Book Description

IN combating terror, America can no longer depend on its conventional military superiority and the use of sophisticated technology. We are fighting guerrilla wars, against insurgents hidden in remote regions, often deep among the local population. In battles such as these, squadrons of billion-dollar bombers and naval fleets mean much less than on-the-ground intelligence and the ability to organize local forces. That’s why, more than ever before, we need men like those of the Army Special Forces—the legendary Green Berets.
In Chosen Soldier, Dick Couch—a former Navy SEAL widely admired for his books about SEAL training and operations—offers an unprecedented view of the training of the Army Special Forces warrior. Each year, several thousand enlisted men and several hundred officers volunteer for Special Forces training; less than a quarter of those who apply will complete the course. Chosen Soldier spells out in fascinating detail the arduous regimen these men undergo—the demanding selection process and grueling field exercises, the high-level technical training and intensive language courses, and the simulated battle problems that test everything from how well they gather operational intelligence to their skills at negotiating with volatile, often hostile, local leaders.
Green Berets are expected to be deadly in combat, yes, but their responsibilities go far beyond those of other Special Operations fighters; they’re taught to operate in foreign cultures, often behind enemy lines; to recruit, train, and lead local forces; to gather intelligence in hostile territory; to forge bonds across languages and cultures. They must not only be experts in such fields as explosives, communications, engineering, and field medicine, but also be able to teach those skills to others. Each and every Green Beret must function as tactical combat leader, negotiator, teacher, drill sergeant, and diplomat.
These tasks require more than just physical prowess; they require a unique mix of character, intelligence, language skills, and—most of all—adaptability. It’s no wonder that the Green Berets’ training regimen is known as the hardest in the world. Drawing on his unprecedented access to the closed world of Army Special Forces training, Dick Couch paints a vivid, intimate portrait of these extraordinary men and the process that forges America’s smartest, most versatile, and most valuable fighting force.

Very well written and hard to put down. An excellent insight into SF traing from beginning to end. I've seen many books on the subject of SF traing but none as complete as this one. WOW, brings back a lot of memories! This is a MUST READ for anyone thinking of going SF.
Great job Mr. Couch!

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-08-31

This book is great! Of course, I am partial since it is from my son's training and all those with him. I believe anyone interested in finding out just what a special type of man it takes to become a Green Beret, you will thoroughly enjoy it. Throughout this book the author made it possible for me to go through each part of his training and feel even more proud of not only him, but all the men that would dedicate themselves to such unbelievable physical and mental training, dedication, and tasks to learn and become one of the strongest, smartest, educated and trained special forces for our country and for our freedom.

5 out of 5 stars book review.......2007-08-23

One of the most interesting books about soldiers I've ever read - it certainly sheds quite a different light on SF training and the quality of our people.

4 out of 5 stars Good book, but needs a step back?.......2007-08-14

No question Couch does a great job explaining the incredible training and selection of SF soldiers. He knows the ground and covers it well. But, the role of SF seems to have changed, and could be viewed with some thoughtful questions. Has the SF mission been changed and more emphasis placed on their being small scale Ranger units or substitute CIA para-military units? Has the Blackwater thought process taken over? The SF I knew was "the best and the brightest". True warriors who knew that sometimes having to shoot it out was the first sign of a failed mission. I'd love to see Couch explore what the role of these heros has evolved into.

4 out of 5 stars Great book, explains the challenges an SF canidate must endure........2007-08-05

Overall great read! As an american soldier with a significant time in service, both stateside and overseas, I found this book to be very informative and motivating. It shares with the reader all phases that an SF canidate must endure to earn the sacred Special Forces tab and be able to call himself a special operator. I have been considering a life in SF and I think this book might have pushed me over the edge and motivated me enough to try out. As I said before, great read and very well written.

Few stories offer more warmth, wisdom, or generosity than this tale of two boys, their fathers, their friendship, and the chaotic times in which they live. Though on the surface it explores religious faith--the intellectually committed as well as the passionately observant--the struggles addressed in The Chosen are familiar to families of all faiths and in all nations.

