Book Description
Winning by not competing: a fresh approach to strategy Since the dawn of the industrial age, companies have engaged in head-to-head competition in search of sustained, profitable growth. They have fought for competitive advantage, battled over market share, and struggled for differentiation. Yet these hallmarks of competitive strategy are not the way to create profitable growth in the future. In a book that challenges everything you thought you knew about the requirements for strategic success, W. Chan Kim and Renée Mauborgne argue that cutthroat competition results in nothing but a bloody red ocean of rivals fighting over a shrinking profit pool. Based on a study of 150 strategic moves spanning more than a hundred years and thirty industries, the authors argue that lasting success comes not from battling competitors, but from creating “blue oceans”: untapped new market spaces ripe for growth. Such strategic moves—which the authors call “value innovation”—create powerful leaps in value that often render rivals obsolete for more than a decade. Blue Ocean Strategy presents a systematic approach to making the competition irrelevant and outlines principles and tools any company can use to create and capture blue oceans. A landmark work that upends traditional thinking about strategy, this book charts a bold new path to winning the future.

Question the status quo.......2007-09-25
The book forced me to rethink the way I normally would look at business developments for my companies: either value based or feature based. The idea of a creating new space in a crowded market and making a leap in growth through the blue ocean strategy stirred up my thinking juices. Personally, I don't like how to books with "three simple steps" This book was great; a must read.
Good Book.......2007-09-24
1. This is NOT a marketing book
2. There is no such thing as a fail safe strategy
3. This is a tool and is only as good as the user
4. Applicable in different situations
5. Good companion to Competitive Strategy written in the 80's by Mike Porter which is THE industry book
6. The book is NOT a pioneer and is NOT proported to be. It is a study in those companies who seemed to have created new markets such as Cirque De Soleil. The authors did NOT set out to create a new "theory" and then retroactively "fit" companies but rather study an emerging pheonom. and try to locate patterns.
I think that pretty much covers all the gripes of the previous entries. I first came across this book in a competitive strategy class in a business organizational change degree. It is an excellent text and gives another viewpoint to the old study of competitive strategy. I have used the strategy canvas tool located in chapter two AS A TOOL to assist me in both departmental and industry situations to locate existing patterns of competition.
Worth the money.
But then, I am just a "mere" academic (albeit with many years of industry experience) so if you truly do not like the book I suggest returning it. :)
What is your greatest challenge?.......2007-09-13
The greatest struggle for most business people is to come up with a truly original and valuable idea. Close behind that is how to get employees to work together. This book makes me want to cry, because it actually, simply, lays out how to do both. Beautiful.
Academics rarely demonstrate how to do it!.......2007-09-11
I bought this book. Their identifications are valid enough. Great companies have always created uncontested market space while making their competitors irrelevant. This is not in dispute. However...
The authors Chan Kim & Renee Mauborgne are just mere academics. And what is annoying is that they haven't battle tested their Blue Ocean model from hard knocks in the trenches business wars to find out what works and what doesn't for themselves! Again, this is what I find annoying with academics. They say a lot but never prove it themselves! Remember Merton & Scholes and LTCM?
For an example...in the book, the authors have an interesting strategic canvass graph approach that supposes to prove how Blue Ocean events come about. That's fine, but how do you prove it? Moreover, the 'values' are different for each company, so there is nothing consistent to glean from this.
What I'd like to have seen is a Dash Board type matrix template that allows any company or budding entrepreneur to carry out Blue Ocean due diligence on any industry or market niches...proofing these Blue Ocean catchments from a zero learning curve application! The book does have important points but lacks the cutting edge tools to unify Blue Ocean diligence and proofs for any company!
Thus, what this book lacks is a more honed processing of enquiry from the authors. And I suspect this to be the case because like many academics they haven't proven the unifying dynamics that goes into capturing Blue Ocean strategies for themselves with businesses they have built through their own mindset!
Again, this book is a case of 'do what I say, because I don't have to prove what I say'.
There are great industry shapers out there who can shift and move whole industries and markets in their favour...but the authors of this book are not one of them.
However, there are great positives the authors have identified. The book contains a very interesting 'Strategic Grid' technique. From this simple grid technique any one can mentally survey how to change one's industry or market from a macro-vantage point. But shifting and moving your new found Blue Ocean grid at a tactical level to rule your competition making them irrelevant is another matter entirely. The chapters that explain this grid are worth the book, but don't expect any thing else.
What you really want is a knowledge base that allows you to dig out Blue Ocean criteria from a template of enquiring tools STACKED PROCESS BY PROCESS UNTIL YOU PROOF YOUR OWN BLUE OCEAN POWER. This book fails on this!
