Being as though I use to dabble in the lifestyle, this book REALLY hit home with me. It brought alot out alot of key points of how the lifestyle really is. I've seen marriages end up just like this all behind a cheating spouse. I felt bad for the wife, but all she had to do was be honest with her husband and go from there. I dont want to give the book away, but if this the type of books you like to read {lies, betrayl, swinging} I most def say get this book. JMO

I agree with other reviewers that this book may be an interesting history lesson about the Lifestyle, but it doesn't provide much useful information for those curious about Swinging in today's world. Also, it focuses primarily on the positive aspects of swinging, while neglecting the downside issues. I found "Doin One for the Team" and "A Private Diary: Our First Year in Swinging" to be much more helpful for those interested in what the Lifestyle is really like today, sharing both positive and negative sides of the story through the eyes of current swingers. Various types of swinging are also covered with the newer books, from mere flirtation, to voyeur only (watching and being watched), to soft swapping (oral but no intercourse), to full swapping.
The other side.......2006-10-26
Yes, this is a good view of the lifestyle, yet I would like to challenge Terry to see "the other" side. I have seen it, broken marriages, relationships in splinters, scarred hearts. Sure if your data is skewed by only interviewing those who are active in the lifestyle is will sound grande. But, what about interviewing those who have left the lifestyle, or have been damaged by it. There are always two sides. I agree, for those couples who 100% agree on their lifestyle, then no problem. But about those who do not 100% and have to compromise? I have spoken with many women in the lifestyle who said they wished they were like my husband and I. We only touch each other, and exhibit and voyuer only. Not even soft swapping. But, we love being in the sexually charged arean of the lifestyle which you cannot find anywhere else. His book does do a great job of confirming that the lifestyle is not taboo, which it is not. But for those who left and are now broken, Terry up for the challenge?

I was looking for more info on the emotional and psychological impact. I also didn't see enough negative information; in other words, I don't think ANY of the books I've read on swinging are properly balanced with both positive and negative feedback from participants.

As a couple contemplating the lifestyle, we were told this was the best book to read on the subject. Now, I would agree if I were interested in knowing all the historical facts regarding swinging, and if I needed a lot of facts to help me rationalize my decision and why it would not be wrong to swing. What I really wanted to know were about the emotional aspects that I could encounter, how to initiate contact with people, what to expect my first time, etc. Instead I found most of the stories with "real people" to take place at a resort, not a situation I am likely to be in. I think this book would be for somebody already involved in the lifestyle rather then somebody curious about it. It was very well written and researched, though.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about swinging. The author does a good job of discussing the issues that inevitably arise when one is considering giving swinging a shot. The substance of the book is very good, but the editing, grammar, and spelling leave a lot to be desired. That's pretty much the case in most books I've read in the swinging genre. Swinger books appear to be written by "real" people, without the assistance of a proofreader or editor. All in all, though, this is a good book that I enjoyed and recommend.

My wife and I have been experimenting with the lifestyle for a year now, and we found this book to be very helpful in deciphering some of the Lifestyle do's and don'ts. It was especially helpful in explaining the emotional aspects connected with feelings pre- and post- playtime. we reccommend it to anyone considering or newly into the Lifestyle.
Not another thing to Do!.......2007-03-20
I picked up this book with some expectation of I am not sure what now. This book I think helped show me that the lifestyle although it likes to think of itself as ruled by females shows that it's the males pushing from behind who are the real instigators (even the title shows this as though it is yet another chore for us women to endure). This even shows through in the authors own stories. I was disappointed to see that although her partner broke "the rules" on occassions no follow up as to how this was handled was shown (as conflict resolution within the lifestyle is a large problem). The whole story comes across as somebody trying very hard to justify what are obvious problems that she has used sex to solve. Such a pity!
Informative and current inside view of Swinging.......2007-03-16
I have now read quite a few of the available books on the swinging lifestyle and rate "Doin One for the Team: Years in the Swinging Lifestyle" with the best of them, along with "A Private Diary: Our First Year in Swinging". These are both very current and written by actual swingers, giving an insiders view of what swinging is really like. Some of the other books on swinging are either written by outsiders (reporting on swinging through secondhand information) or are philosophical or historical in nature, far less useful for those who are curious about what the swinging environment is really like today and who are seeking advice and guidance for potential participation. This book provides insight into the different types of swinging, what swing clubs and swing parties are like, different reasons why people swing, and what you should be prepared for before you take the plunge.
Know the Author and Loved the Book.......2007-02-17
When Simba told me she was doing a book and asked if she could reference our group and I was thrilled at such an honor. We have known Simba for some time and she is a dear friend. I knew this was going to be a book that is a keeper.
I have ordered her book many times to give as a gift and to couples that are new & interested in how "it" all works LOL. Its a really great read, there are so many aspects to the lifestyle and Simba's book covers many of them. The LS is not your parents "key parties" anymore LOL. In this day and age its about people making friends & connections being able to laugh and have fun not having to walk the straight and narrow for fear of offending people with fun innuendos and flirty behavior, keeping in mind that sex is not a requirement to have LS fun.
People too often think "swinger? ewww" and lets face it, thats not how it is... But everyone has an opinion (often from people who are ignorant and have no idea what they are talking about!) The stupid and seedy, out of date myths are long gone my friends, and this book helps clear it up & break it down even more!! in a classy and humerous way that sheds light into a world that people really don't know much about.