In 1940s Brooklyn, New York, an accident throws Reuven Malther and Danny Saunders together. Despite their differences (Reuven is a Modern Orthodox Jew with an intellectual, Zionist father; Danny is the brilliant son and rightful heir to a Hasidic rebbe), the young men form a deep, if unlikely, friendship. Together they negotiate adolescence, family conflicts, the crisis of faith engendered when Holocaust stories begin to emerge in the U.S., loss, love, and the journey to adulthood. The intellectual and spiritual clashes between fathers, between each son and his own father, and between the two young men, provide a unique backdrop for this exploration of fathers, sons, faith, loyalty, and, ultimately, the power of love. (This is not a conventional children's book, although it will move any wise child age 12 or older, and often appears on summer reading lists for high school students.)

Book Description

"Anyone who finds it is finding a jewel. Its themes are profound and universal."
THE WALL STREET JOURNAL
It is the now-classic story of two fathers and two sons and the pressures on all of them to pursue the religion they share in the way that is best suited to each. And as the boys grow into young men, they discover in the other a lost spiritual brother, and a link to an unexplored world that neither had ever considered before. In effect, they exchange places, and find the peace that neither will ever retreat from again....

I like the guy's voice, but he reads slowly, and my students preferred to read aloud so they could "get done."

5 out of 5 stars Better with re-reading.......2007-07-12

I first read this book as a teenager, and have re-read it numerous times since. I'm now in my mid-40's. As a teen, it opened my eyes to a world most of us never encounter - Jewish Brooklyn, the sphere of the Hasids, Talmudic study. As I've aged my enjoyment of the book has matured. These days, it's particularly interesting in light of Mid East politics and the controversy surrounding the founding of the State of Israel. Through all these years, though, the relationships between the boys and their fathers remains as touching, as profound as they were upon first reading. I cried the first few times I read this book. I still re-read certain passages just for the emotional "oomph".

A tremendous, powerful book that bears up well for a lifetime's enjoyment.

5 out of 5 stars Love it.......2007-05-12

I remember having to read this in High School for a 6 weeks book report. I loved it so much I read it at least 4 times cover to cover, but I think it was actually 6 times. I can't wait to get hold of it now, almost 20 years later and read it again.

5 out of 5 stars The Chosen By Chaim Potok.......2007-04-13

This book was sensational it was a book that made you laugh and cry. it was the kind of book that made you wish you were there and stop all the wrong doing. Anyone who likes baseball or Softball should like this book

2 out of 5 stars So boring..........2007-03-23

I have heard for years how good this book is. It never looked particularly interesting to me personally, so I put it off and put it off. I finally got around to picking up a copy, and was pleasantly surprised for the first 75 pages or so. It did engage me. And then...what I expected: the author began to describe the tedious nuances of the slightly-different faiths in excruciating detail. I just didn't care. I found myself skipping whole paragraphs hoping to get back to the storyline. Eventually, I just threw in the towel. Judging from all the positive reviews here on Amazon, and from friends and coworkers, I trust that there is something worthwhile here. Unfortunately, I couldn't find it. So, take the advice that makes sense for you. You know yourself better than most, right? I should have trusted my own instincts. But, sometimes we're wrong, right? Might be worth picking up at the library first. If you can make it to the end, more power to you...

If you own only one anthology of classic science fiction, it should be The Science Fiction Hall of Fame: Volume One, 1929-1964. Selected by a vote of the membership of the Science Fiction Writers of America (SFWA), these 26 reprints represent the best, most important, and most influential stories and authors in the field. The contributors are a Who's Who of classic SF, with every Golden Age giant included: Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, Arthur C. Clarke, John W. Campbell, Robert A. Heinlein, Fritz Leiber, Cordwainer Smith, Theodore Sturgeon, and Roger Zelazny. Other contributors are less well known outside the core SF readership. Three of the contributors are famous for one story--but what stories!--Tom Godwin's pivotal hard-SF tale, "The Cold Equations"; Jerome Bixby's "It's a Good Life" (made only more infamous by the chilling Twilight Zone adaptation); and Daniel Keyes's "Flowers for Algernon" (brought to mainstream fame by the movie adaptation, Charly).

