5 out of 5 stars A wild romp of a book.......2007-05-25

This play focuses on two love affairs. Shakespeare plays on misconceptions, and nothing is at it seems. There are a lot of double entendres throughout the play, and the audience's perception of what is going on, is totally the opposite of what the characters are feeling. This is another good play to see performed.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Shakespeare.......2006-12-27

Cute romantic comedy by Shakespeare which is short and entertaining. I am not a huge fan of the Bard, but I enjoyed this play despite the less than spectacular translation. Other plays like Hamlet, Julius Caesar and Othello are good reads as well.

5 out of 5 stars Much Ado About Nothing.......2006-08-28

Here's the deal. The best way to appreciate Shakespeare is on a DVD with subtitles. But it has to be performed by some folks with the proper appreciation of the Bard. Mayhap that comes naturally to actors, or at least it tries to, since he was one of them. I dunno.

I know this. You can show this DVD to Chinese students who'd rather be thinking about computer games or Hello Kitty or puberty, where English is a second (really a third or mayhap fourth) language, hundreds of years and thousands of miles away from Shakespeare's intended audience, and they'll laugh so hard tears come out of their eyes. If you're me, you can show it 20 or so times and the tears of laughter still come out of YOUR eyes. Name ONE other author who can do that.

Parallel structure, which I've mentioned before. The young couple is in love at first sight, the older couple may be a bit too proud to hook up without some manipulation but in their defense they actually speak instead of doing the goo-goo-eyed shuffle. Shakespeare really sends up our attitudes in this one, and in fact drifts into tragic territory that pisses off many students. As he would have wanted. I love its cross-genre nature. It's how some of us write e-books. Rules are for fools.

Love at first sight. Seriously. What up with dat? Actually being confident enough to communicate with the one you love. Why's that so freaking shocking? And why is a damn so-called COMEDY making me ask these questions? Because I'm talking about Shakespeare, that's why. And probably screwing up this review in the process.

Early on, verbal humor aplenty. You won't get it all. You don't care. You get the gist, the mood, and by my troth you can watch it again and again.

Each scene builds upon what preceded it. Possibly, much Shakespeare does that. But I've been reviewing scripts ere now. This is my first review of an actual performance, and it's gonna be different because of that.

It's quite easy for me to summarize plot and character, since I've seen it about 20 times, but I don't wanna. Watch the dang thing and you'll be able to do that yourself. Or read it at Gutenberg, if you're feeling so inclined. Or even in the Cliff's Notes I've mentioned elsewhere if you're a geeberhead. Nobody cares.

After all these viewings, what works for me is the language. Stuff I missed the first 19 viewings. Stuff that convinces me that, if we were to manage the impossibility of producing another Shakespeare, we'd pump him full of Ritalin and try to turn him into a burger flipper. And then he'd defy our plans and write any damn way. Ha!

I think the bottom line is that I need some more Shakespearean DVDs. I've also greatly enjoyed THE MERCHANT OF VENICE but probably reviewed it badly, and I have some others that mayhap weren't quite so faithful to the Bard. We'll see, won't we? I'll keep writing these reviews. Yes I will.

5 out of 5 stars Much Ado About the Play.......2006-05-03

I feel it is necessary to dispute some of the prior reviews I have just read. Shakespeare is a magnificient writer and Much Ado About Nothing is no exception. Some people have written that it is difficult to understand his language; however, the Folger Shakespeare Library has notes on the left page to explain vocabulary that modern readers may not understand. These notes also explain phrases that are no longer used such as "civil as an orange" which is a similie (with the orange being a Seville orange) having the meaning of "between sweet and sour".

Much Ado About Nothing is a witty comedy with enjoyable banter between Beatrice and Benedick, an ironical storyline, and humorous characters such as Dogberry whose malapropisms bring a smile to the reader's face.

2 out of 5 stars "Modern Perspective" makes you long for the Middle Ages!.......2005-12-24

The play, of course, is fabulous and funny, but Professor Gail Kern Paster's "Modern Perspective" at the end of the Folger edition really takes all the fun out of this! A feminist viewpoint is often helpful, but she just kills this thing and hurls countless arrows at marriage. No, marriage isn't perfect, but Professor Paster calls it a "private terrifying world" as if every Elizabethan-era husband locked their wife in a tower! Excuse me, Beatrice allowing herself to be treated like that? After reading this edition, I bought a different one!!!