I would suggest that any one buying this book should read 'Blue Print to a Billion by David Thomson to understand how real Blue Ocean executions are carried out correctly. In addition, Chet Holmes' Ultimate Sales Machine' gets you to understand how to carry out big frame strategies at the tactical level.
Both these books will plug the holes lacking with Kim & Mauborgne's work.
Blue Ocean Strategy.......2007-09-10
I like the non text book clear presentation. You do not have to have an MBA to enjoy and learn from this book.
Book Description
Kim Edwards's stunning family drama evokes the spirit of Sue Miller and Alice Sebold, articulating every mother's silent fear: what would happen if you lost your child and she grew up without you? In 1964, when a blizzard forces Dr. David Henry to deliver his own twins, he immediately recognizes that one of them has Down Syndrome and makes a split-second decision that will haunt all their lives forever. He asks his nurse to take the baby away to an institution and to keep her birth a secret. Instead, she disappears into another city to raise the child as her own. Compulsively readable and deeply moving, The Memory Keeper's Daughter is an astonishing tale of redemptive love. BACKCOVER: Edwards is a born novelist. . . . Rich with psychological detail and the nuances of human connection.
Chicago Tribune
Unfolds from an absolutely gripping premise, drawing you deeply and irrevocably into the entangled lives of two families and the devastating secret that shaped them both. I loved this riveting story.
Sue Monk Kidd
Anyone would be struck by the extraordinary power and sympathy of The Memory Keeper's Daughter.
The Washington Post
Kim Edwards has written a novel so mesmerizing that I devoured it. . . . The Memory Keeper's Daughter has it all.
Sena Jeter Naslund
Kim Edwards has created a tale of regret and redemption, of honest emotion, of characters haunted by their past. This is simply a beautiful book.
Jodi Picoult
Customer Reviews:
Really wanted to love this book but didn't even like it..........2007-10-09
I really wanted to love this book....after all, its a National Bestseller, on multiple critic's "must-read" list, on my Amazon recommendations list every time I check, and I have had more than a few people recommend it to me. Also, after reading the first thirty pages or so, I was riveted - such a unique and interesting plot....I though the rest of the book would be sensational. However, not only was I wrong and beyond disappointed, but I just can't understand the hype surrounding this book!
Once the plot is set-up within the first thirty pages or so, the book utterly failed to deliver and just tanked. The writing is boring, trite and the entire middle of the book is way too repetitive. Each paragraph I read felt like I had read it before...saying the same thing ten different times/ways does not make a book interesting. In fact, I had a hard time forcing myself to keep reading, but kept thinking about the fact that so many people liked this book so figured maybe the ending would somehow redeem it. It didn't. The book went downhill fast and never recovered, not even at the end. I DO NOT recommend this book at all!
A good concept, but fails in the delivery.......2007-10-09
I failed to connect with anything in this novel: not the plot, not the characters, not the writing style. It just didn't live up to the hype that seems to surround it. I think my biggest problem was with the author. Kim Edwards has "Lifetime Original Movie" scripts in her future, in my opinion. I found the story quite contrived and often cheesy. The reader KNOWS that the secret will be revealed at some point. Knowing what is coming just kills a book. I have a few ideas of how Edwards could have made this better, and they all involve some pretty major plot adjustments. I wish I felt SOMETHING (love, hate, whatever!) for the characters because I think that could have saved the story for me. I know I was supposed to care, to feel anger, resentment, frustration... I just didn't feel any of these things. So, unfortunately, I can't recommend this book, though I must say there is an audience for it. Several people in my bookclub found something personal that they could connect with in the book, and it clearly impacted their impression of it. Not sure why I didn't, but...it is what it is...
A Waste... .......2007-10-08
This novel was predictable, I had zero interest in the characters, and the writing was juvenile; I struggled to finish it. I would definitely not recommend this novel - what a waste of 400 pages.
contrite.......2007-10-05
i found the characters to be completely unrealistic. A mother who thinks that she lost one of her children at birth spends the rest of her life feeling empty. Her husband, albeit a good man, hides the secret (that their child is alive) from her his entire life. come on, you must be joking. i kept reading the book thinking that the characters would become more "real" but it didn't happen. and, it's a long book!
The husband was a good father to their son yet the sons spends his entire adolescent and adulthood hating the father. ridiculous! if, as in real life, the author would have simply let the boy go through what most adolescents do (disliking their parents) but then turning around in young adulthood, it would be so much more believable.
very disappointing.
Great book - couldn't put it down!.......2007-10-05
I really enjoyed this book, and found that I couldn't put it down. Edwards allows you to get really involved with the characters, and sympathise with all viewpoints. I would have one caveat: the subject matter was quite sad and depressing, and so I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who wants a happy and jolly read!