The collection has some minor but frustrating flaws. There are no contributor biographies, which is bad enough when the author is a giant; but it's especially sad for contributors who have become unjustly obscure. Each story's original publication date is in small print at the bottom of the first page. And neither this fine print nor the copyright page identifies the magazines in which the stories first appeared.

Prefaced by editor Robert Silverberg's introduction, which describes SFWA and details the selection process, The Science Fiction Hall of Fame: Volume One, 1929-1964 is a wonderful book for the budding SF fan. Experienced SF readers should compare the table of contents to their library before making a purchase decision. Fans who contemplate giving this book to non-SF readers should bear in mind that, while several of the collected stories can measure up to classic mainstream literary stories, the less literarily-acceptable stories are weighted toward the front of the collection; adult mainstream-literature fans may not get very far into The Science Fiction Hall of Fame: Volume One, 1929-1964. --Cynthia Ward

I've purchased this book in paperback and hardcover many times over because I keep giving copies away. This is an indespensible introduction to the art of writing short fiction, sci-fi style. Character studies, logic puzzles, future societies, deaths of civilizations, it's all in here. Emphatically recommended.

Every story is a winner and each serves as a jumping off point to explore the author's further work. Of all the SF anthologies, this is the best and is an essential part of any SF fan's library.

Most of the stories in hear are fantastic. The intro also includes a listing of the 20 best voted scifi short stories, which I found myself refering to to see if I could relate to the 'experts' opinions. There are a few stinkers in the bunch, which I'm sure is inevitable, but probably not as many as you'd find as in other collections.

Neal Barker’s grandfather was the first Prophet Jericho, and Neal now rules the Temple of Light commune unchecked. But soon Dare will discover just how far he’ll go to protect Lyra—and never let her go.

4 out of 5 stars Loved the action, loved the romance, loved the storyline! Great start to a new series!.......2007-07-13

I love the author and her "Magic" series. I normally read the paranormal romances and was nervous picking up this book. Honestly I didn't buy this book at first, after seeing that the male character was named Dare I was worried. I was like his name is, Dare? But I'am so glad that I bought this book. This book was fast paced and sexy. The story line was great! It had me turning the pages so fast I finished the book in a day. Crazy huh!

I felt for Lyra and her mom. The cult in this book is scarey and believable. Lyra being a 23 year old virgin was even believable, oddly enough. Dare was such a hunk and what a sweetie!! I thought this was a great read!!!

5 out of 5 stars Chosen Prey .......2007-07-12

After Lyra Collin's father was killed when she was thirteen in a police bust gone bad, her mother was talked into joining a cult called The Temple of Light by its Prophet, Neil Barker. For three years Lyra lived in fear of the day she turned eighteen and would be forced to become one of Neil's wives. Lyra escaped before she could be forced into a farce of a marriage and has been on the run now for five years from the cult.

Being a private investigator has been the main focus of Dare Lancaster's life since he left the police force after the death of his partner. Taking the job of finding Lyra Collins ended up being a lot more than he expected. Protecting Lyra from the Temple of Light was now his responsibility since they found her because of him. There was another danger to him, though. He could very well lose his life along with his heart to this strong, yet fragile woman.

Cheyenne McCray is one of my favorite authors. One of the reasons why is that she spins a tale so vividly that I always feel as if I'm right there, living the story along with the characters. Chosen Prey lured me in so deeply that I could feel the pain that Lyra experiences. I did like both Lyra and Dare, loved Nick and loved to hate Neil, Mark and Adam. Both the story and the characterization are rich in detail and emotion. The only problem that I had with Chosen Prey was that during the five years that Lyra was on the run, she never truly learned how to defend herself against being taken, though I do have to say she did learn how to disappear and hide extremely well.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-06-13

This is a hot sensual romantic suspense and it stands up to all those words. I enjoyed the book and will eagerly look forward to more of this type by Ms. McCray.

Lyra Collins escaped from a cult when she was 18 and has been hiding ever since. She is a talented artist and has survived the last five yrs by selling her art. Life has not been easy but just when she at last thinks she is safe Dare Lancaster finds her.