3 out of 5 stars Probably not the best.......2004-03-03

There are better translations out there. I would probably choose something else. This is readable, but it lacks the oomph that this play needs.

1 out of 5 stars K?.......2003-10-30

I cannot say I truly like the main focus this reviewer stuck to. Not to be rude, and I do see your point, but Shakespeare, being a an, is naturally going to have a masculine out look in some of his stories. But I believe the story was genius not through anything else but the character of Dogberry. I know you're probably thinking "He had barely any dialogue and the dialogue he did have was ridiculous" but the fact is that his stupidity and his unique perception of reality not only provided a bases of humor into the story but also the salvation of the story. I do not wnat to give the play away so I will not say how but...this is a wonderful play and not because Shakespeare wrote it...but because of its absurd genius. Thank you. And I only give it a 1 because I haven't read this book yet for the play I am merely just expressing my own opinion of the actual play itself.

3 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings about this play........2003-09-09

"Much Ado About Nothing: With New and Updated Critical Essays and a Revised Bibliography" starts out with a plethora of information regarding information about Shakespeare, Elizabethan theatre, the writing style, controversy if Shakespeare wrote his plays and if he contributed to others, etc. Then, the play begins, and this is where I wonder if I truly enjoyed the play. I began thinking if I liked the play itself, or because it was written by Shakespeare. Which then led to my thinking of whether it would be deemed such praise, if it hadn't been written by him, and I leans towards "no." The wit is somewhat dry, but the plot around Hero and Claudio caught my attention. It showed me how women were regarded as objects and how easily they can be discarded. And, how quickly men would believe any fault about a woman, without hearing her side of the story. Scary, in my opinion. Otherwise, it was interesting, but I don't know if I'd recommend it.

Book Description

The works of William Shakespeare are timelessand they are time-consuming. Too valuable to be passed over by todays younger generation, Shakespeares plays are, nonetheless, all too often avoided by students and teachers alike. Author Cass Foster, who has been involved in all aspects of theatre for over 35 years, has provided a solution. The Sixty-Minute Shakespeare series is an ideal alternative for those who lack the time to tackle the unabridged versions of the worlds most widely read playwright. Foster has condensed the Bards language, but has left the integrity of Shakespeares writings intact so that students can experience the thrill of his stories as well as the beauty of his prose. In addition, the author has provided footnotes explaining some of the more arcane words and phrases so that the reader can better understand and, therefore, enjoy the plays. This new series contains Much Ado About Nothing, Romeo and Juliet, Twelfth Night, Macbeth, A Midsummer Nights Dream, and Hamlet. Foster, is quick to point out that The Sixty-Minute Shakespeare series is intended to be merely a stepping stone in the study of Shakespeare, not a substitute for the original works. He urges readers, Go beyond the Sixty-Minute versions, using the appreciation and self-confidence you gained to go further. The more you read, the more you gain. An ideal companion piece, Shakespeare: To Teach or Not to Teach was co-authored by Foster and Lynn G. Johnson. This manual helps teachers prepare and present the teachings of Shakespeare from as early as second grade all the way through high school. Foster is the director of a theatre program in a small college in central Arizona and currently the fight choreographer for the Grand Canyon Shakespeare Festival. He has directed shows and staged fights at theatres and universities throughout the country.

5 out of 5 stars if you are looking for a good script for a class play, I would definitely pick this .......2007-07-14

Reviewed By: Aaron Garrett, Eclectic Homeschool Online

This is an abridged version of Shakespeare's play, Much Ado About Nothing, designed so that you can read through it fairly quickly and so that it can be performed in a shorter period of time than Shakespeare's original version. This is indicated by the series name, Sixty-Minute Shakespeare.

The play begins with several men coming back from a war, and Count Claudio and Lord Benedick find that they are in love with the daughter (Hero) and niece (Beatrice) of governor Leonato. The play unfolds as evil Don John tries to destroy their love.