Customer Reviews:
Fantastic!.......2007-10-02
I love this series immensely. The characters are believable and fun. Kim Harrison knows how to write a story. I've love all of her previous books and this one is no different. The plot is intense. It's the kind of book you can't put down. I love how Rachel is portrayed. I look foward to the next ones!
OMGOSH! Amazing!.......2007-09-17
Everytime I think a book cant get any better i get shocked and this book was awesome!! I love Rachel although im a HUGE fan of IVEY! she rocks. I love how this book plays out i think its the best in the series so far!
She is getting better and better.......2007-09-17
Ms Harrison is getting better with each installation. Can't wait for her next book!. The addition of a "few more demons" was brilliant and diversified the storyline nicely.
For a Few Demons More.......2007-09-05
This entire series rocks!!! Pick them up and you can't put them down. The cast of characters are memorable and believable. I had given up on urban fantasy, Laurel K Hamilton will do that to you. (that's called fair warning folks)
However Kim Harrison saved the day. I have all the Rachel Morgan books and have my calender marked as to when I can get the next one coming out. The plots MOVE.. and in unexpected ways at times. While relationships are there, Ms. Harrison doesn't let it become the whole story (thank the goddess for that!)
This books are a must read for all urban fantasy fans!!
Highly Recomended.......2007-08-23
I think this book is the best in the series so far. It seems like Kim Harrison books just get better and better. I love this series and I'm waiting feverishly for the next one. If the rest of the books in her series are any indication, then the next book will be even better than this one. I really liked this book because of the brilliant mix of humor, horror, fantasy, and characters that are so well described I feel like I know them. I've never read an author who could shock me, scare me, then make me laugh out loud so many times in the same book. Trust me, this one is worth several all-nighters.

great reference book for flexibility.......2007-09-21
I am getting into martial arts at the age of 40. I have good flexability, but wanted more. This book will help you understand not only what stretch you are doing, but why. Excellent choice for beginner to advanced students.
The Book on Stretching .......2007-09-05
This book has helped me develop from a waist high kicker at best to a head high kicker within 6 months. The stretches and drills are invaluable then to top it off, the explanations and anatomical drawings are informative, but easy to understand. Not only is the information vital for you to know as a martial artist, but the author addresses different types of goals and how to set them and stick to them. Indispensable for the martial artist that wants to remain injury free and strong for many years.

Essential for evry type of sporting activity.......2007-07-20
A must have for participants of any sport. This book was so good that I gave a copy to a friend as a birthday gift. It gives detailed instructions for safe, effective, and most efficient stretching and flexibility. Pictures illustrate the actions very well, and the book explains not only the hows and whats, but the the whys of each exercise as well. exercises can be combined by groups of muscles, and by sport.
This is a very realistic approach that is sure to capture the interest and attention of anyone who desires a greater degree of flexibility than they now have, regardless of age.
I am 53 years old. I have used the methods in the book for a little over a year, and they have really worked well for me.

