard novel. Instead, one sees an eventual growth in relationship that comes to be based on trust rather than sheer heat. Besides, it's somewhat difficult to flame out when a guy's injured for good part of things.
I liked this novel very much, and recommend it to other readers. I read it as a library borrow, and will purchase it when the paperback comes out. Good for you, Linda. Good read, worth the money.
Stock Howard.......2007-09-23
I've been a Linda Howard reader for some time but I've seen a steady decrease in quality with a corresponding increase in price. Howard seems to sleepwalk through the novel. Three fourths of it consisting of a survival guide on what to do if you're in a plane crash in the mountains. I'm sorry but this isn't what I'm looking for in romantic suspense, especially when it doesn't advance the plot (what little there is). The main characters are barely sketched in and the ending gotcha (in the last 3 pages no less) seem an afterthought. I really don't think any of her recent novels should be hardcover with the accompanying hardcover price tag. I don't begrudge Howard making a profit on her work but really, at least make the work worth it. If you want to read an author with real character development and great plots pick up the Dirk & Steele novels by Majorie M. Liu.

This highly technical read is not for the mere curious reader or fan of this great American woman. This book contains a vivid picture of the search for America's sweetheart of 1937,Amelia Earhart and her navigator ,Fred Noonan. An intricate compilation of radio transmissions provides a picture of an overwhelmed search party, miscommunicated information and an under skilled pilot. This is not the whole picture and if one seeks a glimpse into the woman behind the incident this is not the book for you

Amelia Earhart on Fantasy Island?.......2007-06-29
I have followed Mr. Gillespie's search for years, and it is, sadly, largely based on wishful thinking instead of facts, such as the fuel capacity of Amelia's Lockheed 10E Electra. Simply put, there is NO WAY it could have reached where he claims it is. The book is an interesting read, and reasonably well done, and there are some opposing viewpoints presented. Factually, though, it is an illusion (one that has paid Mr. Gillespie quite well for a long time). An entertaining read, but not historical research-just a flight of fancy--
Finding Amelia.......2007-03-19
The book is a good chronicle of the last flight, and what is (and isn't known). While there isn't anything really new that hasn't been covered before, the book is a good compliment to others previously published on the Earhart story. The focus on (mis)communications highlights the thread of errors that lead to the tragedy. The inclusion of the disc (a nice touch!) containing the source data allows the reader to draw their own conclusions.

This is an academic work by a contingent of skilled scientific experts whose writings & basic investigative work was coordinated, in part & on behalf of TIGHAR (Int. Group of Historical Aircraft Recovery) & updated 2004. The 27 chapters describe a forensic approach to solve the mystery of aviatrix AE's disappearance enroute 2,223 miles to Howland Isle from Lae, New Guinea, July 2, 1937.
The book's format & length makes for difficult reading: -- it is based on best available scientific evidences & hypotheses of multiple disciplines of archeology, geophysics, aeronautics, anthropology, and review of both private & governmental archival information in addition to tabulating their search findings on tiny remote South Pacific Phoenix Isle "Gardner", but renamed Nikumaroro, or "Niku". Author was a principle TIGHAR investigator taking part in expeditions to Niku, & he writes with authority, -- having "been there, done that!"
Inclusion of more than 100 photos, illustrations, maps, etc., makes the reading more easily understood & tolerable: -- for it is not a book one picks up and being enchanted 'reads from cover to cover' without pause. Many of the chapters begin with stanzas of word parodies to be sung to certain melodies, attributable to TIGHAR but not author King. The parodies I found to be highly irregular, unsettling & not in best taste, so downgraded book from 5* to 4*.

Those persistent TIGHARs are back with more suggestive but inconclusive research about what happened to Amelia Earhart, who disappeared in 1937 -- somewhere.
Every so often, somebody shows up in Hawaii with a kooky theory about Earhart, ranging from shot by the Japanese as a spy to still alive and keeping house in New Jersey.
The International Group for Historical Aircraft Recovery is far from kooky.
For one thing, they appear to have managed the trick of being zealous without becoming zealots. As lead author Thomas King puts it, "Most people have more pressing things to do" than hunt for a lost airplane that, given the odds, would more likely than not be under three miles of water.
The TIGHARs work, for free, in their spare time, on the assumption that, despite the geographical odds, Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan didn't just run out of gas and sink under the ocean. They think Earhart missed her target but may have crash landed on an intermittently inhabited (but in 1937 empty) island named Nikumaroro, where Earhart and Noonan might have either survived for a while or been eaten by crabs.
It's "a mystery that can't be put down," King says.
But hard to pin down.
Since the publication of "Amelia Earhart's Shoes" in 2001, the TIGHARs have run down more physical evidence, including things that look a lot like panels from a Lockheed Electra, but nothing definitive yet. The revised, 2005 edition is preferred over the first edition.
The story of the hunt also reveals a great deal of fascinating information about the South Pacific, which is big, mostly empty and weird.