Dare Lancaster is a Private Investigator hired by a member of the cult to find the artist who is producing a certain type of art. Dare has been a police officer before he turned rancher and sometime PI. He and his partner run a security agency.

Unknown to him he is followed to Lyra's house and she meets him with pepper spray and a firmly slammed door. When he is leaving he sees several men with peculiar hair and clothes who pull up to her door. They rush out surrounding the house and Dare realizes something is definitely not right. Wiping pepper spray out of his eyes he jumps into the fray and manages to rescue Lyra, quickly taking her to a safe place.

When time allows Lyra tells him about the cult and it's leader Neal Barker who has made a prophecy that Lyra will bare the new Messiah. She is to become his No. 1 wife and concieve the next leader of the cult.

The romance is hot, the action is non-stop and the story is fasinating. I loved it. If you like alot of heat in your romances this one is for you.

4 out of 5 stars Not Bad--Good Suspence and Worthy Characters.......2007-06-03

Lyra Collins has been on the run since she was a teenager. Having found what she thought was a safe haven in Bisbee, Arizona, she lets her guard down one too many times. The relentless people of the Temple of Light have found her and its time to run again. An unwilling participant in a sordid prophecy, Lyra refuses to bow to the cult prophet's delusional desires. The cult members bring determined to all an all-new, dangerous level though and they will do anything to recapture her.

Former cop turned private investigator Dare Lancaster never meant for the alluring young woman to come to harm. When he leads to bad guys straight to her door though, he vows to set his mistakes to rights. The fact that he can't resist her sweet body and devilish charm sweetens the desire to help her as well. He's better at protecting than he is at detecting in this instance and he sets out to take down the cult that wants to harm Lyra. Using his previous skills as a cop, he forms a rigid defense around the unconventional little beauty and an even hotter, sensual one around her heart. When the cult comes calling again though, he'll have to pull out all the stops in order to keep the cult's leader from seeing his evil plans through.

Chosen Prey is rife with bold, desperate sensuality, fueled by the precarious situation Lyra and Dare find themselves in. Though neither has met before, each knows there is something primal between them. McCray writes their story with a passion fueled suspense that starts with action and ends with even more heart tripping action by the end. It's a fast paced read that is suspenseful and hits the mark wonderfully with regards to Lyra's characterization. My one regret is that Dare is not as equally fleshed out, but what we do get of him is hot and certainly left me admiring his bold pursuit of Lyra as well as his determination to see her rid of the Temple's shadow. The details of their environments, from Bisbee to the stark conditions of the Temple's compound, are wonderful enough to give the reader a clear impression from beginning to end. As an intro for me to what MCCray can do with romantic suspense, I came away pretty pleased and look forward to reading more such romance from her.

5 out of 5 stars Great New Series.......2007-05-12

Cheyenne has done it again with a pulse pounding, heart stoping new series. It gets you hooked from the first 10 pages and keeps you reading. I got so into it that I felt what they characters felt. A great romantic suspense.

When a spring thaw disinters the body of a young woman who's been missing for over a year, Minneapolis detective Lucas Davenport doesn't have much to go on except the victim's rumored connection with an unnamed man, who may be an artist and also, perhaps, a priest. But then the deserted property where her body was discovered turns out to be a killing field full of other young blondes last seen in the company of a man with a nasty habit of superimposing their faces on pornographic drawings. Davenport begins to close in on a serial killer whose perverted hobby provides the clues Davenport needs to stop him in his bloody tracks. James Qatar isn't a priest, and he's not really an artist, but he's definitely a monster, one who's met his match in Davenport.

Davenport is a smart, thoughtful cop whose girlfriend is pressuring him to make a commitment to parenthood and whose boss is about to lose her job in a political turnover. While the search for the killer is handled in author John Sandford's usual, crisp, procedural style, it almost seems to be a pretext for exploring the evolution of Davenport's relationship with Dr. Weather Karkinnen. This 12th adventure in the author's popular Prey series will undoubtedly rocket to the top of the bestseller list, though it's not a standout. The novel displays the solid craftsmanship and narrative drive Sandford's known for, but his hero seems a little dispirited and out of sorts. Perhaps fatherhood will give Davenport a new lease on life. In the meantime, check out Sandford's backlist featuring his other hero, Kidd (The Fool's Run, The Empress File, The Devil's Code), who has a nice little walk-on here in which he begins a romance with Davenport's partner Marcy Sherrill. --Jane Adams

Book Description

A killer has some serious cleaning up to do to keep from getting caught--and Davenport's detection skills make him number one on his hit list.

