The red tent is the place where women gathered during their cycles of birthing, menses, and even illness. Like the conversations and mysteries held within this feminine tent, this sweeping piece of fiction offers an insider's look at the daily life of a biblical sorority of mothers and wives and their one and only daughter, Dinah. Told in the voice of Jacob's daughter Dinah (who only received a glimpse of recognition in the Book of Genesis), we are privy to the fascinating feminine characters who bled within the red tent. In a confiding and poetic voice, Dinah whispers stories of her four mothers, Rachel, Leah, Zilpah, and Bilhah--all wives to Jacob, and each one embodying unique feminine traits. As she reveals these sensual and emotionally charged stories we learn of birthing miracles, slaves, artisans, household gods, and sisterhood secrets. Eventually Dinah delves into her own saga of betrayals, grief, and a call to midwifery.

"Like any sisters who live together and share a husband, my mother and aunties spun a sticky web of loyalties and grudges," Anita Diamant writes in the voice of Dinah. "They traded secrets like bracelets, and these were handed down to me the only surviving girl. They told me things I was too young to hear. They held my face between their hands and made me swear to remember." Remembering women's earthy stories and passionate history is indeed the theme of this magnificent book. In fact, it's been said that The Red Tent is what the Bible might have been had it been written by God's daughters, instead of her sons. --Gail Hudson

Book Description

Her name is Dinah. In the Bible, her life is only hinted at in a brief and violent detour within the more familiar chapters of the Book of Genesis that are about her father, Jacob, and his dozen sons. Told in Dinah's voice, this novel reveals the traditions and turmoils of ancient womanhood-the world of the red tent. It begins with the story of her mothers-Leah, Rachel, Zilpah, and Bilhah-the four wives of Jacob. They love Dinah and give her gifts that sustain her through a hard-working youth, a calling to midwifery, and a new home in a foreign land. Dinah's story reaches out from a remarkable period of early history and creates an intimate connection with the past. Deeply affecting, The Red Tent combines rich storytelling with a valuable achievement in modern fiction: a new view of biblical women's society.

5 out of 5 stars A story for women of all ages!.......2007-10-09

I have a hard time getting into a lot of contemporary literature, but I just LOVED book! I've read it twice -- first in my twenties before I had children and then later in my thirties after having my first child. In my twenties I was enchanted by the first part of Dinah's story -- her childhood and relationships with her various "mothers". Then, later, as a mother I was moved by Dinah's story after giving birth and her bittersweet relationship with her own child. Maybe I'll read it again in another 10 years...

5 out of 5 stars So much more than expected!.......2007-10-07

I donated my first copy of The Red Tent to the Goodwill without having read a single page. Because I'm not one to give to much thought to the bond I share with other women just because we're women, and because I don't have sisters or share a deep connection with many women in my family, I assumed this book was not for me. Years later, however, I decided to give the The Red Tent a shot; and it turned out to be a page-turner.

The Red Tent offers a thought-provoking emotional read . . . An amazing story of strength, love, survival, loyalty, and betrayal. I cared about the characters from beginning to end (regardless of whether I could relate my own experiences to theirs) and found myself so full of sorrow at one point I actually put the book aside and sobbed. Colorful images, beautiful descriptive language, realistic fiction . . . a inarguably well-written novel with immense depth. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars The Red Tent.......2007-10-05

It was an excellent book. I really enjoyed it. It did follow the Bible somewhat but then it is fiction, based on some facts.

5 out of 5 stars Riveting Red Tent!.......2007-10-05

I could not put it down....It gave me the desire to go back and read my bible in a new light, from a woman's point of view! The characters in the bible came to life with their own unique personalities, although I know that the book is a novel and the author is not claiming historical accuracy. This book is a must-read!

5 out of 5 stars A Man's Point Of View.......2007-10-02

I am 66 years old and just finished this book. People saw me reading "A Thousand Splended Suns" and recommended "The Red Tent". Both books are about women. I am sure women appreciate them because they learn about other times and culture. For a man, I think these books are so revealing because we learn, in addition, what its like to be a woman. I loved them both and cried reading both. I highly recommend them. You will have an emotional experience you will never forget.