Who says historical research and science have to be boring? In Amelia Earhart's Shoes, Dr. Tom King and others take us on a winding (sometimes loopy, even!) journey that tries to answer the question: What happened to famed aviatrix Amelia Earhart and renowned navigator Fred Noonan in 1937 after they vanished during her around-the-world flight attempt?
Amelia Earhart's Shoes does not pretend to solve the mystery - it does show that by applying the scientific method to a popular event, you can strip away all the myths and fables and assumptions and come up with relatively simple explanations that can be tested to see if they are true or false. That the scientific method may upset a few of those legendary apple carts along the way is proof that it works - something is either true or not true, provable or not provable. In Earhart's case, the truth may turn out to be much more mundane than some of the more colorful "solutions" to her disappearance would have us believe.
There is a lot of information in Shoes, but it is presented in an easy to read, almost chatty style (think ghost stories around the campfire while making s'mores) that keeps you turning the pages to see what the heck is going to happen next. The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR) has now been to the South Pacific eight times to try and prove or disprove their hypothesis that Earhart and Noonan missed their destination, tiny Howland Island, and landed on another deserted island, only to die (or perhaps be completely missed) before the frantic searchers could get to them.
Amelia Earhart's Shoes is a great read that should be on the bookshelf of everyone interested in what really did happen out there in the vastness of the Pacific Ocean almost 70 years ago.
Fantastic, not at all dry!.......2006-05-02
I saw one of the people involved in this project speak at EAA's big national air show in Oshkosh, WI last summer. It was the most popular lecture session I attended while I was there. Interested, I picked up this book expecting a thorough but dry, academic read.
Was I ever wrong! This book is not only fascinating, it's funny! It's written with some dry humor that made me want to keep reading more. And the authors lay out a strong argument, to boot. It does make one wonder...
I Couldn't Put This Book Down!.......2002-05-03
I picked up this book at my library on a lark. I've always been interested in what really happened to Amelia Earhart, but always just assumed that her plane crashed into the ocean. This book, however, completely opened my eyes to a new hypothosis: that Amelia and her navigator managed to land on an island and send out radio signals for help. The information presented in this book isn't just wild guesses and conspiracy theories - the authors make a point of backing up their thoughts with cold, hard evidence. I was hooked from the first page and got so engrossed that I ended up not doing my work at my job just so that I could finish a few more chapters. The book also has a wicked sense of humor and debunks the myth that scientists are just stodgy old guys. I'd reccomend this book to anyone with even an ounce of curosity. I'm holding my breath until Dr. Tom King and the other authors put out another book on Amelia. I can't wait to see what they find!

Good for the AFAST.......2007-08-14
This review is for anyone taking the Army's AFAST exam. I'm not sure how good this book is for other exams.
There are two reasons I recommend this book for the Army's AFAST exam;
First of all, you need to really practice the Complex Movements section of the test. It seems to make or break most test takers and is very hard to understand if you are unfamiliar with it. This practice alone makes the book worth it.
Second, the Army AFAST exam isn't really a hard exam, however it's graphics are so poor it makes it a hard exam. Therefore, using this book to teach yourself how the exam expects you to recognize its poor graphics pays off really well during exam time.
For these two reasons, I recommend this book. It's not a great 'review' book, however it will teach you how to take the test...which can be just as important.
Good but incomplete for people who struggle in math.......2007-07-15
Arco's Military Flight Aptitude Tests study guide gives you a good overview of the subjects that you will be tested on. If you have a strong backround in basic physics and math, then you should be able to get by with this book. But if you need extra help relearning math and physics, then I would recomend buying Kaplans GRE study guide, since it will actually teach you the concepts (I stink at math, so I really needed a book that put the concepts in simpler terms, so that I could do well on the math word problems).
Arco's MFAT just has sample questions, but it does teach you some stuff about the flight material you will need to learn. So I recomend you buy it, because you not going to find any book that can teach you some of the unique flight (and natical if your joining the Navy) material that you will find in Arco's book. But if you need a math and physics update, then buy Kaplans GRE study guide.

Far from perfect, but much better than the Cliffs Notes version........2007-01-16
While there are many things wrong with this test prep book, it is much better than the Cliffs Notes MFAT prep book. The Spatial Apperception in this book is slightly different than the corresponding section on the ASTB, but it is much better than the same part of the cliffs book where most of the questions have incorrect answers and are poorly presented. Use this in conjunction with the marine ASTB gouge, and whatever other gouge you can find at the AirWarriors website. And be sure to cram on the math as it is the most important part for your OAR. I got 65 OAR, and 8,7,7 on my first try.

This book is good, but the best study guide is the marine one you can find online. this book also works well for the afoqt, but remember that they changed the test. There is no electric maze.
Good Book across the board.......2006-11-13
I am a recent college grad and was interested in joining the Navy to fly planes. I had no clue on what becoming an officer meant or what to expect on the journey to get there. The book gives you practice test for each branch of the military (navy army air force etc) for their entrance exams. I was studying for the ASVAB. If you have a basic understanding of math and take some time (about a week) to familiarize yourself with the test you'll do fine. The book also gave valuable info on different types of flight paths to go, ex. pilot, NFO. All in all if I had to do it again I'd probably purchase this book. However I found out later in my search online that you can actually download this book. I forgot which site it was but a few minutes to find it will probably save you a little bit of money in the end.