Cass Foster has done a wonderful job editing the play to be short enough to read it casually, but long enough to keep all the important details. Foster has also made it easy to use the book as a script to guide a director and cast in producing the play.

Features that assist in this include a complete detail of the cast before the play starts, a spot at the end of each act for the actors/director to take notes, definitions of Old English terms, and ideas on how to perfect the play with tips on scenery and pacing.

If you want an overview of a particular Shakespeare play, but don't have the time to read it, or if you are looking for a good script for a class play, I would definitely pick this and the other abridged versions in this series.

4 out of 5 stars Cut version worked great for our group - .......2007-01-04

I facilitate a mother/daughter book group, fifth and sixth graders and thier moms. We decided to do a play read this year and, after looking at the offerings under children's theater (boring, trite, tired), we decided to tackle Shakespeare. At first I tried cutting the play down myself, but this is much harder than you'd think! I was delighted when I ran across Cass Foster's series. It's not dumbed down, it uses the original language and has excellent vocabulary helps. Of course the girls didn't get everything that was going on in the play when they read it at home, but when we got together for the reading, it went fantastically well and now they've had a positive introduction to Shakespear. We will be buying another set of 60 minute Shakespeare books for next year

3 out of 5 stars Nice publication.......2006-07-26

This was too long for our planned use. Waws looking for somwthing Like "Shakespeare in a Box".

3 out of 5 stars Many typos.......2000-12-07

I got this book so that my family could do a living room performance in one night. Although I am fairly pleased with how it was shortened, I found many typos that needed to be corrected before we could even read it. I had to sit down with the full text to check it all the way through. An obvious example is when Beatrice says to Benedick "You always end with a jade's trick. O know you of old." (It should be "I know you of old.") If you are only buying one copy, this isn't too hard to do and is easier than buying the full text and cutting the lines yourself. If you are buying several copies for a classroom, however, correcting the typos would be a lot of work. If you are buying this book to read the play, buy the full text, this in one of Shakespeare's shorter plays and one of our favorites.

4 out of 5 stars Much Ado About Nothing (classic for All Ages).......2000-06-21

The book is very interesting, much like other from Shekspeare. The story of two cuples gettig maried is very old. But the way the two cuples fall in love is very new and refreshing. This work has the characters of drama as well as those of drama. This book falls in to chategory of must read it!

Book Description

"What, my dear Lady Disdain! Are you yet living?" These famous lines from Shakespeare's comedy Much Ado About Nothing delightfully show the verbal sparring between the reluctant lovers, Beatrice and Benedick who are happily brought together at the end by the schemes of their friends. And, no story is complete without at least one evil character, Don John, who unsuccessfully tries to tear apart the wedding plans of Hero and Claudio, the other lovers in this sparkling tale.

Written in rhyming couplets, Much Ado About Nothing, the eighth book in this successful series, captures all the exciting elements of the original story, and is truly a delightful read for both adult and child.

Lois Burdett has been a teacher at Hamlet Public School in Stratford, Ontario, for over twenty years and her expertise in bringing Shakespeare to life for children as young as seven is reflected in the children's clever insights and wonderful drawings which complement the play.

Her success has resulted in an ever-increasing demand for workshops as far afield as Europe and Australia where she instructs educators on how they too can familiarize young children with Shakespeare.

From the Foreword by Denzel Washington

"[Lois Burdett's] delightfully entertaining text is complemented by her students' thoughtful interpretations and charming artwork which make Much Ado About Nothing come alive in a whole new way."

Or are you good with it but don't know how to show/share that love with your family and students. This series will do it!! It's good for ALL ages, my middle school students found it fun and informative yet... really young (4ish) children could learn from it too. Visually engages readers by placing the original dialogue on the left-hand side of the page, and a modern prose interpretations on the right. As a result, it is easy for readers to cross reference as they move through the play and finally "get" Shakespeare.