5 out of 5 stars the best I've seen so far.......2007-10-05

The reason I really like this is it gives very specific details on each campground. For example, it will even breakdown by the site number which ones have more trees, which are quieter, and, if there's a stream which sites are closest to the stream. It especially has a good introduction (Pg.1), stating that "life is short, and life is about choices...". It would be better, therefore, to stay at the best campground one can find, rather than simply making do with a run-of-the mill noisy, dumpy rv park. And this book only reviews the cream of the crop rv parks!

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2007-09-21

I found this book to be chock full of info. It is a little intimidating being it covers all states but very helpful. The enclosed maps makes it easier to locate campgrounds. I find this book helpful, informative and easy to read.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for campers and the like.......2006-12-29

Love the book and gave it as a Christmas gift - and he loves it. He is an RVer and I am a tent camper, so it is the best of both worlds. We haven't used it to be able to compare their ratings to our ratings, but just looking through it makes me ready to pack up and get out!! More information on places that I didn't even know existed surrounding me - and more!! Would make an excellent gift.

5 out of 5 stars A 'must have' for RV'ing Alaska!.......2007-09-23

I waited to review this book until our return from Alaska. I must say it was amazing! We were driving a 32' Winnebago Chalet from Great Alaskan Holidays (a good experience, I would like to add) and wanted to eliminate getting 'stuck' in tight spaces so we quickly learned to look for those warnings in the book. The campgrounds are described very accurately, the pricing info was reliable and the route descriptions and depictions are also reliable and organized. We also relied on The Milepost for general info on services and sights but for locating campgrounds, this book was invaluable! We RV with Foghorn's books on the west coast of the lower 48 and they are very good too!

5 out of 5 stars Easy to read.......2007-07-17

We found the book very informative, easy to follow, and great value for the price. We plan to use it on our next trip to Alaska and the Yukon.

5 out of 5 stars VERY COMPLETE & COMPREHENSIVE.......2007-05-24

As I write this review, my husband and I are about a week and a half away from leaving on our 4-month expedition to Alaska. We are leaving in early June 2007 and expect to return to Texas by October 1, 2007. I bought this book in April 2007 and have looked at it extensively since I bought it. I'm pretty sure it will be at least as valuable to us as the Milepost will be, if not more so. It begins by answering many questions one may have about what kind of clothes to bring, what to expect at the border, how much money to bring, the best places to see wildlife, insects, laundry - you get the picture. It covers just about everything. It appears as though the authors have visited and rated every campground, private and government, and every place where it's legal to park your rig along the Highway. Directions to each campground are given according to its milepost marker and its GPS location. There are little pictures of each town and where each campground, store and point of interest is located. It describes the places not to miss along the way, as well as good places to fish. I only wish the authors had included all that information through Canada as well!

I'm pretty sure this guide will be well-worn by the time we get home. If you're planning to RV through Alaska, you need to get this book!

5 out of 5 stars Great Campground Guide.......2007-03-12

I should probably wait until after our trip in June, 2007, but so far this has been a great campground guide for planning. I have been using it in addition to the Lonely Planet book and the Milepost.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Essential!.......2006-10-21

We recently completed a four-month motorhome trip to Alaska. We had several books with us, but the most consistent good information came from this book. The campground descriptions were right on. In addition to camping, when we had to decide whether to see one attraction vs another, the book's advice was invaluable. Don't leave home without it!

5 out of 5 stars One to keep with you.......2007-05-17

We love this book. It has helped us sort through all the choices of campgrounds out there. Fun to read and imagine all the places we can go!

5 out of 5 stars You gotta have it!.......2006-11-10

I have owned several editions of this book and have passed the old ones on to family and friends. Just the intro is wonderful for people starting to camp. (Key piece of advise from Tom - Schedule your camping time just like you schedule anything else, otherwise it won't happen.) It's fun to check out nearby campgrounds when you bring the book camping with you. I have enjoyed many nights turning the pages and deciding where to camp next. There are books like this for other states, but the California book is the gold stadard. The book will never be 100% accurate, but that's the nature of the beast. It would be great if this info was on a website with amazon-like feedback and google earth views of the campground, photos and maps -- plus a way to access it all in your car! Until then, this is the best. Get his California Hiking book, too. Thanks for writing them and keeping them up to date, Tom! They have lead to many wonderful, memorable trips and hikes for me, my wife and my camping buddies of various ages over many years.