4 out of 5 stars Fast Paced Story.......2007-09-11

I enjoyed this fast paced story and I am a big fan of Lucas Davenport. I missed this book in the Prey novels, so I'm doing a little catch up. I found I got to visit with the usual characters and a few new characters. I thought that the characters were described extremely well and the plot kept me guessing throughout the book. This book is a real thriller and I always look forward to Mr. Sandford's new books. Highly recommend.

4 out of 5 stars what a book...........2007-08-06

What a book,Its a lot of reading(of course I dont get much time to read). But the book was very suspencefull and lots of mystery. Why didnt I rate it a 5 star Book? I didnt like it when james Quarter went and killed his own mother,I thought that was very morbid and a terrible thing to have done. This Book however saves the who done it to very, very end. So don,t read the last page before reading this Book. Its not a bad book,But certianly not the best book Ive Read....

5 out of 5 stars Nobody does it better.......2006-03-30

Sandford is our generation's master of the crime novel. Read one of the Prey novels, you'll want to read them all. Lucas Davenport is a beautifully flawed good guy with a streak of badness about him. Sandford weaves his stories flawlessly and hauls you along like a fish on a line until the very last page.
-- Mark LaFlamme, author of "The Pink Room."

4 out of 5 stars Short book, fast pace, good writing.......2006-02-24

I've always liked John Sandford's books because they are always to the point. Nothing comes closer to this description of his writing than Chosen Prey.

The short length of the book allows you to finish it in a matter of hours. The pace is relentless and the writing so absolutely witty. Sandford has a good ear for dialogue; the characters just speak as if you were hearing them up close and personal.

Sandford manages to write about people with which the reader can sympathize, or at the very least, empathize.

The story is about a full-time college art professor and part-time serial killer who photographs women and superimposes them on pornographic images taken from the net. It also tells of the cops who try to figure out his transgressions.

There is nothing difficult to read in this book. The plot itself is current and manages to hold your interest. While it is by no means unique, the reader can appreciate that Sandford's twists in the standard plotline (affable serial killer) is enough to make the reader appreciate it as making it Sandford's own.

There is never a dull moment in this book and if you're stuck in an airport somewhere waiting for a delayed flight, I suggest you look this book up. You'll be satisfied that you did.

4 out of 5 stars A fast, slightly flawed read........2005-08-17

One thing that holds true about many of the PREY novels is this: if people like the villain truly exist...be afraid. This time Lucas is matched up with a sex-addicted serial killer/artist who literally gets off on the kill. James Qatar is brutal and calculating, and seemingly uncatchable for the longest time.

This is a fast read, both due to the fast pace and the relatively short length. The glaring problem to me is the same problem that has appeared in every PREY novel. Profanity is necessary. I understand that, but the constant use of "GD" is over the top. It's excessive and really takes away from the reading experience after a while.

Otherwise, a great read.

4 out of 5 stars An easy, fun read that made me LOL a few times.......2007-06-21

Sure, it's not a masterpiece of literature, but it was a quick, cute read that made me chuckle pretty frequently. I disagree with the person below who said the writers are ashamed of being Jewish. Nah, not true at all. They just have a sense of humor about certain aspects of their religion and spirituality. I received this book as a gift from a friend, and I would recommend it to other Jews who are proud of their faith, but also don't take it so seriously that they can't have a giggle at their own expense once in a while.

5 out of 5 stars very funny.......2007-05-30

This is a very funny book about self-stereotypes of american jews. The conversations of the authors with their mothers were probably the funniest.

1 out of 5 stars Oy, such drek!!!.......2007-05-08

I was thrilled to stumble across this book, because I'd loved the play. (I even bought the hat!) I'm glad my stumble happened in the library and not the bookstore, because this oversized doorstop turned out to be an incredible disappointment. "Stumble" is actually a good word for it.