I read the other reviews on the site and was very excited about thsi book, so I ordered it and eagerly awaited its arrival.When it came, I finished the book in one sitting. Unfortunately, the book did not live up to my expectations nor did it fulfill what the other reviewers had said. As another reviewer pointed out, this book has very little information on how to hook up with your regular women that you see on the street, at the grocery store, etc. On the other hand, for the 'hobbyist', this book is a good resource on the kinds of activities available for those who have the money and don't mind paying for sex. It is a one stop source for all kinds of information, addresses , phone numbers, links to internet resources for paid adult fun.
The grammatical style of the book leaves a lot to be desired. There are spelling mistakes, grammatical errors and a basic shoddiness about the book. I know that this is not intended to be a path breaking literary work, but the least that we cane xpect from a professional publishing house is for them to have good editors who sopt such mistakes and weed them out. Otherwise, you are left with a bad taste after reading this book, and it feels like you have just had a conversation with some one with very low education.
Overall, i rate the book a 3/5 merely for the information that it contains. If I ever decide to explore paid adult fun, then I know where to start lookingfor infomation, although it is by no means comprehensive. So in all, if you are looking for advice on how to lay that cute girl next girl but have no clue how to approach, this is definitely not the book for you.

I ordered this book as a Christmas gift for a buddy and when it came I read a couple of pages then a few pages more and now I'm back here on Amazon to order another one for my buddy because I'm keeping the first one for myself. This book has so much information on the subject of how to get non-commital sex it's unbeliveable even though I have to hide at work in my desk. What a breath of fresh air this book was. It kept everything real simple just the way I like it. All I'm interested in is just sex period not a long term bulls@#t relationship I'm not looking to be domesticated now or ever. I was delighted that this was not just another one of those phoney "how to pick up girls books" and got right to the point which for me is sex with no strings attached. It probably wont help you find your next girlfriend but it sure will point you to 1000 ways on how to get laid.

This is one of several books I've read that was written by real swingers about their swinging experiences. I agree with other reviewers that the penmanship of these books often isn't quite up to professional polish, being written by everyday people, but for me, that gives them a more interesting true-to-life flavor. A Private Diary is the best of those that I've been able to find so far, both in quality and story content. After reading this book, I read "Swingers" when it was released. Although I found some sections interesting, it was a third-person report on swinging by a professional author, rather than a swinging participant. My next read will likely be "Doin One For the Team".
Boring, Repetitive, Needs an Editor.......2006-03-05
I'm almost half-way through this book now, and find it's increasingly becoming more of a struggle for me to keep going back and reading more. Most of the book is a blow-by-blow (sometimes literally) account of the author's swinging experiences, with some comments about how he and his partner felt about the experiences thrown in.
Anytime I read I find myself quickly becoming bored due to the sameness of the descriptions of their experiences, and getting really irritated with the author's habit of ending every other sentence with an exclamation mark! There is a serious need for a skilled editor here! See what I mean!
I'm no psychologist, and maybe I'm just envious, but the author also seems to spend a lot of time and effort describing in repetitious detail his own (and his partner's) insatiable sexual appetites. How many times do I need a description of how much she squirts, how many times he humps in an evening, how big and hard he gets, and how often they make love when by themselves, including seemingly mandatory descriptions of their yells upon cumming and of course more exclamation marks!? I can enjoy and get off on good written porn, but this is not it.
I've had a lot of swinging experiences myself, so I do know what it is like, and can identify with most of the author's experiences. On the other hand, I think they could be communicated in a much more skilled manner by another author.
The more I read, the more I feel ripped off by the(...)price. All in all, I'm sorry I bought the book. There are other books and DVDs that do a much better job describing swinging experiences and emotions.