5 out of 5 stars Our Favorite Series of Campground Guides.......2006-11-01

As indicated by other reviewers, the Foghorn (Moon) series of campground guides is not without flaws. Even so, we know of no directories which do a better job of addressing campground aesthetics than these wonderful guides. In our experience, the look and feel of a campground is often the single greatest factor influencing the quality of a camping experience . . . and the factor totally ignored by nearly all other campground guides.

There are a number of directories which rate facilities, provide directions, tell you how to make reservations and give you an idea of the cost for a night's stay in a specific campground. This series gives similar basic information and then goes beyond that. The Foghorn (Moon)guides actually give you a feel of what it is like to stay in a specific campground - a bit of a narrative description and a "scenic beauty rating" for each campground plus information about nearby recreation opportunities. We like that a lot.

Have we found instances where we liked a campground more or less than the book's author? Of course. Tastes differ and things change over time. Even so, we would rather have an admittedly subjective rating of a campground's intangibles than to have nothing to go on but a recitation of facts and figures.

Are the Foghorn (Moon) Outdoors the only guides we carry? No. But they are ALWAYS the first place we turn when selecting a destination campground.

4 out of 5 stars The Bible of California Camping?.......2006-09-04

Maybe this Foghorn publication, California Camping by Tom Steinstra, is the bible of camping, at least for California, but it probably needs another good scrubbing or at least an editor. I have purchased this book twice, 03 and 05 editions, and a few things changed, e.g., when the listing for Palomar Mtn SP mentioned that Reserve America honored this park as one its Top 200 Family Campgrounds. This was a nice addendum to the last edition. But, in some cases, the editors, more than Steinstra, need to make the rounds, at least at the more popular sites. For example, California Camping mentions that El Capitan SB has one of the "best fishing" sites, but from what we have understood over the last few years is that fishing no longer even takes place in the nearby stream - due mostly to drought. Though, if someone said El Capitan is the best for Dolphin watching that would be entirely accurate. Also, Tillie Creek is rated "9" for scenery, apparently, but all the upper front and near the lake sites were closed this year not to mention there is no "creek running" in the summer. However, this book has proven over and over to be accurate in about 90% plus of its content which is great when you have kids. A couple of suggestions might help if, for example, in addition to the scenery rating, could there just be an overall rating, i.e. 1-10 based on Steinstra's standards or the type of campground? And, could the editors create a means by which campers and readers could report their findings back to the publisher? Could the editors make sure to get an accurate update from park rangers, agencies, and private campsites for any basic changes that might have occurred? Okay, so no matter what I say, California Camping is probably the best camping guide out there, in my opinion. I just would like author, editor, and publisher to make it a bit more current and relevent for the next edition, which, of course,I will most likely purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and personal.......2006-08-26

I can't speak for the person who disagreed with some of the ratings. In my experience, this is an invaluable reference, and the personal descriptions of each campground are extremely helpful. Few references will go the extra mile to provide ratings and personal observations about each site like this one does. It's clear that the author has actually visited most of these sites, which is not always the case. It's a great book, and the anecdotes & camping advice in the introduction are very well-written. This book covers every kind of campsite in California, from hike-in primitive sites to RV parking lots. I highly recommend it.

Book Description

In recent years there has been an explosion of curiosity and debate about Islam and about the role of religion, both in the world and in the Arab-Israeli conflict. The numerous books published on these questions speak to issues of politics, history, or global security. None speaks to the heart and the spirit, and yet millions of people experience these issues not as political, economic, or intellectual questions but as questions of deep spiritual, emotional, and religious significance.

The Tent of Abraham provides readers with stories that can bring all the faiths together. Written by Saadi Shakur Chishti, a Scottish American Sufi, Rabbi Arthur Waskow, an American Jew, and Joan Chittister, a Benedictine sister, the book explores in accessible language the mythic quality and the teachings of reconciliation that are embedded in the Torah, the Qur'an, and the Bible. It also weaves together the wisdoms of the Jewish, Muslim, and Christian traditions into a deeper, more unified whole.

The Tent of Abraham is the first book to tell the whole story of Abraham as found in Jewish, Christian, and Muslim sources and to reenergize it as a basis for peace.