Topics covered include general and basic pathology, major concepts of disease processes, and systemic pathology surveying principal disorders of each organ system. A comprehensive examination at the end of the book contains 500 USMLE-format questions. USMLE questions have all been updated to current USMLE format. The text is written in outline format for effective review. Icons indicate high-yield information that correlates with key pathology concepts.
Customer Reviews:
Very complete.......2007-08-29
Concise material that covers all the bases. Good tables for quick recap, and Q & A's are good for studying when pressed for time.
My prime choice for Step 1.......2007-08-23
This is a great Step 1 review book. I used others as well, but after taking the exam, I can say that this was the most useful review book. I have Goljan Pathology as well, but this BRS is much more essential, and doesn't contain all the details needed for Step 2, so it is a good quick read with good practice quizzes and pretty much all the essential info you need, and you don't feel just overwhelmed after reading each chapter. It would've been nice if the authors added color illustrations to the text, and some figures in the quizzes were unclear. But overall buying this book was the best textbook investment I've made so far.
Loved this book.......2007-08-12
Alright, fine, I admit it --- I'm one of the med students who didn't like Goljan's Rapid Review Pathology book. After all, how can a 700-page book be considered a "rapid review"? This book is an excellent alternative! For Step 1, I used BRS Pathology exclusively. At a slender 400 pages, I was able to cover the entire book in-depth in a week, and it was just the right amount of information for the boards. The combination of BRS Path, First Aid, and doing practice questions is plenty for the pathology questions on the boards. I got my score report back last month and did very well --- and pathology was my strongest section. Good luck, and happy studying!
You must learn this book.......2007-08-02
I'm not sure what this other reviewer who claims the book is missing important details is talking about, because most of the stuff he mentions as left out of BRS Pathology, I am certain I learned from this book. This is the best book I ever read in medical school. It probably has a little bit too much detail for Step 1 (I took it in 2001), but damn, nearly everything in the book is fair game for the exam. True, there are some entries that leave you wondering, "how will I ever apply this esoteric fact or get asked a question on it?" But trust me, it is the highest yield book in all of medical school. Read this, and First Aid, and you will be set for about 70% of all questions on Step 1. If it wasn't for these two books, I would not be finishing up my radiology residency right now.
Bottomline: Buy it. Read it. Memorize it.
It's good but not excellent.......2007-06-08
This seems like a good book but it is missing a lot of essential information. I think it should be complemented by test taking.

Customer Reviews:
Boring to read, mediocre test questions, lowers confidence. .......2007-07-10
I started PMP study reading this book. It is almost as boring (and lengthy) to read as the PMBOK, endless repeats on what the inputs and outputs are. The test exams at the end of each chapter are frustrating - and the given answers often still leave you puzzled.
I changed to Rita Mulcahy's book - which was a MUCH easier read with a lot more practical and useful information. She also doesn't focus much on memorization, but understanding. The sample questions are very good and the answers give you a very good understanding.
After successfully passing mock exams, I tried the mock exam included on the CD with the KIM Heldman book. The questions were very lengthy and difficult to read (worse than the real PMP exam) and I didn't manage to get a good score on this mock exam - which was really bad for my confidence close to the exam. I decided to not look at it anymore and I passed the exam.
Good organization, beware of errors.......2006-11-17
I agree with the review by Albert, that there are numerous errors. The coverage mentioned in the title page of every chapter, leaves out some important topics covered within.
I would recommend this book to be read after attending a Instructor-led Training course, reading the PMBOK once, and reading Rita's book. Having such background will help to know the errors immediately.
On the positive side, this book is a good approach to organize the knowledge areas and process in a logical - real life order. The ongoing Kitchen Heaven Store project example provides a welcome break and a real-life manifestation of concepts.
Add to this, the sample exams and end of chapter summaries. I'll rate this 4-star and a good value for the money spent.
Too many errors, poor format, index lacking.......2006-08-14
I am studying for the PMP and have NOT sat for the test yet. I read this book (cover to cover), read the PMBOK-2005, and another book called 'PMP in Depth' (P. Sanghera).
I do not recommend the Sanghera book either (see my review on that book) but my comments on this book are this:
First, are the many blantant errors. Here are three examples of the many I found.
A) On page 191 it says "Interviewing" is not an official tool and technique of the Risk Identification process. This is not true (see PMBOK 11.2.2.2).
B)On page 254 it says that Activity Resource Estimating is an input to a process called "Human Activity Resource Estimating." This process does not exist in the PMBOK. The correct process is "Human Resource Planning." Further, this element is an input to two other processes not mentioned.
C) On page 263 it says Resource Limitations are NOT taken into consideration when conducting Schedule Network Analysis. The PMBOK (6.5.2.1) says that resource leveling is part of this tool and technique.
There are many other errors in this book (too numerous to mention here).
Second, the practice test questions are also riddled with errors. The danger in this kind of error is that the questions are tricky enough without putting the questions themselves into question.
Third, for me, the format of this book is not well suited to the way I learn (a personal point).
And fourth, the index is frustrating. Virtually all of the process inputs and outputs, and many of the tools & techniques, are missing -- it is structured for looking up process names.
On the positive side, I like the end of chapter summaries.
Best Reading to Pass PMP Exam.......2006-06-14
I bought and borrowed many books to study for the PMP exam and this was the BEST book, both in the material it covered and the way in which the material was presented. It is one of the few that take your through the project management process as you would really experience it, from project inception to closeout. Most other books geared toward the PMP exam organize the material based on the PMI knowledge areas, which have so much overlap it becomes confusing. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK. I passed the exam using this book and the quizes in Rita Mulcahy's PMP Exam Prep, which follows the knowlege areas.