5 out of 5 stars Multiple Perspectives - Great Idea. The NIV of Shakespeare!.......2007-09-08

My teen read this for her summer reading program, and she loved the dual style used. She loves to read, and read it twice... once in each version. This "Side by Side" is a great idea, although I imagine some Literature teachers would give me demerits for ordering this version of Much Ado About Nothing for my daughter. Shakespeare is an "acquired taste" and this opens up a window into his works, giving my teen a taste of great literature some students might never grow to appreciate. I highly recommend this for students that are put off by Shakespeare's original language. It's the literature equivalent of reading the New International Version of the Bible instead of the King James Version -- better to read one that is understood and actually read!

3 out of 5 stars Good study tool.......2007-06-13

Shakespeare is often unintelligible to the average person. The idea of getting a script with the original and a modern version side by side was very attractive, and has proved most useful in understanding what I am reading. However, I was disappointed at the lack of poetry and rythym in the modern version given in this book. I definitely would never perform the modern English script as given here. Still, this version is very useful as a study tool, and I recommend it for that purpose.

5 out of 5 stars Helping students get into Shakespeare.......2005-07-21

The side by side edition, has both Shakespeare's script on the left hand side and modern language on the right. It no longer intimidates the reluctant reader, that becomes entangled with the archaic language and unusual vocabulary. Study questions are included at the back of the book for each scene.

Book Description

Much Ado About Nothing boasts one of Shakespeare's most delightful heroines, most dancing wordplay, and the endearing spectacle of intellectual and social self-importance bested by the desire to love and be loved in return. It offers both the dancing wit of the "merry war" between the sexes, and a sobering vision of the costs of that combat for both men and women. Shakespeare dramatizes a social world in all of its vibrant particulars, in which characters are shaped by the relations between social convention and individual choice. This edition of the play offers in its introduction and commentary an extensive discussion of the materials that informed Shakespeare's compositional choices, both those conventional sources and other contexts, from cuckold jokes to conduct books, which inform the ideas and identities of this play. Particular attention is devoted to Renaissance understandings of gender identity and social rank, as well as to the social valences of Shakespeare's stylistic choices. A treatment of staging possibilities offers illustrations drawn from the earliest and recent theatrical practices, and a critical history examines the fate of the play in the changing trends of academic scholarship. "The text is superb... the critical introduction is predictably smart and engaging, exactly the sort of essay one would recommend to students." Eric Rasmussen, Shakespeare Survey

5 out of 5 stars Much Ado by McEachern.......2007-08-08

Claire McEachern's 2006 Arden edition of "Much Ado" is the definitive work. Her scholarship regarding the sources of Shakespeare's comedy outshines every other edition I have read because of its depth and comprehension. Her descriptions of the Euphuistic language in the play and her comprehensive analysis of the work of previous scholars, makes this the definitive edition for both students and scholars who are interested in reviewing more than the footnotes, which are excellent. Her writing style is clear, yet elegant, and her understanding of the importance of this popular comedy is supreme.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the Bard.......2007-07-17

Much Ado is Shakespeare's wittiest and most timeless comedy, with beautiful language and laugh-out-loud humor. You should be watching it, not reading it, but for the Shakespeare scholar, you can't get a better edition than the Arden. Putting together a definitive Shakespeare text is never as easy as transposing the Folio to modern type. It requires massive amounts of research and a lot of judgment calls. The Arden editors tell you where they found the words chosen, give you alternate wordings, and where necessary explain why they picked the words they did. They also give the modern reader definitions and explanations of many antiquated references and those strange, wonderful words that Shakespeare made up just for the occasion. The only drawback to the Arden edition is that often the notes use up more of the page than the text itself, but once you get used to reading them, you'll find that there's no better reference material available. And of course, no better plays!

5 out of 5 stars A great way to get the most out of your Shakespeare.......2007-05-24

As someone who reads Shakespeare only with a lot of prodding, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed reading this version. A vast improvement on the books used when I was in high school, with the text on the right and the "translation" on the left, Sourcebooks expands on the information in a very readable form, chock full of pictures to add to the enjoyment. And a CD bonus! I'm looking forward to reading more!

    5 out of 5 stars Splendid!.......2007-05-08

Perfect for tyros and longtime fans alike. A thoughtful and imaginative approach to Shakespeare's works. I'd love to line my shelves with the entire series.