Joan Chittister, OSB, is a best-selling writer and lecturer. She lives in Erie, Pennsylvania. Rabbi Arthur Waskow is the director of The Shalom Center in Philadelphia and author of numerous books, including Seasons of Our Joy (Beacon/ 3611-0/ $18.00 pb) and Down-to-Earth Judaism. Saadi Shakur Chishti (Neil Douglas-Klotz) is an internationally known Sufi scholar and writer. His most recent book is The Sufi Book of Life.

5 out of 5 stars A RABBI, A MUSLIM AND A NUN WALK INTO THE TENT OF ABRAHAM AND EACH ONE DISCOVERED THEMSELVES AT HOME.......2007-07-20

Please notice the reading regarding Abraham receiving the three travellers is this Sunday's First Reading in the Roman Catholic liturgy, followed by the Gospel Reading regarding the complementary hospitality of Mary and Martha.

And if you find that representation as bar joke unappealing, let us read it like Dante: A nun, a rabbi and a Muslim awoke in the midstream of their lives to discover themselves in a dark woods of war and danger, of fear and cruelty, and fled back to the welcoming refuge of Abraham's tent.

Or Biblically: Abram looked out from his tent and saw three strangers approaching: A Rabbi, a Muslim and a nun. Abram ran out to prostrate himself at their feet and beg them to come into his tent to rest and to eat and to pray together. They told him to call himself Abraham and his wife Sarah. And the rest is our history.

An interesting aspect of this recent book is that it reads best from the back to the front. Thus alone do we discover the unmentioned and secret author, the Rabbi Phyllis Berman, sharing her secret story, treasured for ages in secret among Hebrew women, of the profound love, alliance, solidarity and companionship of Hagar and Sarai, and thus of all the peoples engendered by Abraham: The Judeo-christian and Islam, an inheritance more numerous than the grains of sand by the sea and the stars at night.

The leaves high at the top of a mighty oak tree might know only their separation, might feel only their beating one another in the powerful winds that pass. Only by looking way back may they perceive that they in fact spring from the one thick and solid trunk and are in fact children of the one Father.

Other important books to read in this regard were written by the Islamic scholar and Roman Catholic Deacon, George Dardess, in particular his great Do We Worship the Same God?: Comparing the Bible And the Qur'an as well as his Meeting Islam: A Guide For Christians (A Many Mansions Book).

Truly this present volume is a monument necessary for our needlessly divided times which profit no one but the war mongers and munitions makers. By this great cornerstone may we rebuild the great kingdom of peace and compassion which our One God commanded, to which our One God guides us, the thirst for which our One God fills our Spirit.

This book serves well for Lectio Divina, including the remarkable Forward by Karen Armstrong, who reminds us that Abraham, in receiving the Three Strangers into his Tent, receives God. "The act of practical compassion led directly to a divine encounter." She goes on: " . . .it expresses a religious truth found in all the major traditions: it is compassion, not righteousness and doctrinal certainty, that leads us into the presence of what monotheists call God, . . ."

Recall here that the Latin roots of our word religion indicate a binding back together again, to ourselves, to one another, to God. Religion therefore ties us all together in one family, one humanity, united by God. Religion explicitly does not permit us to kill one another, not even in the name of God, but to love one another.

Truly this book is far too profound and important and prophetic for our times for me to attempt a superficial summary here. This is a book to live with, and to awaken by to the welcoming fact that we all dwell within the generous tent of Abraham. This book comes recommended by several authoritative sources, including Tikkum, which writes, "This book will open your eyes to the possibilities of collaborative work between our traditions, and is a must read for those doing interfaith peacework."

Our duty as believers is to do interpersonal peacework. Blessed are the Peacemakers. Do for others what you want them to do for you. Read this book and live it, please, for the sake of our children and their children.

Late last year Our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI, paused in silent prayer inside Turkey's Blue Mosque, breathing our unity of Faith. May we follow faithfully his holy example.

And what a joy and a relief to read in this context the great Benedictine Sister Joan Chittister, still strong and prophetic. I also strongly recommend her The Rule of Benedict: Insights for the Ages (Crossroad Spiritual Legacy Series). It was she who led me to this Tent of Abraham, now available in paperback and important for us to study carefully and prayerfully today.

5 out of 5 stars Praises for this contribution to peace.......2007-03-25

This is a most important book, and I highly recommend it. The combination of a Christian Sister, a Rabbi and a Sufi Murshid discussing their views of Abraham and Sarah's lives/tent from an in-depth perspective offers a model for peace and discussion that can be used in Churches, Mosques and Synagogues around the world.