The only thing you have to lose is your weight........2007-09-23
Based on the NBC hit show "The Biggest Loser," this colorful cookbook is a plus to anybody's library that is trying to lose weight or even just eat healthy. The promise of the book is that eating healthy can be quick and delicious AND it doesn't have to mean bland, tasteless food- and the book delivers.
Readers will find a short review of the Biggest Loser's way to lose weight- which is sensible- you eat right and exercise. Then comes the heart of the book- over 100 recipes for the various meals like breakfast, snacks, etc. And unlike a lot of cookbooks, each recipe shows you exactly how many calories, fat grams, protein grams, carb grams, fiber grams, sodium, and cholesterol it contains- which is nice for a wide variety of other populations such as those with diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease.
A sensible and practical cookbook, a lot of people will probably get their money's worth. Also recommend Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff if a shoulder problem keeps you from getting all the benefits of lifting weights.
Some really outstanding healthy recipes in here!.......2007-09-13
I really enjoy this cookbook. I'm not much for cooking, but there are recipes for every type of cook in here. I found some really easy ones that I love to make that even my husband enjoys! it's also very motivating to hear from others who have had struggles similar to my own. I'd definitely recommend this book for anyone who wants to live a healthy lifestyle!
A Good Buy.......2007-08-27
This book has a lot of great recipes and they're pretty basic. I use it to give me meal ideas, especially snacks and breakfast. Although a few of the recipes are very similar, it's still chalk full of delicious recipes, not to mention a little info on all the participants and some basics about the biggest loser eating plan. If you're on the fence, I say go for it.
Some good recipes in the book.......2007-07-27
You may have to acquire a taste for some of the recipes, but it worth the effort to at least try them.
Yum!.......2007-07-19
This is a great cookbook. It has pictures of most of the food, and nutrition facts for EVERYTHING. And the food is delicious. It also includes advice on exercise. The only problem I have--and it's a problem with all "healthy" cookbooks--is that it's hard to find SOME of the ingredients in your average grocery store. I have only had a problem with one or two recipes, and I am sure a trip to a health food store would prove successful, but I am just talking about convenience. Overall, though, I have to say BUY IT.

Ok for a text book, but there are better books out there.......2007-08-03
This was a required text for a MBA management class I was taking. While I enjoyed the class, the book itself was disappointing, and even the authors point out that many of the surveys and self-analysis tools are limited because the better tools are all proprietary. Most of the book is a re-hash of standard managment philosophy, with some statistical justification thrown in.
If you are looking to improve your management skills, I recommend going straight to the primary sources, which includes most of Stephen Covey's books, along with other management and self-improvement books like Emotional Intelligence, Execution, One-Minute Manager, etc. This book tries to cover the same ground, but ends up being far less informative or interesting then the popular management books it emulates.