As the title indicates, this book is the diary of a couple's first year in the swinging lifestyle. I found it very realistic and so much fun to read, taking you through their first tentative yet also highly enthusiastic steps into swinging. There were many lessons learned during their first few experiences, with the author ready to quit, unsure he was suited for the lifestyle. This provides valuable real life information for those taking their first plunge into swinging. Swinging is not for everyone and there is comfort in knowing that most everyone has a rough time initially, with many emotional issues and a period of adjustment as they find out what works best for them and what isn't comfortable for them and they should therefore avoid. The book was very good at exposing many of the ups and downs that are encountered during swinging, social, physical and emotional. The latter half of the book provided some sexually explicit and highly erotic adventures, where the couple experienced a number of their longtime sexual fantasies, including various 3-somes, 4-somes, role-playing (e.g. a date with a hooker in a bar), squirting female orgasms, oral and anal sex. Overall, a very entertaining and enjoyable book!

Researcher view of swinging in U.K........2006-07-12
I can't agree with the advertisement that this book is the "first expose' of the recreational sex scene", but I did find it to be an interesting collection of stories on the various ways that swingers choose to engage in their hobby. I found especially interesting some of the differences in the U.K. that are revealed in this book, such as "dogging", which I don't believe has met the same level of popularity (or notoriety?) in the U.S. (Dogging is apparently popular in the U.K., where people drive to a public parking area at night to have sex in their car while others watch or perhaps participate). Other stories have been selected by the author to show a representative set of ways that people engage in swinging, including swing clubs, meeting on the internet, attending house parties, etc. The stories are based on interviews done by the author with actual swingers.
Although the author's professionalism provides a very polished and well-written book, I found "A Private Diary: Our First Year in Swinging" was actually a more enjoyable read. The stories in this book had a more commercial flavor, such as you might expect, for example, from a "made for TV" movie based on a true story, where the author takes some liberties in the telling of the story to make it more appealing and marketable. In "A Private Diary", the stories may be less grammatically polished, but they have a much better feel of realism that I enjoyed. I would still recommend this book as an interesting view of swinging differences found outside the U.S. Perhaps dogging will start to catch on here as well?

Nice words, mediocre perfomance.......2005-11-07
The book is lovely, the words are turn-of-the-century homey feeling, and the songs are all new to me (and I have been singing for years and years). However, the children singing the songs *are* just children, and this sounds like just a very good school recital, with the choir teacher playing a simple piano background for most songs. Don't get me wrong -- they are a very good school choir, but I hoped for a more professional, warmer and richer sound.
If you get it, enjoy the words, but don't try too hard to copy the singers. If you are a professional musician, the CD may drive you crazy -- especially the emphasis on the Rs at the end of MothERR, singERR, wintERR, etc.

This is an excellent book for someone looking for unique children's songs from a variety of ethnic origins. I did not know any song in this collection, although I am familiar with several of the poems from which some of them originate.
The CD is very helpful to hear the songs played and sung, although the style of the choir is not my favorite and I find the recordings a bit monotonous as a whole. The songs themselves are very different in style and origin, and I wish the recordings were equally varied.
For someone looking for a collection of more popular children's songs that your kids might already be singing I would recommend Singing Bee, but if you want variety and uniqueness, this is the book for you.
The illustrations are beautiful, and my daughter loves to flip through the book and make up her own songs based on the images!

My 3-year-old son absolutely adores this book and CD. He loves looking at the beautiful color pictures and listening to me sing the songs. He has even picked up the words to many of the songs, and likes to sing along. The songs are unusual -- I had not heard most of them -- and beautiful, with lovely messages about nature and joyful living. A good change from the common nursery rhymes all children learn. There are also some games (actions) suggested for some songs. I took the book to my son's preschool and we sang songs and did the motions -- the kids loved it. I have bought four copies of this book to give away to friends and relatives.