The authors present a discussion and model for deeper discourse that offers much hope in our seriously troubled world. The following Sura quoted from the Qur'an on page 133 of The Tent of Abraham highlights its message:

"So turn your face and purpose towards the priordial religion of the upright, the hanif, the nature innately formed by the One Reality in which the One created humanity. Let there be no change in this work created by the One. This religion is self-subsisting, the standard, always resurrecting itself. But most among humanity do not understand. Turn to and remain conscious only of the One, remaining constantly in prayer. Don't deify anything else in yor life, not concepts or beliefs. Don't divide yourselves into sects that contratulate themselves on their own ideas (translation of Sura 30:30-32).

We are all part of one human family who simply need to realize our divine Unity. Thank you Sr. Joan Chittister, Rabbi Waskow and Murshid Saadi for such a heartful book.

5 out of 5 stars Courageous Grief Provides Room Under the Tent for All.......2007-01-04

The story of Father Abraham is shared by Jews, Christians & Muslims. The fac that the two sons Issac & Ishamel reconcile in order to honor their Father in death provides a basis for Peace if we will make this our story.

5 out of 5 stars Historical Background.......2007-01-04

The book provides a good historical background of the three major religious movements. As a Christian, I learned a great deal more about the foundations of both the Jewish and Muslim faiths. It was helpful to my understanding of circumstances as they exist today.

5 out of 5 stars Doyal.......2006-11-04

The Tent of Abraham presents a vision of hope: what Jews, Christians and Muslims can do for a mutual understanding of the essence that binds these three great religions in Abraham. This book is especially clutching in showing the reader how women, mothers caught up in the madness of war, can see more clearly than politicians, that our humanity and our compassion should inform us that war can never be a satisfactory solution to any human need. People of all faiths should read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Mexican Camping.......2007-10-06

I've been searching on the internet for information on RV (Trailer Parks in Mexico) Resorts in Mexico and it hasn't been very useful. This book however is exactly what I was searching for on the internet but MUCH, MUCH handyer.

5 out of 5 stars A dream becoming reality.......2007-09-01

Thanks to this book, we will be able to get on with our project, drive into Mexico with our Class A. We probably would have done it anyway, but this book makes things easier and with less hassle and waste of time.
We know, now, exactly what and where we will go on our 3 month trip.

2 out of 5 stars Mexican Camping?.......2007-06-08

There is not much useful in this book. Traveling widely in Mexico and checking out many of the suggested stops, few still exist. Just try calling them. One of the few that was still in operation had an overflowing septic tank and was intolerable.
Alas, dry camping with permission is the order of the day. Luckily Mexicans are nice about it. US style RV or tent camping sites are rare as hen's teeth. Since the right to bear arms does not exist in Mexico, security can be a real issue if you make a bad decision. Maybe the best advice, if you do not caravan, would be to drive a decrepit, ratty, small RV so as not to attract the wrong sort.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT CAMPING GUIDE.......2006-02-05

I found the book a GREAT guide for camping with my RV.The publishers website has updates on the campgrounds.

5 out of 5 stars Traveler's Guide to Mexican Camping.......2005-04-11

We found the Churchs book an essential aid in navigating around some of Mexico's cities and finding interesting campsites. Each page is filled with useful information, maps, directions and commentary on camping places that aid in trip planning.

5 out of 5 stars Up, Up and Away.......2007-10-08

Craig Fenton's "Take Me To The Circus Tent" is a lovingly compiled compendium of legendary rock supergroup "Jeferson Airplane". The book is so thoroughly documented that you'd swear that Mr. Fenton was present at the creation and never missed a performance. Facts and photos galore. "Circus Tent" shares many similarities with "Deadbase", the performance history of the Grateful Dead, and will no doubt prove just as invaluable.

5 out of 5 stars The Airplane Encyclopedia .......2007-08-03

Fantastic book: full of tape information, photos, setlists, great interviews. A must for JA fans.

Does for the Airplane what Deadbase did for the Dead. Great book.