The book is similar in style and tone to the "America" book from the Daily Show, but unlike that book, it's just not funny. Not. Funny. The humor is almost entirely random and juvenile, and never rises above a sort of "snicker, snicker, wasn't that a clever play on Jewish stereotypes?" level. Sure, the authors are clever guys, but clever has to be used in the service of funny to make me laugh. No such luck here, bubeleh.

I slogged through as much of the book as I could (I even made it past the half-dozen brutally tired Bush/ Cheney jokes around page 3, which was no small feat), hoping in vain that it would get better. I figured that the guys who put together such a hysterical piece of live theater would come up with something even a fraction as good in the book -- they just *had* to -- but I never managed more than a weak smile.

"Chosen Book for the Chosen People?" It's about as good a choice as choosing to take up smoking.

5 out of 5 stars Jewtopia: The Chosen Book for the Chosen People.......2007-03-15

Great, fun book. I will buy more as gifts.

5 out of 5 stars A book even a Swedish girl can love! .......2007-03-08

I bought this book for my Jewish boyfriend as a present -- what I didn't realize is that I would end up reading it cover to cover before I gave it to him! This book is incredibly funny -- the illustrations are amazing and it is a great read! I highly recommend this book to anyone who is in need of a great laugh!

Campbell Jr., Lester del Rey, Robert A. Heinlein, C. M. Kornbluth, Henry Kuttner and C. L. Moore, Eric Frank Russell, Cordwainer Smith, Theodore Sturgeon, H. G. Wells, and Jack Williamson.

4 out of 5 stars A fine collection of stories.......2007-03-22

This is another great introduction to science fiction for the "non sci-fi fan." This compilation (as noted in the title) features novellas rather than short stories, so the "commitment" to dive into these stories is a bit more of a factor than something Volume One (of the same series title). Be that as it may, the stories you will find here are highly intriguing and quickly draw you into the drama of their world, which is really your world just a little down the road. "Who Goes There" is on of the more popular titles of this collection, but far from the ONLY story here that will capture your interest. Each of these are stories you can read several times over, and still get goosebumps. This is a great collection bound up in one volume, carefully assembled by an expert editor, who knows to let the stories tell themselves without any excess interference.

3 out of 5 stars A decent anthology.......2007-01-05

Not particularly noteworthy, but nonetheless a good addition to one's scifi library, especially one lacking any other series of anthologies.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for SF fans........2006-06-11

This anthology includes my personal favorites: The tale of a dumbed down society in "The Marching Morons" by C.M. Kornbluth, and "Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell, Jr. "Who Goes There" is beyond excellent ~ I still get nightmares ~ and was the basis for both films titled "The Thing." Isaac Asimov opines in his biography "I, Asimov" that "Who Goes There?" is the finest science fiction story ever written. I tend to agree.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Stories.......2005-10-05

I read this book many years ago and to this day several of the short stories stick in my mind. So when looking for a good book for my wife to read, I thought this was the perfect choice. Unfortunately, I didn't have a copy. So I was overjoyed to see this book being reprinted and eagerly ordered a copy.

Look for "Who Goes There" which is the short story the movie "Thing" was based upon.

5 out of 5 stars Landmarks of Science Fiction.......2005-01-21

You'd never guess from looking at the bookstore shelves today, but collections of short works like these used to be the mainstay of science fiction. Tor Books deserves kudos for bringing this collection of classic novellas from sf's Golden Age back into print, and in hardcover, too, with Volume 2B presumably still to come.

The novella, longer than a short story, shorter than a full novel, is the ideal length for science fiction, providing enough room for an author to present an idea and work through all its implications, without the padding that often seems obligatory for marketing purposes today.

This book includes key works by some of the field's biggest names from the 1940s and 50s. Most will probably be new to anyone who started reading science fiction after the 1980s, including Campbell's "Who Goes There", filmed twice as "The Thing" but much creepier in print, and Lester del Rey's "Nerves", which pre-dated Three Mile Island and Chernobyl by decades.

While the science may have dated, these are still terrific stories.