Was delivered promptly in mint condition and at the best price available!
Great Product/Price.......2007-05-17
Great Product and Price. Good Shipping. Great book for aspiring managers. Looks at Management as a social science. Great concepts and processes built into the book to guide you on what you need to improve on.
Perfect.......2007-03-09
This is a fantastic book. Every Management Trainee or person should read this book.
it is a nice book.......2005-09-27

Book Description
Cross Over Troubled Waters
Hope is like the starsâalways there, yet shining brightest in the blackest of nights. It is like the dawn, always rising anew. Hope is for everyone, and that includes you. This collection of more than twenty true stories from a ranch of rescued dreams unveils the heart of true strength and the character of genuine courage. Experience for yourself the kind of love and hope that change a person from the inside out. Because sometimes, just believing in someone is enough for them to start believing in themselves. It’s the galvanizing truth that no matter how deep your painâ¦God’s love exceeds it still.
Sometimes, just believing in someone
is enough for them to start
believing in themselvesâ¦
Without raising his eyes to look at me, in a voice barely clearing the horizon of a whisper, he said, âI know you don’t love me⦠You just say that ’cuz you’re an adult and it’s kinda like your job. But I know you don’t really love me.â
Suffering and blessing balance on the same high wire, each giving stability and depth to the other. The one that we feel the mostâ¦is ultimately the one that we give the most.
It was her eyes that gave her away. The conflict of her mortal illness versus her will raged behind them. Her body shouted, âI’m sick and it’s getting harder and harder to do the things I love!â while her indomitable will shouted back, âYeah, but I’m just a little kid, and little kids should get to ride horses!â
What a relief it is when we begin to understand that it is within our hardships that truth is elevated from our hearts to our heads.
âDuring the darkest days I’d ever known, I was introduced to the unconditional love of a little horse and a merciful God, and my life has never been the same,â says author Kim Meeder . And her book proves that hope is not only for us to keepâ¦but to give.
âStirring, encouraging, and inspirational, Bridge Called Hope reminds us that hope is heaven sent for everyone, and that we, too, can make a positive difference in others’ lives."
Eric Close
Actor
âKim Meeder vibrantly sharesâand livesâan amazing story of hope and restoration. A triumph of recovery for wounded hearts!â

Story Behind the Book
âI was moved to write Hope Rising and Bridge Called Hope because, when I needed it the most, someone shared hope with me and it saved my life. During the darkest days I’d ever known, I was introduced to the unconditional love of a little horse and a merciful God, and my life has never been the same. Everything in our life is about choices. We cannot control our circumstances, but we can control how we choose to feel about them. The pain that we feel in this life is certain. What is equally certain is how we choose to feel about the pain. It can destroy usâor it can define us. The choice is uniquely ours.â âKim Meeder

As beautiful as the first! .......2007-09-19
Most sequels don't measure up to the first book, but this one is a rarity. It is as well written and beautiful as the its predecessor. I hope it's not the end of the author's writen journey.
Wonderful inspiration.......2007-09-04
This book was much like Kim's first book - "Hope Rising". Full of wonderful stories about the many horses and children who have spent time at the Crystal Peaks Youth Ranch and because of their time there, have come away with new hope about life itself. Great reading!
Keep your tissues handy.......2007-08-26
Kims stories of abused children will bring a tear to almost anyones eyes. Her writing paints a vivid image in your head, as if you are there yourself. But this is not merely a book about unwanted and abused children. It's a story of how one couple takes God's message of hope to ones who have none.
Bridge Called Hope.......2007-08-23
This was a beautiful story with and important message of reaching those who feel they are without hope in this world. the title is very appropriate and the message is one that is greatly needed in our world today. There is hope!
Hope Rising.......2007-08-19
Second book by this author that offers true, inspiring, heart-tugging stories how horses and children that need mending from abuse or other physical/mental issues help pull each other through to a path of healing; and the husband and wife team that makes it all happen through faith.