5 out of 5 stars Fly Jefferson Airplane with Craig.......2007-07-19

For a fan of the legendary Jefferson Airplane, this book held open the promise of a long overdue look at one of the very greatest rock bands.
I had high hopes and expectations when I purchased this book, but Craig Fenton surpassed even my loftiest hopes.

The Airplane were the leading rock band in the USA from Monterey Pop in '67 through Woodstock and Altamont in '69. For reasons that escape me, history has let them slip away, not realizing that they were the lead act on the second day of Woodstock. Now revered bands such as The Who were mere opening acts on Airplane tours, but the vast majority of America has forgotten them.

Craig Fenton has managed to create a masterpiece that can reopen America's eyes and ears to the Airplane. I have read many books on various rock bands, but I have never found one as well researched and filled with more treasure tid bits. It is hard to fathom how Craig managed to speak with all of the major players, and even more amazing how he included so many 'minor' players. Casual music fans know that JA split into Hot Tuna and Jefferson Starship. Die hard JA fans know Signe Anderson was the female singer on the first JA albums. However, anyone who picks up this book will know everyone and everything that happened in the JA/HT/JS world.

This book is so captivating that I keep picking it up night after night. Craig Fenton has written with such conviction and passion that I now expect him to be able to convince Grace, Paul, Marty, Jorma, and Jack to "Get Together" one more time.

5 out of 5 stars Jefferson Airplane soars and roars in the pages of this wonderful book.......2007-07-14

Jefferson Airplane was one of the premiere San Francisco,California rock music bands who came to prominence during the mid to late 1960's and who have cemented their reputations as a 1st rate live act through thousands of performances given over a 42-year period [albeit with various line-ups taking to the stage].

Craig Fenton's new book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" chronicles this stellar musical group's odyssey by focusing primarily on their highly underrated concert sets. Here we have a collector's dream package: every show from 1965 through the present day is meticulously documented [what was played, how one version of a particular song varied from venue to venue in a given tour, who played what instrument, etc].
There are also the interviews one would expect--but not all the same, trite question/answers we have read many, many times over. This book's author dared ask "if [drummer] Spencer Dryden was proficient enough in the 1960's to be a Jefferson Airplane drummer, whjat made him deficient in the 1970's?" The answer is thoughtful and real.
Another point on the interviews: many of the Jefferson Airplane's supporting musicians were interviewed for this book and their thoughts and recollections add a dimension that is worth the price of admission.
The most gratifying part of discovering this book is when I am speaking with other music fans who 'like' Jefferson Airplane [I LOVE the band], yet were/are totally absorbed by the scope and breadth of the material contained in this HUGE work [over 540 pages].

5 out of 5 stars A Circus Tent Like No Other.......2007-06-25

The greatest compliment I can give an author is where the book ends up upon its conclusion. If it is filed away the second the last words have been comprehended, it hadn't made a significant enough impression.

Mr. Fenton's Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" isn't ever going to far from my arms reach. I was pleasantly surprised with the tremendous effort he put forward. The first inclination to the books brilliance was a photo before the meat and potatoes. My eyes were fixated on a picture of the pre-Grace and Spencer period of the band. Seeing both Skip Spence and Signe Anderson represented together was an obvious clue Mr. Fenton would give us the history lesson from the roots to the last time on stage.

As the story is being told the interspersing of over ninety photos may very well be unparalleled. The sheer amount will engage any fan in wanting a copy of the book. It isn't only the quantity but the percentage that have not been previously available. Herb Greene who provided the cover to the Airplane's second album "Surrealistic Pillow" provides his magical photography on a great many of the shots. These include not only the Airplane but some outstanding pictures from Grace Slick with the Great Society.

It is one thing for a fan to be passionate about Mr. Fenton's book but is evident the respect it commanded from those that were there for the ride. Marty Balin has a quote on the back cover "Craig Fenton knows so much about the Jefferson Airplane and Family, I was asking him the questions." The original bass-player Bob Harvey supplied Mr. Fenton with a rare photo of his bluegrass group way back when (Slippery Rock String Band) he took of Marty and a picture of Marty he took at the Airplane Mansion.

Besides a look at 120 live performances and roughly 60 studio songs that were alternate versions, rehearsals, or demos, Mr. Fenton's main course may be the interview section. There are over thirty transcribed interviews from the Airplane and family. Here is where Mr. Fenton's passion for the band is evident. No matter how knowledgeable you are about the Airplane if you keep track of every piece of information that surfaces during the conversations his knowledge will astonish you.