In this engrossing adult fantasy tale, the fascinating Phèdre nó Delaunay fights to save her queen and country in a battle whose greatest weapon proves to be Phèdre herself. This sequel to Carey's accomplished debut novel, Kushiel's Dart, finds Phèdre, now Comtesse de Montrève, once again plying her skills as an anguissette--a courtesan for whom pain becomes pleasure--and her talents as a spy. She uncovers a conspiracy of treason and murder and begins an adventure that takes her once more to distant lands in the company of an intriguing cast of characters--and a new confrontation with her old enemy, Melisande Shahrizai.

There's some evidence of haste in this novel: the writing is not always as tight and controlled as it was in Kushiel's Dart. Nevertheless, Carey's fans will certainly enjoy this return to Terre d'Ange, and those new to her work will find a satisfying combination of fantasy, sex, and adventure, as well as a smart and engaging heroine. --Roz Genessee

Book Description

Mighty Kushiel, of rod and wealLate of the brazen portalsWith blood-tipp'd dart a wound unhealedPricks the eyen of chosen mortalsThe land of Terre d'Ange is a place of unsurpassed beauty and grace. The inhabiting race rose from the seed of angels and men, and they live by one simple rule: Love as thou wilt.Phegrave;dre noacute; Delaunay was sold into indentured servitude as a child. Her bond was purchased by a nobleman, the first to recognize that she is one pricked by Kushiel's Dart, chosen to forever experience pain and pleasure as one. He trained Phegrave;dre in the courtly arts and the talents of the bedchamber--and, above all, the ability to observe, remember, and analyze. When she stumbled upon a plot that threatened the very foundations of her homeland, she gave up almost everything she held dear to save it. She survived, and lived to have others tell her story, and if they embellished the tale with fabric of mythical splendor, they weren't far off the mark. The hands of the gods weigh heavily upon Phegrave;dre's brow, and they are not finished with her. While the young queen who sits upon the throne is well loved by the people, there are those who believe another should wear the crown.... and those who escaped the wrath of the mighty are not yet done with their schemes for power and revenge.

5 out of 5 stars A Heroine that commands armies and the hearts of those who love her........2007-08-07

I couldn't believe I read 912 pages in a few days! The power & imaginative writing is nothing short of incredible as Ms. Carey weaves a tale that includes everything from light S&M to love, respect, passion & obsession to murder, torture, hatred and deception. The action is written so clearly that even when many duels and hand to hand are being fought, it was easily followed. The description of the places she has travelled is excellent as are the interesting people she meets. She is constantly portrayed and called a [...], a [...] spy, a pain-bearer, but in the end she wins the hearts and souls of all and they find in her an ally, friend, lover bar none. And then there is Joscelin....the man who has her heart. I am so glad I found this series.

LOL.... I LOVE THE IMAGINATION AND THE FACT IT IS WRITTEN SO... FOR ME TO SEE THROUGH A WOMENS EYES IS VERY INTERESTING... I LOVE HER FIRST BOOK AND I HAVE FRIENDS WANTING TO BORROW THIS BOOK, "I TOLD THEM TO GET THEIR OWN!"

4 out of 5 stars Good adventure fantasy.......2006-10-11

"Chosen" continues the adventures and political intrigues of one of the most unusual characters I've seen as star in a fantasy story.

The story itself is good, workmanlike, and sustained (i.e. long) adventure. Phedre, the heroine, knows of a plot against the queen, and gives up her life of relative ease and comfort to hunt the traitor down. She succeeds, and that's where the adventure really begins: to an island prison where people are sent to be forgotten, into a stormy sea, off with the pirates, into the cave of sacred torment and wisdom, and more. It's right down to the wire, but Phedre succeeds in the end. She's no fighter herself, but is always surrounded by soldiers or armed adventurers, and usually in charge of the band.

Phedre herself is a striking character. Some god-given quirk of genes has given her a magical ability to heal from wounds, and an equally magical short-circuit between her senses of pain and pleasure - leaving her with urges that give plenty to heal from. Maybe they're god-given talents, but it wasn't a very nice god. Also, Phedre is a priestess in a cult that holds the body to be a temple, and it's the priestess's holy duty to encourage active kinds of worship at that temple. For all its steamy potential, the author describes only one passage of Phedre's carnal devotions. Given that pain thing, one is all I wanted.