Super-durable hard cover book with high quality glossy paper. Contains music and words to 80 songs. There are 56 songs on the CD. Illustrations are colored-in woodcuts and charcoal sketches. Illustrations go with almost every song and include animals, nature scenes, and multicultural children who are happy and doing just about every activity from blowing dandelion seeds into the wind to playing dress-up as king and queen. Songs are well organized by subject. The "chapters" are: morning, play, nature, games, birthday, weather, and evening. An alphabetical index of song titles is at the end of the book. Songs that are included on the CD are clearly marked in the text. The CD is piano music with a chorus of children singing. What a wonderful resource for parents and teachers!

I chose to read this book for what it was intended to be, true stories of swinging from real life experiences. There are different "types" of books available about swinging. Some are "How To" guides, some are philosophical discussions about the alternative lifestyles of society, and of course, there are also books in the porn or erotica category, which will necessarily be fictionalized to make them fantasy material for reading while masturbating. Although real life swinging experiences might have some erotic moments, I certainly wasn't naive enough to expect a book of this type to be like those found in a porn book store. However, this book was still very disappointing. It was poorly written and had very little flow. The formatting is terribly annoying. I bought the book with the proper expectation, I was looking for an open and honest depiction of real swinging experiences, but this book is very poor and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

I am researching swinging and clearly assumed this was something it isn't. I'd hoped it would have some insight, or at least something interesting or fun to offer. I was so annoyed with this book I almost sent it back to Amazon, and still might.
The first thing you will notice is the schizophrenic typesetting, which is somehow meant to look like a diary but mostly insults the senses and makes it harder to read. It was done in a series of over-sized script-like fonts using 16 or 18 pt type. What you get after that is 102 pages of so-called journaling which is so uninspiring that it's difficult to describe. Let's just say on page 6 the guy writes in huge caps about his partner "THIS WOMAN IS NEVER, EVER A SLUT! She just likes sex - a lot --as most women do." And it goes downhill from there as she has mindless sex with every guy at Hedonism, who, by the way, are all incredible looking hunks while her husband watches and drools.
If you are looking for something steamy to read, go to the erotica readers and writers website. Heck, if you're so hard up for stimulation that you'd read something like "Swinging," go to the nearest cement wall and bang your head against it. (...)You will learn nothing about swinging from this book except to hope that you never, ever meet people like these with your clothes on or off.

It's refreshing to see new titles come along as an addition to the paltry few that deal with the "ghetto-ized" topic of non-monogamy. This one draws heavily on the long personal practical experience of the authors [and interviews with others with long personal practical experience], so the material certainly isn't dry. It covers a very impressive range of subjects and perspectives, making it less "axe-grindy" than some other books in this area. And it tackles some tough questions that other books skirt around. For these reasons, I'd like to recommend it as a First Read on polyamory.
However, the book needed an[other] editor. Glitches of spelling and grammar are liberally scattered throughout, as well as factual errors. [Guys, Tolstoy wrote "War and Peace" -- Dostoevsky wrote other stuff.] And the text sometimes shows a tendency to leap from one topic to another in unexpected places, making it needlessly scattered and hard to follow. This sort of presentation reflects negatively on the credibility of the ideas it contains... which we can't really afford when there are so few apologists for this alternative lifestyle as it is.
[And the Heinleins quote several times from Robert A. Heinlein, which leaves me wishing they'd said something about their relation to him if any. ;) ]

this book is insightful, honest and incredibly positive. it made me feel good about the unconventional lifestyle choices i'm prone to making. it made my married with children friend feel much the same. Also, the handbook is good for more than a few laughs. in a new relationship, it is a great way to begin any conversation you might ever want to have about sex, love and the nature of relationships. thank you for this amazing handbook. . . it left no stone unturned.

It's an Eye Opener!.......2004-07-31
It's amazing to hear that this type of lifestyle exists. I thought that free love died out in the 60's. But this book says that back then it was not really very common, and there's really more of it going on today! I liked the way the book talked about honesty and communication in any relationship, and I think that everyone should read this book before they get married. I recommend it.
Psuedo-Intellectual Gobledegook.......2004-07-29
Got this book hoping to find some interesting insights into an alternate lifestyle. What the reader actually gets is a manifesto laced with personal opinions and anecdotes that is written from the perspective of a Lifestyle apologist. Those in the Lifestyle should be very wary of writers like this who expouse political opinions as a much as they do sex advice. Without a doubt, it's not puritanical ideals of this country that keep polyamory and the lifestyle in the closet. It's the very poor advocates like the Heinleins who speak on behalf of it. The good news is that this book won't be read by many and that there are new resources where itelligent people can get accurate information on this subject.