"Take Me To A Circus Tent" is a tribute to one of the finest bands to ever record and hit the stage. Mr. Fenton makes you feel as if you were there all along.

A most excellent book!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars eh........2007-05-15

This book was just "okay." Only 50 sites were reviewed, and really, for Northern California, that's not even a drop in the bucket. Still, the layout is easy to read.

4 out of 5 stars Great Insider Information.......2007-02-26

Overall, this book is definitly worth buying. I wish it had better maps. Perhaps an area map next to each campsite listing. That would help with planning.

4 out of 5 stars Good guide, poor index.......2006-12-22

Overall I really appreciate this guide book but it's continually frustrating to try to match up the map page to the actual index and chapters- there's no logical connection, very annoying. But the overall content is great, recommend this one!

5 out of 5 stars made our camping vacation.......2006-09-30

We just got back from a car camping vacation transversing the Northern Sierras from North to South. We used this book exclusively and it was spot on. We stayed at Warner Valley in Lassen National park by hot springs of Drakesbad,Salmon Creek by the unbelievably dramatic Sardine lake in the Gold lakes region, Woods lake by Carson pass: a true Gem in the high country with wildflowers, and Wahakaluuhepyou on the Stanislaus river where it was hot and the swimming holes were refreshing. It was a perfect vacation with especially nice campgrounds in remarkably scenic areas.
I liked the fact that only the authors favorites were included in this guide. I have another camping book which lists all the California campgrounds which is just too confusing. This book has a focus."Proof is in the pudding" applies to this invaluable guide to the "Best in tent camping": we used it and discovered places that exceeded our best dreams.
Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Best Campground Guide.......2005-08-15

We love to camp, but like so many families, both parents work and we don't have a lot of time to go driving around on the weekends to find good campgrounds. That's why this book is so great. It tells you all about the best campgrounds in Northern California - the roads in, the sites themselves, the amenities, the phone numbers of the office/ranger stations, EVERYTHING! We have found it to be a valuable addition to our comping gear!

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Significant Printing Errors Affect Usability.......2007-06-27

I do not know about the first edition, but this second edition has been thoroughly messed up in production. The map with the reviewed campgrounds marked and numbered is missing a section about an inch wide all the way down the middle (i.e. cut off by binding margins), and a number of sites are lost to the void. Secondly, unlike other Best in Tent Camping editions, the camp ground profile pages themselves are not keyed to the map's numbering system, so if you are looking at the map, you must then look the map number up in the index to find the page number for the campground profile. Then, to make matters worse, all the page numbers on the key page are off by a page or two (correct in table of contents but no map keys there).

To make it usable, first go through and number all the profiles to key them to the map by hand. Then go to the map and add the number "13" to the cutoff triangle under ROANOKE (ROA[...] on map). If I can sort out where numbers 35, 37 and 39 are, I will edit this post to add that information (unfortunately, unlike others in the series, there are no GPS coordinates in this one).

Otherwise, the Best in Tent Camping series is a unique and useful resource.

5 out of 5 stars A great guide to Virginia's public campgrounds.......2005-01-04

Tent campers who crave the peace and quiet of wilderness and traveling families who just want to save money by camping will appreciate this guidebook. Fifty campgrounds are reviewed and mapped with key information handily summarized in sidebars. In this second edition (2004), writer Marie Javins updated Randy Porter's book. Both writers are from Virginia and show a love of this state's natural beauty. Expect to find the usual basics, full narrative descriptions to help you plan your trip, and even internet contact information. Travelers will appreciate the tips on getting around, not only by car but in some cases by canoe or by public transit.

5 out of 5 stars A no-nonsense outdoors companion for tent campers .......2004-11-09

Now in its second edition, The Best In Tent Camping Virginia is a no-nonsense outdoors companion and "user friendly" guide for tent campers who prefer serene campsites and eschew RV's. Written by campers who have set their tents and evaluated grounds for years, The Best In Tent Camping Virginia offers choice sites with campground layout maps, information on fees, restrictions, and dates of operation, ratings for beauty, privacy, spaciousness, quiet, security, and cleanliness, and a thorough evaluation with particular notes unique to each locale. Highly recommended for any would-be Virginia tent camper looking for an optimum experience.