If you have a long trip coming up, this book's 600+ pages of thud factor will keep you amused for at least a few hundred miles. I've read better, but this one was good enough to keep me interested in Phedre and her adventures

//wiredweird

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful sequel!.......2006-10-03

Once again, Carey delights with this new addition to her Kushiel series.

Phedre is once again discovers a web of trechery that could lead to the fall of her country, and her Queen. Pitted against old foes, aided by her ever constant Joscelin, a man who broke all his vows to aid her, Phedre once again saves all she holds dear.

A brilliant continuation of this gripping saga.

5 out of 5 stars Good though not as good as the first.......2006-09-18

The first book was brilliant one of my favourite ever and most likely if it never existed this book would be a 4. Its still a good book but when its the continuation of the story of phedre and josceline it becomes a must read.

Plot - Phedre finds out melisande is in la sessimistra and starts playing her game again to find her. Lots of travelling happens josceline and her fight alot much the same as the first book.

I find where this book lacks is in the 2nd half where it just seems there is a lot of filler, you can see the ending coming half way through the book and then suddenly it detours and phedre just seems to be filling in time far from the action till the exciting stuff begins again. In contrast kushiels dart was a constant roller coaster till the very end.

I havent mentioned much of the positives here but hopefully you have read kushiels dart and that should tell you what to expect here, rest assured 'chosen' is very well written and enjoyable to read just not the perfect book the first one was.

In the end i give it 4 and a half stars, a well made continuation but no classic like the first. Reading the third soon, ive heard i wont be dissapointed.

I was interested in being a special agent with the FBI before reading this book and after reading it I am even more interested. This book was very good at explaining the application process for the FBI. Also gave info on a wide range of topics from the history of the FBI, to what an agent does. Anyone interested in a career as a special agent should read this for guidance and valuable insight on this career. It was very helpful to me and can help you out as well.

I had been considering single motherhood and got this to understand what I might have been getting myself into. It was difficult enough trying to read a worldly perspective on a serious matter without the author bending over backward trying to justify her own decision. She really needs to get her heart right with God. She even went as far as finding some very questionable study that claimed single mothers had less stress than those in a married relationship. After reading that, I was unable to read the book again. It's that biased and ridiculously not a fair evaluation of single motherhood. And while the author does include unstable women involved in multiple and/or serial-"monogomous" relationships within the book, I don't see that as healthy or beneficial to anyone - mother, child, or the men. If that's what membership into Single Mothers by Choice is like, I really don't want a part of it. Buyer be warned!

this book is written by the founder of single mothers by chiolce. it covers all the topics that would cross your mind in the adoption process. i found it to be extremely helpful as it addressed a myriad of topics from infant, toddler or older child adoptoin, international adoption, private vs. public, etc. in addition there is a great index which includes organizations all over the US to meet and discuss your concerns, adoption agencies, adoption attorneys and more. it is very thorough and a must read for anyone in the beginning stages of the adoption process.

4 out of 5 stars very informative, not judging.......2006-11-07

In reading through this book, I felt like it was a really good balance of several different stories representing different backgrounds or reasons that women have considered becoming single mothers, and the different considerations that were important to each of them. It lets the reader relate to what are the priority considerations for them and maybe even consider issues they hadn't thought of yet. It was very supportive, but not pressuring the reader to make a decision one way or the other. Very helpful and informational before making such a life changing decision. I would say some of the concerns mentioned in the book are probably somewhat less concerning as time goes on and the stigma of being a single mother changes with acceptance socially and in the medical community.

A very well written, well thought out book. This is probably one of the most difficult decisions I will have to make and reading through this book has really helped me to sort out my thoughts and feelings. It gives you permission to have a difficult time, to be comfortable with the complexity of feelings and to help you to make a choice that is right for you, whatever that choice might be.

3 out of 5 stars Okay but..........2005-10-26

This book has some useful information and stories, but seems old-fashioned at times, despite its topic of alternative families.
